smoooooth mix YB...being a guitar player who plays guitar over every damn kind of musical thing going on I have to admire your restraint on the drum mix...really like the bass sailing through that nice progression...I would be a bad source of advice on the genre..but my personal preference would be for a little more meat on the kick drum...maybe something centred down around 80 Hz would live o.k. with the bass...but its sounding good just as it is...enjoyed the listen...cheers...Ed

on SAPPHIRE by ArchaicDreamz
I have probably listened to more electronica since I joined LM than I did in many years before that...so I am definitely no expert & just listen from the perspective of what is good listening...and I like this one AD...nice bouncy uplifting vibe that carries you along with it...well done to you on the production too..It has the power with all the dynamics intact...I`d like to hear more electronic mixes produced this way...well done...Ed

Thanks for the review... Like I can compose the song in a week but the production takes a month or so to dial it in It's nice to hear positive feedback on the production part thanks again.AD

on The Waltz of Regret by toastedavalanche
what a refreshing change to hear a mix in 3/4 that sounds so right now...you really nailed the vibe here TA...the expressive vocal delivery really goes with the overall instrumentation (you play well). Guess I have been slacking on my LM participation for a while as I just caught up with this one now...well worth the listen & much enjoyed...bravo...Ed

on Xyilent - Nonsense by XyIlent
Like the intro X....Kudos to Billy..really dig the vocal. It is a minimal mix...I usually like that approach as it lets each instrument and part sit clearly in place....yet it is really quite hard-hitting. The brick wall limiting which I avoid seems to fit well in getting the big driving sound on the drums...I thought maybe a more prominent bass line (that moves around a bit)would kick it up a notch...enjoyed it...big well done to you & billy....Ed

"Kudos to Billy"

BIG kudos, this track was DOA until i sent it to him. He sent this awesome vocal and i just ran with it haha

"It is a minimal mix"

Yup, i spent more time adding detail to a few synths and some weird sound design than going for loads of varied synths and sounds. Dont know if that was the right choice but seems to compliment the vocals well when it hits... i think.. haha

"The brick wall limiting"

To be honest i think thats more down to me not being particularly good at mastering, limiting, compression and stuff i can never get a good sounding mix without a somewhat brick wall going on.

"more prominent bass line"

Again.. more down to me not being very good at bass lol i tend to shy away from any big bassy sounds because they end up just sounding really bad

cheers ed, always a pleasure buddy :)

on What It Was Like by austinmusic
Have to agree with you austinmusic...there is just something special..perhaps to my mind also more honest about just a good song well delivered (you really nailed the feeling) and accompanied with the acoustic guitar..the little additions really embellish it just perfectly...superb fat sound you have going down on record with that acoustic....This is one hell of a fine song and a superb performance by you...definite fav for me...and a big well done to you....keep on...Ed

on The Land Of Ill Gotten Gains by Evisma
Great intro...and then into a kind of lilting quality...I like the way the crystal melody lines fly above that big rich paddy background...very tasty guitar bits really work a treat Evan...There is something of a Celtic vibe to my ears...from the melody lines I think...that picked up change around 3:30 is great..it changes the whole vibe of the track yet maintains the theme...The mix is perfect...This is just a really well done piece of music...and I enjoyed it....big fav....Ed

Greetings, Mr. Ed.

Glad you liked the track. bought a small lamp for the music room to use instead of the bright overhead fixture. The lamp gives the room a softer, more intimate feel, and brought out the guitar lines. Strange, I know, but it was a big change to my feelings while writing. Not sure if that makes sense, but yeah. Softly lit studio brought on a softer song. What would a strobe, blacklight and discoball do?!

I hope all is well with you.

on Marys Black Lamb by Tinka0
Hey Met...I`m diggin this one...Mary actually did have a little lamb..If I can`t come up with a melody in my head when I`m playing I just recite one of those little old nursery rhymes to myself while I play so I don`t hit more notes than necessary..man...this is creative stuff (not the usual canned stuff we hear a lot of on radios)...I really respect artists who create their own sounds rather than try to emulate ones we heard already...great job....Ed

That's not a bad idea! I usually just go with the flow and my imagination does the rest.

Thanks man! I want to cut this down, deepen & lengthen particular sections...

My trick is having no idea what I'm doing!

Field recording is a sure fire way to add a little uniqueness.

Last year I worked on the rails for my City's Metrolink system and when the trams were stabled they would produce this noise that sounded like the coming of the four horsemen! The problem was it sounded off at random times so I could never catch it!

Hey S.J...this is better by far that the stuff my car radio has been playing....and the mix sounds fine to me (although that is coming from an old guy with fading ears haha)...enjoyed the listen...and I agree with Orlando..we could use more of your music...but please get yourself a real comfortable chair.....cheers....Ed

Thanks for the listen, I believe your ears are just fine, probably hearing more than mine. But this one really has some timing issues and a lot of other flaws to be fixed some rainy day.

