The first 1:40 or so is really influenced strongly by that darker pad sound I think..the guitar at 1:50 moves it into a bit brighter place ...really like the bass lines...I am a fan of the minimal in spite of the clutter I sometimes get into my own mixes...I like the guitar work a lot Static...nice bell-like tone and the you have played the spaces (rather than just the notes) well...4:31...now we`re cooking the kind of blues I dig...really a bit closer to free form around those chords, rather than anything rigidly structured...the outro section kind of floats you to the end with that combination of darkness and then light I was getting at the intro...I like the length, but I do agree with silverman...in spite of my oft short attention span I would still be listening if it was still playing...so its gotta be damn good....Ed
"first 1:40 or so is really influenced strongly by that darker pad sound I think"
Yes and no. The darker sound is the synth bass. There is a pad there (right from after the drum fill intro) but it's quite a light sound.
"guitar at 1:50 moves it into a bit brighter place"
I agree - a more beautiful place before it gets darker as the guitar goes Eastern (around 3:53). Arabic, maybe.
"you have played the spaces (rather than just the notes)"
Yes - I could play blues guitar all day over this sort of groove but I was trying to come up with something distinctive and different that wasn't exactly soloing, more something between hitting different arpeggiated chords and other fills and stuff. Better guitarists than me would no doubt come up with something better but, after lots of editing of the guitar parts, I'm fairly happy with what I've got.
"4:31...now we`re cooking the kind of blues I dig"
Yes - that's fun, bright, stomping stuff. But I played none of the guitar there over that groove. It's leftover playing from before, over the laidback shuffle groove. It just sounds quite different because of the change in drum groove. The bassline is pretty much the same so it just goes to show what a massive difference a (double time) drum groove can make.
I could have gone mad with that stomping blues section, adding loads of slide playing and funky, pumping bass guitar parts. Yet I resisted.
"the outro section kind of floats you to the end"
Yes, gently floating stuff and a chord change from the bass on 6:55. Out of the previous darkness and into the triumphant light. Uplifting guitar follows the filtered strings.
Oh sure - it could be way, way longer as I'd planned to bring the stomping blues section back and add all the slide playing and stuff. Maybe sometimes I should ignore my aim of making tracks under 10 mins and just go over if it feels right.
Where have you been hiding that fab voice of yours mildperil...probably I just hadn`t caught up with enough of your tracks in the past...man, you have just the right amount of subtle gravel in the vox...and I particularly like the expressiveness you get in the delivery...it really sets you apart from the more usual canned stuff our radios play...Super job...enjoyed listening...big well done to you....Ed
Really pleased you enjoyed listening, as I love your music. I've never been a big fan of the usual canned radio stuff, so that is an extra compliment for me.
But I can't give enough credit to Denyjanuary who wrote the music in the first place, as without him, there would be no song.
Thanks for stopping by and leaving such a kind comment, much appreciated :)
You amaze me Spiv...I definitely get the chiptune 8 bit association in the sounds...but for some reason the way you put this together lifts it into any post synth decade you want...I think even kids who have never heard the original machines would bend an ear to this one..its got a cool uplifting kind of vibe that leaves you with a smile...and I`m sure thats a good thing...right on......Ed
Thank you Ed for listening at communicating here! Don't let the uplifting musical efforts fool you, this song has a very specific political agenda. Sometimes it is worth putting on a costume in order to slip in undetected. I do really appreciate your comments on the arrangement side of things! It was a pretty enjoyable one to work on. Thanks so much!
glad to hear someone trying to mix guitar and electronic instruments...I have tried it quite a few times...big fun....nice upbeat mix MYXD...good tune for a Summer evening listen...Ed
Nice clear production traz..everythig sits nice and cleanly in the mix so you must have spent a lot of time getting everything just right...notice some comments on the one guitar volume...sounds fine to me (I`m using headphones)...when I play with volume variation I often just insert a compressor...set it to comp down to -15dB...fast attack.. 15ms....slow release 1000ms, so it works continually all the way through and helps even the volumes out...Nice uplifting tune you have going...sounds like Summer....well done my friend...Ed
Thank you Ed!
Yeah, some timing takes a while because in this one i use a few loops in different speeds and heavily cut. It gives great satisfaction as you hear them ok with headphones too, were not really reliant on it before...
