This is a really lovely track. Very warm and heartfelt. Many thanks as well for detailing your production process to really make this track sound clean.
Love the flow brought on by the wubby synth. It's a constant rhythm that works well for this type of track.
Though think if the track evolved more as it went along, that'd help it keep its energy. If not by changing the rhythm, then maybe the texture of the synth during a chorus for example.
You might enjoy listening to Prophet. "Codebreaker (Prod. Siskiyou & Prophet)" is a great song.
Such a great vibe with this track. Lots of little intricacies with every instrument. And it progress to each new unique idea pretty much seamlessly. It's also got so much atmosphere which is a highlight for me. Especially at 1:45 and 2:27.
This is a really cool track. Lots of interesting sounds and atmosphere. I also love the progression of this track. 3:12 onwards has to be my favorite part. That bass synth is something else and I love when it opens up from there into space.
Mixing wise it feels lacking in energy. Maybe some tighter sidechain on the kick and snare could help. Some brightness on the lead synths could help open it up too, so maybe some white noise and some upper harmonics?
A solid saw bass layered underneath that high plucky bass could help a lot to add some body to the low end around parts like 1:31.
Of course this all depends on what you're going for for the overall sound.
See "Daft Punk - Doin it right (k?d remix)" for my preference, though I don't think this track needs to be as extreme as it feels more like a vibe than a banger.
This is really unexpected. You'd never really hear anything like this in mainstream today and that's part of what makes it so cool. Initially I thought the vocals sounded weird, but it grew on my very quickly. The vocals compliment the dark atmosphere very well. Production is also excellent. You've created a great vibe with this song. Great work!
This is really cool. I feel like you nailed that retro feeling with the melodies, the synths you used, as well as the way vocals are sang with the effects on top of them too.
This is merely a preference, but if you want to make it more refined, I would add just a tad of sidechain compression to make the kick drum pop out some more. Awesome work!
Thanks, Sheen. In theory, I know how to do side chain compression, but for some reason I'm a bit hesitant to add it to my projects. I think it's just because I don't have enough practice doing it to feel comfortable setting it up. But, I like your suggestion, so I'm going to try it on a copy of the project. Typically, I think, you'd apply compression to say a bass or synth track that competes with the BD track, right? Not to all the tracks except the BD? I will need to listen to the project to see what makes sense. I was taught that I could set up a BD track with just the hits that are meant to "duck" other tracks via side chain compression, but don't route that BD track to any output, so it doesn't actually sound in the mix. Not sure if that will be necessary. Good suggestion. I' going to give it a try.
Wow this is really good. I especially love how it built up, but when the drop came instead of something crazy and flashy, it was simple and understated. It really stood out to me and made it memorable. It's also mixed very well. I can definitely imagine this in a futuristic video game or a movie. Amazing work!
I think you did a great job remixing this song. Though both are good, I found the drums more enjoyable in this one, and the mixing and mastering sound more precise (arp synths spaced out nicely for example) and powerful (the drums feel like they have more power behind them). Excellent work.
Hello Sheen, thank you for the nice and gentle comment. Sounds like i have done it not the badest way. Really good to know that you found time to listen to both tracks and sure good to know that you could hear what i had done.
Honestly @Silverman described it best. It's almost jazz, but isn't... almost rock, but isn't... Madness is great word to describe it.
I usually gravitate to songs that you can't really pin down, and this is one of them. It's incredibly well mixed with tons of interesting sounds. Absolutely love the break at 7:24 with the glitchy sounds and crazy drums.
Like you I also feel like there could be more to the intro. Something to preview the madness that follows. I would start with high energy drum fills coupled with a lead doing a crazy solo, then it tapers off into near silence then the Cello bassline and drums start. Very Jazz inspired. Kind of like the end of Cowboy Bebop's intro song, but instead of resolving, it creates tension for the rest of the song.
