If David Lynch made a dark, Hyper-stylised Western movie, this is the soundtrack it would have. Not only is there a highly sophisticated arrangement to all the different instruments, there is also a ruff yet enticing texture to the sounds you've used. It is at once dreamy and unnerving. I could listen to this all day.
I'm not a fan of Lynch films but I think you're right that this track might suit some sort of film made by him. There's a weird and beautiful vibe to it, with the second half getting darker and weirder. The drumless intro has more beauty and no weirdness, I think.
"a highly sophisticated arrangement to all the different instruments"
Thanks. There needs to be so that nothing is interfering too much with anything else. It's quite a mad soup of sounds so careful mixing was required to stop things getting too messy. A bit messy is OK - it can add vibe and grit.
I agree with "dreamy and unnerving".
You know I tend to go for the far out and beautiful but I would like to do more very acoustic sounding stuff. Combining that earthiness with more far out sounds is a deep, powerful mix. A bit like a didgeridoo - both very earthy and far out at the same time. Slide guitar can be a lot like that too - lower notes are earthy and higher notes are ethereal.
This is beautifully arranged. Every instrument has it space to shine. The delayed guitar, bright piano, shimmery synths, organ stabs and funky bass lines all interplay to create something really fun and exciting.
I spent the whole track thinking "How the hell did he get [insert instrument] to sound like that!".
Wow. Despite your use of a bad microphone, your voice is really great. The instrumentation and mixing is really well levelled and mastered. There's no point when the production slips. Great work. Can't wait to hear it with your new microphone vox.
Thank you ^_^ I am glad you enjoyed it. Very happy to be recording again, and will be doing more after Cyber Monday... I'm still writing, and I will be visiting the pages of everyone who visit mine and check out my work. Really looking forward to putting better quality tracks out. Still looking for a vocalist who's interested in singing the songs. ^_^ I'm just a writer, so thank you doubly for the compliment.
I'm loving the soulful funk feeling that this track has. The interplay between the piano and the bass is nice. The playful little saxophone parts sit nicely in the mix and colour the music well.
One thing I would say is, for me, the piano stabs get a little repetitive after a while. Maybe try playing around with the EQ, Reverb and maybe pan it about as the track progresses? It's only a small quibble. The track, as a whole, is really great. I enjoyed listening to it :)
I think i should too upgrade the saxo volume no?
About the piano, you're right, it's a little repetitive! thanks for the advice, I shall look how I can develop it in the purpose to establish itself better in the general atmosphere!
I kinda like how it starts out as a straightforward funky track, then runs off into different genres. It like the glitchy vocals are travelling through different soundscapes. It's disorienting, but fun as well.
Also, the title is amazing :D
Thanks! I'm glad you think it works. Sometimes I think I'm nuts for trying to fit these different sounds together. As for the title, in the first part of vocals I keep hearing 'You said lets eat, there's pudding for you...'
You did a great job with the chord progressions. The whole track has a euphoric sense of joy. The transitions are also on point. They keep the track moving along nicely. I'm pretty sure this will be in my head for the next hour or so.
This is a really powerful piece you've given us. The strings glide in slowly; making us feel solemn, yet serene. The low-end piano hits preempt the build up nicely. Everything is not too saccharine; there is heartache here as well. The following progression drives the point home. Life precedes death and we are now faced with the ever-after...
I love the beautifully sparse arrangement. It really allows the vocals to shine. I'm definitely getting a Florence and the Machine vibe from the chorus Vox.
It's a good message and shows that sometimes it is best to protest against injustice through empathy instead of anger.
Thanks for the listen and comment, TA. Florence and the Machine - I hadn't thought of that but now that you said it, yeah, definitely! Yes, I am full of rage, and it scares me. So I am trying to turn it into music instead of something ugly. Focus on the things I'm for and not the things I'm against. It does me some good, at least. Again, thanks.
This is really good man! Very addictive. Loving the modulated vocals and the bass. You give a classic 8-bit soundtrack a beautifully modern update. TOP SCORE!
Just as an example of the cellos versatility this is a masterclass. As an example of precision, dynamics, production and composition this is a masterpiece.
The smooth grooves during the opening minute are really infectious. The way you slide and bend the notes create that queasy head-spin feeling that one usually gets listening to psychedelic music whilst really fucking high.
When you bring the higher strings in, a sense of tension is created. We feel that something is building, something big. And then the distortion... MY GOD THE DISTORTION! Really blows the dust out of your ears as it slams you back down to earth.
Thankfully, you give us room to breath around the 4 minute mark, a moment to say to yourself "what the fuck just happened? I want more!". Then you give us more and its balls-to the-wall awesome.
I don't know many people who could make something so face blisteringly awesome with a guitar, and you do it with a fucking cello!
Good review from you - sounds like a honest outpouring of what you really think, which is rare on this site.
Sure, the cello is quite versatile and there are more sounds that you can get out of it than you hear in this track.
"smooth grooves during the opening minute are really infectious."
Yeah - they are some very compelling, catchy riffs that are augmented by little cello extras, including some percussive spiccato playing. And some damn cool slides. It is a fretless instrument so it's good to take advantage of that feature. Not the same on guitar, unless you have a fretless one, which hardly anyone has (including me).
"queasy head-spin feeling that one usually gets listening to psychedelic music whilst really fucking high."
I don't get high but I know what you mean. Slides can induce a slightly queasy feeling.
"the higher strings in, a sense of tension is created."
Yes. I love that effected violin patch and must have used it in at least 30 tracks!
"And then the distortion..."
Indeed. The first sort of distorted thing you hear is, arguably, the organ. It's a fat sound. And then the cello gets distorted.
