I think cinematic is a good choice. To me it sounds like tv theme music for a show or perhaps music to into/outro a scene. It sounds a bit dated, like SN said maybe the '70's. I can almost picture Bob Newhart jumping into bed with Susan Pleshette... and Mary Tyler Moore, lol.

It's certainly easy on the ears, relaxing and the mix sounds even. Nowadays, we have these daws with thousands of sounds and effects, might as well use them and see what they do. Nothing abrasive or poorly done, they seem to add a certain feel and atmosphere to the song.

Nice job Bob!

Many hanks for the review Wayne. I think I have too many miles on the clock to sound contemporary. Still I've managed to get to the 70s with this one. Maybe I can get to the 80s next time. :)

This is a very cool pop song Scott. The vocals are great, who is singing? The horns and strings at 3:30 is a nice dynamic change. Drums sound nice. You always seem to have even mixes, everything in it's place.

Tip of my hat to all involved!

Thanks allot, Wayne. Glad you like it. The vocals were some samples I found on the net somewhere awhile back. Glad you like the orchestration. I have a great passion for orchestral music, having played in a few in my younger days. I love it when bands opt to have an orchestra back them.

Cheers,

There's a lot to like about this track. I do like the guitars in this track. Are you using a sustain pedal? I dig the long sustained distorted notes. The guitar fills after the 2:00 were cool, maybe could be a bit louder.

The bass is simple but does the trick. It's catchy, a bit of a reggae feel to it. I usually don't like long intros but the build up was worth it. Minimal by design but has all the elements needed to be a great song.

Well done! Thanks for sharing, going to dl this one.

This song has great advantages such as emotions, simplicity and good sounds

The guitar hung by the effect pedal "memory toy of ehx" this sounds like a sustain pedal I would put them louder yes no problem
I would develop much more

thank you for the advice and feedback

The mood you set right away is perfect with the strings. The build up is great and the song really develops nicely as it goes. What is that effect on her vocals in the middle, sounds like it is used on a guitar track also. Is it a fast tremolo or something along those lines?

Mix is great and the ending is very cool as well. Simple guitar parts like the picking at around 4:05 I just love. Reminds me of the guitar lick in "Get Off of My Cloud" by the Stones that continually plays through the song.

Rock, pop...whatever, it's good, plain and simple!

This is virtually awesome, it's amazing what you can do online! I'd pay to go see you guys. The arrangement is great, the playing ability is professional, all the individual tracks were recorded well and the mix is fantastic. Plus, I can hear that cowbell ringing proudly!

Thanks so much, Wayne. Your comments are humbling and much appreciated and thanks for downloading it.

I will admit, I am still amazed at what we all can do online and being thousands of mile from each other. 20 years ago this was science fiction.

Yeah, I do love Scott's cowbell performances! Frank Zappa said the cowbell is the symbol of unbridled passion.

If you are going to know a heavier rock band, Sabbath was a good choice. I had never seen Orange amps till I saw them in a film clip using them.

The beginning was a bit deceiving, wasn't expecting all that happens after that! What do you have for effects on the rhythm guitar around 1:28. It is interesting for sure. The choir pad was different. :) Drums are clean and punchy and the guitars sound great. Tons of energy just like Sabbath had.

Very cool Scott and James!

Hey, thanks allot Wayne. Yeah, I got into Sabbath due to the drum solo on one of their tracks. I never got much further into metal than this.

To be honest, I can't answer your question on the effects on the guitar. I'm not a guitarist, so don't know.

What a pleasant song! Short sweet and to the point. It really conveys your intention. Nice choice of instruments as well.

It's actually at a good volume I think, allows me to turn up my volume knob a bit. A rare thing these days with the misuse of limiters and compressors.

Enjoyed!

Thanks a tons for your kind words Wayne! Glad to know you enjoyed:)

And it really feels great when your emotions are successfully conveyed to your listeners. And about the volume, somewhere i feel the beginning is really not audible, hence, it needs some boost there. Will level it nicely once i take up this track.

I saw drum and bass but heard quite a bit more. I was impressed with vocals and how you mixed them. It has a jazzy feel and drums aren't overpowering but move along at a nice clip. Piano lines are tasty, bass holds it's own and moves around a lot. Overall the mix sounds pretty darn good!

Well done!

How ya digging the new axe? Sounds like you are putting it to good use. After hearing the intro I thought it was going to be a reggae track, sorta hints at that for a few secs.

