I can always expect to hear something potent when clicking on one of your tracks, and this one does not disappoint! Very cool swing to the rhythm/bass. Definitely got me going this morning! Thanks for sharing it! Fave!

"A-Buzz A-Buzz A-Buzzing like them killer bees"... had to get back to you regarding that. It's from The Cure, their song "The 13th"... http://www.songlyrics.com/the-cure/the-13th-lyrics/ Very cool song. I love 90s music still after all this time, and The Cure's album "Wild Mood Swings" is so under-rated. All their albums are original, but I've never heard anything like that one. 1996 was such a strange year for music, everyone was high on acid and having an evolution moment, then things went to shit in pop culture. Can't say why your mix made me think of those lyrics, as I totally didn't listen to your style of music back then. Probably should have though. Listening to your mix again as I type, and its really groovy! Hope you are well today!

The Cure were one of my favourite bands when i was at school so i'm familiar with the song. I think "kiss me kiss me kiss me" was my favourite album but there's so many to choose from it's hard to pick a winner. 1996 was a pretty crazy year for me. Far too many drugs and nightclubs (was a good time thinking about it) As for being well, i'm ok if not a little fed up with being signed off work (been six months now and it gets pretty boring sometimes)
But you're right. I have no idea why this made you think of the cure as it doesn't bare any resemblence that i can pick out lol.
Glad you could drop by and blast this one as i was pretty pleased with how it turned out.
Cheers.

Hey buddy, just thought I'd look out at my competition for the top spots in the techno genre, and here you are. I knew very little about techno when you made this song, and hearing it now, you deserve the top spot! "looking for you, hope I find you soon... if I only knew, what happened to you..." the lyrics of my latest techno came to mind when hearing this and wondering where you've been since you logged in last. Hope you are well! Fav'd!

Hey old friend, really good to hear something new from you on here! Very enjoyable dubby-glitch with your underground edge! Loved the Fx sampling very much, sounded great even from the other room. Nice mix and master, potent yet chill and easy to control on the user side. Perfect for my usual saturday antics. A good track to take a break from mixing and listen to, which is one of my favorite kinds of electronic tracks. Okay I've got to listen again up close. I seem to hear a parallel with the short bus competition perc effects, maybe it's just I've been listening to them a lot today. You've got a nice hip hop groove going on in this one, well done! The bass is so well blended! Great analog hiss going on too, sounds like a 45 from the 60's or a 33 from the 50's me thinks. Deep and groovy! Definitely a fave!

Hey buddy! Really cool modernised game style music here! Always loved tetris when I was a gamer, and you've taken the soundtrack to a higher level here! Makes me curious if you started of with a MIDI file of the this tetris theme, or if you started from scratch. Either way, it's really fun to hear! Dig it! Fave!

Thanks for the kind words! Tbh, I didn't really get into tetris. I loved the theme though so I decided to mix it.

I started it from scratch.

on Proximal Vicinity Short Bus Mixing Comp by fixxxer
Hey man, I'm enjoying listening to this one! As far as the mixing goes, I think you did a really nice job, with an emphasis on the cinematic nature of the original. I did however have to turn my system up quite a bit to hear all elements properly, thus I think it could be mastered a little more powerfully. You have a lot of headroom, which I suppose would be good for a film (hence cinematic), but if I were doing a song for a film I would use the headroom more fully and allow whoever is arranging the soundtrack to lower it based on what else was going on in the film. I guess my preference is generally to be able to listen at a normal volume on my system and hear everything clearly, while still having the option to turn it up when I want it loud. The above is just personal opinion, and should be taken as such. I feel like you did excellent work blending the elements!

This is pretty nice to my ears! The prominence of the effects is a nice touch. Also you achieved a good potent bass tone. Definitely different from the two earlier mixes I've listened to so far. It felt like the timing got cluttered in the middle, but it slowly resolved and became quite groovy. Overall, a nicely balanced mix which is enjoyable to hear!

I'm enjoying your take on this track very much! It's nice to listen to this before I start working on my mix effort. Has some really good panning going on, and overall the mix is nice and clear. Timing seems good too. The electric guitar has a nice tone, haven't heard the stem for it yet, but I'm assuming you improved upon it. Good work!

thanks mate I appreciate your kind words, I'm looking forward to hearing all the other versions. As for the guitar its only eq and compression and for the last section I doubled it up and panned it L and R a little to make space for the strings and woodwinds.

