I won't go into my customary detail as I remember you not answering some of my previous track reviews. So I'll keep it relatively short, with the assumption that I'll be wasting my time taking the time to say much more.
Lovely chilled intro and those drums are perfect when they kick in. Good snare. Not a tone I've used before.
1:22 awesome little drum fill.
And the track just keeps going with all sorts of excellence going on. True fusion and very much my kind of thing so big congrats from me (and many others).
Best track I've heard from you (also a fine mix) and very much related to what I do.
First thing that stands out here is your very fat kick drum. Also the dreamy pads. Quite a predictable combination of sounds to start with but then it gets better when the main bassline kicks in (0:36).
So, pretty melodic stuff. Around 1:07 can I hear some very subtle vocals in the background?
This would be quite popular on dancefloors around the world as you can definitely move to it. It's probably a bit too commercial for my tastes but then that's me so nothing to worry about.
I appreciate it for what it is and imagine it was fun to make. Well produced too so I don't have any particular improvement suggestions.
It’s good you checked Imogen Heap out. Very popular not-quite-mainstream artist who does a lot of impressive stuff. However, she does so much vocally within a single song that she often does some things that I really don’t like. She basically does a bit too much and can be a bit too quirky and weird at times for me. But the best stuff is excellent.
It was Farisha’s breathy stuff that reminded me of Imogen, as well as some of the higher articulations.
Good luck on a better ending. You have so many vocals to choose from to try adding delay to as I suggested. Or you could do some mega time stretching eg make a vocal phrase a few times slower so really long. I’ve done that in a few tracks (eg see my track Cult Of One, you’ll probably like the female Asian vocal in that plus its mega time stretching in the second half).
“lobby for 'ambient acapella' as a new genre”
Please also lobby for ‘psychedelic’ and/or ‘psychedelic rock’ for me as it’s ridiculous that there’s only one catch-all 'rock' genre. Hell, there’s even 8 bit chiptune, which is a seriously specific, narrow thing.
Hi. There's some very weird technical problem going on for me with this track. It says it's 3:46 but when I play it and move to different points, it says it's about 20 minutes long. So, my time references are probably very wrong. This makes it much harder to give you an accurate comment. Anyway, I thought it was a cool piece of music, so here is my attempt at a review.
1:29 and now the groove is very similar to The Cinematic Orchestra's The Awakening Of A Woman, which is brilliant piece of music.
It's a ride-based drum groove I really like. Lots of space and very chilled out. Bass sounds a bit like a double bass.
2:15 and now the groove has got faster and the keyboards busier. Rhodes is the main thing here. Great and classic tone.
3:01 I prefer it when it drops back down into that cymbal groove.
This is some deep music a lot like Cinematic Orchestra, who I love.
I can't really hear any vocals in this. Where are they?
I know what you mean by this song being a 20min long track - in Windows Media Player it shows 21:52 - I will try to convert it again and fix that, thanks for pointing this.
I will re-upload the track soon.
Basically the bass groove was inspired by your 'Think big feel small' descending bass notes (here on slow 6/8 sections) - I guess it's a kind of a common jazz bass phrase anyway. I added ascending bass line on 4/4 faster sections - this metric combination is good and simply makes the track interesting and more 'fusion'.
There's just a little bit of the vocals here at 2:40: it says 'Time is the father of truth' or something like that. Wanted to add more vocals but I couldn't find something that will fit this song so only one short sentence.
The bass sound is from Kontakt virtual bass guitar layered with MrRay22 e piano bass. The Rhodes is from MrRay22 plugin as well - the monosynth solo is MinimougueVA plugin. Many effects added to the instruments (mostly EQ and reverbs, a lot of compression). I am not really happy with the soloing - I used only a standard midi controller keyboard and tried many times but because I do not really practise playing like this so I had to adjust some notes afterwards. The jazz drums are from EZ of course - some ethnic percussions from ferryterry and other percussive sounds to create more mouvement and some interesting colours.
I love this song from Cinematic Orchestra - after recording the bassline and e piano chords in 6/8 I realized it is quite similar to the beat from 'awakening of a woman'. Of course there's no real instruments on my track and I only tried to create an illusion of the live band performance. On the Cinematic Orchestra's song there's excellent and subtle instrumentation.
Many thanks for kind words and detailed comment. Nice to hear you liked my work. Alex
Hi. It's really a lovely piece of music and I respect that it's vocals only.
Reminds me quite a bit of some of the stuff Imogen Heap does, though she's also an excellent music producer and instrument player. Even won the Grammy a few years ago for best engineered album. Check a track from it called Last Train Home to see what I mean.
The autotune is mildly annoying at times though not really too much of a problem. The beauty of pretty much all those vocals still shines through.
Even if it is just lining up loops, it's still a fine creation and also a suitable length.
