Creative use of your vocals. Blowing into the mic and heavily reverb is a great idea. Overall a very solid idea.
I think vocals would add a lot to this and give it an added dimension. Are you planning to add vocals? Hopefully you are. If you would like some help I wouldn't mind taking a crack at something like this. I can hear some Scott Weiland styled vocals in there. I've never tried that style but willing to. If interested give me a shout through the site.
Hey Wayne! Good to hear from you again dude! Thanks for checking it out. Normally I would say yes but I think I want this song to remain as it is. But I'm not opposed to a collaboration with you for this album I'm working on. I'll try to write something and post it here and if you dig it let me know.
I can't say I am an expert in jazz, to me the best part of jazz is the experimenting. Not sure if you are doing any of that here, combining sounds, feelings and textures with drums and vocal effects or if you are the new Frank Zappa. ;) Either way, keep on keeping on, making music to provoke thought is great.
The second piece is a nice ethereal, dreamy piece. The vocals echoing is a nice effect. Well done Alex!
Glad you are giving that cello a run for it's money. Some of the higher stuff you played around 6:30 was very cool, learning riffs and runs like that are a fun way to get started and feel like you are progressing.
Neat track and a good jam track. I think some of that dobro would fit in the end part.
I didn't care for the synth in the end so much. Things were sounding pretty organic then that popped up. Felt a more natural sound could have been used. Just a person thing.
Keep working that cello in. You just may be the next Jeff Lynne.
I sure am giving the cello a good workout. I've hardly played any other instrument for the last 2 months. I'm trying to get half decent (nowhere near that yet) so I can really properly incorporate it in my music.
Until then, I'm having to do so much editing of the parts I record as there are so many errors and #####, unintentional tones.
" Some of the higher stuff you played around 6:30 was very cool"
I agree. It's really laidback, kind of classy playing but there are also some nice little rapid bowed runs. I find playing the top two strings (as I'm doing here) really quite difficult as they seem to be quite far away from me so I have to adjust my position just to see what I'm doing.
"some of that dobro would fit in the end part."
Quite possibly but I was adamant that I wanted to try making it work only with cello as the lead instrument. I've hardly played any slide in many months.
"I didn't care for the synth in the end so much. Things were sounding pretty organic then that popped up"
No problem if you don't like it but what you say is a bit of a surprise because that same synth sound has already occurred quite prominently twice in the track. So, check it out at 0:48 and then 3:12. By bringing it back at 7:30, I'm only returning to previously established themes so hopefully it shouldn't feel too out of place. Despite being cello-heavy, I don't see this as a natural, acoustic, organic kind of track. It's still really quite processed and progressive. So, I think the trancey arp synth fits that vibe.
"You just may be the next Jeff Lynne."
Ha, I'm a massive fan of his but I don't believe he plays cello. You're thinking of one or two of his bandmates in ELO, one of my favourite groups of all time. They are a much maligned and seriously underrated group.
It is a nice track. I am not much of a HH fan but the track is solid. Work on the compression on the master track to give it some more punch, a little limiter, not much. Those will give it punch and added volume.
Great band to model a song after. The only album I have of them is their one with No One Knows on it and that is great from beginning to end.
This one comes out of the gate guns a blazin'! I love music like this, in your face rock and roll. This is great live bar room music. Mix sounds great!
Thanks Wayne. I have everything they and Josh Homme has ever released including the stuff with Kyuss and his latest with Iggy Pop. Awesome album by the way. It is like David Bowie sang on a Queens of the Stone Age album.
We don't have a "spring" to speak of here in sunny Florida but I used this to transport me back to a chilly and windy New England day. A very nice piece of music, kudos to both of you!
I do appreciate any percussion you used, works well here as do the strings, they tear at the heart. The piano is straight forward at first then at the end plays some fills that makes me shout MORE! Ed's acoustic sounds nice and it goes so well with this overall positive feel of renewal.
Combined or by yourselves, you guys are some talented folks!
Sorry to hear you were sick. That dreadful disease is becoming all to common. Couldn't be happier to hear you are cancer free and ready to go make music again!!
I listened to the instrumental and the mix is much better. The singing is excellent and added the cherry on top! The angel/devil in disguise idea has been done a million times and a million more times to come in the future. Of course nothing beats Elvis' Devil In Disguise but this might come in a close second. ;)
Hey Kyle, this has a big sound to it, almost like a U2 song(Rattle and Hum period) with the keys/pad rolling in the background as the drums pound away and the singer wails! All the elements are there.
I know what you mean about uploading because you are tired of mixing it, lol!! We must listen to bits and pieces of songs hundreds of times, at least. I usually try to have 3 or 4 songs going at once so I don't get too bored with one project.