Thanks again

Very enjoyable listen! Creative style to your sounds, and that's something I value deeply in an electronic track. The "breaking news" sample was cool too! I've always gotten into drumstep styles more than dubstep. You've done the genre justice, but taken it further by inserting your personality. Cool song! Faved!

Hey thanks Spiv my man! Yeah drumstep is really cool and I actually like it over dubstep myself. Really appreciate the comments and the compliment on the creativity.I was kind of reluctant to post it because I didn't think most people could vibe to this. But it was something different I was experimenting with and I guess it turnred out okay. Thanks for the fav bro!

on AZZYKO - FEEL THE BEAT by AZZYKO
Hey, yeah this is pretty cool! I've been slowly getting away from listening to dubstep, but I can still appreciate the style. I guess it's hard for me to enjoy dubstep because everyone seems to use the same sounds all the time. I like hearing sounds which express someone's personality, and I find it hard to believe that every dubstep fan has the same personality. Anyway, I can tell you've been improving and that can't be bad. People have already mentioned the heavy limiting, so I won't beat it to death. Nice work.

Hi SK

Very many thanks for the kind words. Really great to have your view on the track and thanks for taking the time to post comments. I have to say I'm pretty pleased with the way it came out and excellent you picked up on the space in the mix. I really wanted an "empty" kind of atmosphere (if you check out the original it's very much transparent!).

Thanks again.

Groovy pumpin mix you've done here! That "you call that fckin nasty" sample I've totally heard that somewhere before... cna't put my finger on it though... something I've listened to a lot. Very uplifting progression throughout, I dig it! Nice quality sound, and the stereo field is pretty cool too! Was a good ten minutes, and now I'm ready to do some cleaning. Fave!

on That Magical Place by StaticNomad
Just wanted to take another listen to this and follow up briefly. The monarch butterfly is exactly what I was referring to regarding the "decorations," not so much the human who rules based on heredity...heh. I must say that this track is even better the second time! While you say that you do not technically know music, the things which you listed that you do excel in are even more important to my ears than simple theory or whatever. On top of that, I'm definitely learning the value of those "incremental improvements" which you speak of. Even just setting aside a track for a moment and going back with fresh ears can show an artist what simple changes could take a song to a higher level. I always appreciate your well thought out comments and replies, it's good to have around the loop!

"I must say that this track is even better the second time"

I try to make deep stuff that you can come back to and find many, many things of interest you didn't hear/notice first time round. I honestly have trouble remembering all the sections in tracks that I made a while ago.
"the things which you listed that you do excel in are even more important to my ears than simple theory or whatever"

I agree. I'm not at all a proper musician as I'm not trained in it, can't read music and have fairly terrible pitch and can't sing. Always really struggled to work out how to play riffs by listening. I haven't tried to do that in years (since aged about 16). Just as well I couldn't care less about playing cover songs.

I sometimes wonder if many of the millions (?) of people I seem to hear knocking out dull, soulless, lifeless ripoff electronic dance music are people who are quite good technically (ie with software, computer repair, hooking up gear etc) but have very little creativity or imagination and are only really interested in making stuff that sounds just like the limited few genres they're into.

So, I'm imaginative and can just about get my software to work and tune my guitars (slowly) but feel I know a lot about groove and how to balance a track with different sounds and instruments.

"simple changes could take a song to a higher level"

I'm always fascinated with how good I can possibly make something (and spending ages trying is partly why I do such long tracks). I've done loads of sessions where I've added no new riffs or sections, just tweaked loads and loads of things (track levels, delay times etc)that are difficult to remember. But the end result has been so much better!

I shall go back and make some changes to this magical place as I'm sure I can improve a few things.

