TYPO! I meant "simply"..not simple..none of your well thought out tracks can be classed as simple! :)

on Midnight Shift - Bilbozo by Bilbozo
Whoa..put the brakes on, I just drove past a Bilbozo tune! Holy cow man beautiful guitar! and a top notch track right across the board, plenty of breathing space in your solo playing (even though your going at a fair clip) must be all that live playing and awareness of the peripheral elements going on constantly, you still using the Line 6 pedal board?..I've switched to a Roland VG99 and really dig it, some awesome tones hidden in those things.....You've been away for awhile but clearly are the premier player and arranger to ever grace the Looperman community, simple awesome work Bill keep em coming buddy..cheers Dave :)

Hey Renz..always have been a big Tron fan, I like this a lot...not too busy, I always like some space around a groove so you can get back a bit and fully see what's going on, or should I say hear what's going on, verging on a minimalist motif but I think this is the inherent beauty of the piece, which turns into a very relaxing ride gazing out over the peaceful circuitry....cool! cheers Dave :)

on I Wanna Be in Love Featuring Patricia Edwards by Bilbozo
Hell mate, it's not every day that I can log onto Looperman or should I say Rapperwantedman and find a new track from one of my favourite muso's..Great stuff guys!!!.....a very cool tight groove that supports those killer vocals of Patricia's, no mucking about, no showboating just a pro sound throughout the whole arrangement, you could wrap this up and give it to someone for a birthday present. I have no idea why Patricia has downsized her musical output she's a world class talent if I've ever heard one, you just don't find this quality walking down the street, it's a rare commodity.
Enjoyed it thoroughly Bill! as for processing the vocals sure they could be sent through a Manley Massive Passive for example and you could squeeze a little more sweetness out of them, but it would have to be a very subtle adjustment.....made my day!
cheers Dave :)

Well sorry but I've got to say it like it is..This is (as they say) DOPE!....Very convincing groove people, excellent bass tone and you've got that angst ridden vocal line down without distorting or obliterating the message, it's also got a very cool contemporary vibe to it, not some run of the mill predictable and hackneyed rock beat, would have like a longer version with maybe some guitar soloing, but hey that's not a criticism, really enjoyed the track fellas, you guys rock!!!

Hey Pat...well man if your going to make music like this people are going to call you a crazy man or a genius (or both!) ;)...You definitely don't follow any popular conventions which is a major plus in my book, and I'm also a big advocate of the straight off the board sound, no presets for you that's for damn sure..I almost despair when I see all the usual suspects lining up wanting a particular genre sound, they really have no idea whatsoever and expect everything to be just dropped on their lap, I digress....you've undoubtedly spent many hours on this album which I'll listen to in it's entirety, hopefully there's some dudes out there that will draw inspiration from this work and adjust their music making accordingly. Not many can claim full propriety over their creativity like you do, writing then playing the music, making the instruments in many cases, then recording and producing the whole affair, sounds like a jack of all trades and master of lets say half a dozen!....I think everybody could do with a little dose of your crazy mate.
cheers Dave

Spivkurl replied 26th Nov 2017 - 7 years ago
Ha ha, yeah, it's fairly often that I get called crazy or genius, though maybe more often it is a combination of the two. I take either one or both as a compliment, especially when it comes to music!

I suppose that I never want to be known as conventional, unless I become a definition of a new conventionality. At this point, about the most conventional things in my life are having a pet and drinking on a regular basis... beyond that I feel like somewhat of a freak in this culture!

I did spend quite a bit of time shaping the sounds used in here. It was the first time I tried the new classical guitar strings in a song, just to make some loops... they're nice strings so far, and were definitely the most I've spent on guitar strings (not bass strings of course!).

I see that I may have had a limit on track plays on bandcamp, though I don't know if that is for the individual songs or the entire album... so either way, that is removed just in case it was keeping people from being able to hear the entire album. Pretty much no one pays for music anyway!

No matter what it is, I like the feeling of doing something myself. I make all of our own bread products, soy/seed/nut milks, and stuff. I've gotten pretty proficient at household electrician work and wiring lately, and repaired our refrigerator recently as well. About ready to refurbish the 100+ year old hardwood floors in another room, since the first room turned out good. Learning how to grow edible mushrooms, and have nine logs innocculated this year. I've even been working on becoming self sufficient in potting soil for indoor plants, after learning how to sterilize our compost (the plants love it)! I hate the feeling of paying someone to do work that I can do better myself, and I also hate fixing people's mistakes (too much ego, I know). I even try to keep my wife out of the kitchen sometimes, ha ha.

I appreciate your kind words, and your taking the time to hear my music! Have a great day!

