on Wildwood Ambience by DanGoldstein
I used to kayak all the time and hearing this track reminded me how awesome it was, minus any mosquitoes. I would see all kinds of wildlife. One day me and a deer stared at each other about 70 feet, 20 meters or so apart. I broke our stare a good 15 minutes into it and paddled away, it was a good moment.

Thanks Dan for bring me back there!

I have a recollection of an early morning close encounter with some deer as well. This while camping once with some other summer campers. But wow - 15 minutes is a long stare! Anyway - I'm really happy if you connected with the track. Best regards - Dan

My life suddenly seems great after listening to the march of the doom and gloom brothers. ;) Kinda spooky and dark, your description was good! Sounds like Burt is going to need cigar box anonymous soon.

Thank you Wayne for your time you invest into listening and for your friendly words.
Burt is so creative since he startet to make one cbg after the other :) so don't stop him until we finished our album :)
His cbg's have so a nice kind of sound like he recorded them in a small, abandoned hut, somewhere in the deep swamp. Just a gloomy sound like from another world :)

stay tuned

on Kodaline - All I Want Ft Amenci by BradoSanz
Very pretty little song. She has a nice voice and a sad story. Your music was perfect for her words and emotions.

It's great that you are back at it! You were using PT before, weren't you? I like with Ableton you get free updates for life. You pay a little more up front but always have the most recent version.

Nice work!

Yes, I've been working with Pro Tools since LE 6.9 :) So it was fairly easy to get used to, which I definitely like a lot. And because I got the student edition (full version but just cheaper for students), I only paid 300 for it! So I don't mind it at all!

on Midnight Sun by StaticNomad
Absolutely - "A psychedelic chillout stoner/doom epic." Something weird is going on when you are doing shorter songs and I am doing longer songs. The music gods are smiling down on us both now! :)

It reminded me instantly of Black Sabbath when it started, was expecting Ozzie to start blasting off. The pad that slowly comes in is cool, it adds a bit of softness to the track. The old band Foreigner used to do that a lot.

Glad you split this off of the other track and continued working on this. Even though this probably worked well with the other track it makes a great track on it's own. Good build ups and transitions throughout the track. Interesting convo between you and Cru about that.

I find it weird when I'm working on fast paced songs then I do one at 85 bpm and it sounds to me like it's dragging. This one is slow, what is the bpm? The slower songs bring out lots of emotion in guitar playing so nice riffage all the way through. The series of kick drums at about 1:10 was cool as sh!t!

Way to go Mr. Nomad!

Wayne
StaticNomad
StaticNomad replied 30th Mar 2016 - 9 years ago
Yo. Mr Wayne.

Yes, a surprise to see you doing an 8 min song. No doubt because you just had to tell the whole story. I don't know how long the original Dylan song is.

I have been making a determined effort to do shorter stuff and have had some definite success, such as 3 tracks under 4 mins in the last month or so.

Yes, I certainly do hear the Sabbath in this though only realised it after everyone else pointed out. Something to do with the slower tempo and how I hit one big euphoric chord.

"The pad that slowly comes in is cool"

That's the sort of thing that Sabbath never did, as far as I'm aware. Big chill in this if you remove the guitar. Actually you can hear that in the last minute or so.

"Even though this probably worked well with the other track"

It was OK but a bit of an unnecessary ending. Far too good to be somewhat hidden away at the end of a long one.

"Good build ups and transitions throughout the track."

Yes, it has a very "musically healthy" waveform ie lots of dynamics and peaks and troughs. Not just copied and pasted, incessant stuff (even though I always do a lot of copying and pasting) but more like a live band.

BPM here is 100 throughout though I think the drum track is playing at half tempo so I guess it's 50.

"The slower songs bring out lots of emotion in guitar playing"

Yes, my instrument playing is best suited to slow and medium tempo stuff. I'm not a good fast player though I can sometimes knock out some short bursts of rapid badassery.

"kick drums at about 1:10 was cool as sh!t"

Glad you noticed as there's so method behind that. Previously, the drum groove has been open and sparse to allow big chords and some pads to flow. They are punctuated by particular drum fills for excitement. But, before it goes massive and heavy on 1:17 I know that I want to build up to that so that double kick work did the job very well. Putting them in before interfered with the groove but it makes sense when I then go into something heavier.

This is the skill of carefully arranging your drum movement and having a purpose behind each fill and cymbal hit and so on. You've go to remove drum work that interferes with top layers whilst also working out how you can use the drums to build up excitement in all the right places.

Thanks very much for the thoughts.

on I Fall Down v2 by Spivkurl
Hope you are well Pat, sounds like things are going on. Take care of yourself.

