on Clever (smallpauls pretty clever mix) by smallpaul
Thought i'd give this one a jam since it's been a while. I think this is actually better than the one i did (which was so overloaded with bass that it makes my weekly intake of it look p*ss weak in comparison)
I think i might have to do another version that doesn't sound like sh*t next time.
There's loads of good vocal samples kicking around in the FL demo's and they are just begging to be used. Thanks for reminding me that this ones in there.
PS - I've almost got that ableton thing sussed now. It's weird actually having to play notes again after getting so used to a pencil.
Anyway, i enjoyed giving this track another blast. It's wicked with the volume cranked. I keep trying to tell my neighbour that.

on Things in the Medicine Cabinet by StereoMathematics
I could have just copy paste most of that last review on to this because again i'm wondering how such a well thought out piece has had such little feedback. I love the big siren type noises and the old classic rhodes keyboard sounds.
You do things a little differently and i mean that in a good way.
It was a pleasure to listen to this track.

i dont like the inside of the box, its dark, theres no where to sit and it smells like stinky feet. outside tho there is fresh air and sunshine and plenty of space where i can lay down. thanks for listen and the review mr. q, glad you liked it.

This is great mate. Reminds me a little of the beastie boys stuff from the ill communication era. In some ways i'm glad i'm not very skilled at hip hop because the competition in that genre is fierce on this site. It must get kind of annoying when you write a great piece of music like this and it somehow manages to slip by with just one measly review?
(well two now) Anyway, the style you've chosen is right up my street and that download button would have been pressed if it was enabled.
Mix quality superb. Sounds uplifting and funky.
A job well done!

thanks mr. q. nah dont bother me one bit. and this isnt really hip hop, more along the lines of soul hop, maybe funk hip soul hop; limitations of the select a genre. origionally i was gonna put in a bunch of audio from the kaiser report where him and stacey were talkin about the sopa and pipa bills. was gonna call it kill hollywood, but the program i use to capture sounds off my sound card stopped workin and the creative sound cap program wont save, so its been left alone. for now...
thanks again for the listen and your kind words, glad you enjoyed it.

I hear a lot of people out there who say "It's cheating when you use loops" Well first of all, they can kiss my a$$! Using loops is a great way of building tracks up that you might not have thought of by yourself and blending loops together that work with each other takes patience and a good ear. VSS, You have demonstrated in this tune that you have both of those skills and this track would work on any decent dancefloor and get people moving.
Sometimes minimal is good and this is one of those times.

Hiya Free, hope all is well in your lil part of the world my friend ? Thanx for listening & reviewing mate. Yup I don't see the issues with loops either. It's a riff that YOU have to work with and make music from. There are only 7 major notes and who the hell complains when musos use any, or less, amount of them ? No one, thats who. John Lee Hooker used E,A & B as did Bowie. Yet 2 completely different tracks eh ? I really appreciate your praise FR and am glad you kinda get what I'm trying to acheive with this track. Reviews from someone such as your good self whose work I really admire are very special for me. Thanx again my friend. Peace, Love & Respect at ya . . .

Well i know the origional is from 1984 but this kind of sound takes me back to the house explosion of the early 90's.
Old school is huge round these parts and i know a lot of peeps who would absolutely LOVE this track.
Shame i can't download it really.
Excellent work with a cherry on top.

I had approval from Newcleus to publish my remix...
It was a great honor to make this track...

See, I told you i'd be back.
This track is again bloody brilliant. This is like old school electro from back in the day. Dig that vocoded vocal and the nice electronic swirling effects that go with it.
You certainly know what your doing mr TCAS.
I enjoyed every minute of this and i wanna do one of these now.

on RUN OLLY RUN !! THE MACHINE IZ GONNA BLO GAAHHHH by bcway
I saw this pop up in the featured tracks and i liked the title so i thought i'd give it a play.
There's a lot of cool stuff going on in this track. There's elements of it that remind me a little of the chemical brothers. I like the way you keep altering the flow of the track to keep it interesting. It keeps progressing all the way through to the end. You say that you ran out of ideas, but to my ears there's plenty more than enough for one track.
This is a fine piece.

This is hot stuff mate. You can always tell when you've landed on a banger when it even sounds good on your puny laptop speakers.
I'd like to spend more time checking out your stuff but i'm just off out to lunch now.
Rest assured, i'll be back. This is great.

Ah yes! Now this is what i call a QUALITY piece of music. It sounds like you guys met up at the studio and recorded this.
Farisha sounds excellent and i'm wondering why i haven't had a go with one of her pellas yet.
The mix quality is superb and the choice of notes are a perfect compliment to that excellent vocal.
This is something for other listeners to aspire to.

Hi FR

I really appreciate your comments - thank you. Farisha is a fantastic talent and it's always good to hear her voice. I'm knocked out with "quality piece of music" - thanks. I do try very hard to get it right and it's so rewarding when comments like this are posted. I am grateful.

on Mulchefye-Fishers Of Men by Rats
I've listened to a few of your tracks and i think you've got a good, unique sound. It kind of reminds me of sonic youth with a touch of the Ramones or something.
The frantic mixture of grungy guitars, fast drumbeats and distorted vocals makes a great combo.
The vocal needs to be more upfront as already stated and maybe a little less mid range and a bit more treble on the guitars to stop it crowding the bass.
You have great ideas and play them very tightly so i reckon with a little more work on your mixdowns you could really up the ante.

