this is really nice. nice emotive arpeg. when the kick comes in the sidechain is a little too heavy and the synth is drowned out a bit so watch that. the melody was amazing real good stuff reminds me of a few differnt tracks with that epic ancient story feel(if u catch my drift). keep at it and look forward to hearing more from u. that piano. wow

StephenPotter replied Unknown
I am trying to work on that sidechain and get it perfect, no luck yet though, but I'll get there. The piano is probably the best thing about this song at the moment. Its changed a lot since the first upload of this song.

Thanks for the review!

Im not a huge fan of D&B but I luv that deep rich bassline you have and a classic vocoder sound. Nice Levels and a crispy synth, sounds good together.

I like the vocoder, I really do overuse it though. Personally I thought the levels were quite a bit off, but apparently not :P

nice, trippy guitar. love it when the drums kick in half through.

Thanks for the review and the Fav! The guitar is a actually FL slayer with delay on it, and the drums are kore player with reverb.

This is a very creative attempt at DnB, and I like the style! The mix really growls, which is very cool! I like all the synth FX you've used, especially on the intro. Nice sounding bass! The drums are really out of the ordinary, which is cool to hear. Great work!
StephenPotter
StephenPotter replied Unknown
Thanks for the review! I write all the drumloops myself in my songs now, before I used to use the FPC and some drumloops I got of the FL sample disk. The high synth FX is GenesisCM, its a great VST.

Nice. That intro is just perfect at raising the expectations of the listener and then you totally deliver on those expectations with what comes after. I love the sound panned into the right speaker (a hi-hat?) for some reason. There are parts of the tune that sound a little fuzzy, but I actually like that about this tune. Good stuff.
StephenPotter
StephenPotter replied Unknown
I think the fuzzy parts was where I messed up on the levels, but I'll probably fix that sometime soon.

on What I think (Second Version) by StephenPotter
I really like the piano intro, was pretty interesting how it built up, but I think something needs to be tweaked in that bass kick, it seems overpowering or something, I cant place my finger on it but it sounds out of place to me. Keep up the good work
StephenPotter
StephenPotter replied Unknown
You seem new to the site, so I'll quickly say hi, I'll check out the track you uploaded tommorow.

The bass kick is a little too overpowering, but this song is STILL a work in progress after three different uploads. Its undergone different piano sounds, different drums, different vocals (which I removed on this version because they didn't fit in), and its even switched genres a couple of times (started off as a big cluster of genres, including breakbeat, dubstep, trance, chillout and a couple of others).

Thanks for the review!

yeah this is really nice man...
like the automation builds etc.. and the synth work is tight!

i would recommend hitting up Holy, she has the prefect voice for this lil beat... maybe even play with one of her accaps....

all in all, this is great..
props bro!

Yeah, Holly is awesome, but if I was to continue this track a lot of the synths would end up changing, my craptop lost refx nexus, which was the basslines and the second wierd synth pad thing.

hey stephen, i thought i would respond immediatly because it seems like you want to know about the acapella and song. hmm it would be interesting to see what would happen if you combined the two. if it is 85 tempo, in theory it should workk, but i found that basically my flows are so strange that sometimes it doesn't work even if the beat is on time. so if you want to give it a go that chill, but i think you should try it, send me it, and if it doesn't sound that great to us, let me try, cause i've done a lot of acapella to beat matching work using garageband. (a cheap studio program) and i am pretty good at it. i like what you did with this one definitly a paradisey (is that a word?) sort of beat. i love dnb and this is pretty well done! nice work
StephenPotter
StephenPotter replied Unknown
Alright, I'll get started then! I think I can match the vocals with the melody, only problem now is the cpu overloads on FL. Damn pads :)

And paradisey is now officaly a word :D

man i like that pad sound where did u get that from a VST?

this is a sick DnB both relaxing and in your face with drum n bass attacks.

then u whipped a out some sick midi playing,u got it going on with this track a fav for sure
StephenPotter
StephenPotter replied Unknown
The vst is actually a free one called Kore player, I reccomend downloading it, but check the space on your hard drive. The only downside to it is that it can be really cpu intensive at times.

