To be truthful, I'm still not convinced that me doing dubstep- even as an occasional thing.

I'm glad that the community seems to be taking this track fairly well though.

I'll take a look at your entry now :D

Really good song man! I haven't heard such minimal dubstep before, but I really like it! Your wobbles are awesome and very creative! Nice trancey synths! Well done! Faved for sure!

Glad you liked it spiv, feels good to be using more trance-ish sounds again.

Ahh Man! You totally gotta keep this 4-track mentality!

Personally, and I know you would second the concession, but I would love some bounce-downs and more reiterations all around so you get that beefier sound for this.

But yea.. Dubstep down to 4 tracks? Yup. This is great. I mean, All of the so far added "caveman" tracks definitely have been heartfelt kinda acoustic pieces (I still need to check them all out), but PERSONALLY, I really really enjoyed this one, and I may say it's my favorite so far.

Just because you did this with only 4 tracks lol.
Now imagine 16.
Nice track!
Lemmeee know if you continue further!

16 tracks.. :D
I'm just thinking of all the random FX I could put in there.

Will definatly try to get something with this one.

Thanks for the review and favourite!

I actually tend to use 8 tracks or less, even with the options now at hand simply because I like to do it live, and unlike Shiva or Vishnu, I've only got two hands.

But listening to this attempt, I'm left with the sense that the minimal approach is a good one. I really love how you've fused Trance and Dubstep here, and upon listening I'm sure that this is something that's up and coming. Good on you, you young pioneer! I really encourage you to go back and extend this one when you're ready - it's most certainly good enough to have a satisfying length before calling it "done."

Definatly not finished yet, and definatly working on it. I've already got plans make a larger build up, so that the drop is more effective. Originally, I had a gate on the master channel, but I wasn't sure if that counted as a track, so I left it out.

Thanks for the review!

Great little track, my friend, are you thinking about increasing the duration?

StephenPotter replied Unknown - 2025 years ago
Not anymore, its no longer really up to standard. I can do so much better now, and I think I'd be wasting my time if I did.

I've sort of been working on a hitlist, trying to figure out which songs to eliminate from my profile (so that I have more space to upload and so that I don't have to make an on the spot decision when I hit 50)

I'll post in the forums about which ones I'm probably going to remove.

Interesting track and pretty decent for only 4 tracks. I wished it were longer as well but it sounds great what you got!

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with it, especially considering the 4 tracks thing. I'm not used to limiting myself to that amount, but I geuss it is a useful practical skill to have.

Thanks for the review!

Nice job Stephen, this is what I would call a minimalist approach to dub and I think it shows in this case, that less is more. Really nice and the mix is flawless. I've found that sometimes my most difficult mixes are the ones where I only have one of two tracks. My only complaint is I wish it were another 3 or 4 minutes in length :)

Well done.

I kinda struggle to make long things using only a small amount of sounds.. like, I get inspired to create a melody around a specific sound, and I find it so much harder to get that melody without that sound. Its strange, it's like the sound has to fit with the others or I can't make it. Thats partially why I'm fairly proud of this track, because the bass just contrasts with everything else.

I geuss with less sounds you get to focus on more things. Less choice means you can keep your ears on specific things, being able to detect the good and bad points just like that. Maybe thats why its so difficult for many people to do acoustic stuff.

Anyways, thanks for dropping by, I'll check out your one tommorow when I have acess to my speakers (its 11pm, don't wanna wake anyone up, lol)

Nice mix Ste:) Pretty long track but I like it. I like how you kept it interesting and switched it up some. The synth's and sfx you used are dope. They really give it a liquid feel. Your vox gives it some more life too. You sure as hell put a lot of work into this track. Feels good to finally be done with it. Now it's time to start something fresh and new and not have this one sitting on the back burner collecting dust...lol... Nice work man!!!

Yeah, I geuss you guys are as sick of hearing my variations on the same track as I am making them. This one feels different though, just the whole sound seems so much more uplifting than its less impressive counterparts.

Definatly gonna be making new stuff, finishing this track is like ending an era and moving on to bigger and better things.

Thanks for reviewing the track Blume!

StephenPotter replied Unknown - 2025 years ago
Definatly need to work on the drums on this one, but I don't think I'll get much with this track though, not as a breakbeat one, but more likely as a dance-ish thing, like the original.

I dunno, I'll get something eventually.

Thanks for the review!

Excellent track, you should press play on a stage and freak out, or show pieces of art.

Excellent track. Dangerous!
StephenPotter
StephenPotter replied Unknown - 2025 years ago
I would, but this is so out of date now. Its been ages since I've made a track under 150bpm, so I probably need to re-try dancey housey stuff. This was a pretty good one at the time, but I'm somewhat ashamed of it now.
Thanks for the review though!