My only significant criticism is the very end. Not quite definitive enough and really just seems to cut out. If there's no obvious end vocal I suggest taking a long one and adding big delay in order to just let it drift and fade away. Would be a fitting way to conclude this fine vocal piece.
I think this genre might be called 'ambient acapella' but who cares anyway.
Thanks for the comments - as always, very constructive and informative. Listened to Imogen Heap - see the resemblance especially with 'Hide and Seek' although this doesn't touch her work.
I'll work on the ending - and lobby for 'ambient acapella' as a new genre.
Thanks again - regards,
-clindsay
This really is true fusion music and I mean a specific thing by that that I'll now try to explain.
I end up having to put quite a few of my tracks here in the 'fusion' genre - mostly because nothing else seems to fit and there's no 'psychedelic' or at least 'psychedelic rock'.
I'm generally not happy using that tag and listening to this track reminds me why. I think fusion is actually a proper genre (often 'jazz fusion') and not just what you get when a bunch of genres are mixed together. This track I hear as a classic example of that fusion genre. It's certainly got the jazz in it.
I'm not particularly into the fusion genre, even though I do a lot of music making that has a great deal in common with it. Maybe it's the somewhat meandering sort of vibe or the slightly atonal jazz aspect. Hard to say. 0:04 is a classic sort of atonal jazz fusion chord. It might even be your bass.
0:57 those high notes really catch my attention, especially at 1:03. Quite theremin-like there and a cool sound.
Fat, solid beat in this but perhaps your bass tone is the standout element. I don't mean just the fine playing but that the tone really adds the character that I think a more regular bass guitar sound just wouldn't add. I still want that sound. Must get a fretless bass someday.
2:30 that's a good snare.
3:28 I like the rocking guitar, especially the weird lead. I think it does drown the drums (and thus groove) out a bit but that's probably just about OK.
4:54 guitar solo is also pretty damn cool. With some tight, funk guitar behind it.
It's overall a well produced and even better played track featuring fine performances from everyone involved. Makes me think of live music rather than home listening type of stuff.
Maybe the closest thing I've done to this sort of jazz fusion track is the following one. It kind of sounds quite acoustic but it's all sample-based keyboard instruments and modified drum loops. No live, recorded instruments, for a change.
Think big feel small..I like that,in fact that would somewhat describe my feelings when I look at insect life, which greatly interests me........I've always considered 'fusion' just as you describe it....though sometimes it masquerades under it's post 70's moniker of 'jazz rock'...(have to prod Looperman into getting a Psychedelic genre!)....my bass tone here is from an 5 string instrument I built myself, and which is about to undergo some major reconstructive surgery (deeper chambered body amongst other things and removal of the magnetic pickup so it's only a bridge piezo) this track's sound was 75% magnetic, 25% piezo...It's a pity we don't live in the same town,I'd come around and show you how to make one(or build you one! lol) about $450-$550 outlay in materials for a bass that would cost many thousands if bought retail.........thank you for a very cool review mate,Slap and Zappo deserve the major kudos here as I'm just the bass player! haha..will be checking out your track and many more!..all the best Dave :)
It's a very impressive stirring, epic track and I'm not surprised it took so long to get right. I sometimes spend years on tracks though these days it's more like months.
Are you using some programmed software acoustic kits? I use Superior Drummer and EZ Drummer expansion packs and some of the fine drumming here reminds me of some of the stuff I'm able to get out of that software. You certainly enjoy big fills and double kick work (me too).
Shitloads of good guitar work in this. If you're really not such a lead guy then you've definitely worked really hard at it. Lots of great runs and big solos.
2:16 mostly drumless breakdown is big and epic. Crowds enjoy that sort of thing live as it's exciting seeing the drums return, as you know they must.
4:45 useful breaks around here which are a bit of a relief after all the prior guitar onslaught.
I don't love the vocals but they're a classic hard rock type that lots of metallers love. Along the same lines, I don't like Bruce Dickinson's vocal style but millions of others do. As already mentioned, the vocals could probably do with being a bit louder in places. Or guitar turned down a bit.
I can hear some of the orchestral parts but not the flutes. I guess they kind of merge with the orchestral parts. You probably could have provided more variation in the track if you had brought the orchestral parts out a lot more ie turned the guitar down. There's already so much of it elsewhere.
Finally, I love your very conclusive ending. Perfectly done!
Check this for me doing some flute metal, though it takes quite a while to get to it:
Thanks for the in-depth feedback, appreciate it! I'm using EZ Drummer with the Metal Machine expansion and a lot of the fills I'm using are from that expansion which is probably why they sound familiar.
A lot of the orchestral parts, flutes, and effected guitars merge together in a big mush, which is kind of the effect I was going for. I will definitely check out your tracks shortly!
Hi. This is some pretty impressive, creative stuff.
The first groove is instantly good and has a weird, swarming sound to it. An interesting shaker sound panning from left to right. Quite a strange, busy, swampy feel to it.
Then a big change as all that extra percussion drops out at 0:48.