"you give us room to breath around the 4 minute mark"
Yes - nice to have a bit of a break there. Back down for a bit more steady chilling, backed by the heavy rock kits that are playing in a restrained manner. Some new, clean cello parts and then back up for a final bit of balls-to the-wall awesome. I was concerned about the transition into the final heavy section, thinking it might be a bit awkward but I reckon it's OK. The final section is hopefully a bit of a hard-hitting surprise. And rather minimal for me.
"I don't know many people who could make something so face blisteringly awesome with a guitar"
Probably can be done by anyone who really knows their rock music and how to seriously riff it up. Grunge was kind of my musical birth, back in about '92, so I'm quite familiar with it. And then I progressed into so many more styles, as you can hear from my many other tracks.
I really recommend hearing the following cellometallo (cello metal) track I made as it's better, more epic and perhaps heavier than this one. Again: no guitar, just cello doing all the guitar work. And that effected violin VST again, plus some cool electro stuff.
Wow. This track is impressive. Sounds insane the first time you listen to it, but it's complexity shines on repeated listens. I especially love your vocal performance. Like the composition it shifts and slides around (through it's pitch and through panning). It's quite easy to believe that the narrator is lost again, because everything keeps changing, even himself. Obviously that is just my interpretation. But it's cool that the track made me engage with it.
Thank you my friend! "Sounds insane the first time you listen to it, but it's complexity shines on repeated listens." This part of your comment made me think deeper on how people interact with me in my "everyday" life. As if only those who have interacted with me regularly in the past can understand how I react to things. Possibly this is part of my recent legal issue. The vocals took a bit of practice, and with the tempo of them it was difficult to give the song a good length. There was definitely a bunch of different influences to the vocal/lyrical aspect. Getting "lost again" was a primarily external issue, and is a very positive aspect of the idea. It was celebratory, in a way, as I have been charged with three crimes in the past four years, and have avoided trial or real punishment in all cases. I always appreciate hearing other people's interpretations, especially in my lyrical work... this is part of what is so valuable about the looperman community! I'm happy that you listened and enjoyed! Thank you!
What an awesome collaboration. Like all good protest songs it really gets the blood pumping. When people try to tackle important issues in music, I often find that they have good intentions but no conviction. The whole message lands flat against deaf ears.
This song has a lot of passion from all the players and that is infectious.
TA, you just made my day. As far as passion, you're talking to a guy with the Bill of Rights tattooed on him, and the Preamble, and...goes on. You never know how things will come across to others and sometimes you just feel plain crazy, like am I the only one who gives a shit?, so your comments made me very happy. Thank you!
Loving the imagery of the vocals and the mournful crawl of the tin guitar in the background. Can't wait to hear what it sounds like when you've finished the mix. I predict goosebumps.
This just kind of happened hahaha I was playing with my newest toy before work and thought hey that would make a good loop. Recorded, uploaded it. Then said hey that would sound cool looped with some slide lead played over it. Then I said Hey I have those cool spoken word pellas... :D I'm going to make a video too. When I get dug out from this 3 feet of snow. Mournful crawl desribes it perfectly! Just look what us stupid humans are doing to the earth and don't even care. I don't have pics yet of the guitar yet but it,s made with one of those 64 oz Danish butter cookies tins, the large tin. Love the sound! Thanks TA
Wonderfully clean production. Everything glistens as it rides across that smooth bassline. It's practically begging for a country/pop vocal track. The only thing I can think of to suggest, is that you consider maybe stripping things back at certain points. Like have a refrain with just the bassline, or lightly brushed chords on an acoustic. Just a thought. Still sounds amazing anyway.
I agree with everything you said in this post. Sorry for replying so late haha. Life has me busy. It will all change if I can get some vocals on here (eventually :P)
Loving the good vibes flowing from this track. It's like someone slowed down the Mario Power Star song and added a house backbeat. Very aptly titled, as it makes me want close my eyes and pretend I'm sitting on a tropical island with a cold beer :)
Great track man. Everything flows nicely and the vox are on point. The pads and the lead parts colour the track in a way that grabs the listener. Can't really think of any negatives. It's pretty damn good.
This is really fucking good. The production, the composition and the word flow are all on point. Especially love the line: "we running through the valley of the shadow - grab ya battle axe - hack some zombies". Made me smile.
Great composition. You really captured the essence of the art sonically. You can almost see the water rippling as pieces of ice slide down into the depths.
Been so busy lately I haven't done much music. I had Martin Luther King day off and came across Dan's art composition which I usually participate in. Winter is the theme this time so I had to blow the dust of my cbg and play a little something :p I love the way those guitars can tell a tale all on their own! Thanks TA I trying to do one for a pic from the dust bowl era, not for any competition, just for fun. Pictures have a way of inspiring audio tales.
This is some heavy shit! It's the kind of track that punches you in the face then commands you to dance. Great use of sound effects. Really gives the track an extra bite.
Great stuff.
Sexy, hypnotic and mysterious... these are 3 words that people might use to describe me. However, this song is bad ass! Makes you want to walk into a gritty western bar, order a whiskey and glare cooly at the locals as you pick your next gunfight victim.
It will also work well with a joint, a comfy recliner chair and El Topo playing on the TV. Awesome stuff.
Both scenarios sound exciting ;) I guess this could fit under blues, country or even folk. I like the hill blues which combines all three. I find cbgs to be quite hypnotyzing to listen to people playing, LOVE em! Thanks TA
I will admit that I hit the play button with some trepidation. Often the supposedly "good" mixes that you hear as bonus tracks on singles are lazy shite. And then there's plenty more home projects flying around the internet that are the same.
How wrong i was to doubt you, this is an awesome mashup. Sounds great from beginning to end. I love how creative you were with the vocal samples and how you bring them together in a fluid sequence. Nice one man.