Maddie is one really talented vocalist and I gotta say you really did a great job on making the backing mix & vocal work together mudhoen...really nice upbeat summer-sounding mix...well done....Ed
I`m not sure that monk is as peaceful as he is supposed to be...maybe he used some of the wrong kind of mountain weed in making his incense..now, that part starting around 2:20 sees him with a new peaceful vision of his role...before temptation comes his way again at 3:42 for a while....very cool trip silverman...certainly different...and most definitely an enjoyable listen...great job...Ed
Thanks Ed. Always encouraging when you comment.
Not as peaceful you say. Well that's why he's in denim.
A hippy in the mountains looking for enlightenment as opposed to a monk who already possesses it.
Hail ye master of technique...that thing you did with the pumpin piano and sax at the beginning is freekin awesome (interesting to note how you did it in your reply to Neomorpheus)...the creative stuff you have been doing with that cello is bloody musical art Static...This one is just one great groove...and aside from how you may more accurately describe it...its just good listening, particularly like the fat/low piano - sax combo parts...honestly enjoyed this one till the last note (which was not the more usual lazy fade most of us do)...big ovation from an old fart across the water.....Cheers...Ed
Yes, that early pumping piano part I hear as being very hip hop. That main first note was a kick drum part (hence the insistent precision) and then the note it changes to was the snare. I have some interesting ideas that I'll have to explore some time regarding taking drum fills and copying the MIDI data to a synth so that drums and synth are playing exactly the same thing. Could be very interesting, especially when I start to slowly vary things so that they're not quite playing the same thing.
Yes, I have been doing lots of creative stuff with the cello. That's partly because I'm still rubbish at bowing and can't consistently do the kind of things on it that I can do on my other stringed instruments. But I don't just sit there practising it as I try to learn it. I record and then edit my parts very carefully to get rid of all the many errors. I do that a hell of a lot anyway with my other instruments but that's more for creativity whereas this is initially just to get rid of the crap bowing tones that I often hit. Scrapey, whingey sounds.
"enjoyed this one till the last note (which was not the more usual lazy fade most of us do)"
My endings have not been too great in the last year and I've done too many abrupt sort of endings and only a few skilful ones. I think I'm almost getting worse at endings. Must make more effort as they're important. That's how you leave the listener so it has to be a good goodbye, so to speak.
wicked intro hits...nailed my old Sony headphones right to my ears...I use these cans to check high (they do a nice job on that...but shitty on lows)...you`re right...its a wicked heavy industrial mix...best headphones (for accuracy) I have are ATH M50s....cheers....Ed
I was just gliding along...appreciating the bass playing and vocal over that subtle backing pad...then the first of the diversions into that kind of country blues-rock whacked me with a big smile...love the way you just glide out of that section around 3:05...and on into the smooth next one (like the way you walked the bass around there too)...I was thinking you were using your fretless in that first section till I read your later comments..never did try an acoustic one but I did try a set of those black nylon wound jazz strings on my first JBass (around 65)...Your posts are always a treat for the ears and inspiration for the mind Dave...the production is fantastic, but having such a great arrangement...the composing imagination...and playing talent really sets a standard that few will meet....superb work all round...really enjoyed this one...Ed
Hey Ed thanks man. I'm really getting into the acoustic tone of my bass at the moment, it's got heaps of sustain and fills out the bottom register nicely, pretty sure I'm going to build another one, a four stringer this time with an additional magnetic pickup for those crossover tones (and a slimmer neck for speeder playing! lol)...thanks for your kind words mate very much appreciated!....cheers Dave :)
best tune I have listened to today Bob...its got the composition, arrangement The big talent in the band and nice clean production....gotta be all good..a bit of a throwback to times when artists used to have to play their instruemnts and be good at it...most importantly I`m just really enjoying this evening listen....well done to you..fav....Ed
Hi Ed,
good to hear from you. Yes it's a bit 40s. I remember when I was a kid of about 5, my mother would have the radio on, and it had this kind of warm harmonic sound.