I'm still not hearing the jazz in this. It's not swinging and there are no jazz-related instruments. Perhaps it's just that initial cello bassline that is reminiscent of jazzy double bass. There definitely is rock coming from the drums. And perhaps some of the distorted cello parts.
"I usually gravitate to songs that you can't really pin down, and this is one of them."
I'm kind of the same. Thanks.
"tons of interesting sounds"
That's what I go for in most of my tracks. I just have to be acareful not to add too many. Adding lots means the mix is harder but that's part of the fun - trying to get all this disparate stuff to sit nicely together.
"Absolutely love the break at 7:24"
Yeah, that's my dubstep madness. The track has a limiter applied to the output mixer al the time except for a few sections. When taken off, things get more aggressive. So it's off for this section.
"Like you I also feel like there could be more to the intro"
Yes and I must go back and try to come up with one. I was lazy and never really seriously attempted anything. I had some ideas along the lines of yours. I do need something that is a preview of the crazy stuff that follows. Maybe a massive, heavily effected drum fill or something that fades out, with its delay lines trailing. And then the cello bass and hip hop drums start. I just need to experiment with that idea and see what emerges.
Hat that came in at 0:36 I found was a little loud. Yup. That's all the criticism I have for such an outstanding track. I love the motifs with the plucks, and the whole song has this whimsical feel to it that I imagine would fit well with a fantasy RPG or something. Keep up the good work!
This is really cool. Digging it all the way through, especially since I don't hear a lot of music like this. I love how there are a ton of elements that play off each other. It's constantly evolving and even though it's over 5 minutes I never once got bored. Excellent work!
Thank you for listening Sheen.
I love to put a lot of sounds in more or less every creation but without compacting the whole thing into a slew of mud.
Mostly this is down to the mixing with some very fine differences in volume and panning.
I'm trying at the moment to work on a fairly simple Tangerine Dream kind of sound at the moment.
Sweeping synths no percussion.
It's proving harder than I thought.
Awesome work re purposing the chimes I made. You managed to change things up so it doesn't sound exactly like the sample and made it work well with the rest of the track.
Lots of lovely different elements throughout, and the drums were unexpected but very welcome.
The song sounds really good. I love the funky vibe and the electric guitar that comes in later adds even more tension to an incredibly tense track.
I didn't necessarily get the vibe of a war either. @Joecramer's comment "-on the way to steal all the gold of fort knox- feeling" seems so perfect for this. I could imagine this song telling the tale of an epic heist.
Awesome track. The instrumentals are cool, but I think the percussion is what really stands out for me. They sound very nuanced with little details thrown in here and there which sounds really awesome. I also really like the chilled vibe.
Wow, absolutely digging this track. The sax is gorgeous and every other element of the track complements it extremely well.
You really did well to keep the track interesting throughout. For example, I wasn't expecting that synth at 1:41 or that sweet chilled break at 2:41. What brings this track really high up is its jazzy vibe.
thank you for your congrates about this cover. finally it wasn't so easy to imagine a musical universe around the sax line but as you, when i listened (many many years before) this sound, i knew i will do something with this jewell.
glad to see that each looperman who let me a comment took time to appreciate this 05:44 of music.
i found myself the following motto: "there's music in my life because there is life in my music" (bleep) and i'm convinced that every artist can make his these words :)
Hey this was made on my birthday Haha The track is really well done. Love the glitchy effects throughout, and that melodic break at 1:51 is extremely cool. I wonder how you made it. The drums are very well done as well. Progression is cool and they sound great. Excellent work.
Really like this song. The instrumentals are very interesting (love the electronic riffs) and so is your rap style.
@BLEEP mentioned this - between 1:36 and 1:58 something doesn't sound right. To me it sounds like a mixing issue more than anything else. When it first hits, it sounds like the bass is missing. On top of that, the vocals sound more raw here than the other parts of the track.
Though I can't really put my finger on exactly how to fix it. Maybe check to see if anything was accidentally deleted considering the rest of the song sounds fine imo.
