Hey Wayne! So good to hear from you! It is extremely rare that I come across someone who also does not drive or have cable TV, and it makes me happy that I'm not a complete freak! Living around here, that is usually how it feels. Even without those things, without children, and without a couch, I am still paying the price for living beyond my means for many years. Life has so much more to offer! Thank you for listening to this and leaving your assessment! There was a decent amount of electronic percussion improv in the track, and I think that makes a good subtle difference. I really appreciate it man!

I did think cinematic before I posted but I'm never sure and thought it might sound a bit too grandiose.

Sorry for getting back so late at you, for some reason I didn't receive any notifications about the coments.

Yes there is a standard for commercial releases regarding loudness.It depends on the genre of music or if it's for television then it's a totally different standard.

As for how much I push my limiter during mastering...well it depends. I don't limit more than 2 dB's. So basically I get 2dB's of reduction on my final limiter.

You could add a transient designer right before the limiter and it will bring back some snap into the mix.

One of the main problems with mixes that lose life when you throw a limiter is that they are not properly balanced and the limiter triggers all the time on transients thus killing your mix. Don't be afraid to rebalance once you put the limiter there, you do have that luxury. :)

Thanks for your comments. I don't try to be too aggressive with the different speakers. I mix on a stereo system and when it sounds good through it, I listen to it over my SS system. Every system will be different depending on the levels of the individual speakers and room size. I know I have my rear speakers a bit louder since they are far from my fronts. I don't put anything on the sub channel, since your system pretty well takes care of that. It's fine for movies, but, IMO, it can be overkill using that channel for music, so I won't put the low end on the sub channel. I actually didn't put anything on the center channel. Your system is doing that. Sometimes if the vocal track isn't dominant enough, I will split that track between the center and the fronts.

Whew... Didn't mean to be so long winded!

Yeah, I can hear the INXS thing. Was never a Ministry person but I will take your word on it. I will have to look and see what Kit I am using here. I took your advice and centered the vocals more and bumped them up in the mix. I went with a more Trippy delay on them to add to the Vibe. Still not sure if it works. Drums and Vocals are my weakest spots. I have worked hard to try and be able to do okay vocals. Never really happy with them, though. Thanks for the feedback. I truly appreciate it.

Hey thanks, appreciate it. I agree that the chorus isn't popping enough and it's a little distracting in the verses, but I've tried every arrangement and it's always a little too sparse in the verses then without the kick, the chorus ends up sticking out too much. Been trying to do a quieter, more simple drum part for the verses, just to give it something.

I sure am giving the cello a good workout. I've hardly played any other instrument for the last 2 months. I'm trying to get half decent (nowhere near that yet) so I can really properly incorporate it in my music.

Until then, I'm having to do so much editing of the parts I record as there are so many errors and #####, unintentional tones.

I agree. It's really laidback, kind of classy playing but there are also some nice little rapid bowed runs. I find playing the top two strings (as I'm doing here) really quite difficult as they seem to be quite far away from me so I have to adjust my position just to see what I'm doing.

Quite possibly but I was adamant that I wanted to try making it work only with cello as the lead instrument. I've hardly played any slide in many months.

No problem if you don't like it but what you say is a bit of a surprise because that same synth sound has already occurred quite prominently twice in the track. So, check it out at 0:48 and then 3:12. By bringing it back at 7:30, I'm only returning to previously established themes so hopefully it shouldn't feel too out of place. Despite being cello-heavy, I don't see this as a natural, acoustic, organic kind of track. It's still really quite processed and progressive. So, I think the trancey arp synth fits that vibe.

Ha, I'm a massive fan of his but I don't believe he plays cello. You're thinking of one or two of his bandmates in ELO, one of my favourite groups of all time. They are a much maligned and seriously underrated group.

Hey Wayne thanks for stopping by and listening, its always appreciated. I have been trying to find more time to write and record, still not as much as I would like but at least I can do it a little. I am able to work on about 1 track a month which is good compared to the 3-4 months it was taking. I put in a studio at the school that I teach at so now when I have free time I try to get in there and utilize it. Anyway, thanks again.
