hi again, just wanted to add something more because this is a great tune. I really like minimal tracks in a way and you did it very well eventhough there's not so many elements in here... But everything sounds balanced and right in place! I mentioned Kraftwerk because this is definitely a bit old-styled 'robotic' music. Never heard about the band from the decription but again the song reminds me of some 80's german electronic. I enjoyed the stylish synth sounds you're using here and very interesting sampled vocals and industrial noises. The reso/cutoff filtering work on the loop makes it sounds very classic and retro indeed. Very nice work on this one! Congratulations. Alex
Thanks again Alex! Maybe you know or maybe not but I am a Kraftwerk fanatic! That's probably why I like Mr.Robot's loops so much. Some of them have that retro, robotic KW sound to them. Like I mentioned, the idea of the track was to keep it tight, minimal. I can tell by your review that you pretty much heard exactly what I was going for. Adding very little elements on top of the track outside of the filtered breaks and the sampled vocal sections was the design. Letting the beat drive the track. I appreciate the comments on the production too. Always room for improvement but I'm trying :)
Really nice to hear from you again. Peace brother.
hi, really nice chillout song. I like the strings and some delayed synth sounds. I think you might just remove some strings chords or change the harmony when you introduce vocals. they don't work always well with the same loop and seems like there's something in there that clash slightly (about 1:08 mark). but the vocals sound very nice with the bassline and with the piano - it just one or two chords to adjust. Overall the song is fine and I enjoyed it. Greetings,
Alex
hi Scott, I enjoyed this nice track. really interesting use of the mellotron machine which can quite good imitate some orchestral strings effects here. it sounds very nice with the voice (1:08). Vocals have also some interesting reverb added and that works perfectly with all these mellow sounds from 2:37. really nicely done. Greetings,
Alex
hi, really nice production. very stylish and a bit old-fashioned. a groove type reminds me a little of Kraftwerk.
good work on this one - I enjoyed it! Alex
hi Eric, the first part of this song reminds me of music I could hear on some 'Classics' radio station - so some calming and nice orchestral sounds... I am enjoying much the second section: nice strings, woodwinds with female voice. This is some kind of a very old-styled chillout. Really mellow sounds indeed! I like the arrangement - it is really well done.
Greetings, Alex
Thank-you Alex. A lot of the time, I try for a contemporary sound and people say it's "old school" or "retro". This time I really was trying for a something quite retro. Seems like I succeeded. :) I'm not doing so well on Part 3. It has been a couple of weeks and I haven't heard back from the Looperman member I asked to do the vocal, so I guess its time to consider some alternatives.
hi Joe, I am much enjoying your version - its quite original and different from your last one. I can only say that at some point at 2:24 there is some harmonic dissonance between rhythm guitar (or synth, I dont know exactly - the sound introduced from 2:00) and the piano: maybe its just too much reverb provided from the original samples that enhanced during the processing produce some dissonant frequences... It's still too 'cinematic' for me... the low strings in the last section are really hard to recognize (as well as flutes - if there are any!...). But still I think this version is the best for me so far (I know only a few takes for now). I intend also to do mine version, for now I have some song based on the brass and percs. from this competition samples - you may check it if you like.
Really nice work on this one.
Greetings,
Alex
Hey Alex,
nice to hear that you enjoyed the listening.
I tryed to hear the dissonanses you wrote from but i cant get them. That may be because i have realy only cheap stuff on my side (call me mister low tech himself) and or its because i am an old man, with old ears, that listen to long to, too loud and often to bad, music :) i dont know.
I can hear the strings well but that may be because i listen to them so often while mastering. The woodwind, i would say, is the loudest sample in the 3rd part.
I will try to listen abit closer and a few times more, maybe i will get where you talking about.
Thanks for your friendly words, the help and your time.
really nice production, funny making music story process behind it, it catches my attention and it is an anchor on the entire track. really good quality of the recording, nice experiments. Congratulations, Alex
I can only encourage you to explore the sounds - Im a classical musician jumped into a laptop music making about 2012. I put much effort into this so far and now I can make some quite pleasant sounds at some point but still there's many aspects to improve and to exlpore... I'd just suggest you to do so and have fun with it:)
Alex
hi again SeriouslyJoking,
I think my approach to music is quite different at least at the moment... I use a lot of EQ and effects only to enhance/get rid of some frequences... But I really like the raw and basic sounds... I am currently working on some acoustic track with voice and piano and am aware that it could be easily 'overproducing'... It's really hard to give some useful advices on your song. It depends on you and how you will progress with all that ... meaning the less of effects added the more realistic and natural sound you get... I hope.
Alex
I'm not really sure what I'm going for with this particular song, I'm actually also working on an other song at the moment and trying to learn all sorts of things to make that song sound the best it can and this one popped out from that Project, as I tried to create sweeping pads with the 3xosc (and failed miserably as you can hear - no sweeping sounds at all).