Thanks for the second fav!

on What I think (Second Version) by StephenPotter
i love those paino patterns they sounded real smooth and effort less

the track has good transiton as it takes u on a journey.

when i make my music i let the samples and loops take me where thhey want to go(somtimes)but u controlled this one well and made a good track.
StephenPotter
StephenPotter replied Unknown
I know what you mean about the bottom line, I think thats sort of what I did with my track this needs vocals, but that was a long time ago.

With this song I really wanted that sort of taking the listener on a journey feeling about it like people like above and beyond are able to give to the majority of their audience. The fact that you said my song gives you that feel is great!

I will be taking out a lot of the transitions, but a lot doesnt mean all of them.

The piano took a while to get right, but once I got it, I knew I got it right.

I think I learnt a new skill when working on this track. I've been able to make it so I don't make the db meter go right to the top, but keep it at about 75% ish.

Also, this track is going to have my first serious attempt at mastering.

Thanks for the review!

Wandering what your plans are with this track 'cause it feels finished. Having said that suddenly the synth stops playing leaving a gap behind.

Feels like there is more to this song then just this version, it could be a deep dark ambient track with a choir or some (Like Era). It also could be an (hard)trance track and proberbly a lot in between

Not so good as this but mayby my shapeshifters track could offer some inspiration
https://www.looperman.com/tracks/detail/68095

Good Luck
StephenPotter
StephenPotter replied Unknown
My plan is to actually reduce the number of breakdowns, think of more changing melodies than the continuos piano melody.

But yeah, it could have a choir in it, complicated chords are something I live for, and I think I could get a 12 note chord in here. Hard trance, I could easily get.

What I may actually do is recycle this track, start over, keep the melody, but change a lot of the sounds, except for the piano.

on What I think (Second Version) by StephenPotter
i think you should keep it where it is and do an experimental or ambient electro track like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odRQ2IZaG1g
use this melody like the spacey sound is used, its an interesting style.you could also get an interesting dubstep track out of it, i could help you in the spots you have trouble with for that if you need. you could make it trancestep, ill link you a track for that if your interested

of course, this could be just hearing a sound i like and trying to apply it to styles i like more than just a little

but it might be a good idea to slow down the delay, or replace it with reverb.
StephenPotter
StephenPotter replied Unknown
I worked on the song for about 3-4 hours yesterday. It has breakbeat elements to it, trance elements... dubstep? Could be a possibility. Maybe as a bridge or a buildup. Ambient? Could be an ambient dubstep bridge :D

Thanks for the review!

Ste :)

EDIT: I stuck by the ambient dubstep bridge, the song still isn't finished yet though, so it could stay or go, I haven't decided yet :)

slow down the tempo to about 140bpm...
then a hard pumping bassdrum...deep bassline...some chords...
boom you have a trance track...and use hihat and snare...
man...what can i say...its a bit trance feeling in it...
but now use the right components for your soup...what style of trance do you wanna make out of this little melodie ??? its your choice...but for trance..slow down the tempo a bit...its better...believe me ;) but that is just something i would like to do...you will make it :)
cheers...JW...
PS: yes...you are right...i checked it with the metronom...
then maybe slow down the tempo of the delay...
when i create a melodie..i always use a metronom or a kick to hear the flow of it when it plays together...try it :)
StephenPotter
StephenPotter replied Unknown
Believe it or not, the tempo is actually about 135 bpm in this clip, its just the way I've done it, with a note on every 3rd step, with some delay on, so it does seem faster than it is. Like I said in the email, I've only got a melody in it, if I added a four step kick drum, it would be easier to tell the BPM, and I'm actually working on this song as I type this, because if theres one thing doing homework while listening to songs on this site and from CDs has taught me to do, its multitask.

But like I said, I dont need to turn the tempo down, it isn't as fast as it seems.

Thanks for the review!

Ste :)

EDIT: I do normaly use a metronome while making a melody, but this time I decided not to, to see how it would turn out. As for the delay, I'm keeping it as it is, because any higher, FL studio starts to go laggy, and any lower and its got too many breaks in between. But yeah, I have a drumloop over the second part of this intro, and I actually have a small vocal loop in it now.