I agree with Cru but you already have that issue in mind to take care of it. It is a very cool track man.

I fall down too, ha! Too many concussions gave me balance issues and I don't feel my feet due to a nerve condition. It makes life interesting, that's for sure.

Ha ha... I've had several strangers, friends and family all tell me I need help recently. I've been there, and done that... been there don't want to go back. I just need to protect myself from the brain degeneration which seems to be afflicting everyone. If I remember my lessons learned, then I'll be as safe as anyone.

Hope that like the new version of this track. None of the performances were changed, only a slight stripping down and some remixing/mastering. Some people seem to think the vocals have a dull sheen... I think this is probably due to two things: I was in a lower register than I have been recently, and it was intentional... and this is the first time I've used a new microphone I got, it's an old EC-5 superscope. I actually really like the sound of it! Sounds like you have a similar condition to me. I have had more head injuries than I can remember, all the way back to three years old. I'm sorry you don't feel your feet, that sucks. I have more trouble with visual memory on a normal day, but those seizures are not fun. Thank you for taking a listen! Have a great day!

on on that note by promenade2239
Hey Alex, been a while seeing you, hope you are well. I don't know much about house music so I can't say much about that. It reminded me of a clock and the passage of time so I guess it is a bit cinematic to me. It has a dark overtone to it, the sound effects sound chaotic and menacing. I've never heard of that synth before but it seems quite useful as it produces a lot of different sounds. Sounds like you are having some fun experimenting with your music, keep up the interesting work!

hello Wayne, good to see you again, Im happy you had a chance to hear this particular one! Yes, it is a result of learning new things and exploring possibilities of my new equipment as I am slightly gravitating towards another musical directions and techniques I guess. It is not to say that I will be making proper House genres from now as I am more interested in ambient or gentle electronic.
I will be using hardware a lot but I won't be producing music at the same speed as before - I had to slow down my looperman activity last months due to real life commitments. It is because there is a lot to learn about synths as well and it seems like there is so much to explore regarding to sound-design territories and synthesis ahead. Here I am using modyfied presets of Blofeld basically. There is a sequence of chords repeated 4 times throughout and I am really keeping everything organized here by building everything around this sequence. I do not now how much this is noticable - probably not so much at first listening, especially when just playing this along other looperman tracks. It is simply quite different and somehow more difficult track to percieve from others, I guess. As you say: more dark and probably less 'entertaining'. I would say it is a meditative music as it was created in few moments of increased attention and clarity of the mind, which is not always easy to achieve.
Thank you for listening to my music and your support!
Best, Alex

Kinda weird, I was thinking "clever" as I was listening. When I opened the track page and saw silverman's review I couldn't help but laugh.

The music is vague, soft and a bit abstract and with drum and some percussion, I liked the bongos and triangle especially. The main vocals, while different seem to all work well together. The vocals that were heavy with effects and more used as an effect popping in the mix helped the overall ethereal feel of the track and added interest as I listened and enjoyed. Dig the whistling, I have to try doing that sometime.

Well done!

Hi there Wayne!

First of all, thanks for listening and your reply. Secondly, I really need to start finding out the meaning of "clever" in a musical context :-). I am from Amsterdam, so English is not my native language.

The whistling is not something I did myself. I used it as an acapella which was dropped here at looperman. The poster was quite clear in not mentioning name, and didn't want any feedback either. So, of course I respect that and that's why I didn't mention it.

I have now second thoughts about the use of Shamoozey's line in a second voice. I received quite some advice to take it out...

Anyway, thanks again. Much appreciated.

Pretty good track! I wish more people who do hip hop would incorporate more live instruments into their tracks. I'm not much into hh so I can't talk much about the particulars of that but I thought the track had a much more personal touch to it than the typical FL studio hh you get here. Any more tracks?

Thank you, appreciate it. I am actually working on more tracks, I got a drummer and a bass player who are into this so we will do more. It is exactly as you said, I love hiphop and blues, rock, but I prefer it to be played with real instruments, and add a bit of electronic stuff. I would love to have someone make effects for us using a turntable though, that would be cool :)

Like others have mentioned how good the piano is, I tend to agree. I thought your poem and the effects on the vox worked well with the piano effects. It's a solid and focused idea from a songwriter and producer's point of view. Hope this one inspires you for the next one.

I couldn't help but laugh at Ed's suggestion to have you guys and gals as his neighbor. He lives where it's cold though, it's sunny and warm here at the beach...just so you know.

