very fine work - I really enjoyed this one. Probably this is close to what we could call 'minimal' music. At least at the very beginning of the track... I thought you might experiment with the delay effect on guitar even more to get the dub/reggae feel but instead there's a great amount of electronic glitchy sounds (I liked some toms as well) which is very nice also. I guess the 'dub' sound-image is only a result of mixing the tone of that guitar and the electronic sounding loops. I like that part from about 2:21 with some interesting bass filtering. At 3:15 it reminds kraftwerk for a while but with some bluesy, very eastern sounding guitar (at 3:26). Bassline sounds really good in here (as always). Very solid piece of music and really creative, detailed work on the track. Alex
Hello friend, I appreciate the feedback on this one! Interesting that you think of it as minimal, it seems we must have different interpretations of that word when it comes to music... maybe compared to other recent efforts I've done it is more minimal though. That's not a bad idea to experiment with the delay on the guitar more. I guess I was focusing on other sorts of automation with this one. I often steer away from to many changes in delay on a single channel, as it can really disrupt the timing of everything. More the delay was there on one of the guitar tracks to create an overall tone and stereo image when combined with the other. The main guitar parts (aside from the overdriven slide part) were recorded as two mono tracks, one through the direct box, and one on my old kustom 2x12. I think the effect on the direct recording helped with the overall tape recorded feel. To me, the "dub" of this song comes from the tempo, the lower bass line, and the specific effects used... plus a little bit of skank to the rhythm guitar parts. It's funny that I often hear people bringing up kraftwerk when hearing my stuff, as I have barely ever listened to their stuff... I take it as a compliment though all the same. Interesting as well that you found the guitar in the outro to be eastern sounding, I'm thinking it must be the slide playing. Thank you very much for all your supportive reviews!
hi, really impressive bass guitar playing, it sounds to me like there's some elements of funk style here even. Hard to explain - but it's not a 'proper' funk for sure! Seems like you wouldn't label this song under 'metal' as well. Anyway as far as I can remember your bass playing is inspired by J. Chancellor, am I correct? I am familiar with Tool's 'The Pot' recommended to me by StaticNomad which is a great composition. Maybe I will take some time to listen to the entire '10.000 Days' album some day. I have far too much music to explore ahead.
Anyway I enjoyed your song, the sound on the recording is not so clean as on your other tracks but the arrangement is good (as always) and guitar playing is really good.
Best to you, Alex
No funk or metal. I don't know what to call my music. Melodic Bass Rock?
Yes, Justin Chancellor, I learned to play bass by learning their songs off Undertow, Aenima and Lateralus.
Yes, "The Pot" rocks, but you should listen to Lateralus over 10,000 Days. Lateralus is their best in my opinion. You will surely hear a resemblance there.
Glad you liked the track, sorry for the unclean recording sound. Learning guitar on the fly!
hi Joe, I really enjoyed what you did with these loops! Agree with the comments below - this bass groove that you've created is funky and extremely energetic. A bit of an industrial athmosphere in the background (I like that!) and interesting story behind it. Creative and unique. Alex
good job. there's some filtering and processing on loops so I can only recognize only that ambient 'scream from the other side' one. kind of minimal-electro-industrial track which is nice. I did not expect using that loop as actual melodic phrase but you did it very well. again nice work on well made track. Alex
hey Joe, very cool. I really like what you did with your loops, I checked them and really you did a great job here. There was a glitchy one, some orchestral hit and the bluesy guitar groove which is a kind of a main foundation of your track I guess. I like the vocal echo or quasi canon effect and some interesting processing on loops. It sounds a bit like a folk tune to me with these vocals. Nice work on songwriting. Alex
What a friendly comment.
After cutting the guitarloop so the way that i like the groove , everything went much easyer. So you are right, this guitarloop was/is important for the track. The words realy did come into me mind while working on the music. So i could say - after the first cuttings of the guitar, all was in a way just clear, easy and pure fun to do.
Like mostly i enjoy your comment and youre friendly words about the vocals.
This folksong thing that you hear ... mmmm .... i think i must listen to the track again to check that out :)
thanks for some nice reply! Actually I can hear some melodes here indeed lol. Somehow maybe it's just extended harmonic content that always catches my attention - being a result of the original mixing of genres and my former listening experiences. Anyway I really enjoyed it again.