Some cool harmonics in the middle part. I mean this constructively but I felt the middle part was a bit lengthy without anything happening really. The part that comes in at the end rocks like hell but the middle part didn't build any tension or opposing force that lead me to anticipate the ending. The snare lacked some punch over the course of that time and was hoping the drums would have built up a bit more or changed in some way. Maybe, to me, that part could have been shorter. Just my opinion, don't take it personally. I like the idea of the breakdown in general though.

The last part was very energetic and some very cool bass playing and I liked the ending. Almost like a Bo Diddly style chugging bass.

Take care Evan!

Greetings!

Always feel welcome to give your opinion. I'll never take it personally. I want your honesty, and I'll give you mine. Kissing each others asses will never help our music.

"I felt the middle part was a bit lengthy without anything happening really.....the middle part didn't build any tension or opposing force that lead me to anticipate the ending"

I mostly agree, though I really liked how things went together with the layers. I'll need to add something else there and change the drums, like you said, and probably shorten in by eight measures.

The ending is where my hang-up has been with this track. Several times I've thought to just cut it off and end it with the slow middle part. But the way the bass comes in and the way it sounded reversed with it made me want to keep it in. I probably need to rerecord the guitars there because the tone is a bit odd to my ears. A bit "wongkey".

Thanks for the listen and the feedback. it is appreciated.

on Emperor Tritone by StaticNomad
Hey man, this one's a little different and less psychedelic than your usual tracks. I gave this a few listens and I would consider this a blues track more than jazz. The chords and structure and even the instruments remind me of classic old blues songs. You've gone and added you style and jewelry to the track but imho it reeks of the blues in a personal and unique way though. I hear some jazz stylizing in there but it's done in a blues context. I don't get too hung up on genres so you can heave my opinion in the trash if you like. I just like it when people break the rules and do something different and you do and you are.:)

Even though I thought the slower parts were pretty good I thought the parts that were built up really stood out. The first transition around 2:55 was cool, was that where the electric cello gets it's mojo on? The theremin sounding instrument was scary, a different texture to mix it up. The chugging guitars were about right for the track, that def worked.

Good length and a definite ending, which we don't hear all the time from you. I liked it. A good change of direction musically and an overall cooool track. Mix top notch!

Cheers!

StaticNomad
StaticNomad replied 18th Mar 2015 - 11 years ago
Yo.

Yeah, I guess a bit less psychedelic - perhaps just a different type of psych vibe rather than my more usual beautiful, funky psych stuff. Darker and weirder this time though I never like to go too weird. Gotta keep it melodic and groovy.

I was really planning to disagree with you about the blues thing but I've listened more since your comment and thought hard about it and now partly agree. There is some cool blues playing from guitar (comes naturally to me) but I still hear the Rhodes as being much more jazzy. I have no idea how to play jazz or any other style as I'm a self-taught feel player who doesn't read music or really know any music theory. Give me a good swing groove and I can play in a jazzy way, otherwise I won't/can't.

I like the "jewelry" term. I guess my use of effects and stuff is a bit like jewelry. Hopefully effective and not just pretty adornments with no susbstance underneath.

" I just like it when people break the rules"

That's pretty much my aim with every track. I'm only really interested in creating something new that I can't hear anywhere else. Even if it's not brilliant, I can still be proud of its ambition and intent to do something different.

2:55 is where the big, evil synth horn sound comes in. I think that's what inspired the metal in this as that is a big, badass sound and just screamed "metal" to me. Well, that and the emphasis on the tritone (flattened fifth) in many parts of the track. See - I do know a tiny bit of music theory ie a few note names (oh, and major and minor scales, that's it).

No cello at 2:55. See my reply to Evisma about that so that I don't have to type it again. The new instrument is not gong too well, which is a shame (most expensive instrument I've ever bought but it does look nice) but hopefully it'll come alive when I get a bow. Only subtle cello in this track and it sounds more like double bass (as it's plucked).

" theremin sounding instrument" is a string part plus filtering and delays. Pretty evil and just playing the main horn theme. Haunting stuff. Also returns in the penultimate track section though Evisma didn't like it.

" definite ending, which we don't hear all the time from you."

Hey, you know that my tracks have definite endings. I still haven't done a fadeout. They don't have endings at all on Looperman when they're over 11 mins. But I almost always put a link up to the full thing elsewhere.