Hey Alex...wonderful beautiful music that everyone should listen to! what really impresses me is that not only do you play and interpret superbly one of the true musical geniuses of our time in J.S.Bach but you make, restore and intimately understand the instruments that play it and bring it to life, this focus and skill is an unprecedented achievement in this age of celebrity led brainwashing and televised soporific thinking. It is refreshing and encouraging to know that there are still people like you that carry on the established traditions, your awesome and literally a true Renaissance man!

promenade2239 replied 13th Nov 2017 - 7 years ago
Thank you Dave! You're perfectly right with the instrument and 'bringing it to the life' but you know it takes so much time and energy (and relaxation time needed) to make it sound near the imaginary picture! At least it is my case. I had a particular occasion to be able to perform this kind of music in a comfortable space with a sufficient amount of energy. I do not think I carry on any strict tradition performing this music as I incorporate different things in playing: all I can say here is that the instrument was modern one but playing is stilistically more 'historically oriented' which means not 'egal' 'even' but in a sense 'affected' with a proper portion of 'swing'. So you can label it as a modern performance style in a sense.

I think I should ressurect some projects soon that will make a base for our musical collaboration, if you're still interested. Then I will contact you. Also I am really looking forward to hear your new music.

Best to you, Alex

on THE LONER - BILBOZO - Gary Moore Tribute by Bilbozo
Ahhh...classic Bilbozoness right across the arrangement, man you've got that Gary Moore sound down pat in so many ways, the tone, the fluidity of playing, just every nuance is in motion here but it goes way beyond that, I've heard plenty of guitarist's effect a certain player's style but it takes someone who is totally at ease and competent in their own playing as you've become to also achieved a comprehensive insight into the other artist's style that they can create a truly organic piece that can stand alone in it's own right and not rely on any plagiarism to get them to where the track becomes a real tribute as you've done here, I love the orchestration that's moving behind the guitar cementing the gravitas of the whole production onto a whole new level, definitely awesome work man, Gary would undoubtedly approve...mucho applause mate! cheers Dave :)

on I Like Me Better - STK Remix by NateJMusic
Hey Nate...nice mix man, definitely on the pop side of chill and there's also a slight leaning towards a Jamaican feel (very slight) a good clear production that would sound fantastic through an in house system, this was in a remix competition I take it? bad luck it didn't win sounds great!...cheers Dave/Planetjazzbass

Yeah, however, I got it placed on an up and coming Caribean artist album. You were 100% correct on its Caribean influence.

Thanks

Hey Alexander, you definitely have talent man, you obviously have a passion and are serious about immersing yourself within the medium, I think the lyrics are thoughtfully constructed and well delivered, the only issues I hear concern the actual music and production values, which are a little lackluster and repetitive, something that's not so much a criticism but where your at on your musical journey, when the music starts approaching the level your vocal ability you'll be cooking with gas, even so the song is a winner for me on the vocals alone and I sense a strong creative streak within you ...cheers Dave/Planetjazzbass

AlexanderMadeMusic replied 20th Jul 2017 - 8 years ago
Thank you! There's a bit for me to digest here so if you dont mind, I'll ask a few questions to get a better understanding of your advice. what do you mean by production values? as in the overall production of the track or the specific pieces that go in to it ie. the beat, the vocals, etc. I ask because I posted the song up as is so that I could find someone to do the engineering on the song so if that is what you're refering to here, then its kinda out of my hands but if you're talking abuot the actual beat, then we can start talking. Ive heard that the Hh on this track and the snare were especially prominent, but are you suggesting i make the drum track a bit more complex or that I add more layers and instruments to the overall track?

Hey TC cool track man!..I really like the intro and the way the snare fits within the mix, you've got some big moves happening right across the board, synth city! this is a huge sounding production with some heavy hitting dramatics involved but the way you've blended all the transitions makes for great continuity throughout..definitely a banging track which would push any house system to it's full potential...big thumbs up mate! cheers Dave

Ok I'll tell it straight.....Lately I've been watching Flash Gordon serial space operas from the 1940's which I really like....apart from the music that is which is hackneyed orchestral attempted dramatic bullshit...and I always think Spivkurl's music would be way better suited! haha...seriously though... I'm being serious!...I also like the sound you get with your straight out of the board style, initially it can seem a little in your face and slightly confronting but I've learnt this just means way more dynamic response available.....crazy but cool! cheers Dave

You can't believe how awesome it is to get a comment like this for me! I actually was pretty into Flash back in the eighties... flash ah ahhhh. I was a pretty big geek at times. I used to be a coin collector, now I'm an alcoholic. Goodbye silver dollar.

I would seriously admit to being heavily influenced by some of the most B grade films and television ever made. Repeated watching is the key.

I suppose that most of my drastically favorite groups have a tendency towards very raw and dry sounds. I've always been frustrated with too many effects, especially with different timing.

It's funny, upon re-listening, the introduction does sound very 1950-60's sci-fi. Sweet. I did not see that coming.