Then the percussion returns a bit later.
1:03 that's a cool psychedelic synth part.
1:36 it feels like it could really do with a fatter kick drum to make it more powerful.
2:24 a tinkly lead and I really hear the rythmic panning on the synth and percussion.
After your breakdown around 4:30 you return with lots of parts that have already been heard. They're good parts, nothing wrong with them, but I guess I was hoping for some other progression of the sounds and maybe some new ones. That's just me being picky and honest about what I would like to hear.
All the same, it's good and interesting work.
P.S. Glad to hear that you enjoyed Valvedriver's stuff. I was pretty sure you'd like his music.
Thank you very much for the kind comments and thank you for the constructive criticism. Sadly I can't go back and remix as the masters were destroyed. The last part was intended to be so as vocals are to come. I want to try something elaborate with layering and effects so I tried to leave some room and intended it to be samey so that your attention will be drawn to the vocals. Yeah and really like Valvedriver's stuff :)
I do like the sound of this one and sort of half remember the original from a while ago.
First bassline is great and reminds me strongly of one of my favourite basslines of all time, by one of my favourite bands of all time - Ozric Tentacles.
The 1st part was the bass that Dank had in place already, the part that
I played started at 1:26 to 2:02 just that section is where I played the Bass...
Funny thing is, he didn't have a bass in that section, so I put it in...It worked...
Hi. I think this is good, even though I'm generally not keen on a lot of house.
It is indeed a cool piano loop (pure hi NRG dance music) and I can see why you think it's the greatest in the world. But don't forget that there may be better ones to be found on other planets.
Some fairly catchy vocals here. I'm going to guess the Patricia Edwards one starts on 1:11 though that could also easily be a synth.
3:03 could be her too. Nice delay on that vocal. Classic dance there too.
Lots of stops and breakdowns in this one.
One small suggestion is for you to beef up the hats in the track. They seem a bit far back in the mix and I think you could make certain sections groove a lot harder with some more prominent and powerful hats. Also maybe use open (or at least more open) hats as yours are very closed and small. Hope that makes sense.
Otherwise, it's well produced and one that people will enjoy in clubs.
Hi Static!
Ok, I'll rephrase it: It's one of the best house piano loops in the universe.
About the three voxes - I didn't repitch Patricias voice that much higher than usual (but I know she really doesn't like to have her voice pitched at all so I'm playing with fire here). But I relly needed a high pitched womans vocal and those are hard to find.
The one 1:11 is a synth! It's a loop by MrFunctastic.
RarCharm has the chorus line and Isaiah Page has the slightly nasal little vox(and is sounding very good even though).
I'm still not happy with the arrangement in this song, especially the intro is still not good. And now I've been listening to this song for too long today. My ears are telling me to stop and never come back.
About the hats - yes I hear what you mean. I also Think the whole drum line is a bit dull and undynamic, maybe it's the closed, distant hats.
Have to EQ some more also to make more space. I still don't know why the tracks sound so different(usually better) in the DAW and loose a lot while rendering? Maybe it's the CPU.
And then there is the mastering...
Thanks for listening and for the advice!
I don't think people will ever get to hear it in clubs though. =D
Or maybe they will, one can only hope ^^
So this must be where R Kelly got his title for that annoying worldwide hit. Sue that fool for some big bucks!
Nice, big piano intro. Good sound and playing. Vocals are subtle and work fine.
I'm duty bound to say it and you'll probably tell me you can't hear it, but there's a big, big " pop at 1:24. An edit/sample switch no doubt.
1:38 and airy, wandering arps that I like. Not expecting this but I am expecting some stock house beats soon. Will they come?
Good introduction of whiplash clap.
2:27 shit gets a lot cooler with that killer ride. Reminds me a little of some d'n'b and jungle ride work. I should use something like that in my music.
2:41 lead pad sound is very beautiful. Nice, slow attack movement. Not a sound I've heard in your tracks before (I think).
I keep waiting for a big beat to drop in this. Maybe after the next drumless breakdown.
No, not really. Just kick work.
4:42 and you're getting on your kazoo for a bit.
I'm still waiting for a steadier, fatter beat to drop but instead it's some mysterious weirdness and pitch bending in this dreamy, lazy chill track.
6:43 and the piano's back as a sensible return to your starting point.
Overall: good work, good mix, good sounds etc. My only real suggestion is a steadier cooler beat after a while as this seems to be crying out for it. It can still be chilled out though I do also like the drum work you do have (otherwise I wouldn't say so).
Mega electro funk workout coming from me soon. A continuation of my track Reckful. Will probably be called Bright Side Of The Sun.
"So this must be where R Kelly got his title for that annoying worldwide hit. Sue that fool for some big bucks!"
I have, but he threatened to pee on me, so I declined. (even though I am half German)
"Nice, big piano intro. Good sound and playing. Vocals are subtle and work fine."
Thanks as I am not a natural Piano Player but completely self taught.
"I'm duty bound to say it and you'll probably tell me you can't hear it, but there's a big, big " pop at 1:24. An edit/sample switch no doubt."