It was nice to hear some different guitar sound by Franco in here. Alex
Actually, when this was sent to Franco, I wasn't sure if he'd want to do it, but being the professional he is, he took it and did a great job, even though it probably wasn't a genre of his preference. This proves he can play any style.
hi, this is just very nice combined. The vocals sound like there's some highs and lows in melody range but there's no actual melody, ha! Some laidback-out-of-tune feel on this. I read some review by Spivkurl on your other track and I entirely agree with all what he's saying: it is really mixed and sounding differently from the other track currently uploaded here. I do not know maybe you are just using 'real', sounds... I mean not so 'computerized' ... haha!
I enjoyed this one a lot and the listening experience is just excellent in here. Alex
Thanks, Alex. I think your comment was a compliment, lol!
With our stuff, there's allot of different heads involved. There are jazz, rock, Latin, classical genres, and even the kitchen sink thrown in. I'm surprised you don't hear a melody. Granted, there are some counter melodies going on. Maybe that's where you perceive the 'out-of-tune' feel. We try to give it more of a live or studio sound, since we are using actual instrument when we can. Scott does the mixing and he's a stickler for timing and balance and hates compression. His classical training gives it some orchestral feel.
Anyway, so glad you like it and took time to comment.
hi Ookami, this is some very fine piece of music, probably the best production from all I've heard so far from you. Some happy and positive funky vibes in here - that's why I enjoyed it. Some nice synth lines in here as well. Is there a bit of a piano used here in the background? I think it's quite nice also. Congrats, Alex
hi, very relaxing music. Simply great collective work and good jazz vibes here. Excellent guitar playing as always. Well produced and enjoyable track. Alex
hi, I really like this. My only criticism would be that there's some slight volume changes at parts in the mix. Maybe it's just a result of how you combined those loops. Or maybe it's just me.
I really enjoyed the vocals in the background.
Good funky vibes with some very interesting ambiance. Well done. Alex
I liked what you did with it Alex. I am trying to think a little more about the funk style as I go forward with this one. thanks for your comment. best regards at this happy time of year!
sounds very promising. very funky in a way with some nice dance feel. interesting harmonies but this project can always turn into something different... very nice groove - I am not familiar with the 'gore' genre but again I see it more as a 'funky' beat.
hi, alex. i don't remember where "gore" came in but it has nothing to do with the track! i was thinking funk and now I'm thinking "industrial" but honestly I don't have a clue about genres! Thanks as always for your visits. regards- Dan
hi, very original track. I can recognize the synth sequence (0:43) from your other productions. Some other sounds are similar as well.
It's really good that you have added the vocals. Without these the song would sound quite weird. To be honest this is the most interesting element here (to me).
I am really confused with this song - maybe someone would say it's an artwork even, me not at all. It's just an original experimental track. Still I think the 'weird' genre will fit better.
It sounds like an improvised music. Alex
Hey friend, thank you for the feedback on this one! Interesting that you hear some similarity in that synth break at :43, as it was entirely unintentional. Took a lot of effort to get these vocals near the way I wanted... had to find that perfect moment where sober becomes inebriated. (It doesn't last long!) I agree that this would be really weird without the vocals. Listening back on this, I find that it's a lot less low end than I usually include in a song... oh well. It was definitely intended as an artwork, so I appreciate that. I will definitely not put this in the weird genre though, as that would be encouraging the way things are in popular music... not something I like to do very often. Thank you for the feedback!
the loop at the beginning is a very powerful one - was it again made in Reason? it's an excellent intro but also a great start into a chilled and hypnotic-kind-of mood! Overall the sound-image from 0:57 reminds me of a soundtrack from a PC adventure game I played about 10 years ago titled 'Morrowind'.
This track is probably the chillest from all your tracks! I really can't comment on it properly - each time when listening again to some parts and browsing it some new sequences of thoughts appear. For sure there's so many influences and stylistic musical reference points I can't recognize so far!
I think you have enough concepts here to make the entire full-album song, only by using the sounds of this track!
Your keyboard playing from 4:42 is very fine - really soft, mellow and soothing.
Double-speed drum-effect from 6:21 brings a very interesting colour and much aliveness!