Thanks for your thoughts and I'm glad you appreciate my reviews and track replies. Clearly I put a fair bit of effort into them though I won't be doing it forever...

on That Magical Place by StaticNomad
Hey man, hope you are well! This is a really cool track you've made! I find myself especially liking the parts which give the impression of being "decorations," like they flutter in for a moment and are gone... a bit like a monarch or something. Really good rhythms throughout as well! The arrangement seemed to build in intensity and complexity as it went on, and I like that too. Can always hear the fact that you know about music and recording in tracks, and I look up to you for that. Fine work! Faved!
StaticNomad
StaticNomad replied 14th Aug 2014 - 11 years ago
Greetings, Mr Kurl.

I agree about the "decorations" point. While I'm very much into the whole engine room/foundation of a track (ie bass and drums, groove etc) I love adding fun intricacies on top.

Having things flutter in and out keeps things pretty damn interesting. Your monarch analogy is odd but I think it makes sense. Maybe also like monarch butterflies. I guess they flutter in and out.

You know I almost always build tracks up in intensity as I always feel I have to take things somewhere to justify the track going on and on. Can't just have it sitting at the same level though I guess that is the best thing for chilling (but can also be like wallpaper).

Thanks for the respect - it's mutual.

I don't actually know that much about the technicalities of recording but I do know a lot of music and am good at hearing a good or not so good groove and understanding relationships between instruments and where I can slot inbetween another to get them all to lock together in interesting ways.

I'm more creative and experimental than clinically knowledgeable about how to make music. And I'm good at listening thousands of times and making many, many incremental improvements.

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts. More banging tracks coming soon.

Well, this isn't what I expected when visiting your page! Happily surprised though! It is quite a pleasing song. The guitar solo sounds cool! Would have to agree with RenzWilde about the rhythm guitar though... I'm assuming this is a loop, otherwise you probably would have had some variation in the part. Understandable for sure. Maybe I'm wrong about this though? Anyway, very cool pop rock song, you should be proud!

on Want To-featuring Bunnie Rabbit by dansjoy4
Hey this is pretty cool! I do enjoy the trap style, and have been forming my own offshoot of the genre, so I appreciate when someone does something different with it. People were telling you to tune the vocals to the music, which I think is a bad idea... I'd recommend tuning the music to the vocals, since they are already recorded. You'd have a more natural feeling overall this way. Just a thought. Any way, I really enjoyed the song. One thing I noticed is that there seems to be some clipping going on, which is especially noticeable around 2:16. Seems to continue after that point too. Might want to check the mix/master/mp3 conversion as it could have been induced at any of those points. Just trying to help. Cool style, I dig it! Fave!

on How You Love Me - Hardstyle Remix - by Apieceoftofu
Pretty sweet remix you've done here! I can't judge it too much, as I've never been able to make an actually good hardstyle track, though I enjoy listening to the style. This is different from what I'm used to hearing, as it doesn't have the prominent kick beat which I've come to love about hardcore. Love the dirty bass parts though! Vocals aren't my cup of tea, but I realize they were kind of the foundation for the remix. They do go well with the music you've created though! Nice sounding mix and master too. Good work!
Apieceoftofu
Apieceoftofu replied 12th Aug 2014 - 11 years ago
Thanks for the comment. I swear, modern hardstyle has to be one of, if not THE most difficult genres to produce well. It's so frequency dense with the huge leads and massive, highly distorted kicks. Going back to producing a simpler genre like Deep House has felt like a breeze after trying my hand at hardstyle. The upload to Looperman deteriorated the mix quality slightly, the kick is a little better on my raw WAV file but i'll be the first to admit it isn't perfect.

Thanks again for the listen!

I like this much, and I can definitely feel the vibe of the picture you linked to! The different instruments has some cool dynamics to them. I did notice around 2:25 or so, there was some distortion somewhere in there... don't think it was my system any way. Doesn't seem like it's in the last step, but somewhere earlier in the signal chain. Correct me if I'm wrong... :) I enjoyed listening thoroughly though! Fave!

Hey, pretty cool electro track here. I know I've heard this vocal sample elsewhere, but you used it well. MYXD has a point about the mastering, but on the other hand I know that is kind of the style for electro. Mainly you should check in a sound editor for point of clipping, if there aren't any then it will probably be okay. Fun to hear! Keep it up!

I hope you'll find time and the mood to record some vocals. If so then let me know about it (whenever that may be) because I would love to hear it.

I'm off now checking your sound library and see if I can come up with something....
