on Totems from the Diaspora by n0mad23
Ahhh..the Diaspora..well this track does have little tributaries shooting off everywhere..though I'm not sure about their religious predilection.......I think with compositions like this(multi timbrel percussive adventures) you have to be careful about changing horses in mid stream...specifically with this track I hear the didgeridoo as the target phrase and the eastern horn/flute as the chorus element..it's very easy to stand back and orchestrate from a distance(lol)..I'd like to hear a bit more space between the instruments..calls and responses..that sort of feel..sounds coming and going...It's great anyway...just my spin on it..cheers Dave

The call/response thing is crucial - you've called it well. I think you're right about "space," too which I hadn't really considered. Spot on. Someone invoked "maximalism" on one of my other tracks and I think it's an unexamined direction I've been heading. This one needs space and a melodic call and response frame. My next attempt(s). Thanks mate!

Hey mate...nice suspended feeling in the intro then the ground drops away from under you with the percussive elements...great touch..I've been listening to a bit of early Dimeola lately..he's way too fast for my ears these days..I like to savour notes..just like what's going on here..some great little turnarounds..the whole sound is excellent..Cheers Dave..ps..how's the beach treating you, well I hope.

Planet,
Thanks my bro. Still setting stuff up. Looking for gigs, etc.. here in SoCal. I dig Dimeola as well. I try to instill some of that same spirit in many works. Not much chance to get to the beach though we have done some video work down there. Pretty much digging into the archives, editing and posting. I'll send you a link to about 100 works from my personal documents. Many bands i have been in, many Live tracks, much more. Been carrying around tons of media for many years waiting for the opportunity to share. That time is now. Thanks again Planet. I'll be in touch.

Cool song..I think you may be right about the anthem tag...this ones got a nice continuity about it,everything fits and rolls very well indeed...and you even created a vst!....I especially like the vocals their understated and not overdone with any extraneous posturing...excellent work!....cheers planet :)

on When Hippos sing with Frogs by n0mad23
I like this one heaps!..plenty of incoming swell (like waves) and a lot of sonic reflections and tangents in the mix..as far as compositions go I'd like to hear a bridge section but this isn't like most compositions ,it's more like a cross section of some hot springs in action...I think you definitely need way more bottom end..the frequencies are very focused in the mid range... you'll be able to rectify this very shortly I think ;)..great work! Dave

Yes, I'm a bit fond of this one in particular, which is why I'd like to get it right. Originally 6 loops and me playing with volume and built-in effects amplitudes in real-time - this is when I realized that my resistance to electronic music creation was something to face. Music is music, and there are things that can be done with this approach that I've always dreamed of. And you looperman friends are a generous resource that I really didn't anticipate. Thanks Dave!

on Lament for the Bees by bcway
Hi Mrbc...A good ear at work here I can see...I think orchestral pieces offer a huge soundscape and big bold brush strokes work well when balanced with delicate passages..there's a definite percussive direction introduced during this piece..I'd be looking to follow that for an end run and outro...cheers planet

on Funky Mix by Randall822
Hey Randy you've been cutting the stallions out from the herd again!..I like the panning on the percussive instruments with the bass centre lining...this works really well! great mix....the guitar sound is floating superbly on top of these grooves..I'll say it again..a fantastic spread!...your mixes have taken a quantum leaps since you joined Looperman..they were always good to start with but now their top class....You could cut it as a producer irrespective of you instrumental skills...fantastic playing by the way!..cheers Dave :)

Hi there Dave,

I was hoping you'd take time to catch my latest funk tune. I don't really want to poll individual players whenever I produce a new tune. Makes it sound like I really need reviews. ;-)

But anyway, you found this one and I am glad you enjoyed it. The bass part, and actually all parts are necessary for a good Funk tune I guess from some others that I have heard. This was my first one and I wanted to make it stand out.

So I figured a good solid bass line with a clear tone would be nice. Fender has such a nice sound anyways, and so that is what you hear. (Precision Bass).
Then panning the other instruments and little guitar riffs here and there make it a 'busy' tune, but seems to work well together.

I have heard of James Brown's fast rhythm guitar, but I didn't want that type of sound for this one. (song #2)

Looperman has indeed helped me grow as a musician since my first country tune. Listening to other's tunes on here and getting feedback is important for growth. And.....reading several different books on Mastering and Audio in general has helped a lot to understand about the mechanics of audio.

I suppose I could go into Mastering others tunes, but I barely have time to get mine done because of working so much overtime.
Bye for now and thanks again for your nice review.

