on KharmaGuess - Blood - Gnasty Remix by Gnasty
I'm no expert on the subject, but compression levels the sounds, quiets the louder ones by squashing them and boosts the quieter ones. That's how you get a brickwall of sound. I use it very sparingly because I like to maintain the dynamic range through the track. That's the volume level from the softest to loudest notes. There's no set formula for mixing, just what sounds good to you. EQ is simply a more precise fader control for adjusting the volumes of frequencies. I think if you back off on the compressor, turn down the volumes of the individual tracks so they don't clip, that'll show in you meter as red, going over 0db, that will fix the distortion you hear. Cool track :p Keep experimenting, that's how we all learn :D

I havent used any compression, but I also have a somewhat basic DAW so it might do it automatically. Ill try changing the track levels, thanks for the advice!

Has quite the underwater feeling :D Say Hi to spongebob and Cthulu for me :p Very surreal like floating in the vast beauty under the ocean, Nice one Dan :D

hey Burton. now I have to figure out who/what Cthulu is! I'm happy if this one works with the art a little. Could probably stick some space art with it and it work just as well! Good question what differentiates those two musical atmospheres. Anyway - I am off to check out what have been posting. thanks, man. we need to crank something out soon. Dan

Joe telling people to do bad things again hahaha both of you are a bad influence ;) I like this version too! :D Quite the trip on headphones... I want to hear you do one like this composed solely with nature sounds :p Maybe we could start a competition challenging Loopers to do the same :D
promenade2239
promenade2239 replied 18th May 2015 - 10 years ago
thanks. I will be recording more nature sounds for sure. Additional heavy post-processing might totally transform even very common recording (I tried that already by recording directly from my laptop but due to lm space limitations I had also to remove this track very quickly). Still I need more time to get into the ambient but the very idea on the recording challenge sounds really fine!
A.

P.S. This was quite fast production and I used wrong cables. That's why one of synths is present only on the left channel. This is also probably my first serious take in a very proper electronic genre.

You may find this interesting :D https://www.looperman.com/forum/thread/182429/looperman-zombie-apocalypse I think a zombie apocalypse is plausible. In Resident evil, Umbrella was messing with bio engineering, kind of like what scientists are doing now... Keep experimenting, GREAT things come out of it :D well, sometimes, as long as you're not making monsters !! ;) Maybe turn the drums up in the mix a bit, I like to really hear/feel the kick, and back off the guitar just a bit as it seems to overpower, just my opinion, but sounds good :p

Wow.

What an completely creative and unique forum thread. Obviously, your forum thread concept (a suggested film scenario and artist 'fill-in' the soundtrack) is not limited to the "zombie apocalypse", but I definitely wouldn't mind if it was (I am biased, as you probably could tell).

You set the general scenario, and the soundtrack began to form from various Looperman artist, each one with their own taken on the general scenario you created. Excellent idea, and one that could actually work for someone that is creating an independent, guerrilla, low budget film.

Again, this is why Looperman and Creative Commons are so great, because it allows so many people to come together to create unique visuals and soundscapes.

Bravo to you.

Guess my comment on you other track was better suited here :O Fascinating concept, composing strictly with the sounds of our enviroment! :p The course I took was on Coursera. I remember reading a book on The Grateful Dead, What a long strange trip, and they talked about how they could hear music in everything, like the sound of the tire as they traveled down the highway, the hum of the motor.... If you listen long enough everything begins to have a musical pattern. This is eerie hahaha Awesome! Keep experimenting!
Burtsbluesboxes
I did a music class online a few months back, one of the classes/assignments ( I didn't do it :( ) was about composing using sounds recorded from everyday life and our surroundings. I don't recall the artist's name but he made an entire album that way. I think it was called Symphony of Nature. I know it's on you tube somewhere as we had a link to it to watch. It's all sounds like crickets and birds, the ocean, ect. used in place of instruments. Fascinating concept!! Just keep experimenting, that's how we learn :D

thanks for interesting comments on the nature recordings. I just tried to do some search for the video you mentioned but found only this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Cj_X0gnj4g it is some very nice concept as well! I do not have much time to go outside with all my equipment and record too much at the moment. Capturing nature properly will need more energy and hours of sitting/recording I guess... But I will be recording more of 'nature' tracks soon for sure because I love combination of background natural ambiences and synths. Not really a kind of usual 'relaxation music' but something in the manner of: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SY94KemG0E I discovered R.Rich's music around 2012 and he is my favourite ambient artist (I like Steve Roach as well but he is more ...hm... 'celestial/electronic' haha:). That album with Lustmord ('Stalker') is very dark and depressive, 'Somnium' is extremely peaceful.
I like also his 'Echo of small things', album which contains a great amount of ambient background sounds:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFKiGNlLhrY
So if I will be producing more ambient (at some point in the future) my stuff will be definitely inspired by all this stuff from the videos for sure as I really listened a lot to Robert Rich's works.

If you will find that yt link please send it to me. I will listen to it!