Hey Wayne thanks for stopping by and listening, its always appreciated. I have been trying to find more time to write and record, still not as much as I would like but at least I can do it a little. I am able to work on about 1 track a month which is good compared to the 3-4 months it was taking. I put in a studio at the school that I teach at so now when I have free time I try to get in there and utilize it. Anyway, thanks again.
Hey Fila, it's been a while but worth the wait. Having my coffee and waking up this fine morning and this track is putting me in the perfect mood.
Good drums, they sit back and do their job and let the feature instruments shine. You are right, the piano is what all the other instruments revolve around. The synths add a nice peaceful feeling.
My coffee is kicking in but hey, this music is chilling it to iced coffee!! ;) Take care, don't be such a stranger, post more!!
theHumps whats up man? Yes it has been a while good to see some of the originals still around. Had a battle with Cancer but cancer free now so time to get back to looping. Been playing around with this for about 9 months as I try and get the groove back. Thanks for stopping by and leaving those great comments. Appreciated! Did't mean to chill your coffee but damn just happened to my cup!! Thanks again for stopping by. Got two potentials in the can. Stay tuned! Take Care Filãofsoul
The song is so upbeat, happy sounding and energetic and knowing something is wrong with Franco's health is making the dancing almost unbearable. ;) Hope you are well Franco!
Thanks so much, Wayne, and I'm sure Franco appreciates your best wishes. He's still recovering and even back to work (although not too happy about it!) Our projects may be slowing down, but we'll keep going as long as we can. Franco, Scott, Dan and I have a project about to begin in a couple days.
I hope you own a mandolin, I heard some fast pickin' going on in there. I like the bass and drums on this track. Bass is so underrated as to how much fun it is to play and to how it can have an impact on the song. There are periods where the bass is simple and places where the bass is moving out. Mostly when the drummer and bass are in a groove, you can tell. Your bass playing is really good here!
Hey Wayne my man!
Thanks for your interests in the track my friend.Yes the bass is a very abused instrument in the big world :) ,most great bands have great bass players and the bass line is so important to harmony.Example;if the guitarist is playing a C chord and the bass plays an A root note,we are now in Aminor. :)
This is a neat little acoustic idea. I tried playing along on my acoustic and found that you were tuned to 430 so everything was a half step down. No biggie. Are you planning to add bass? It would be nice to hear some in this track.
I thought the entire mix could have been a little louder and noticed that by looking at how small the waveform was and by listening. There should be a master volume with a meter(i would guess) in audacity that shows the output level. Boost that up a bit, not until the meter goes in the red but you can get this louder.
I write a lot of ideas like this one so when I started listening I knew I would like this!
Hi. Thanks for your comments , yes i like to play tuned down half a step..I haven't planned on adding some bass but if you want to go ahead and send back to me that would be cool. Thanks for your tip with Audacity i'm making better mixes each time i use it..
Feels like I'm hanging out at band practice, this has a nice live feel. I do like your style! The guitar lead was pretty sweet and a little unexpected, I really liked it. The bass is solid and holds it's own. Lyrics are cool and most people can relate to losing touch with someone who meant a lot in some way. Hope you enjoyed reconnecting with your friend!
I read that the vocal track was Scott and now I'm mad. He has been holding out by not singing earlier? ok, so he talking, lets not split hairs. ha
This is awesome guys! Great job Kenny, you rock! I like story songs and Scott did a great job telling one. The Sax, guitar and keys work so well together. Feels more like r and b and funk during the disco. The bass is the backbone to this one, as it should be!! The mix is always top notch.
Must have listened to this about 7 times, off to dl, thanks!
Yep, that's Scott! He's a bit self conscience about his vocalizing, but says he'll do more if it calls for it since it's gotten a good response on this one.
The guys all appreciate your always kind words. We're all setting up for our next track. Thanks again.
ok so you didn't sing on this one but you could have done some yodeling. ;)
You sure captured the grandeur and vastness of the Himalayas in this track. It is sad to see the genocide inside of Tibet being ignored by the world but on the other hand the country of Bhutan is an amazing example of how a country can respect their land, take care of their people and still prosper. Crazy mixed up world!
There is a peaceful, spiritual and uplifting feel to the track. Gave it several listens. Great meditation ambiance, my heart rate has lowered, time for more coffee.
HaHa....it seems I will never get rid of "Orlando The Singer" fans...now I should even switch to yodeling...haha!
Nice to have you here again my friend and I'm so pleased I have the power to control your pulse...it's just that I don't know what your doctor will say...haha!
I agree on your political and cultural observation of Tibet
and I'm even more excited on your thoughts about my mucic
and for getting the 'fav' ofcourse...thank you so much my
friend!:)
Really liked what you did here Rhodesy. I enjoy acoustic music a lot and hope to hear more of it here. Like others have said, it's a wonderful listen! Nice changes throughout the track giving it some dynamics. Is the same guitar used for all the tracks?