Anyways, great song. Hope to keep hearing more from you!
-Sheen
Damn Im late on this one lol, Thanks for the listen sheen, but yes I do agree with the middle, just something with mixing im sure. Anyways, hope to see you around for more!
The song sounds great! There are only a few pointers I'd like to add regarding the transition sounds.
At 0:22 you have the reverse crash to build tension which is great. Then the white noise downlift resolves it at 0:24, but that seems to come out of nowhere. If you reversed the white noise and made it a riser, then it would bridge the gap so it doesn't feel like it comes out of nowhere. Same thing happens at 1:12 and a few other times in the song.
I would fix just that and it would sound perfect. Great work here.
The first half I can definitely get down with. It's so odd and experimental and it makes for a very interesting listen. I love how at 1:04 you build the track up then subvert expectation by just dropping into the deep trance-ish vibe with the vocal chops. It's really cool.
I'm not really a fan of the second half though. The mixing could use work, especially after 1:59. The elements could sound cool, but they sound very cluttered, with some parts like the drums (and that weird sweeping fx that sounds awesome) getting too loud. It also doesn't really feel like there's much of a connection to the first part.
At 2:50 it sounds like you're trying to make it an Excision track and I find that it doesn't really work. When it drops at 3:14 it comes off as cheesy instead of epic like I'd expect it to sound.
I do like 3:22 though, and the way you cut off that theme off at 3:38 was very unexpected and sounded really cool. However, after a bit it started to feel a little messy.
It's awesome to hear something odd and different and you're not going to nail it every time. Plus this is just my two cents. Definitely keep working on stuff like this if you feel that's what you want to do!
I usually avoid older tracks on users' profiles, but I just had to leave my thoughts on this one.
This is a brilliant masterpiece. It's so expressive with so much emotion all the way through. And as the track continues to evolve it never loses its touch, with each section never feeling out of place. I disagree with @ sqrtofneg1 when he mentioned the trumpet sounds out of place. It gives of a feeling of confidence which I mention later.
I love how it transitions from this beautiful orchestral piece to the drum and guitar part (which feels intense and yet somehow calm at the same time. I almost can’t put it into words), then goes on to this electronic feeling break.
As I listen through the song, it becomes extremely easy to conjure up vivid images and stories in my head. It’s the mark of a great listening experience.
I think you’ve achieved what you’ve set out to do in capturing the blooming stage of a relationship, then seeing it decline in part 2. The first part gives off an air of mystery, curiosity, and shyness, and when the trumpets come in, it sounds like the person has become more confident to approach. Then the harps come in and it feels like the start of something beautiful. I can imagine two happy faces smiling in each other’s wake.
Then in part two, the mix of beauty from the guitar and intensity from the drums feels like two people who care about each other (or maybe once did) start to fall apart. I could go on forever so I think I’ll stop here Haha
The perfect mixing is only a bonus. I can only imagine the amount of time you spent on this track. I really wish that someday the third part will come to light, even though it has been a long time since you uploaded this. It feels like a story has been left unfinished.
There are some really good tracks here on Looperman, but in my opinion, this one tops it all. I really hope you continue to make music like this.
Thank-you for listening and for your very kind comments, Sheensheep! I'm glad you liked the track. I feel badly that I haven't finished it. I suspect I could could find a suitable singer (for hire) on Soundbetter, but I just haven't got the lyrics right yet. And I'm reluctant to pay out good $ to complete a song that really isn't as good as I think it could be. Interestingly, I really haven't attempted anything like this since. It was entirely dependent on those wonderful acapellas from Jacques Demers. I have several other tracks of varying genres in development, but nothing ready for exposure here on Looperman. All require vocals and the lyrics just aren't flowing for me. But, I keep on trying. :)

I like what you said about brightness. I was just boosting higher frequencies, didn't think to saturate or distort them.
Also that k?d remix is fire, cheers for bringing that to my attention!