I always appreciate hearing from you!

Hey there mate...in a word tres cool electronica!!....I really like the metamorphic nature of this track it's almost like a musical kaleidoscope in places, the transitions appear and disappear going through a mini black hole in the arrangement and yet there's always the after image of a vestigial melody, ghosts in the machine territory for sure, at 1:16 there's an interesting apparition and for a moment I thought there'd be a solid groove starting, but you eased off into the end game, could have been much longer but I really enjoyed it as is.....cheers Dave :)

First time listener to your music LinR....Smooth and very funky groove for sure I definitely like it a lot, and the production values are ticking all the right boxes as well, you've got a great sound going on no doubt about it........There's heaps of room on the sides of this groove for added elements, at the moment everything is locked in and getting pulled along by the slipstream of the bass which is great though by adding some left and right transients with different reverb characteristics you can lift this track very easily and make it a knockout, these can take the shape of sound fx's, stabs or better yet short melodic excursions, sort of like sparks coming off a meteorite, it'll all add to the visualization....cool work, very enjoyable big thumbs up!

Ok listening now at a fairly cranked level, guitars and drums sound great!..the bass is quite boomy though, rolling off a tad at 70/80Hz should fix it...I have my sub set at about -20db which I find is perfect, no doubt urban producers crank theirs until the bowel shakes (but then it's indecipherable noise)...a very cool track indeed and I'm left with the fading image of some trainee landscaper applying gauze to his damaged hands....ps I had a similar experience with a 120lb jackhammer, though I wasn't acting cocky at the time, the boss of the ski lift building company was an ex mercenary and really liked to put us through the mill.
Evisma
Evisma replied 10th Feb 2017 - 8 years ago
My jackhammer issues were odd. Body and hands were fine, but something happened to my jaw throughout a few days. I'm sure you've experience the effects of vibrations when mowing for long periods or running heavy equipment, the resonating chirping tone produced in the head by teeth touching or any impact at all. Something with the inner ear and the fluid vibrating all day, but every sound, movement, sniff, twitch and breeze sounded like someone in my head hit a metal streetlight pole with a box-wrench. DING! Strangest thing, lasted about 12 hours, went away overnight. I was demolishing a front and back porch that were 2 concrete slabs, one poured on top of the other, (yeah), and an in-ground pool. My stints are usually short. I have more issues building decks and setting retaining walls. Tendonitis is a bitch. A week straight of pounding with a sledge on a bottom course of wall-blocks takes it's toll. Ice pack, ice pack. 15 minutes on, 45 off. Works wonders when done religiously.

Hey, sorry about the prank phone calls your country has been getting from over here. The guy has his own phone and can afford to put minutes on it, so there's not a lot we can do.

You guys should block his number.

Hey MrMofo, very very very cool! Love the Doorish vibe throughout (please excuse the comparison but from the very first note this dripped with the Lizard King's influence ) Sunny War has indeed some superb guitar licks and vocals, a talented lass! speaking of which they are placed perfectly within the mix ..totally awesome that this collaboration started at the famed Venice Beach, which unsurprisingly is where The Doors cut their teeth, it's always a pleasure to witness genuine talent and I suspect with your less than fragile eggshell like mind you'll both deliver some outstanding work together, you have just made another fan!...cheers Dave/Planetjazzbass :)

Believe me I'll take the Doors comparison - I'll take it away and cuddle with it for a while with a dreamy smile. And yeah that day on Venice Beach was a life-changer. I needed a singer, and the universe provided. The universe is usually kicking me in the nuts and laughing maniacally ... but now I have to say we're even.

Welcome to blisterland!...any guitarist who hadn't kept his calluses in good shape would have found himself in the emergency department after this, Evan this is epic! The first part of the arrangement is like a tidal bore coming down a narrowing river, most spectators were washed away, I don't think I've heard a better confluence of Superior drummer with guitar their hand in glove, the second part of the arrangement is quite sublime and creates a very intuitive release both from an emotive and production standpoint. Heavily driven guitars are notoriously difficult to mix and can easily overburden, mask and in some cases totally defeat adjoining instrument frequencies, absolutely no sign of that! There is only one slight caveat that I will mention here, I'm listening to this track through my headphones and it sounds great, however I want to give it what it really deserves some proper volume through my monitors with a sub engaged...so after "she" who must be obeyed goes out I will crank this bad boy up a tad and continue this review....cheers Dave

Greetings, Dave.

It's been a while since I got blisters, but I remember them well. I do have the permanent dents in the fingertip calluses that have very little feeling anymore. Doing landscaping for over a decade, I keep some pretty healthy calluses. It's always been a true joy of mine to see a kid spend his very first 8 hour shift with a post-hole digger. Hands peel apart without leather-palmed gloves, though they think they can handle it, and shoulders burn within 10 minutes. The look of defeat on the face of a cocky, phonegazing douche bag is a beautiful thing.

