Hey, this is cool! Getting near a vintage sound with tracks like this, things have changed so much in electronic music, hardcore included. I like the throbbing kick drum, it's not the usual thing one hears any more. It's funny, but hard stuff like this is usually very relaxing to me. That part around 2:45 is really cool! You've done well with this track! Glad I listened!

Hey, really fun electronic stuff here! I like the stutter of some of those synth lines. I think people tend to lump things into dubstep mostly because that is what they are familiar with, too me this is far from it, more like a time when dubstep didn't really exist. Well, you've given me a nice wakeup with this one! I enjoyed it a lot! Fave!

These tracks definitely give the impression that you are tuning in to your focused sound, and they feel more like a finished product as opposed to a "trial" or work in progress sort of song. Has the feel of good classic rock. Could be nice on a record! Jazzy, bluesy, and fun! Fave!

Thank you! Actually Zank recorded (in fact programmed) guitars to my backing track I sent to him earlier. I didn't expect this one sounding like this. Basically it's a compilation of 2 takes on his guitars (second part was first). I played electric piano bass and main electric piano (kontakt plugins). Drums are from EZdrummer (single snare electronic loop added).

Very groovy stuff here! I love the subtle width of the mix. I agree with SN that the noise (or is it rain?) in the left speaker could have faded early. It has a lot of impact in the beginning, but gets distracting later on for it's volume. Quite a cool rhythm, and good sampling! Dig it!

Quite an enjoyable expression here! Found it funny reading about your willow tree experience! I am enthralled by our willow tree in the front yard sometimes. It showed up in the background of the photo of my new microphone. We planted it and have had the pleasure of watching it grow for many years now. I like the bass part quite a bit here, very classic electronic sounding. Definitely the sort of art that I have come to expect from you. Had fun listening my friend!

Hello again, and thank you for your reply. I am in no way saying that you have been failing in drums, so please don't take it that way. It is generally all preference like you've said. I guess my ears pick up the interaction between layered drums very easily. I think the biggest difference between layered drums and other sorts of sounds (like bass or synth) is that drums are very often composed of similar waveforms... for example sin or parabolic waves, or even triangle, plus noise in the case of snares or high hats. The waveforms mentioned are quite focused on a fundamental frequency. It is primarily this that makes them fight in my ears. I generally only layer say a kick drum if one sound lacks something which the other has. Then I would focus the EQing on what is desired in each sound. Though I would much rather find or create the actual sound I want. If there are many layered drums, such as kicks or toms, then the different tuning of the fundamental will create effects which may or may not be desired. If however they are tuned the same, then those phasing issues can crop up. Many bass tones and synth sounds are comprised of various waveforms, even complex forms which can be very thin or harmonically rich. Especially when coming from different instruments, things such as frequency distribution, phase, waveform, amplitude and the like will be different. And when these are played at say a different octave, then very few issues of clashing will be heard. Sort of like backing vocals and lead vocals. I hope I have helped explain myself a bit. Thank you again for discussing this with me!

StaticNomad replied 11th Feb 2015 - 10 years ago
OK, I don't really know what to say now. It's kind of all technical what you're getting at and I don't know much about the technicalities of drums' waveforms so don't have much to say about that.

I only ever go with layering of anything that feels right. No technical considerations involved and that goes for all my music making. I do everything by ear and feel. I think I have pretty good taste in music and knowledge of a lot of genres. Therefore, I believe that if I am moved/inspired by something I have come up with, then it is good and should be explored and enhanced and, often, lengthened (that's how I make my tracks).

Are you aware that my technical knowledge of sound as well as my music theory are both very poor? I'm just a dumb, groove player with a strong imagination and feel for far out sounds.

I don't see what the big deal is about drums being composed of similar waveforms. I generally layer fairly different snares together but sometimes layer very similar ones. The effect produced is a good one, I'd say. If things aren't right, I do things like vary the velocity of the drum hit as that makes a big difference.

I always remember watching on the Terminator 2 DVD a load of stuff on the sound design. Arnold Schwarzenegger's main sawn off shotgun sound consisted of a few different gun sounds as well as something like a lion's roar to give it some distinct character. Again: these sound design people are layering anything that sounds right and gives character and that's just what I do.

I use lots of drum loops here to give the track some quite different character for me. No technical thoughts about clashing sounds and waveforms and fundamentals and frequencies and harmonics and so on - just whatever sounds good together.

Oh, looks like I did have something to say.

Thanks for explaining yourself again. You think technically about sound, I don't/can't. Maybe that's my failure but I can't see it changing anytime soon.