After the passage 6:47 - 6:57 there's just a 'new take' on the same material, gradually progressing into more and more and heavy a rock kind of mood including even a very cool trance or electro type of a synth programming and an arpeggiated laser stuff. From 10:21 I can hear a different guitar electric playing (regular? vocoded?)
When analizing I have always to cut it into pieces and separate. As a whole listening-experience it is just great and simply calming music - with lots of twists and it always stays interesting!
Greetings. Yes, first couple of minutes are probably some of my biggest ever chilling.
That's because this track is a continuation of my only proper drumless track that I've ever done, called Visible Aura. Not sure if you've heard it though I've now removed it as I have 50 tracks on here and have to delete one every time I upload a new one. That's even more chilled out than this.
All the synths in here are from Reason, same as in about 90% of my tracks.
"I think you have enough concepts here to make the entire full-album song, only by using the sounds of this track!"
Maybe though you could perhaps say the same about quite a few of my tracks. But I try hard not to use sounds too much and always introduce a few new synth sounds in every track I make. So, no way I would do a whole album just with this number of sounds.
"Your keyboard playing from 4:42 is very fine"
Thanks. I was actually thinking of you when doing that and was sure you'd like it. I think Crucethus will too.
I had to make sure those higher keyboard notes didn't interfere with any of the guitar parts so went and edited them carefully after playing (including lowering the velocity of many notes).
6:24 double time drums. Yes, I had to make that jazz section do something more interesting as it's the same sort of varied slide guitar playing on top. And that double time drum section is a taster of the heavier fast stuff that comes later.
"From 10:21 I can hear a different guitar electric playing (regular? vocoded?)"
No, that's just distorted bass guitar there (playing the same thing as the synth bass under it). No guitar though most people will probably think there is when they hear that sort of sound. But that's the distortion they're hearing.
Actually, at 10:32, the clean guitar part from 1:53 returns though I doubt many people will recognise it as pretty much the same part. It doesn't sound funky anymore because the drums aren't funky.
7:54 is the most obvious vocoded guitar section, though I use it subtly in various other places in the second half of the track eg 7:08. I've used that sort of vocoded FX setup on guitar parts in a few tracks eg There Goes Gravity though I always use a different chord to drive the vocoder's internal modulating synth sound (obviously, the right chord for the track).
"a very cool trance or electro type of a synth programming"
Yes, that synth at 8:28 is not the kind of sound I normally use. Classic trance there! But I didn't want to make this a typical trance track with boring drums and a lack of melody.
I don't know if you know that some people talk about a style of delta blues guitar playing that repeats and repeats and they call it 'trance blues'. You can hear some of that at 8:50. So, I was going for something you could call 'trance blues trance', even though that's a pretty shit name.
Have a listen for some of the little slide guitar bits in the breakdown section starting 9:36.
hey. I like the piano playing on this one. This track is some very unique and original combination of different elements but it is simply great and very very listenable. Enjoyable guitars by Franco, as always. It was nice to hear this tune again. Nice ending as well haha! Alex
Thank you so much, Alex. Yes, Marc did a wonderful job on piano. So glad he worked with us. Hope he will do so in the future. A great line-up included with some you will hear in future projects.
hi. very nice remix. I like this vocal version - it has this very calming impact on me. I think you did a very good work here - the track is powerful, loud and transparent. Will you be reworking this again by chance? For me it sounds really great so far. Congrats, Alex
hi. this is really nice tune. I like loops of good quality, somehow it is very hard to make them sound not corresponding cause they are perfectly designed already. Anyway I much enjoyed your work - solid and very loud transparent mix, nothing really clashes here. Very good and tasteful use of loops. Good job. Nice funky house vibes. Alex
hi. it is really hard to find classical music of such a good quality on this site and I am really happy to discover your work. It is excellent! Your composition definitely reminded me of Shostakovich's music - I played one piano piece from the 24 preludes and fugues and am familiar with the style, his 5th Symphony is my favourite. I am clasically trained musician and I can really appreciate this song. It is very nicely written and performed! Congratulations, Alex
Thank you very much! Shostacovich is considered to be a very complicated composer - it isn't easy to play his works. And I like Prokofiev very much. But not all his works.
hi. this short piece sounds simply great and very very promising. Really soothing cinematic part but actually I see this piano progression more like a perfect start into something more. Will you be working on developing it further, or? Anyway it sounds really nice just as it is now. Greetings, Alex