This is my second track using Superior. This is from the Progressive EZX, though I really want the $150 SDX. I'm really happy that it works well with the guitars. I spent a few days just assembling drum sets and saving them as user presets. This track really tapped my CPU, also. There were several things I had to always shut off before this thing would even play. Toward the end, I didn't know what the fixes in a mixdown would sound like till I listened to the mixdown. Playback in the DAW was not possible with all the buses and reverbs activated. 8 year old PC.

Now, I am not a master at mixing the low end, so be careful if you crank it. If there is a part that makes the door hinge pins rattle a bit TOO much, let me know.

"She Who Must Be Obeyed" would be an awesome track title.

Take care, and thanks again.

Evan

Feels like I'm plugged straight into the board!..which in affect we are. I think many things are lost so to speak on the cutting room floor and it's why releases of unheard studio takes are popular. When you strip back all the production values of any music your likely to hear these days there's be a multitude of glitches, now seeing as this material is essentially electronic glitch I guess your well ahead of the curve!... interesting stuff, I couldn't listen to it for extended periods (mind you I have the same reaction to Classical, which I really like) however I dig the processes and jam spontaneity and "happening" aspect...When most of the dudes are paddling in the mainstream it's always good to see some brave soul going over the falls in a barrel wearing an alfoil hat!..cheers Dave ;)

Dave, it is great to hear from you regarding these two tracks! You make an interesting point about the "cutting room floor." It makes me wonder what other musicians, whether my peers or whatever, would get for results if they attempted something such as this. I can think about the vast majority of musicians whom I know, besides yourself and a few others, who would probably not be capable. This is not to say that they do not have the talent, but more it refers to the computer/software reliance, not to mention the probably lack of cassette equipment.,, many of them do not even have an instrument to lay their hands on. It's a bit sad to me, but something I try to accept. You are correct, this stuff is not meant for extended listening, but more like a microdose medicine... this is partly why I chose the thirty minute cassette for this project. I was most proud of keeping the process moving to achieve the seven recorded songs in two days. Whether they are good, bad, or something which needs a new adjective, it is still more creative output than I can usually achieve. Your comment made me think of the Primus track, "Over The Falls." They rock. Thank you for always taking a listen and letting me know what you think, it is good to have an accomplished musicians support! Have a good day/year!

Thought I'd take a backward looking perspective on your music before I listened to a more recent work...some very interesting layered blues happening, definitely soulful playing which typically generates it's own organic flow, when I hear blues I usually turn off not because I dislike blues but because there's just so much crap blues being played under the blues banner as simple 12 bar regurgitated slush, definitely not the case here! original and played with feeling, if Tom Waites (spelling?) sung over this you'd have dollars in the bank...big thumbs up! cheers Dave

Yo, PJB.

Thanks for checking my rather alternative blues out. Yes, it is is some very soulful guitar playing and I find I can essentially sing along with most of it, especially the most obviously lead type of parts.

"there's just so much crap blues being played under the blues banner as simple 12 bar regurgitated slush"

Yes. I never play 12 bar and have really only ever played it in live band situations. It's a great chord sequence but I also find it very limiting. I bet I could do something interesting with it but I don't currently feel the urge to try.

I'm not a big Tom Waits fan. I wonder if this sounds a bit too beautiful for his kind of vibe though now you say it, I can hear him doing something over this as there's a darker, moodier vibe present behind the guitar. All the same, I feel he might spoil it so I think I prefer it as it is.

Thanks again.

Hello Dave, and thank you for this awesome comment! I'm thinking that the whole situation which led to this recording has much to do with whatever they were spraying aerially in the weeks leading up to the election. We would hear the planes, then see the time release clouds, then there would be "cloud" cover for days, and all you could do was hear the planes. Each time the planes made their repeated passes, within an hour or less we would start to hear emergency vehicle sirens, and we would begin to feel the not so subtle neurological effects. One such time, a woman drove into parked cars across the street, pressing five cars against each other. As the election approached, I got the distinct impression that the spraying would break after we voted. Bang! After the election, clear skies for days, and winter could begin. Still I fear that the hardships are yet to come, at least personally. ... Since I was doing vocals, everything was monitored through headphones, so if a neighbor heard something, it was those raw vocals. Your words - "I see the steps to the music room bending under an invisible force, though there are no bad vibes here..." definitely strike a chord, and they bring to mind "Ray Bradbury Theatre" I've been watching those over again recently, and the introduction, where he describes his "toy shop" and "alien landscape" where he draws his ideas from - they make me think of my studios and the process I've been moving toward. I really appreciate the feedback, as always. If I could fave comments, this would be one of them! Thank you!