Cool as the blues comes..Hey Bud..way smooth man! Excellento on the blue note side of the highway...Love the vocals, their out front where they should be..the subtleties of this song are many..such as the accented rim shots in the fade out phrases and the suppressed guitar licks..feels like a dam filling up...this one is mixed beautifully....work of art stuff....as Bill has already stated..this is blues done professionally..it's fantastic...cheers mate :)

Ahh..it's very interesting when I'm listening to this I isolate the guitar..think of what I might do...when I hear what you do..it blows me away...that fluttering phrase in the middle is insane...it's a great shame that Rob Whilhelm isn't here to discuss the philosophical aspects of improvisation with you and where they can be nurtured technically...it's way over my head....cheers mate

on Yeah Right (Saxobones) by SLAPJOHNSON
Very sweet tone...I imagine when your laying down the guitar chords your hearing the melodies simultaneously...The guitar is spot on here with perfectly measured timing and pauses....a fitting vessel once filled with your flowing flute and saxophone...It just proves that you don't have to slave for hours and hours to create something special...It does help to be certifiably brilliant though!...too good man! :)

Hey man..cool chops!..am I hallucinating or can I hear a bit of Sesame' Street in there?..lol..just kidding but it's ringing a bell...Hell,I have to start at the end of this tune..the lead out is fantastic..it's very interesting listening to what is essentially a musical sketch...these exercises exist in their own right and would be great blueprints for expanded productions..I'm getting visions of Slap wired up to a brain scanner showing what parts of his grey matter lights up when he plays..lol cheers Dave :)

Hi Dave, It's baking hot over here now baby! Sesame street (Big bird and chums) lol.. Maybe in the deepest part of my melody mind that song creeped in...I love the freedom of these pieces/works, just play what comes out twice and render... Simple! Or is it? More to follow.
Thanks for the support and interest..

on Something beautiful which no one will hear by SLAPJOHNSON
Hey man...interesting formula...retrospective..or breaking down the cellular barrier between thought and action...I think one of the magical things about music is that it represents the future and the past at the same moment....It could be argued that the responses of a musician are governed by his tutelage and ability. I'm more inclined to believe that once a certain intimacy and understanding is achieved the brain takes over in that wonderful knack we humans have..we extemporise....I've met few musicians that can do this as creatively and successfully as you can....Like many of your students we are lucky to get an opportunity to learn from as well as enjoy your music.......planet :)

Hey Planet, nice words from one so wise and musical. It's a strange one to digest this improvising/instant composition. I'm having to think about what the sax/lead instrument will play while recording the guitar foundation, and trying to accomodate the interplay between the two before I get to that stage. Does that make sense? Anyway I have done another five done, so watch out for more spontaneity coming real soon..

Cheers Slap...

Hey n0mad ..interesting rhythms with great ambience..seeing as you asked for some constructive comments..my first impression is the mix is very even and uniform..also the very top end and lower frequencies are hardly being utilised...which leads me into thinking this would be a great vehicles for a solo of some description..I don't think it matters whether it's instrumental or vocal..or even human..I'd love to hear a chorus of frog calls ranging from deep to high trills..that's what I like about what you've done here it's very organic and could work with a multitude of different approaches...cool stuff!..cheers planet :)

Exactly why I'm asking for advice/help here - I agree - there's room for some sort of solo and I think that's what it really needs. I can hear a woman's voice, possibly lyric free, and I actually thought about an oboe. Thanks.

Hey Randy...I like to be the first cab off the reviewing rank on your tunes...Man!..super cool rhythm crunch, with that sympathetic orchestration it's killer (Excellent intro by the way)..I think you've been holding out on us man..your a rocking demon!.Have you bought a pair of leather pants lately? lol...Your tracks have always been great..but lately you've somehow raised the bar quite a few pegs..anything to do with your keyboard work I wonder..hmmm...Not only is the musicianship and production values first class..this track is going to be very popular with a broad audience I think......fantastic!

Hello there Dave,

Ha....your quick on the draw! Thanks for the glowing review. Glad you liked the tune throughout. I love my new Korg M-3. No...I don't own any leather pants, or never have. haha.

As far as raising the bar, I don't think I can do any better. I messed with this one quite awhile trying different parts out to see what would fit best.
Didn't even know how I wanted it to end....except I didn't want to do a fade out as I sometimes do. So an abrupt stop with a little echo after effect from the keyboard sounded ok, but still a little strange to me. :)

I actually think most anyone on this site that has been playing for a time, could do what I just did...but it's not an overnight type making tune. Have to know the ins and outs of your effects and how to make them work for you...plus some playing skills of course, and thinking outside the box.

I don't play drums, so those are loops. Getting the drum breaks right are a real challenge.

Then I learned how to 'master' as well from reading and watching a fellow studio owner in a local studio. He is pleased with my progress thus far.
I recently got a slew of Line6 RTAS software amp and effects simulations. Those are fun to mess with. Can't wait to do more with them.

So anyways, I appreciate your review and I'll review another of your tunes shortly.
Randy