Yeah This sounds really good so far, as I said I will keep my eyes (ears) on this, to see how you'll end up!!
And you do not have to worry about the drums, they sounds really good!If you will not make part for wobble bass, then make a transition, and add stronger subbass and add Reece,to get heat on this relaxing vibe, this always works!(just an idea)
Keep up Stephen
StephenPotter
StephenPotter replied Unknown - 2025 years ago
I already have a sub-bass layered underneath the other one, but the volume on it is very low, so perhaps I'll boost that.

I've always struggled with wobble bass, so perhaps reece is an alternative. I would like to play around with wobbling though cause its such a fun effect to do.

Thanks for the second review, I appreciate you listening!

Nice work, smooth drums nice fx and frenetic jazzy sections that u get away with suprisingly well. I would go for a half time dubsteppy section that often works in this genre, and don't fret over the drums they sound sweet enough to me... finish this I'd like to hear a finished version. Really enjoyed the fading intro draws the ear. Congrats.

Judging from the reaction I've got from the drums (in terms of it bieng a positive reaction) I might now leave them as they are, rather than replacing them I might just add some extra drum layers.

The jazz part was just too much fun, I want to now learn how to play it so that I can do it live (seeing as the whole song was just me clicking and dragging notes).

I'll post in the forums when I update the track, so keep an eye out for it.

Thanks for the review!

There is nothing wrong with the drums if you ask me...
I love em! Once the organ came in it sounded a bit happier than I expected it to be but still this is an instant fav my friend I love this!

You should send this to some guys on NG cuz this is perfect Flash-game music! :)

Possibly, but newgrounds' community seems to hate me (I can't believe that some of my stuff from 2009 had higher ratings than my stuff now). The organ was fun though.

yikes - there ain't no generic here - a beautiful new animal you call your own - respect
StephenPotter
StephenPotter replied Unknown - 2025 years ago
The melodies aren't that generic, but the drumloops are. I just feel like the drum pattern is a ripoff of every DNB artist ever to compose, so I want to make a more original loop: but every time I try that the drums don't quite sound right.

I'm glad that you liked the track though, and thanks for the review!

I really like this so far! It's nice to hear some organ used in there! I think you've made sort of a trancey style of DNB, which is cool as I like fusing styles! Hope to hear it when it's finished!

Alright, thanks for taking a listen Spiv, I'll go check out some of your new stuff now! I definatly enjoyed making the organ though, changing it from the deafult FL one to a more realistic one was fairly easy, and the melody just came naturally.

Ey Stephen!

Great intro, nice transition, and I've just begun to enjoy, and the song ends, damit.haha! For now(1:37), you did a good job, I like that sound, something like Liquid Drum & Bass, very nice!

I also love MDA effects, especially mda subsynth and dynamics,
they give crunchy/deep sound, great for kick and synths!

lemme know when you finish this track, i would definitely like to listen the entire track!

I'll give everyone a heads up in the forum when I update this track.. in fact, I think I'll do it now. I added an extra half-tempo section to this track, needs a wobble bass though, so I gotta find a good vst for that.. preferably freeware. I'll get to that later though.

DNB with a Dubstep section perhaps? I'm still trying to think whether to do that or not.

Anyways, thanks for listening!

Really nice stephen. your mixing skills are really top notch for someone so young. you got alot of potential. wish i was that good at your age lol all i did was make tracks from nothing but loops. and amongst other things that distracted from me from getting any better at it. anyways this a great track man, remember just be yourself, dont worry about what other people say, they dont have the right to judge. well done.

and what do you compose with by the way, if i havent asked already

This song doesn't really compliment my mixing skills too much though, it clips a fair amount, and I will worry about what others say so I can improve.

I'm using FL9 and a lot of VST plugins, and I've been using it for about two years now.

Thanks for the review!

some nice ideas here brother....I would have liked to have heard a few sfx in that intro just to give it a bit of texture... I'm liking the vocal... very much like a chip dnb tune brother...as rollagee said it's not that original but still if your just trying something I won't call you on it.. I would say if your gonna keep things generic then you gonna include all the elements ...basicall what I mean is you need a sub in there..some nice ideas to start with... keep 'em coming brother

Nah, this one was just for fun.. nontheless, it was annoying when I lost it. I'll definatly be uploading some more stuff soon, I'm getting inspired by stuff by people on this site, and I recently got two Pendulum albums which are just pure awesome. my only worry is that I'll sound the same as other artists, but I'm more worried about learning the techniques right now. Thanks for listening though!
