I don't consider this one weird at all. I've heard weird from you before :) This one is more tranquil until BAM!! LEAD TIME!! Time to change my britches! Haha As always, nice work, but that lead could stand a cut in db.

I know what you mean about the lead but .... I want to keep it like it is because it's a violent electrical spark that fits for me my idea of what's going on having observed a couple of people who have almost lost it now. I might mght might tone it down a little. Thanks for calling Supa.

Yo Great Keeper of the Proverbial Nomenclature!

"If something sounds weird, it is probably bowed cello." Well, that narrows it down. :D

While listening and thinking of things that might help improve this, my initial thought first time through was to slowly fade out the vinyl crackle and let the music breathe. Then, the vinyl crackle was gone...never to return. So, you beat me to the punch.

@2:43 Nice Clyde Stubblefield style drum break and the build that follows.

@4:00 Starting to boot-scoot now. It's like a tripped out Devil Went Down To Georgia through here.

@5:36 Uh oh, very minute audio click. Noticed mostly when just listening and not going back to listen for it. May be an attack setting on the ride?

@6:24 Electronic stoner/doom commences. I can pretty much just put this section to the end on loop and be happy.

Yo.

Very sorry about the very slow reply. Most unlike me.

"Well, that narrows it down"

Well, so many of the weird sounds are cello but not all so I thought I should mention that. I'm not going to go through and give a time reference for each and every one that either is or isn't.

"my initial thought first time through was to slowly fade out the vinyl crackle"

The vinyl crackle ends because it was simply part of one drum loop that stops. It wasn't something I'd intentionally added and then removed.

"Nice Clyde Stubblefield style drum break"

Yes, I agree now that you point it out.

"4:00 Starting to boot-scoot now"

A boot-scoot indeed, which is a funny term. I like fast swing jazz drums.

"5:36 Uh oh, very minute audio click"

Extremely minute. Perhaps I'll just check exactly what's going on as the drums and bass return.

"6:24 Electronic stoner/doom commences"

I agree though I hadn't thought about it being doom. I just found it slow and dark though normally when I feel I'm in doom mode I get the guitar out and dial up some badass riffage. But I never attempted that here, instead preferring to get the cello to do as much as possible. Without distortion.

"I can pretty much just put this section to the end on loop and be happy."

I'm happy if I can make someone else happy.

Thanks again.

I always enjoy the minimalistic sounds you craft up.

Love the wub wubby bass line and how the arpeggiated beeps start off tight but then have moments where they just fall apart and then reigned back in.

I'm guessing that is the talking toy introducing himself at 2:58? :)

Everytime I hear a clank in one of your tunes, I picture you emptying out the kitchen cabinets and loading up the pots and pans into a DIY sampler made of old airplane parts .

As usual, great song. I get the feeling you spend a lot of time in those psychotropic environments!

Hey, thanks for stopping by to listen and comment! I enjoyed inducing the subtle time shifts in that arpeggio part, I think it added to the psychedelia a bit. The VC3T did not show up in this one at all, as it was just a DAW based composition. I did use some samples of my gear, but the digital sounding voice was just something I found at some point. Ha ha! I wish I could take apart an airplane... though some of my recent vintage acquisitions from Ukraine and Russia could have been bound for something like that originally, who knows?! I do admittedly split my time pretty evenly between this world and the unseen, although it's not like it used to be. Since the big DEA action in 2001, I have not had real LSD. I just do what I can, with what I have, when I can. Virola bark from at least twelve years ago has been an almost constant ally in the past year. Maybe that is why people are scared of my when I am just sitting there, and why they think I'm crazy when they've never met me. Well, I've got to go finish setting up my lab and "studio B" finally, but I'll stop by your profile first. Thanks again for the comment!

First, just tell me what you used and some GOOD hints. haha.
I don't want my nying nying to sound just like your nying nying....caveman style here. As I butcher it, it will hit you up if it goes way off course. You can just email if you want. The nying nying is obviously top secret commando shit!

And just to add to what I just posted...

When I say microphone, the same goes for anything being directly inputted to your interface/soundcard. Mic, synth, bass whatever.

The volume difference you are hearing is your soundcard bringing down the levels of everything not being recorded/inputted at that time.

Again, it has no effect on levels within the DAW itself...so your mixes are just LOUD \m/ .. \m/

&^%$@%^!%@$^@&!^@%$!*@(*&^ YES!!!

NASTY, NASTY, NASTY!!!!!!

Congrats on being the first person in history to ever say their mix is too loud. HAHA

The direct monitoring switch basically controls recordings going through a microphone. It bypasses the whole computer latency through the daw and plugins and such. In a nutshell, it picks up exactly was is being inputed without any computer involvement. It is useful when multitracking at the same time (for example a full band) without having to worry about a bunch of latency problems. Any vst fx will not be in effect while tracking. The direct monitoring is only in effect during recording, so any playback and post mixing is not effected. If I am totally wrong, hopefully I will be corrected. But yeah, nasty track!