It's really hard to put this in any particular genre, rock is generic but there are a few styles of music mixed together. I like the singing, a great strong vocal track. The guitar was interesting around 1:00, the clean rhythm and another guitar are playing some funky licks through that part. Around 1:45 the clean git does it again. Good to hear a gong now and then. :)

Doesn't matter the line-up, you folks always bring something worthy of praise. Excellent job by everyone!

I don't know much about deep house other than I would probably hear it in a dance club. Overall the mix sounds great, especially some of the effects on the vocals and other cool sounds and effects that added a lot of stereo depth. I gave this a few listens, with and without headphones and both ways I found it well put together and mixed and I enjoyed listening to this. Sounds professional to me as well!

What a nice tribute to Ed! You guys are quite talented in your own ways and when working together you seem to be seamless and on the same page. Very cinematic piece, expected to hear the Highlander or a Braveheart movie snippet on top somewhere. :) Ambient is a cool choice, like a kaleidoscope for the ears.

on Mile-Deep Island by Evisma
Instruments are hard to part with, even trading up is difficult. Instruments become like family, they are part of your life.

A full size acoustic will suit you well but pick one that feels and sounds right to you. I bought mine in a pawn shop in Mississippi and never knew what kind it was until just recently, almost 30 years. It just felt right when I played it.

It's a mid 80's Takamine F-349 with a Shadow bridge pickup installed on it that was only labeled with a "shadow bridge installed" on the headstock. Takamine was no where on it but I recently stumbled on a picture of one online and with some research I found out about it.

Takamine makes some nice guitars at a reasonable price and I've seen people like Jon Bon Jovi and his sidekick playing them. If you can go up in price I would recommend a Martin or Taylor, there are many models at a range of prices.($1000 and up) Then if you can go higher look into the Gibson Hummingbird and their other acoustics at about $3500 and up.(i wish)

Used is ALWAYS an option!! Have fun guitar shopping!

The track is cool, I liked the piano in the first half. There is a calm before the storm so to speak. It reminded me of like a Celtic/Rock power ballad when it all kicked it.

How is it an island if it's a mile deep? That's deep man...

My friend, Jeff, has a Martin. Sounds fantastic. Evan will not be getting one. Evan's price range is around 500. Considering the one I'm losing runs about 130, I'm sure I'll like whatever I get. Looks don't matter. In the end, if it sounds good, the mic doesn't care what color it is. Let's hope I don't find a sweet sounding pink one!

Thanks for your time and consideration. I hope things are better compared to the last time we spoke.

Take care

on Tang Butterfly World by DanGoldstein
Interesting interpretation of a butterfly Dan. I've never looked a butterfly and thought of it as ever being aggressive or industrious but I suppose at some time it has to go about his butterfly world taking the good as well as the bad.

The drum part at the beginning I thought of as it's tiny heart beating and starting it's day. Then comes the stress and tension of the daily life of a butterfly, fighting winds, looking for a bite to eat and avoiding bug zappers.

Thanks, that was different!

on The 9th Planet by Planetjazzbass
Hey Dave! As Pluto was demoted from the planet status a few years ago I found it interesting how you were going to represent a new ninth planet. The intro was pretty cool, some spacey distortion set a mood right away. I thought I might hear more synths than real instruments but the guitars were a cool thought and well played. The synths didn't overpower the mix and added some neat textural elements. This is the kind of music I like to listen to when painting or doing odd jobs around the homestead.

Take care!

on Mojave Sunrise by Orlando51
Hey, sorry I missed this one when you posted it, must have been during one of my blackouts! hehe Sounds like a piece from a Stanley Kubrick film, especially the first half.

I've never been to the desert and have always wanted to go. I get an ocean sunrise every day so I imagined that instead. The second half had sort of an Asian feel with the plucked instruments. I did get the feeling of discovery, a new day dawning even though there seemed to be some darker moments or tension in there as well.

Cool piece Orlando, it's open to many interpretation and it seems to be a hit as well!

Thanks so much Wayne. Your comment really humbles me, sir.

The vocals were in a collection I found a while back. They were broken up in short line, so I just put them together to form the lyrics. I, than, worked the instruments around them.

For my drum tracks I use an Alesis electronic drum kit: http://www.alesis.com/products/legacy/dm10-studio-kit and record my tracks on a Tascam digital recorder. I can get whatever drum sound needed. My acoustic kit these days is for display only!

Very cool intro which led me into a funky laid back groove. I would say it also is a bit r n b and soul, I could hear Daryl Hall singing on this.

The guitar sounds nice, I've never heard of it so I will have to check it out online. Sounds like a PRS a little. Solid track sets a certain mood with the solid groove and almost hypnotic guitar with some neat effects.

Sounds great!