I'm with you there when it comes to preferring raw and natural sounds really but it's not suited in all musical styles I guess.
Looking forward to hearing that new acoustic song of yours!
/ SJ =)
hi Geophase, this is some quite interesting tune that reminds me of some 8bit patterns work... At least that's how I see it: a musical nostalgy to the early 90's atari-amiga games.
Greetings, Alex
hi LSD, I do not think that there's really something to improve there. Your version is just different from the SBM one. You're giving only more priority to the piano (which I like) in the first part, to the waves and FX (too bad with the guitars) in the interlude. The last part (and also the very last one) sounds quite spacey and dreamy with a lot of reverb provided from the original samples... But there's far too much reverb added there so you have to simply cut up the recording like this at the end instead of just let the sounds melt away naturally...
hope its useful,
Alex
hi, really nice one. at some point it reminds me of a cheap 8bit tune. its because of the simplicity of the synth you use.
but still great: pads, pianos, some plucked instrument even, bassline - all sound quite similar... I really like your work.
I think you could also turn the drums louder. Overall really nice piece. Congrats,
Alex
Hello Alex!
Noted and agreed about the drum volume.
About the 8bit chip tune sound - yes I tried to keep it very simple and not add much reverb at all (which i always overdose).
Also tried to follow the drum line with all the synths so had to keep the sounds kind of dry. But I think I compressed some of the sounds too much, the song is sounding VERY flat. Have to get some of the dynamics back if I redo this some day.
Thanks for listening!
hi, this very fine chillout with some relaxing guitars and calming pads. really good job putting together all this into such a nice song.
very pleasant sounds to my ears, really nice guitars.
Alex
nice tune. I think you might give this oriental voice on 1:36 more priority and create entire song on that instead combining all of these samples from looperman members. but still it sounds great.
A.
I think the foot you added provides very interesting colour to the recording, but I feel like some field in the frequency spectrum remains empty: foot, massive kick, far vocals and instruments with some highs enhanced... but still much more space...
Interesting work. Very nice arrangement.
Alex
Im delighted to hear the complete piece and the progressions you made with it. I like the things you added to create dynamic. first part takes me to a magical spacious oriental temple or a empty desert. industrial guitar-lead agressive sound and decadent last section seem to be some presentation of fight and effort. nice work. Alex
hi again, somehow I need to add something as I was progressing working on the SBM samples of the PV song.
Maybe it is only I do not like some 'cinematic'-style sounds...
Yes, definitely do no like them at all... haha!
Hope that brings some clarity to my last comment.
Sorry for any confusion and all the best to you,
Alex
Hello again! Yes, I too am not the biggest fan of most cinematic music. When watching movies, I often will watch ones which have an unusual style of soundtrack. I like to be able to listen to the movie without watching and still enjoy it. Don't worry about confusion, I thrive on it!
hi, I am enjoying much the way how you develop such an amazing composition only from the simple 4 initial steps... this is great!
Congrats and greetings,
Alex
hi again and thanks for your reply. I really like what you have said about the inspiration - I think this is pretty creative approach! It hepls me also to become more familiar with your work here - I see that you use even quite short melodic motifs in a very fine and effective way. I am really enjoying that. Greetings,
Alex
hi, firstly great and chill Rhodes piano! Excellent music. I become your fan here and this is a really great tune from you! Not too much to say for now only that I love your vocals and all what you did with this song! Congrats,
Alex
hi, I am much enjoying this track eventhough I wasn't listening to your last version and don't know all the 'story'...
I like the work you did on the guitars here combining many guitar lines together in a very interesting and quite original way... really good guitar stuff you're playing over - I like that! This song has some a bit old-styled blues-rock groove to me...I'm only courious about your inspirations for the song like this... too bad I'm not so much into a rock genre at the moment but for sure can appreciate your playing!
Greetings,
Alex
As for inspiration, I get a new melody for something stuck in my head at work and I'll keep humming or whistling it to myself and when I get home, I hum it into an MP3 player I have with a voice recorder feature, just so I don't lose it. Later I'll come across that melody, pick it out on the bass guitar and fire up Studio One and record. I rarely have six-string guitar in my tracks. Almost always all bass guitar.
hi again,
yes, I agree with you and actually am enjoying this raw sounding jam session... Your guitars and vocals have this laidback and improvisational feeling in this song... I just tried to speculate somehow about the possibilities to re-arrange it...
But agree with you that 'overproducing' is not quite good here...
Great guitars - I like them a lot as well the vocals!
Alex
Alex,
TY for that man, you just made my day. The vocals were the last component I added on this mix as I had been toying around with it daily while focussing on an Amy Winehouse (RIP) feel. I am glad it worked out as this was my first serious Jazz attempt in 38 years of guitar playing (and singing since as long as I can remember).
I am considering focussing on a Jazz project for a while…I would love to add harmonica to it on a song ( I kept hearing harmonica on this song but didn't want to steal and of my Les Paul's groove).
Mark.