Nope I hear it, in future edits I will smooth it out.
"1:38 and airy, wandering arps that I like. Not expecting this but I am expecting some stock house beats soon. Will they come?
" Nope they will not come in this song. so buckle up.
"Good introduction of whiplash clap."
When a problem comes along... you must Whip it!
"2:27 shit gets a lot cooler with that killer ride. Reminds me a little of some d'n'b and jungle ride work. I should use something like that in my music."
I am thinking of breaking down the elements of this song as samples for this site so stay tuned!
"2:41 lead pad sound is very beautiful. Nice, slow attack movement. Not a sound I've heard in your tracks before (I think)."
That may be true.
" keep waiting for a big beat to drop in this. Maybe after the next drumless breakdown."
Nope not gonna happen in this tune
"4:42 and you're getting on your kazoo for a bit."
No Dum Dum (flinstones reference) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71kiXjLfpoL._SL1500_.jpg
No Kazoos or Ducks were harmed in the processing of that sound which went through two synthesisers.
"I'm still waiting for a steadier, fatter beat to drop but instead it's some mysterious weirdness and pitch bending in this dreamy, lazy chill track."
PSYCHE!!!
"6:43 and the piano's back as a sensible return to your starting point."
I love Coda's as a reference point in a song!
"Overall: good work, good mix, good sounds etc. My only real suggestion is a steadier cooler beat after a while as this seems to be crying out for it. It can still be chilled out though I do also like the drum work you do have (otherwise I wouldn't say so)."
Glad you liked the drums. Interesting that your clamoring for dance beats now.
"Mega electro funk workout coming from me soon. A continuation of my track Reckful. Will probably be called Bright Side Of The Sun."
Spam Spamity Spam..spam spam.. ;-)
Gimmie a C, Gimmie an R Gimmie a U Gimmie a C Gimmie an E Gimmie a T Gimmie an H Gimmie a U Gimmie an S Whats that Spell? No Seriously I am Illiterate what the hell does that spell?
Damn, this is really impressive stuff. The main thing that stands out for me is the surprisingly powerful vocals for a chillout piece. They sound like they should be in some hard rock/emo but, oddly enough, they work.
Cool pad intro and then at 0:32 you get the groove going with that kind of arp synth.
0:47 piano is subtle and playing all the right (low notes).
1:51 after that intense vocal I'm expecting it to kick into some 150 BPM metalcore or punk or similar. But no, it's some cool, fat kick chillout. Nice merger of genres. Piano really comes to the fore there.
This is very musical and I shall say more another time but it's a fave for me for now.
How much of this have you played, how much is made up of samples?
Hi. I like the movement of the bass before the drums enter.
Then at 0:42 the lead simple bent note guitar part catches my attention, as does the what I think is tabla arriving subtly behind it.
Then some good far out pads become more prominent and this is some pretty relaxing, gentle stuff but with some groove and solid bass.
2:27 overdriven guitar is good but seems to be fighting with the mix. I'd suggest dropping some other elements eg the pads to give it more room. Drums are also getting a bit lost.
I'd also prefer the drums to have more changes as they sit quite flat for too long and are a bit too steady (though it's a decent groove). I thought the return of the drums on 4:11 was a good opportunity to come back in with some different drums (probably more powerful).
My kind of vibe and melodies but I'd prefer a clearer mix and a bit more variety, that's all. You may be happy with it exactly as it is.
Thanks alot for your honest and comprehensive review. You have good points in your criticism of certain elements of the track. I was well aware about those shortcomings even before your comment came in but I just don't have enough time these days to arrange things more carefully and also diversely . I hope situation will change in the future...
Hi. That's a really classic synth house organ riff. I guess it's a loop. In fact, it's so classic, I was hearing the vocals from a few 90s tracks in my head as I listened, especially Show Me Love by Robin S.
Now that is a hell of a tune. Big classic smash hit right there.
Everything sits pretty tightly in this fairly minimal type of track.
2:10 those vocals are a bit of a surprise but I quite like them. Kind of seductive. Certainly nothing like Show Me Love.
Are you able to hear some of the audio pops in this as one loop moves to the next? Eg 0:07, 2:09, 2:17, 3:41 and no doubt other places though they're masked by the drums on top. You can fix those audio pops.
Overall, a decent 90s house dance track but I guess I would have liked a bit more variation in that classic organ house loop.
P.S. Damn, big congrats if you really are only 11! I had no idea but I totally understand your point about not wanting it to be mentioned. Hey, I'm only 3! Well, not only 3 but there's a 3 in there at the start...
Thank you! I can see what you mean about the Robin S stuff (btw I love the synth used at the intro of Show Me Love), i'm actually a big fan of the 90's Eurodance Era (my favourite is 'Surrender Your Love' by the Nightcrawlers, such an underrated tune, I love the bass on that track. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P06Xa80nd8g)
I tried to make the tune as minimal as possible, but yet still something to dance to (e.g My Love by Route 94 & Jess Glynne is very bare and minimal but still very groovy.)