Hey, definitely a shining example of pop music here! I think your vocals are quite good. I guess my only concern with the mix is the lack of low end, but I realize that you can't go back and change this one, so no big deal. I'm not a big pop fan, but I appreciate the talent and effort put into this. Good one!

on A Little Bit Of Infinity by StaticNomad
Hey man, thank you for the link to this track! I'm over half way through now, and the part around 2:00 is definitely my favorite so far. Gets a bit complex as far as interplay goes during that part, and it sounds good. The flowing bass sound is pretty cool throughout, good low end. The guitar part around 7:20 is played really nicely it sounds like... I guess that makes me wish it had less effects on it, like it sounds like it has a lot of tremelo or vibrato going on, or some autopanning maybe? Okay, on to the drums. I know I left the conversation regarding your drums open ended. I'll start by saying that I can't remember how many times I've had to apologize for saying things to people here on Looperman... so one more time, I'm sorry if my comment about your drums was insulting. Did not mean it that way, and I'll try to explain what I was talking about. I guess my personal preference is split between live drumming and sequencer electronic drums. With that in mind I'll explain that, to me, once you sample an acoustic kit it is now electronic. Once those samples or romplers or whatever are used to mimic the playing of a real drummer, I almost invariably dislike the result. That is partly what I meant with the "pale version" comment. I also realize that my interpretation of the songs may be highly influenced by the low quality mp3s. While you do well in making them sound good, there is still a lot of frequency loss going on. The other consideration is your heavy layering of drum sounds, which I'm also not very partial to, in most cases. With out some VERY heavy in depth EQ work, the drums will almost always be fighting for dominance, and possibly even causing phase problems. Whether it's the mp3 artifacts I hear, or these phasing and masking issues, it's hard to say. I almost always prefer to hear a single drum sound that is nicely crafted rather than a conglomeration of many different sounds. This is all personal preference and stuff, so please don't take offence. I did enjoy listening to the track though, and I think the synth stuff you did on here is awesome!

Hi. I hope this was an epic enough recording for you, EpicRecord. Those are the type I tend to do.

I think the sound you're talking about around 4:50 is a gentle, deamy, arpeggiated, evolving synth sound that can be first heard at 2:55. 4:50 is kind of its return. Some nice notes, indeed.

Glad you enjoyed the beautiful work. I also found it beautiful so it's a shame to not be working on it anymore. I could make it far, far longer but I'm trying to make thing shorter these days so only around 10 mins is how it came out.

-

Hi Spiv.

Yes, 2:00 is the bass heavy rocking part. Just a brief rocking section with a bit of guitar in what is much more of a chilled track. Lots of bass work in this for you to check out, including high bass guitar as well in the middle funk section, though it's mostly one synth bass patch used here (and in many of my other tracks).

I'm still a bit perplexed by your attitude to sampled drums so will just have to put it down to your very particular preferences. I really don't see what the big deal is about layering them. I layer anything and everything so percussion is no different.

There's always a skill to successfully layering anything (even just two riffs playing the exact same thing) so if it's not good enough, that's because I haven't done it well enough, not because there's something inherently wrong or bad about layering.

I haven't noticed any phase problems with my drum parts. I also don't EQ them much but try to get them all working together in one way or another, using various techniques. You say/suggest I fail but I do a lot of drum work that I greatly enjoy. Some others also enjoy it.

I actually like a conglomeration of drum sounds. Again, I think a lot of what you're telling me is just your preference though I do take it all into account as I try to constantly improve.

"the drums will almost always be fighting for dominance"

Yes, but how is that any different from any other parts? I've always got a variety of sounds fighting hard to be heard, and I sort of want them all to be at the same time. Bringing things in and out and getting the balance right between everything is just a fundamental skill of music making and production so I don't see what special point you're making about drums. It seems like a basic point about all music production/arrangement.

You could also talk about how layering bass parts sound bad because of things fighting for dominance but I do that too. Hey, most of Evisma's tracks are built up mostly of layered bass guitar parts. Again: there's a skill to doing it well.

Yes, you generally hear my stuff on here as only 128K MP3s. I have no idea if WAV or 320K MP3 would make much difference to your dislike of my drum parts. Probably not. If so, then I don't know what to say - you have some very particular ears. The tracks on my Soundcloud page are all 320K MP3s.

Hey, that was an enjoyable listen! I agree that it went far away from a FR style track, but you came out of it with something creative and interesting. This really had some parallels with some of the 70's stuff like Eno and Bowie when they were in their early ambient phases. Had some cool classic sounds in there, and the drum parts were nice as well. Well done!

Digging this one! Had half a fat dragon bowl left so it's a good time to settle into one of your mixes. The break around 1:20 is quite effective, despite it's simlicity... minimal is king. I'd move to this "house" if it was in the cheap hood. Second part definitely has a cool bass groove! I like the mixing on this section - nice wide high frequencies, and a solid center. Those vocals fit in nicely as well. Enjoying the third part as well! It's just got a bit more going on, and I know how that's hard to manage, but it sounds nice to me. Had fun hearing the whole mix! Have a great day!

