Dude, again a strong piece of work from you. can you PM me your Antares auto tune settings if you would be so kind? I have some ideas as well of expanding that vocal sound to make it wider in the mix and even more compelling. to me that vocal effect reminds me of a human cello. The cello is the most expressive string instrument and can convey emotion. This is awesome cinematic work. favd.

Thanks Cru! this week end, i went to hear a friend reggae / dub band. So after the concert, i gave us all my dub tracks. They listened to them and they told how they were surprised by the mixing: Only the kick should be more present.

i think i'm going to ask help near a friend who's job is sound engineer :)

Thanks again!

Ahh, late night back from work. I make a nice gin and tonic (perfect mix of gin, lime and tonic water.) then I sit back and listen too this. I think my blood pressure has fallen to an acceptable level, and I can finally relax. mate this is some fine work weaving Ed´s guitars and composition with the beauty of your Piano playing. We have reached Nirvana! Only Gabriel, and Ferry and maybe Gilmour have reached this level of intimacy in there arrangements. Bravo...Bravo

Peter, Bryan and David were there because of too much gin and tonic...haha...Joke aside my friend...I'm sure our friend Ed would be delighted to read this too, and personally I like the idea of music as blood presure leveling tool..:) Thank you so much for your kind words and the fav as well...means the world!:)

on VOLKANO DANCE MIX by Timmons2
Nice Mix, Alexx Marie´s vox reminds me of the Canadian artist Allie X just a bit. My only critique is that the beat is more like a 2 step and so might be harder to dance too. (unless you developed a volcano line dance?) I was almost waiting for a section where you drop a 4 to the floor beat with the same rhythm and bass structure. But technically the mix is great.
Cru
Timmons2
Timmons2 replied 7th Nov 2016 - 9 years ago
Thanks for commenting. Believe it or not, I hardly ever do records like this because I know there are other producers who live and breathe this genre of music. I actually tried the 4 to the floor beat but it didn't work the way I wanted so I stuck with a 2 step as you descibed it. Normally, I just make more Pop/R&B and Rap records when I feel froggy. I've even tried my hands in a couple of Rock records that I have on my page but Dance/EDM or Electro have not really been my expertise. I tried to do some things outside my comfort zone but sometimes it doesn't translate well. But thank you for the feedback, I'll take your words for consideration if i decide to tackle this genre again.

Hey Mod. I love how this builds. For some reason while listening to this was a fantastic experience, which means to me technicality aside the artistry took hold and transplants you somewhere else. That´s what we as artists are always striving for. You did that here so congratulations on a great piece of art.

I like this one and how it meanders along building subtly. Reminds me a little of Roxys dream-home heartache in how that style of writing just builds tension in the listener. Also a little Radiohead Kid-A like as well. I enjoyed my listen.

Thanks a lot Cru, glad to get your take on it. I'm not familiar with the songs you mention so I will have to check them out. This is just basically a result of playing around with some Hall reverb and Delay to push the limits of decay time from the effects.

I agree with mosaic. great mix, nice stereo seperation and clarity. And I agree with you about the high frequency issues. Have you thought about adding a cutoff filter for that High synth stab that could slowly descend as you play the phrases?
Overall nice job.

EricMilligan
EricMilligan replied 2nd Nov 2016 - 9 years ago
Steve: No, that actually didn't occur to me. I did try EQing that track, but I do have some other filter plugins that I could experiment with. Good idea. I am assuming that you are suggesting automating the cutoff point on the filter to progressively cut back on the high frequency content as the phrase plays? I've never actually automated anything in my tracks other than volume and pan. This is a good opportunity to learn something new. I think it's pretty simple to do. Just need to read up on how to do it in Logic.

If I'm successful, I'll post a new version and, as suggested by Mosaic, I'll remaster the track to give a bit more oomph.

I love the intro you made, and then you bring in Burton´s dirty swamp guitar, except you cleaned it up in the mix. Needless to say, it´s a great mix. 4:02 we get a hint again with the creepy opera sounds. truly haunting and cool evil chorus ending. nice job on this remix.

Greetings Empathic Blowhard!
So the VD is the Clap picked up from multiple percussive elements. I do know we developed our percussion technique´s independently. I found the synth farts flatulent...does that help?
On a second listen the intro has the sensibility of a TV show Theme intro.
But I do believe that all of us on the site do influence each other, with our comments, thoughts, sounds and deeds in measurable and non measurable ways. and that is a good thing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvI9JFd6SG4
Yes it´s Celine...and Yes it´s her performing Queen, but she is using (and acknowledges during the performance) Lindsey sterling, a Quebec violinist who has made waves with her physical violin interpretations.
Also another Queen interpretation with Lindsey and 4 Canadian tenors.

Those string instruments are the most emotive instruments. To me the cello is the most expressive instrument. eep on learning, it´s all amazing.

Regreetings, Davy Crucket.

Empathic Blowhard? What's that supposed to mean and how did you come up with it?

"VD is the Clap picked up from multiple percussive elements"

That's a very oblique and cryptic percussion reference. How could I have guessed that?

No fuckin' way - you're now sending me Celine Dion links! When you said Celine, I thought: "No, surely The Cru Dawg ain't sending me Celine Dion videos. Must be some other Celine".