Yes, I think the mix on this pretty good. A rather beautiful-looking waveform (and you can clearly see where the metal is). I'm not quite sure why it looks like that but there seems to be some real balance in sounds or something. People who know more about the technicalities of audio might be able to explain it to me.

Take care and glad you like the jazetal.

Nice finishing track to an album. I've always thought the order of tracks was important to the flow and listeners experience while listening to an entire album. Very pretty song, nice singing, well played bedrock of sound to support the vocals. Nice touches with some great guitar fills. Mix sounds nice as well.

Hi Wayne,
Good to read your words.
I also believe that the track sequence in a record is very important: I usually listen to music in "albums"
And for me the songs are "chained" together to form the whole picture.
So this was my humble attempt to realize something along these lines.
Take care,
Domenico

Reminded me a bit of The Cure's "Killing an Arab" and some of their other tracks. Really wished there were some vocals like that on this one. It is broken down musically which I like but in my opinion Spiv needs to lay down some awesome lyrics!!

Hey Wayne, thank you for stopping by! I hadn't thought of it, but you are right about the comparison with that Cure song. I guess my feeling was more along the lines of Joy Division/New Order sort of stuff, but early Cure is definitely only a stone's throw away from that style. I agree this needs vocals, and I have a little bit of lyrics written for it. Have a whole list of things to get done, and recording vocals is not on there sadly... so we'll see if it gets done. I'd like to maybe redo the patches on this one, as people have complained about tuning/detuning issues. I did a recalibration of my main VCO, and I should be able to adjust the korg melody as well. This would probably make the vocals easier. The only unfortunate thing is the bass part was done on the modular, and while I can control it with the same MIDI info, I will need to set up the patch again from memory... ha ha... so probably this will change shape. I appreciate the comment my friend!

This has such a cool 70's classic rock sound, almost reminds me of Peter Frampton in some weird way!:) The keys, big reverb vocals and cool funky blues feel to it just brings me back to a very cool time where r n b, rock, blues, soul, funk were all experimenting with each others sound. Very well put together, love the guitar, great wah and some nice clean rhythm played. Well done Domineco, great track!

Firstly I must give you props for putting the instruments together then applying them to your musical creations. That in itself is very cool. Plus you always give us something to challenge our musical tastes and likes by literally pushing the right buttons and taking us on a very cool musical journey.

Although electronic music isn't my favorite, I was compelled to give this a few listens and let it all soak in. I must say I was totally entertained. I don't think I could listen to an entire album of this but it sure makes the day a whole lot more interesting. Thanks for stepping outside the box, as usual!

Hey Wayne, thank you for taking a few listens to this track! I'm happy that you were entertained by this! I've been changing how I do things lately, and I expect more changes forthcoming. It's good to have along for the ride. Been trying to ignore "musical tastes and likes" for the moment, and have been more concerned with expressing and challenging myself. I'm finding it really difficult to enjoy virtual synthesizers anymore, and it shows in a song like this. I realized this even more when I got my MIDI to CV converter a couple days ago and was tuning it up to my modular. Playing a simple sin wave simultaneously on a software synth and the modular with my midi controller, it was just sad the difference. The lack of character in the software was just disappointing. I'm sure you know what I mean there. I understand not being into a whole album like this of course. I don't think that I have a target audience anymore, either someone likes a song or not despite their usual listening preferences, and if someone actually listens to my albums, then all the better... that really is my ultimate goal is to release full albums to be heard in their entirety. I really appreciate your feedback!

on The End of The Night ft 3v3sound by mrwolf14
Very nice song Domenico. I like the opposing vocal styles, one talking and one singing, it works well with the music, a ballad pop/rock song. Every song needs that gut wrenching guitar to pull at the heartstrings a bit. Nice tone and phrasing on the guitar, really helps build the song and create emotion. Great use of strings and piano which to me can set that ballad feel on their own.

Your vocals could cut through a bit more, maybe too much bass on them. Seems like you plan to adjust the bass a bit. That would be my only suggestion, other than that this is a very pretty song, well done!

Thanks Wayne: the problem with my "vocals" is that I don't trust my voice that much...so it is very hard for me to have it "clear in the mix" :-)
I am working on reducing the lows: I usually work with earphones and there the "natural low cut" is hiding the problem.
Thanks again for the input!