Awesome track! I've got to say, you seem to be the only one around who makes house the way that I remember it from my youth. I grew up with a idea of what house was, and then when I was spitten out the other end of adolescence, I found that there was very little of that sound to be found in house music any more. I mean this is a compliment of course! This track has a simplicity which I really enjoy, and I can almost picture you banging out the loops in a live setting. Super fan track! Fave!

Was fun reading through all the comments from members who no longer visit the site. I enjoyed hearing this track! I thought that the outro did sound very much fusion. All around something I can get into listening too. I dig the Zoom stuff too, and still use their drum machines pretty often. Saw a multiFX from Zoom at a pawn shop the other day for $29, and it was very hard not to buy it... looked a bit beat up though. Just makes me wonder if it's the same one you were using on this track. I like the tone you tuned in! Fun listen, and I hope to hear some new stuff posted up here from you!

Hey this is pretty cool! I went into it not remembering the theme, but hearing this has made me realize it's buried somewhere back there. Good use of stock sounds and all, and I think it could be way better with some deep and personal synthesis instead. I agree with the depeche mode comparison, especially for certain sections. Definitely an enjoyable listen! Fave!

Oh yeah, cool intro! This is definitely just as the description says! I find it hard to believe that no one has commented in this long! Reminds me very much of Skinny Puppy which is just a wonderful thing for my ears! It has a nice raw edge to it, and a minimal sort of complexity (if that makes sense). I always hear something different when visiting your page, and that's a good thing, but this is definitely one of my faves!

Definitely a cool fusion of old and new style sounds here! I'm fond of the pitch bend lead sort of synth in there, very classic sounding. Hey this is a pretty cool style! Hip hop and funk definitely work well together. The hook part is nice. It seemed like the verse part might have some timing issue regarding the vocals, like the downbeat seemed really undefined. I think the vocal is hitting a bit after the beat. Maybe this was intentional? I think the vocal would have more power if it hit on the beat, as the rhythm would be more defined overall. Loved the mix and the idea though!

on Funkiest Remix Competition MELODIC FUNKSTEP by Livingsoulsdie
I'm digging the overall mix and arrangement on this one for sure! I am thinking that the ride cymbal around 3:20 is a bit one sided, and it feels pretty compressed, and I guess that's my least favorite part of this track. Seems like a lot of people don't get into that last part, but I thought it sounded pretty good. It seems like chosing a different sound for that lead melody in the outro might get a very different reaction... like something less artificial and a little quieter maybe? I get the feeling after this competition is through I'll be pretty sick of funkstep. Very interesting effort to say the least!

Hey pretty sweet house mix here! I like the basslines much! It's a bit mainstream for my ears still, but I can enjoy the vibes for sure. Reading the comments on the song, I saw you write "Old school was my generation"... I found it really interesting and funny... I'm assuming it wasn't meant as a joke right? This is a cool and straightforward downtempo track to my ears. It would be interesting to know what the lyrics are referring to in the case of this song, though I know they are not yours. I really get the feeling you're ahead of your time, and not just your age. I was sceptical when clicking on an industrial track, as I find a lot of them in recent years give the impression of someone never having heard industrial music before... but in this case I think you've put your own spin on fusing industrial with other styles. Really enjoying the subtle power of the mix too! I can tell you are giving good attention to the mix, and not just smashing a poor mix to death with mastering plugins like is so common. Enjoyed the melodies and percussion very much! Have a good year! Faved!

Well, I'm enjoying the composition of this track, so you should feel good about that. I do have questions regarding your statement that the track is not mixed... Are you saying you didn't touch the volume faders on the channels? All pan knobs are centered? No effects or EQ'ing on any channel? I find it hard to believe, due to the differences in volume of many parts, as well as stereo placement of certain things. Correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, it has a lot of potential, so keep at it!
15ludwicke
15ludwicke replied 17th Jan 2015 - 10 years ago
Hey Spivkurl,
I should have really clarified this in the description, the track is slightly mixed, meaning volume adjustments to make the track not unbearably loud, some minimal filtering where I wanted, half-arsed side-chaining on various tracks, and other effects like reverb just thrown on because I needed to fill up space. The track, while minimally mixed, is mixed very terribly, and in my humble opinion, if a track is not mixed well, you can pretty much classify it as not mixed at all. As for you enjoying the composition, thank you! I really had fun making this track and it was really exciting to make two genres of opposite spectrums somewhat work.

Thanks!

Hey buddy, pretty sweet mix you've done here! I'm a few minutes in, and I think the only thing I didn't like was that filter build at around 2:49... the resonance was really annoyingly overdone and squealing. OUCH! I dig the bass line around 4:00 though, it's deep and fun. "Jack it up?" yeah why not! That "donk" or "thunk" sort of bass later on is pretty fun too! I enjoyed listening very much aside from the reso build! Now I need a cigarette! (Not just because the song was long... wink wink nudge nudge) kidding.