Well, I downloaded a video from Youtube and just made my own music to it for practice in working with video. I could upload the video, but I don't want to deal with any potential copyright issues. Here's a link for the cygnus download, its free, but beware some of the sounds are quite disturbing ;) http://www.krakli.com/krakli-cygnus/ What do you need, just some dark space/pad sounds and atmosheres? I can make a few :p

Thanks for the link. I will see what it is :)

This minecraft thing is just somekind of an idea i had (still in mind and a little already started) for a kind of a "new way to promote an album" :) ...... thats how it started.....

I think there are around 10 diffrent vinyls in the game that can be used as jukebox songs ... and i changed now intro and menue .... but you could change fuXXing everything .... so i dont know where it ends. But i hold it realy in mind, cause maybe something from your -middleage- works could be a cool soundtrack"music" , special for the night music parts and the danger music parts :)
Burtsbluesboxes
There is now, you just pioneered it Joe ;) I like hearing this evolve. That's some dark disturbing synths, I love it!! Keep up the good work 3:) Have you ever tried Cygnus? that's got some quite disturbing spacey sounds.
joecramer
joecramer replied 13th May 2015 - 10 years ago
Yeah, this is just a little bit darker in a way. But it has also something from this 110% feeling of - you have to control everytging around you ..... clarity by adrenalin -

Nice to know that you like the dark synth sound, ´cause i made it :)

Thanks for your nice comment

stay tuned
joe

- no i never tried Cygnus ..... but i am try (just a little) to make a soundpack for "minecraft" :) with cool dark sounds and music .... feel free to help :) LOL

on Stealth Matriculation Vocal Mix by Spivkurl
Big Smile :D It's like an upbeat polka tune :D Nice!! I googled Matriculation for the definition, makes sense now with the lyrics :p Upbeat is good. I do alot of very dark music but I'm actually very happy :D
Spivkurl
Spivkurl replied 15th May 2015 - 10 years ago
Ha ha, funny comment all around! "Big Smile" is a big idea in the works for Iris-T-Shirt, so extra funny there. Then there's the polka thing... me and the liquor store manager were just making icky faces about the pawn shops collection of polka records, makes me laugh! I'm glad the lyric/title thing makes sense to you... it was basically rhyming for the sake of sensitivity to those involved, and I do love rhymes. Around here, back in the 90s, we had a word for the situation you mention... "happily depressed." I am definitely more likely to be angry and happy at the same time as opposed to sad or depressed any more, but it still works. I tried to incorporate the "matriculation" idea into the recording and mixing as well, and I think it worked out well. I really appreciate you checking out the real version of this song!

on Xyilent - Gaia by XyIlent
Loving all these field recordings from space :D I must've missed the flight. I'm so stowing away on the next one! Sounds great :D If you feel some of the piano chords are too low just bump them up an octave, it really wont change the flavor of them just reduces some of the really low lows. I had to do that on a recent track.

XyIlent replied 12th May 2015 - 10 years ago

Yeah like i said below the chords are too low for me just now, but ill find a way to make it work for the final version hopefully

Great things come from experimentation! :D Yeah probably copyrighted :( I'm wondering how they used that recording of the Iceman on a commercially released album :/ Best to follow the rules here, be a shame lose this awesome resource! I use Audacity for simpler tasks now, no more arranging music in it. Ever try Reaper? http://www.reaper.fm/ technically it's not free but they don't enforce the license. The "demo" is fully functional and never disables, you just get this annoying splash screen for 15 seconds asking you to buy a license, it's cheap if you do. If you try it I can give you some videos on setting it up and using it :D there's also a ton on YT. Was this mixed in audacity? Wow sounds nice and clear :p Think ill add a copy to my music player for work, Thanks :D

I have concluded I CANNOT!! sing, even with all of todays wonderful software... :D so spoken word is good enough for me where my tracks require vocals. Have you checked out MtPowerdrum, free here on Looperman software section. I like them as much as Addictive Drums (use them both) I'll have to check out Iris :D Always love new toys :p Finally got an audio interface, You were right, plugging into mic/line in is a PITA!!! Very cool, be watching for the finished product with vocals :D

I hear ya bro. Never realized how hard singing is. I downloaded that drum program but have not used it yet. Glad the Audio interface is working out for you. I love mine.

Still trying to work on the vocals I have recorded might have to post it up as is. Not sure I can improve them anymore.

Thanks for listening and for the info.

Is that recording of guilty plea public domain? I read a book on the Green River Killer, sick F*&$#r! After 20 years I discovered where a recording of Richard Kalinsky, The Iceman, in a Malevolent Creation song had come from :O Sometimes less is more and this flows perfectly as is :D Philemonster said let the music tell you where to go, don't argue, you'll lose!! :D

Thnx for listening and commenting.

Yesterday I was cutting/pasting etc in audacity and removed the ''housy'' sounds from it. What's left over is a clean hip-hop track. Kinda liked that too. It's fun to play around and one learns from it as well....

The guilty plead comes from a doc about the green river killer. I assume it has copyrights. I don't like following the rules but for looperman I make an exception...hehe