Thanks for your great comment.
cool intro...really like the mix of the higher & fatter orchestral bits...and the smoother than usual beats easily make this one a crossover type track Pete...new or old school, its just good listening over my way...can`t honestly claim to be a rap fan, but your vocal is really well done...great job...I think this is the first time I hit the fav button on a hip hop mix....cheers....Ed
You have a way with the words Spiv..and the way you deliver them is right on with the musical vibe...I think I catch little glimpses of some of my early recollections of synth tunes (my wife used to play it really loud in the car)...as always it is really well done..it is unique (and I`m sure I have said that several times before) and that in itself is an unusual achievement today...perhaps you are the only one-of-a-kind on a planet that the species went extinct on...Cheers...Ed
Ed, you are far too kind! It was an important song for me to complete, and as is often the case, songs like that are difficult for me to share with anyone. Sometimes I wonder about being one of a kind, and all I need to do is think of my wife... we share too many feelings and ideas for that to be true. In reading about clovers, white clovers specifically, I learned that the world record for most leaflets on a clover is 86. I think that my upbringing regarding the rarity of a simple four leaf clover was simply overstated. Hopefully this is true, otherwise something odd is going on in our backyard the last few years! Thank you for your listen, and the discussion! Have a great day!
This is one extra cool track mildperil..perhaps the lack of editing gives it a more real feel that we are used to hearing..really like the guitar (nice clear production) but the vocal is the star...delivered with feeling...enjoyed this one mate....keep on....Ed
I like this one silverman..nice smooth vibe..a bit of R&B - Jazz feel...You have the mix in a nice space too...feel like I should be sitting at a back table sipping on something cool....great job...Cheers...Ed
Thank you Tumble. I might take it down and try for a little more depth and a little more stuff in there irt sounds a little long winded in places now but you know what it's like creating these things having to listen to the same bit over and over and over until your happy with it and then it gets tempting to repeat thaty bit a few to many times ... that's me at the moment.
I cant honestly remember enough about the earlier mixes to offer much Spiv...and you know I`m not a good source of informed observation on the genre...Its just good..and when you combine the lyrics with the music its damn fine entertainment with yet another listen...and the mix sounds good to me...Ed
Hello again Ed! Thanks for taking to the new version, as it's definitely better... hence the earlier one doesn't matter much. I'm really looking forward to hearing more remixes of this as they roll in! "Damn find entertainment" is quite the compliment, I appreciate it!
PS: If you are still using Sony Creative products you might be interested to know that they were just acquired by Magix....maybe there is hope Acid Pro will have a better future...it hasnt been updated since 2012...
Yep still use Sony, so that is good news re magix...Things okies here my friend, waiting to get into a Hospital then hoping things will settle down health wise...Peace...Mosaic...
I`m liking this big time right off the bat...If it was on the radio I would be looking for who the artist was so I could get more....great combination of sounds with the fat synth backing...right-on drums & bass..The vocal works great and you mixed it in nicely....a brilliant return mate...hope you and yours are well.....Ed
Thank you mate for stopping by, and more so your kind words on the track, just listen to this again and fairly happy with it, glad you enjoyed the piece...Peace Ed...mosaic...
This is top notch Kyle...a bigger mix this time with the electric gtr...nice job on the recording by the way...We tend to be our own worse critics at times but you really do have the vocal chops Kyle..I don`t know how to explain it but its a voice character thing ...this would fit very nicely in today`s country radio....a big well done to you...fav from this ol boy...Ed
Thanks Ed, I always respect your view on things so I take your compliment on my vocals to heart, I appreciate it. It's tough to for me to like my own voice I guess, but I do like singing so I guess I just need to except it and just make music because its fun. As always I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment. Thanks!!!
man....with a voice like that you can do any kind of song you want Scott...can`t be bought...either got it or you dont...certainly hear Franko`s signature in there too...I dont have 5.1..just listening with phones but it sounds really good..stay behind the windshield if you are riding our prairies later in the year...them grasshoppers are damn hard..haha....well done guys...another winner for sure...Ed
I thought I'd chime in and thank you personally for your kind words. I'm not exactly sure what I've 'got' except a decent speaking voice, but I can't really sing, but thanks anyway.
You don't really need a surround system, but it's nice when you can hear different instruments coming from different parts of the room. I mix on a stereo, though.
You got a good live band sound going in this one TG (I find that hard to do sometimes)..the band sounds tight and the vocal is nicely placed...sounds good just the way you did it....well done to everyone...Ed
Thanks Ed :) Yes it is amazing considering I have never met or played with these guys in the same room...but we got a good system going for our recording process, and we are learning all the time. And to tell you the truth, I am basically flying in the dark with the mixing process, I pull on some levers and push some buttons, ask the guys what they think, do some adjustments and that's it. TG :)