It was really hard to search for a perfect acapella but when I heard KnowKontrol's acapella I was like YES THIS IS PERFECT! I knew that there were going to be complications and the vocals weren't going to be to everyone's taste but I liked it 'cos I'm familiar with KnowKontrol because I have previously used one of his vocals on my track 'Can You Feel Me?' listen to it here: http://www.looperman.com/tracks/detail/155018
Aaaah, the audio pops. I am aware of this; and hopefully this can be fixed.
Yeah, the main loop came from WongKiShoo, not me! I would've replicated it but honestly, it didn't really work. I could get the sound that I wanted to.
And the fact i'm 11! Ahahah, not many people do know I'm 11. Lol, your in your 30s? Huh!
Sorry if this reply is big, that's just the way it is...
Hey, this is pretty good stuff. There's a guy on here called Valvedriver who would probably like this. And you'd also probably like some of his music.
I like the vibe right from the start. Dark but not really too dark. With that beat I guess it's kind of industrial techno.
0:38 synth that joins in with the guitar is cool and works well off it.
One criticism of the track in general is that it seems to be based around the same root bassline. You do quite a lot of good, well-produced stuff on top of it but it starts to feel a bit samey after a while for me so I'd suggest changing that riff. Doesn't have to be a key change, just some other bassline.
Other than that, it's a good collection of sounds that fit well together in a track people could dance to. I'm guessing you're not playing guitar here but I could be wrong (you didn't say).
This is interesting work. I didn't think it was that cinematic at first but then changed my mind the more I listened to it.
Your dry lead synth is a pretty cool, delicate sound. Then we have a reverbed tight, gentle drum beat that makes me think of hip hop. And some stuttering little bits of what might be vocals.
0:57 there's something slightly awkward about the key change (difficult to explain). But all the elements there are good. And I like the drop at 1:26 back down into the main groove. Maybe your drums should be a bit louder as they kind of get a bit buried. But they have the reverb on them so it would make sense if they took up more space, with the non-reverbed instruments kind of sitting underneath/within them. Not sure if that makes sense!
1:31 maybe some "wrong"/atonal notes there. Makes it a bit darker.
2:17 I love that lead, hanging note!
I think this could be very effective soundtrack music for tracking a busy but chilled out, emotive scene.
thank you for taking the time to listen and give constructive tips! I think I understand what you mean about the drums and reverb, although im having a difficult time hearing the key change you talk about, even though I made this, I guess my ears are just less sensitive. Overall I was going for a macro feeling and Im very curious what you would say about my track called Driven, about to upload it. Its a bit of the same and exactly the things you say may also apply there, so please :) Thanks again for taking the time and peace out,
Leo.
0:42 and you're getting glitchy. Those drums seem very dry and close to the listener. But the other elements are pretty far out and distant. Not a problem, just your way of working. I'd probably prefer them to have a bit more reverb.
1:14 delayed vocal is cool. Makes me think of an Asian vocal.
1:31 great sound!
1:48 and now we have some deep bass and more busy, noisy record hiss stuff. Cool glitch vibe now but it is also pretty damn chilled out. Makes me think of my favourite glitch album Fahrenheit Fair Enough by Telefon Tel Aviv. Do you know it?
3:30 drumless breakdown is good, as are those spinning synth sounds.
Lots of work here and I can see why it took so long. Really good glitch music. A mix of cold and warm, emotive sounds.
My only complaint is the chopped off ending. Does it perhaps segue into another track there?
Greetings. Yours is not a name I'm familiar with on this site.
I agree with JoeCramer. I'm also a delay and reverb obsessive but I think the track just has a bit too much. It kind of makes it all a bit noisy. If you can, try removing some reverb from the drums. Or the guitar. Or a bit of both.
Or you could have no reverb on drums but reverb on guitar and vocals and then switch the reverb around for effect and variety at different points. So, reverb on vocals and guitar not on drums, then reverb on drums not guitar or vocals.
You can be quite creative with how you automate things and give the track a different feel in places.
Otherwise, I think it's a good vocal that's a bit unusual for reggae. Probably wasn't recorded with reggae in mind.
Guitar and the drum groove is good too.
Also, I think it could do with more of an intro before the vocal arrives to et the scene. And a proper, more definitive ending might also help.
Good luck and let us know if you update and I'll listen and comment again.
First of all, you are right, I am not a regular user, I have been for like two years without recording anything for several reasons, besides I really enjoy playing music but I don’t enjoy so much mixing and mastering etc. so I get bored quickly and also I don’t have all the time I would like for making music so I rarely finish a song.
In regards of the reverb, I like reverb in drums because I use the reason’s redrum drum machine and for me it’s the only way for making them feel more like real drums or, at least, real enough for a “non trained ear”, so I am thinking in cleaning the reverb and the delay of the guitar first.
About the vocal style, you are right again, I think the original style is dubstep but since I heard the acapella I wanted to try it with reggae.
I agree with you in that the start and the ending of the song need more work, in fact this is like a sketch, I didn’t want to spend more time in it because I wanted other perspective and some feedback , so I appreciate your advice :). I have already several ideas for the intro and the end of the song, and I want to record the bass again and maybe the guitar too because what you hear, is the first take in both instruments. I hope I can update the song soon.