I wish you a happy and delightful summer!

on Reuse Refix by Tinka0
You would likely know I`m not a good source of knowledgeable commentary on the genre Met...Guess the kind of limiting you hit this one with is part of the genre ...I`m listening with a pair of old Sony (MDR-V600) cans that don`t reproduce the low end well but they are great on the highs...and this one has a lot of higher & high-mid frequency content...I would be inclined to do a bit of selective cutting in that area (maybe around 1.2 khz and above 5) & lay some big fat bass in there pushing some 80 hz & lower stuff...you got lot of power going on so you`re well on your way....keep on....Ed

on The Mythical Gates by StaticNomad
The first 1:40 or so is really influenced strongly by that darker pad sound I think..the guitar at 1:50 moves it into a bit brighter place ...really like the bass lines...I am a fan of the minimal in spite of the clutter I sometimes get into my own mixes...I like the guitar work a lot Static...nice bell-like tone and the you have played the spaces (rather than just the notes) well...4:31...now we`re cooking the kind of blues I dig...really a bit closer to free form around those chords, rather than anything rigidly structured...the outro section kind of floats you to the end with that combination of darkness and then light I was getting at the intro...I like the length, but I do agree with silverman...in spite of my oft short attention span I would still be listening if it was still playing...so its gotta be damn good....Ed

Hello Mr Tweed.

"first 1:40 or so is really influenced strongly by that darker pad sound I think"

Yes and no. The darker sound is the synth bass. There is a pad there (right from after the drum fill intro) but it's quite a light sound.

"guitar at 1:50 moves it into a bit brighter place"

I agree - a more beautiful place before it gets darker as the guitar goes Eastern (around 3:53). Arabic, maybe.

"you have played the spaces (rather than just the notes)"

Yes - I could play blues guitar all day over this sort of groove but I was trying to come up with something distinctive and different that wasn't exactly soloing, more something between hitting different arpeggiated chords and other fills and stuff. Better guitarists than me would no doubt come up with something better but, after lots of editing of the guitar parts, I'm fairly happy with what I've got.

"4:31...now we`re cooking the kind of blues I dig"

Yes - that's fun, bright, stomping stuff. But I played none of the guitar there over that groove. It's leftover playing from before, over the laidback shuffle groove. It just sounds quite different because of the change in drum groove. The bassline is pretty much the same so it just goes to show what a massive difference a (double time) drum groove can make.

I could have gone mad with that stomping blues section, adding loads of slide playing and funky, pumping bass guitar parts. Yet I resisted.

"the outro section kind of floats you to the end"

Yes, gently floating stuff and a chord change from the bass on 6:55. Out of the previous darkness and into the triumphant light. Uplifting guitar follows the filtered strings.

Oh sure - it could be way, way longer as I'd planned to bring the stomping blues section back and add all the slide playing and stuff. Maybe sometimes I should ignore my aim of making tracks under 10 mins and just go over if it feels right.

Thanks again.

Where have you been hiding that fab voice of yours mildperil...probably I just hadn`t caught up with enough of your tracks in the past...man, you have just the right amount of subtle gravel in the vox...and I particularly like the expressiveness you get in the delivery...it really sets you apart from the more usual canned stuff our radios play...Super job...enjoyed listening...big well done to you....Ed

Really pleased you enjoyed listening, as I love your music. I've never been a big fan of the usual canned radio stuff, so that is an extra compliment for me.

But I can't give enough credit to Denyjanuary who wrote the music in the first place, as without him, there would be no song.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving such a kind comment, much appreciated :)

You amaze me Spiv...I definitely get the chiptune 8 bit association in the sounds...but for some reason the way you put this together lifts it into any post synth decade you want...I think even kids who have never heard the original machines would bend an ear to this one..its got a cool uplifting kind of vibe that leaves you with a smile...and I`m sure thats a good thing...right on......Ed

Thank you Ed for listening at communicating here! Don't let the uplifting musical efforts fool you, this song has a very specific political agenda. Sometimes it is worth putting on a costume in order to slip in undetected. I do really appreciate your comments on the arrangement side of things! It was a pretty enjoyable one to work on. Nice clear production traz..everythig sits nice and cleanly in the mix so you must have spent a lot of time getting everything just right...notice some comments on the one guitar volume...sounds fine to me (I`m using headphones)...when I play with volume variation I often just insert a compressor...set it to comp down to -15dB...fast attack.. 15ms....slow release 1000ms, so it works continually all the way through and helps even the volumes out...Nice uplifting tune you have going...sounds like Summer....well done my friend...Ed

Yeah, some timing takes a while because in this one i use a few loops in different speeds and heavily cut. It gives great satisfaction as you hear them ok with headphones too, were not really reliant on it before...