Fuckin' A.. There's a shit ton going on here, I had to sacrifice some things for a more pleasant sounding track.. Then I thought fuck that! This needs to be heavy... Added an extra sub track around 15hz!! I know, I know but fuck human hearing XD..

That sounds reasonable although I'm confused as to why it would affect the headphone volume output? Fuck it, I'll read the manual.

I can't stop listening to this. If you check my influences, you'll see that you and I may be cut from the same 2x4. Downloaded, gonna add bass and vibraslap, it's my birthday so I consider it a gift...don't worry, I won't post it. I'll just send you what I came up with and leave it up to you.

I'm late in my replies to these comments, sorry guys, but SupaFreakshow did in fact lay down some pretty sick bass to this track. I have requested he send me a clean .wav of the bass so I can possibly do some editing with it. I will re-post when complete for you all to hear.

This started out like Willie Nelson, broke into some Earth, then went into unchartered heavy rock goodness. The time signature, or signatures, keep me paying close attention. Listening on a shyte laptop, so not noticing any bass. If there is none, I'd be happy to offer up some Geezer Butler-ness.
Neomorpheus
Neomorpheus replied 13th Jul 2016 - 9 years ago
Willie Nelson, c'mon bro! Haha !
The time signatures I believe are a mixture of 3/4 or 6/8 (hemiola which is widely used in latin music) and in some places reverts to a straight 4/4. There is bass but may be hard for you to make out on the ol laptop speakers. Plug in some head phones or ear buds ese for the best stereophonic experience. But I would happy to hear some Geeze as well !

on Billion - When Im Gone by BillionaireExclusive
First off, I like your message, vibe and what you are trying to accomplish. Not your typical rap tune here, as well as the last tune you posted. Since I am assuming this is in it's early stages...the piano fade in after the "heart beat" intro is a little awkward. I feel it doesn't need to fade in at all...just come right in...don't beat around the bush. As for the vocals, you don't need all those wishy washing effects. A solid, almost dry vocal will go a long way here. I feel you may be a little gun shy about hearing your own voice. Don't be, it's pretty good. Let it be heard and understood.

I think I might have to pick your brain in the future via messages. I don't want to hi jack your tune's comments with a bunch of technical inquiries, but you've definitely got me thinking... and that is probably more of a fire hazard than my soldering skills. Big hat's off to you and you're DIYness. Seriously. Now where is my Speak-n-Spell
Spivkurl
Spivkurl replied 28th Jul 2016 - 9 years ago
Thank you for the continued correspondence about "circuit bending." I'm interested to hear if you have experimented at all, or alternately if you have started any fires... ha ha. Speak and spell is definitely a pretty good candidate, and I've worked with the speak & * series a bit myself. Got to go visit with my dad now, but I will try to return the favor of the comment soon!

I love the fact that you take old toys and turn them into a piece of gear. I can't tell you how many times I've heard one of my kid's toys and thought "I wish that had an output jack". With my lack of electronic know how, I'd probably burn the house down if I tried to rig it up myself.
Spivkurl
Spivkurl replied 9th Jul 2016 - 9 years ago
That is generally a very easy task, as long as you have a half decent soldering iron, a jack, and some bits of wire. Of course to put it on the case, you need something to make a hole. Usually my first step in a bend or mod of a toy, so it can be recorded in decent quality. Don't burn down the house! (unless you mean in the Talking Heads way!)

WHAAATTT TTHHHEEEEE!! I was right!! Patch cables everywhere like Devo! I like the crusty old SH-1 in the middle of it all with cables just laying on it and in the way. I feel like the oscilloscope is sitting there worrying about what you are going to run through him next. Wait, is that a toy echo mic? Please tell me you use that for reverb! The pic gets better and better the more you look at it. Awesome.
Spivkurl
Spivkurl replied 9th Jul 2016 - 9 years ago
Ha ha, another entertaining comment from you! Yeah, that picture doesn't show the patch bay and other rack gear, or any of my MIDI stuff... so it's really just a "tip of the iceberg" photo. It also does not include my electronic lab which is moving locations presently. I assume you mean the Casio SK-1 (and not SH-1)... that was one of the more recent circuit bending/modification projects I did, and it has my first successful matrix patch bay. Fun stuff, I love casio gear of all kinds! The oscilloscope was recently brought into my studio, and has been sitting in the original box in the basement for years now. Sometimes it's fun to have visual feedback, and it helps when I calibrate various items. Yep, that's an echo mic... and while I have not used it much in recordings, I find that having various vintage toys around is very inspiring. I have some plans to turn it into a spring reverb/echo chamber project once I get the lab set up again. Back to working on painting my second studio and lab, so once that is set up I'll take pictures up there as well. Thanks for the reply comment!