This is cool. It's pretty pumping stuff but I can kind of see why you've stuck it under Ambient as it has those chilled out elements though I see it as more obviously dance music.
Good groove and big clap but my favourite part of the main beat is the sort of bass clav that rumbles along nicely underneath that lead. Subtle but it also makes a lot of difference.
1:36 people can really dance to this kind of thing and it's something you can get lost in. Not dark but it's got some slightly menacing vibe. I guess it's kind of deep house.
2:18 lead is cool. Bit of a talking vibe to it. But then it sort of seems to give up a bit. Last 40 secs of this track is it kind of winding down, which doesn't seem like a really satisfactory way to end things.
Maybe it's a little short, like you should have done more with that lead I like. Perhaps bring in another to play off it. Just some small ideas.
Good work anyway, even though it's not the kind of stuff I'm most into.
Hello Static Nomad
Thank you very much for your kind words I will bear your points in mind.
The shortness of the track I thought to keep it short and sweet to keep the element of boredom out of it.
However I do agree with you about the base, I started it initially then I add the melody to it.
Thanks again
Jamid
Greetings yet again, Spiv. I guess I’m mostly back to offer congratulations on winning the competition. I have now seen you in your different T-shirts (that’s really what it’s all about, isn’t it?) on your blog, though I’d say you were a little more prominent in the shots than the T-shirts.
One thing I’ve been impressed with is how the good mixes really brought out how good a piece of music the original actually is, providing it’s mixed well. I didn’t really think much of the original, though I completely understand that was the point as the errors were intentionally left in. So, overall, quite a skilfully constructed piece and competition.
Seems to have really caught on, with so many people giving it a go. I really couldn’t be bothered to check any more out after about 7 or 8. They started to all sound way too similar.
I’m still mildly tempted to do a perversely different mix of this sometime and I must also do that with your Nitr8 classic (eg banj metal). But I’m always so busy knocking out my own little pop tunes. *
Anyway, congrats again and maybe the most impressive thing you’d done with this mix is get stuff to be so loud and powerful. Interesting as it’s basically an emotive chillout groove piece so not some piece of aggressive dubsteppery or grindcore or whatever.
Thanks for coming back with congratulations my friend! Yeah I just did some quick selfies (doncha just hate that word) in the shirts, wasn't really trying for a showcase of the shirts or anything. I appreciate that you say I made the tracks loud and powerful. I guess the key was in thinking ahead to the mastering stage while mixing, to avoid fader creep and stuff... you know thinking "it might sound a bit on the quiet side now, but once it's mastered it will be potent." I actually was pretty conservative when it came to increasing gain in this one, just because of the style of song it was. I really appreciate your communication here, so thank you! Will be by to check out that piece you mentioned in a moment.
Yes, I’m familiar with Shatner and his work. No specific offence to him, but I’ve never heard anything from him as good as this track. It just has a special, unusual quality. Perhaps it’s the darker vibe and strange melodies.
If you have any other tracks like this, please direct me to them.
I’ll also check out some tracks of Shatner’s featuring you.
Very cool stuff. It's great if I can inspire music like this.
The synth that is keeping the pulse in the intro is a bit like a fast ticking clock.
That lead robotic machine malfunctioning synth is cool. Sometimes it doesn't sound like anyone is actually playing it but then I can hear that you're playing it from the keyboard. Very weird and brilliant sound with so much movement.
0:54 the start of that fast percussive melodic hammered instrument is excellent and so similar to a part in the first few minutes of a brilliant track by one of my favourite ever bands - Ozric Tentacles. You will also like them so check out this track to hear a similar instrument:
Ah, I've just worked out what that instrument is from reading the track description - a marimba!
2:09 stop of the drums is a really useful break. Things are interesting but that makes it more interesting.
2:26 the start of some great processing to that synth. Delay and distortion and maybe something else.
I guess this is a bit like my music. But there's much more keyboard lead than in my music. Probably because I'm mostly a guitarist and you're motly a keyboard player.
You have lots of other good melodic work from the bass going on in the background but the lead is the star here.
Excellent work and I'm sure you'll say it only took you a few hours. My stuff takes a lot, lot longer. But I also enjoy spending the time with it so I wouldn't want to make a track in one day.
hi and many thanks for such a nice comment on my music! I am really glad you liked this track.
The 'clock' sound is a sampled fragment from 'mallet-section-for-oriental-groove' from midisparks. I started with this to make some quasi-orchestral piece in the style of Steve Reich. Anyway here's my favourite piece of him - it's a 'minimal-music': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mETgHllnu2U
original song is much longer (over 15 min) but couldn't find the entire track available.