I think mother nature herself would want a digital copy and an album version for her collection.
I know spring is here now. Plus the masters golf tournament starts this week!!
Great inspiring comments from you Wayne as always my friend! The main guitar is a gibson j45 acoustic which i used for all the melody/harmony parts. The intro vamp was on a strat middle pickup set ultra clean.
Turn it up!! It has a great Sex Pistols feel to this. I would say this is punk. Live recorded instruments and a live performance feel to the recording, lots of energy and funny lyrics. You guys touring in Florida any time soon?
I used to kayak all the time and hearing this track reminded me how awesome it was, minus any mosquitoes. I would see all kinds of wildlife. One day me and a deer stared at each other about 70 feet, 20 meters or so apart. I broke our stare a good 15 minutes into it and paddled away, it was a good moment.
I have a recollection of an early morning close encounter with some deer as well. This while camping once with some other summer campers. But wow - 15 minutes is a long stare! Anyway - I'm really happy if you connected with the track. Best regards - Dan
My life suddenly seems great after listening to the march of the doom and gloom brothers. ;) Kinda spooky and dark, your description was good! Sounds like Burt is going to need cigar box anonymous soon.
Thank you Wayne for your time you invest into listening and for your friendly words.
Burt is so creative since he startet to make one cbg after the other :) so don't stop him until we finished our album :)
His cbg's have so a nice kind of sound like he recorded them in a small, abandoned hut, somewhere in the deep swamp. Just a gloomy sound like from another world :)
Very pretty little song. She has a nice voice and a sad story. Your music was perfect for her words and emotions.
It's great that you are back at it! You were using PT before, weren't you? I like with Ableton you get free updates for life. You pay a little more up front but always have the most recent version.
Yes, I've been working with Pro Tools since LE 6.9 :) So it was fairly easy to get used to, which I definitely like a lot. And because I got the student edition (full version but just cheaper for students), I only paid 300 for it! So I don't mind it at all!
Absolutely - "A psychedelic chillout stoner/doom epic." Something weird is going on when you are doing shorter songs and I am doing longer songs. The music gods are smiling down on us both now! :)
It reminded me instantly of Black Sabbath when it started, was expecting Ozzie to start blasting off. The pad that slowly comes in is cool, it adds a bit of softness to the track. The old band Foreigner used to do that a lot.
Glad you split this off of the other track and continued working on this. Even though this probably worked well with the other track it makes a great track on it's own. Good build ups and transitions throughout the track. Interesting convo between you and Cru about that.
I find it weird when I'm working on fast paced songs then I do one at 85 bpm and it sounds to me like it's dragging. This one is slow, what is the bpm? The slower songs bring out lots of emotion in guitar playing so nice riffage all the way through. The series of kick drums at about 1:10 was cool as #####!
Yes, a surprise to see you doing an 8 min song. No doubt because you just had to tell the whole story. I don't know how long the original Dylan song is.
I have been making a determined effort to do shorter stuff and have had some definite success, such as 3 tracks under 4 mins in the last month or so.
Yes, I certainly do hear the Sabbath in this though only realised it after everyone else pointed out. Something to do with the slower tempo and how I hit one big euphoric chord.
"The pad that slowly comes in is cool"
That's the sort of thing that Sabbath never did, as far as I'm aware. Big chill in this if you remove the guitar. Actually you can hear that in the last minute or so.
"Even though this probably worked well with the other track"
It was OK but a bit of an unnecessary ending. Far too good to be somewhat hidden away at the end of a long one.
"Good build ups and transitions throughout the track."
Yes, it has a very "musically healthy" waveform ie lots of dynamics and peaks and troughs. Not just copied and pasted, incessant stuff (even though I always do a lot of copying and pasting) but more like a live band.
BPM here is 100 throughout though I think the drum track is playing at half tempo so I guess it's 50.
"The slower songs bring out lots of emotion in guitar playing"
Yes, my instrument playing is best suited to slow and medium tempo stuff. I'm not a good fast player though I can sometimes knock out some short bursts of rapid badassery.
"kick drums at about 1:10 was cool as #####"
Glad you noticed as there's so method behind that. Previously, the drum groove has been open and sparse to allow big chords and some pads to flow. They are punctuated by particular drum fills for excitement. But, before it goes massive and heavy on 1:17 I know that I want to build up to that so that double kick work did the job very well. Putting them in before interfered with the groove but it makes sense when I then go into something heavier.
This is the skill of carefully arranging your drum movement and having a purpose behind each fill and cymbal hit and so on. You've go to remove drum work that interferes with top layers whilst also working out how you can use the drums to build up excitement in all the right places.