Damn! You just described me from a few years back! LMAO! EyeHateGod? I am a big Jimmy Bower fan. He is so unorthodox. My old band opened for them a while back, as well as Superjoint Ritual (Jimmy Bower and Phil Anselmo were both in that one). You're out there in Electric Wizard land right? You should check out Sourvein from this side of the pond. Liz Buckingham (the chic in EW) used to be the guitarist, was dating T-Roy (the singer) and left him to be with Mr. Wizard (can't think of his name). Poor Troy, felt bad for him!

Enough of that...I'll go back to that tune and get the stems to a usable state. I'll see what else I have in the archive. When you get around to it, we'll just call it a collab or whatever.

If you need any guitar work for whatever else you're working on, let me know. It would be nice not to have to worry about everything else in a song for a change.

Just message me here, or I'll message you when went shit's ready.

Later.

You opened for Superjoint!!!!! I cannot convey my jealousy in words... Have a few grawlix instead *@!!!!!!@$*((*!!!

I'm yet to check Electric Wizard, many of my friends are into them but I have a strange ritual where listening to bands I've not heard before.. I'll be sure to check them out.

Guitar work! Yes! I have a lot of ideas about guitars and heavy DnB but everytime I record I can't get the sounds equal in intensity, my guitars always fail me, despite having a Dean Dlimebolt, with Seymour Duncan's and a decent recording facility.. I think a better amp and a DI box are in order.. Line 6 sucks for recording, but I'm poor :(

Send it over dude, I'll twist up whatever you've got \m/

Wow! That was uniquely bonkers! Very, very cool. I am picturing wires and patch cables everywhere. Saw you mention a VC3T...what is that exactly? It wasn't made by EMS was it?
Spivkurl
Spivkurl replied 8th Jul 2016 - 9 years ago
Hey there, thanks for the listen and the cool comment! What you are picturing is a pretty common sight in my studios, as you can see from this picture taken earlier in the year....

http://www.wearerecords.com/assets/DIYSetup_2-2-2016.jpg

The VC3T is in the modular synth cabinet, top row, second from the right... The one with the label, and the green and yellow buttons at the top. Definitely not made by EMS, ha ha. It began life as a Coleco Talking Teacher toy, made around 1986. I built some support circuitry, and made a panel for various input/output and some controls, and it was incorporated into the modular setup. Has some different modes, one where it talks, and one with just a synth tone. It can be voltage controlled for pitch and amplitude modulation. Gates or trigger signals can trigger words, or hold portions of words. Not entirely predictable at times, but loads of fun, especially when sampled or controlled with a MIDI-CV/Gate converter.

But, as you see, the wires and patch cables are there! This is only a small section of the studio really. I went through over 150 ft of shielded audio cable making the connections from the patch bay to most of my instruments in this room and the one next to it.

Thanks much for taking the time to listen! Have a good day!

Yeah, metal is in a weird place nowadays. NIN and Static X seemed to start the blend of electronic and metal, but then rap metal took over and led us to whatever it is we have now. Some of it's okay, but mostly very overproduced. I listen to mostly doom/sludge when it comes to metal lately, but I'd like to hear some Meshuggah with dnb pushing it. Here's a link to a metal tune I did. Very Slayer-ish. I really don't have any plans for it, the mix is a bit trashy, but if you like it and want to do something with it, I'd clean it up and drop the drums or whatever and send it to you. It's the only metal on this page (been trying new stuff) but an older page of mine is mostly metal.

Everything I hear just feels like trite, dude with tattoos and long hair plays guitar with bearded band mates, rinse & repeat.. Bringing nothing new to the genre, I'm hoping to be proven wrong, I don't hold out much hope... I do favour doom & Sludge as well.. Eyehategod in particular at the moment... Listening to yours now.. Very Slayer, I would love to get the stems for it but I probably wouldn't get to work on anything for quite some time, I have a huge back log of projects & ideas to finish.. But who knows they might inspire something awesome.. Sent you a follow too :)

Hey man, you can be proud of this. Great job. Since you asked for constructive feedback, I feel that some of the low mids in the main vocal could use some cutting at times to make more room for the bass line..but that's just me and it could be these cheapo cans I am listening on.

Thanks man. The bass line actually follow the chord progressions so it really just blends in with the whole beat. I spent a bulk of time trying to work on my voice, and T-Law's verse was actually last minute recorded. So your speakers are fine the song just came together like this because of time restraints. But thank you and look forward to more from Billion soon.