He wrote several compositions for the ensembles of percussive instruments like this.
Sometimes my keyboard playing really sucks for sure as I do not have enough time to practise and develop it at the moment. Here's just some of my weird lines quantized (1/16 and 1/32 time).
I used the mono-synth (MinimoogueVA plugin). If you hold one note and run some other fast notes at the same time the result would be quite interesting.
Its just a compilation of only a few of some of my nice licks and for the most part my malfunctioning patterns:) I'm using a lot of EQ that could change the original sound and make it a synth-sound or simply fit the bassline. Im also often layering the same midi pattern many times with many of my 'presets'-variations of the same instrument just to enhance some interesting phrase.
I really like 'Ozric Tentacles - Wreltch'. It is definitely my kind of music. I just listened to this song but will also take a time for a whole album cause its just sounds far-out and totally absorbing.
Marimba sounds are from 'Edirol Orchestral' plugin. some xylophone sounds used as well.
I combined the 5/8 patterns into 4/4 drum groove (ezdrummer and some loops) - at times it will sound like breaking the beat. That's why I am able to make the song with quite interesting variations in a relatively short time.
I really like the 'Majken Chimera' plugin - it's great for pads, with EQing it has almost endless possibilities... I use delay sometimes but I think it's just my daw here (Studio One2) pushing to its limits. I'm always finding some weird additional stuff on the final mixdown like this... But anyway its quite psyhodelic effect in a sense though:)
I tried to get as I possibly can from your recordings where the bassline is always predominant and designed to drive the track giving so much upper harmonic possibilities.
This track took me about 2,5 hours. But I can't spend more time working on tracks regarding to my lifestyle. I am not really a proffesional musician at the moment, just making some music from time to time and spending more of a time rather listening or commenting songs on looperman. But still plannig to develop my keyboard playing and some production skills as well such a mastering or post-production which really sucks for now.
Again thanks so much for your nice comments and your music that inspired me on tracks like this!
Alex
I think is really good and some classy shit. I like the intro, partly because it doesn't sound like hip hop. Pitched up vocal is cool and then a killer gentle beat arrives.
And a good vocal. The melodic elements sit really well and I also like your kick.
Reminds me a bit of Eminem but then it goes into something quite different on 0:48 that is haunting and reminds me a little of something like metal eg some System Of A Down vocals.
It's an excellent change that sort of works a little like a chorus. Great choir vocal and that haunting melody in the vocal meshes perfectly with it.
Nice beatless ending to conclude things.
I'd usually suggest a short track like this should be longer but this seems just fine.
thank you for the review, I really appreciate it!! I have been on looperman since 09 I believe, numerous colabs as well, check out shatner on here I have done some work with him in which is totally different than this project!
Yes, do try adding some acoustic g to this track. It could do with more sounds in it. As you seem to be good at remembering your bass parts and replaying them (your left-right double tracking thing) why not try (perhaps in general) doing the same with guitar parts?
Could use acoustic just in short bursts to emphasise some of the best little riffs and fills. Maybe you’ll record the whole phrase but then edit the parts so that the acoustic only appears at certain times. Could just be a volume fade up to make it appear in the track. And then down to leave us with your favourite lead instrument.
At some point, in some track, you should also do some acoustic g playing and then add plugin distortion in Studio One to get some good sort of acoustic rocking going. Or just use the Squier you don’t much like.
Just a few little ideas but I won’t charge you $85 for them. I’m reasonable so $40 will do.
“Reckful has a fitting name with your awesome and seemingly well planned "Drumatization".”
Yes, it’s a title I’ve had for quite a while. It means the opposite of reckless, which describes me as I’m quite cautious and also a massive procrastinator. Not impulsive or hot-headed at all. So, I guess that represents my care and attention to detail in pretty much all my tracks.
Yet, Reckful sounds like ‘wreck’, so smashing something up. There’s some pretty heavy, powerful stuff in the track that’s combined with lots of care and caution so Reckful it is.
I considered giving it the title of your fine This Mean Motor Scooter phrase but I thought it had too many chillout and beautiful, funky sections to suit that phrase. I guess I’m saving This Mean Motor Scooter for a really uptempo, chugging beast. The Bigger The Fatter The Better is just that but already has a superior title so need to change it.
"I’m quite cautious and also a massive procrastinator"
I would use this same line to describe myself.
However, I have a rather Vulcan approach to life in regards to logic. I do get upset when someone is being irrational or illogical. I don't have "card night" at my place anymore because a friend had an intoxicated meltdown at my house and got verbally hostile towards my wife. She mis-dealt a hand of Spades, and got "Get it fuckin right this time!" I don't like drunk people anyway. They promptly called a cab and have not been back in about four years.
" I’m reasonable so $40 will do."
Don't give it away for so cheap. Have some self respect.