I watched a bit of them and, amazingly enough, didn't like them. Why didn't you just tell me about Lindsey Sterling separately? Yes, she sounds good though I'm sure there are loads of great violinists about. Not something I know much about. I don't know much about the cello world either.

"To me the cello is the most expressive instrument"

I don't really know what is, apart from the human voice (though mine expresses an inability to hit notes or have any decent tone).

If we ever meet, I will Crubake you for at least 45 minutes in a preheated oven. I shouldn't think it'll do any good, though. You'll still probably taste disCrusting.

Hey Eighteen.

I have never heard of ¨ Vocaloid Progressive Ambient¨ as a genre before, but I am glad I stopped bye this song. I really liked the energy and sound you have created. Sort of a mash of vocoded and formant sounds with a chip-tune sensibility. Music like this pushes the envelope and creative boundaries infinitesimally. Really good work.

Awesome mix Steve, I love the sounds and the voice fits so nice on the mix. Are you using Magix Music Maker? Magix just bought Sony´s Acid (formerly sonic foundary´s acid). They just rehashed the Sony Acid pro studio 10, but I have to say the sound is better than the earlier acid pro´s. And this is great sounding as well. great job.

Hey WKS, This is great, and the production is spot on. When ever I want to listen to top shelf production on this site I am never disappointed listening to your mixes. Now what asidRN has said makes a lot of sense and is very good advice. he is right, let the vocals shine. I think that might be my only critique is to bring the vocals up in the mix just a hair more. But the instrumentation was awesome, and i thoroughly enjoyed my listen tonight.

Wow, I loved what you did, awesome work. Hated the ending, only critique is to back off the slap a little on the hand claps and lower it in the mix a bit as well. but I love musically what you did. It has a nice space in my speakers, certainly a home run!

Purposeful sounding opening synths. the cello almost sounds vocoded here. And there is the beat at :46 has a groove with the strings sounds like Amish disco. see now your picturing bearded men in black dancing around a disco ball drinking cider. This song is like Anxiety music and keeps building in intensity. 2:11 on. Less psychedelics and more sub bass as we break it down with that groovy beat. 2:55, some string stabs. 3:56 comes the deep drums. Your percussion style on this song has a few layers and i like that as I love layering on levels of percussion. Halftime, in the eye of the song at 4:52, waitimg for the songs whirlwind to start blowing the other way in the second half, and it doesn´t disappoint. the second half is like a cranky creepy cousin just waking up from a 2 day nyquil (tramadol nightime) nap.
7:15 on with those string phrases reminds me of Morocco and it´s exotic sounds. ahh I thought the build up was going to lead in a wicked guitar solo, but it went into synth farts instead. 8:55 we have a fill to a new section. Not sure if I like the abrupt ending.
All in all a mystical journey filled with danger and education and some venereal disease. vgenital warts aside it is a strong creative output from you.

There Cru was just a-walking down the street, singing Cru-Ah-Diddy-Diddy-Crum-Diddy-Doo (over the latest hit song by Mr S. Nomad).

The opening synths do indeed have purpose and it's a simple but effective bassline. No cello until 0:28 and it's certainly not vocoded so perhaps you're mistaking synths for cello before then.

"beat at :46 has a groove with the strings sounds like Amish disco"

I like the idea of Amish disco. Probably no synths in Amishland. I presume they also have no computers so probably don't have fat beats like these. But acoustic cello would be allowed. Do they drink cider? Possibly.

"keeps building in intensity."

Yes - often a key feature of my music. 1:54 it gets somewhat Eastern and heavily psychedelic. And sort of trancey.

"Less psychedelics and more sub bass as we break it down with that groovy beat."

Yes, at 2:54 there's a move away from the intense, heavy psychedelic stuff to something more chilled and spacious, with the groovy bass coming to fore. Got to provide some variety and give the listener a break from intense stuff.

Lots of layered high string stabs as that section progresses. Might even be 7 or 8 cello parts as things get more intense around 3:56.

"percussion style on this song has a few layers"

Yes - loads of drum loop layering that's related to what you do though. Not sure if you've influenced me (a bit?) as I layered drum loops long before I'd heard of Cru.

"second half is like a cranky creepy cousin just waking up from a 2 day nyquil"

Good to have a breakdown and get rid of the drums and then build everything up in a different and intense way again. 2nd half is very different from first but uses many of the previous sounds and instruments so there is hopefully good continuity.

"7:15 on with those string phrases reminds me of Morocco"

Didn't think of that at all when making it but I think I can now see a link. No idea why as I'm not playing anything Moroccan. Just very simple bowed cello notes. And then a cool funky high cello lead arrives at 7:38 and gets seriously embellished, with more and more layers being added.

"thought the build up was going to lead in a wicked guitar solo"

That would totally have fit but I'm playing very little guitar these days and seriously focusing on celling it up and using it as much as possible so never considered adding guitar.

"it went into synth farts instead"

Good synth farts, I hope.

Last couple of minutes is probably too long and needs to be edited down but I thought it might be your favourite cos it's banging dance music, with fun squelchy synths. Aburpt ending should be better but I tried lots of things and could do no better.

Yes, it's a dangerous, mystical journey but where is the venereal disease? Did you pick up some genital warts when you travelled through Morocco?

Static Squelchmad.