Thanks for the kind man; I still dont know how much this tragedy in January has affected my music cuz I still aint got an electric guitar as yet (the final missing ingredient) but hopefully I wont crawl into a dark bag when I start recording in earnest again; Ive uploaded a new tune called Lies Lived In The Light, did it like 2 days ago with an acoustic kids guitar someone gave me, my laptop and Audacity...play loud

on And Along Came The Taoism Drunkard by StereoMathematics
This is very chilled mate. i have to agree with RogueAi. i hear a lot of dubstep that frankly just sucks to my ears but this is something far more appealing to me. The vibe is kind of groove armadaish but with a subtle twist of electronic efx.
A great tune to kick back and chill to.

thanks free, or should i say mr. q.(honestly didnt know you were nick q till i saw your comment on z's song lol and no the alien was not a dead giveaway) i too am growing weary of that oppressively loud dubstep. dont get me wrong, sometimes its good, but it has lost its air of originality. just seems that its become a competition fought with triple oscillators and lfos, first one to make ears bleed or cause a seizure wins. happens all the time in music, so i was thinkin why not make the alternative, the antithesis to the loud.
glad you liked it q. thanks again for the listen, hope tomorrow is better for you.

on music by zero2zero Mrs z meets Mr z by AmethystToTurquoise
This is just what i needed to hear after a day of things going completely wrong from start to finish. This uplifting piece of musical tranquility has just lifted the frown from my face.
But i also have alterior motive for coming here as well. I haven't spoken to kevin for a while because i left the site for a couple of years, But i was wondering where he'd got to so when i saw the forum post saying his pains had got worse i thought i'd stop by and wish him well.
We've missed his banter round here as well as his spacey ambient vibes (which i'm still listening to by the way)
Anyway, I hope things improve for z2z & wish a time will come again that he can rejoin us.
In the mean time i'm going to play this track again.

on im sick of you by DreDolla
Sick of me? Wha? We've never even met before!
Joking aside i thought i'd come and check out what you do as i saw your forum post about doing vocals.
You're very good my friend. I'm hardly an expert on R&B but it sounds like i'm listening to someone who is.
The lyrics are great, the melody is well thought out and it blends together smoothly and effortlessly. That's points scored in all the areas that count as far as i'm concerned.
I don't have any tracks currently that require a vocal but i will certainly drop you a line when i do if you don't mind?
Good skills.

on The Sound Machine by visionarysoundsystem
I saw your name pop up in the featured tracks so naturally i hit the play button. Love the big nasty growling bass lines in this. It reminds me a little of Orbitals darker stuff which can only be a good thing.
I like the way you've taken an unusual approack to the structure of the track. It's very sci fi sounding and has plenty of atmosphere to it.
Perhaps it would be better categorised under the "breakbeat" genre as it doesn't follow the standard 4 to the floor pattern. Really enjoyed this piece and i've added it to my MP3 so i can jam it in the car later.
Nice one!

Hey Free my friend I hope all is well with you ? Thanx for the kind review mate. To put me in similar aural territory with the Orbital is very high praise indeed thank-you. The beat is 4 to the floor but the way I tried to use it has certainly made for a different type of groove as you so expertly point out Free. I'm honoured, and humbled, that you wanted to download to listen again, I really appreciate that. Again my friend thanx greatly for stopping by to listen & review.

I'm already a fan of Alen's D&B work so it would stand to reason that i was going to like this. You have the skill thats required to take a loop and make it your own which is what it's all about. Nice melody, bass lines ands build ups make this number a pleasure to listen to.
Great track.

on Find The Brain by DubChip
Ah this is something i can relate to better. A cascading effect of subtle blended sounds and breakbeats makes this one a winner in my book. It reminds me a little of the stuff Orbital did towards their final years as a duo. Well it did up until the part where that fat distorted square bass thing came rumbling in, Now it sounds more like Bad Company or something. A nice transition that was.
If the download button was on it would have been pressed and that should really tell the rest of the story.
A blinder of a track Mr Dubchip.

I hear you, It's annoying when you get those tracks where you just end up listening to the same bars going round and round. I normally just "lose" them for a while and then sometimes when you find them again it sometimes just clicks. Your perseverence has paid off in this one though. I like you choice of accapellas, You blend them in stylishly and i like the way you keep on changing the pace of the track. It's slow one minute, then it picks up, drops back again, picks up etc.
This is a great demonstration of what you can achieve with a little time and patience.

I'm chuckling at our man phyrius (possibly the most critical reviewer on the site?) But always offering sound advice.
Personally i can't comment on the mix quality as i'm on the ol' "crap top" speakers. But the vibe of the track is splendid. Love those piano chords and i can't help thinking that this would convert niceley into a d&b number.
I'd be happy to oblige with that lol.

This tune has a lot of good elements to it. I particularly enjoyed it from the second half of the track when you introduced the chord sounds.
I would have liked to have heard a little more going on with the drums but aside from that i have no complaints.
A good solid tune.

That would be a dream come true :)))

To be honest, this whole music making thing has only really clicked for me this year. I was listening to my collective works from the last couple of years and it's easy to see the learning "timeline" .. i.e - the shit I used to make compared to now lol

I've still got a lot to learn, but I'm really excited to see where this is going to take me in the next couple of years :)

Thanks for the words man,.. means a lot when you've got the support of your peers.

This is one mighty good piece of work here. Your guitar variations are just crazy on this track. The only thing that's missing from it is a bit of vocal and i can't very well moan about something that isn't there. So i won't.
Really enjoyed this funky, upbeat and fun funky number!
Especially because you did the drum beat as well. I know that's not your area so bravo for that!

Hey FR!
Yea,I don't do many tracks by myself cause...well it's a lot harder...you have to make drums and play all the parts,I do enjoy the ease of just "playing".
I have some new software,Ableton Live so I'm making a big transition from the Tascam to DAW.If I can figure it out maybe I can do more original tracks.

Thanks for stoppin' by!