I think your words in honor.
thank you so much

Hope you are well.
Actually the vocals that you noticed is the sound of a totally demolished guitar.
Yes, it was pretty fun to make. Quite far from what kind of genre i use to do.
In next song I will be using my latest acquisition, superior drummer from toontrack. :)
on Do you hear the sounds - featuring Farisha by clindsay
Congrats again on your interesting track.

Well done on a really well made track.
Alex

Congrats.
I'll work on the ending - and lobby for 'ambient acapella' as a new genre.
Thanks again - regards,

I'm not quite sure which your guitar parts are in this one but I'm guessing it's some of the higher, funkier ones, eg starting on 0:43.
I also really like the tight rock chords starting 0:37. All that playing blends perfectly with the beat, bass, lead synth and funk guitar.
1:12 cool funk guitar bendy fill!
More detail from me another time if I remember.
This track is guaranteed to get loads of comments as it features Danke. It's also really good!
The 1st part was the bass that Dank had in place already, the part that
I played started at 1:26 to 2:02 just that section is where I played the Bass...
Funny thing is, he didn't have a bass in that section, so I put it in...It worked...

Cheers!

Easily the best track I've heard from you.

Huh!

I guess it's sort of got a tiny bit of a groove but I can't really tell if this is a serious track.
If so, it needs some more musical elements. At least the bass is throbbing away. But the percussion is way too straight and machine-like.
If you're just starting out making music, it's not a bad effort.

Good work.

Well done.

I like that tone at 0:09. Far out sound.

Thanks for the help!!

Thank you very much for your kind words I will bear your points in mind.
The shortness of the track I thought to keep it short and sweet to keep the element of boredom out of it.
However I do agree with you about the base, I started it initially then I add the melody to it.
Thanks again

Ozric Tentacles - Wreltch

The 'clock' sound is a sampled fragment from 'mallet-section-for-oriental-groove' from midisparks. I started with this to make some quasi-orchestral piece in the style of Steve Reich. Anyway here's my favourite piece of him - it's a 'minimal-music':
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mETgHllnu2U
original song is much longer (over 15 min) but couldn't find the entire track available.

Congratulations and it's a favourite for me.

Take care of thyself
I would use this same line to describe myself.
However, I have a rather Vulcan approach to life in regards to logic. I do get upset when someone is being irrational or illogical. I don't have "card night" at my place anymore because a friend had an intoxicated meltdown at my house and got verbally hostile towards my wife. She mis-dealt a hand of Spades, and got "Get it fuckin right this time!" I don't like drunk people anyway. They promptly called a cab and have not been back in about four years.
" I’m reasonable so $40 will do."
Don't give it away for so cheap. Have some self respect.
