on I MAKE MY DAY by zappo
I love this man!!!!!!!!!...After listening to this music I traveled back in time with a ghetto blaster loaded with "I Make My Day" and hunted down Lester Young..I grabbed him and said listen to this man, groove to it..get into it,stop drinking and LISTEN....he looked at me and smiled, his brain engaged 5th gear and he got new inspiration and played like he did when he was young and at his peak!.....next time you write something like this send it to me please as I'd like to play the bass part! lol....you inspire me my friend!

Sounds good to me...a bit phasey in places but you got me with the intro which was excellent!!.....House definitely is hanging in there as apposed to Trance (what happened to that?)..cool

Hi PJB!
So you also liked that intro?
Well it's good to hear although I really entended to make a proper house tune this time with no odd ingredients...and this is what came out of it. Lol..

Trance is still alive - here on Looperman! =D
I've listened to some trance today even. I would like to ask what happened to techno?
Or maybe it's all techno but with a different name...

Thanks for stopping by and taking a listen!!

You know man listening to this reminds me of ripple tank experiments (which I did in physics class)there's heaps of reflections and bouncing incidents..hypnotic to a certain degree....I wonder what I would have thought if I heard it way back then, probably would have corrupted my yet to be bent brain! lol...cheers mate Dave

Damn bass kick nearly blew my head clean off! lol...Hey Spiv, this is really really cool man!..I love the merger of the postulating quasi angst vocals ala Talking Heads with some post industrial melting electro grunge grooving...it all adds up to a happening thang!..definitely off the mainstream grid which makes it all the more interesting..if those are your vocals,I'm totally blown away!!!diamond in the rough because it is rough and real!...you could make a hit with that stuff man!....better than good this is going places!

Hey, I'm honoured to receive such a positive review from you! To be compared to Talking Heads is just awesome! Yes they are my vocals, and I know they're not perfect, but I'll keep em. I really appreciate your support!

on FOOLING WITH MADNESS - Bilbozo by Bilbozo
Hey Bill....man this is way way Epic!!!!..totally in your face guitar God frenzy,whoa!...I love those arpeggios, the depth, the shred factor, the hair wind machine set on 11!..but what I like best is the controlled and calculated professionalism that you bring to the table, there's maximum expression going on and superb technique all honed to blow your mind (which it has)..the whole piece drips of focused energy building to a multi layered crescendo, not only would this rock any audience but the video game industry has deep pockets that undoubtedly will be filling yours at some point!....your like a musical Djin man there's a whirlwind inside you..(I was going to say your a guitar superhero, but the thought of you playing with your underwear over your pants put me off! lol)...awesomeness as only Bilbozo can!

on PeteJonTebar Doing the best I can by Soap
Hey mate, super song!!..there's no denying Pete is an awesome talent,he just projects himself totally and on a truly pro level..I really dig this song, the music is spot on and I can appreciate how you've put the vocals out front as they should be....this is no criticism but I also feel the instrumentation is if anything a little too much in the background, because Pete's voice is so well annunciated and clear I'd opt for a thicker mix with the music,he's going to cut through no problems....great talent from both of you!..cheers Dave

Hey Dave How are you ?

thanks for listening and for the kind words. Actually this was the big question regarding levels, and I did hesitate a lot. I didn't want the overall mix to sound muddy, and to be honest, I should have had a break during the mixing process, to work with fresh ears... But after two weeks without making music, frustration has been stronger than me and I wanted to release this song badly. I suppose you're totally right, and I'll definitely have to re-do the mixing...

Again thanks for the kind works and good advice.
Peace.

on What am I to you featuring Pauline Wright by RichieWinn
Hey Richie..your at it again mate, how come you seem to have the inside lane to all the hot female vocalists!lol...What a great cover!...truthful to the original but with just the right amount of verve and panache to make it totally self sufficient in it's own right..I couldn't help reflecting how easily Pauline could step into Patsy Cline's shoes, she has that 'clear tone to the bone' vocal presence so important for country-fied (fried, lol) excursions(and anything else I might add)....I just know that audiences you play in front of will leave well satisfied because whether you like to admit or not your a perfectionist in your craft..and it shows.

cheers Dave

Hey Dave! How are you?

I'm hoping my wife Linda doesn't find out the answer to your question (inside lane on hot female vocalists)! Glad you enjoyed this cover and my take on this lovely song. Pauline with be knocked out with comparisons to Patsy Cline so thank you on her behalf.

The perfectionist thing is true - I spend a lot of time on every aspect of the process and sometimes think I'm obsessive! I try to get it right.

Best

Planetjazzbass
Hey SJ....this is great!..love the huge sound stage present throughout, piano and vocals work so well together....with a track like this where space is at a premium it would be very easy to add lots of extra elements, which I might add could overwhelm the ambience you've already created....however if viewed as an audio drawing where the primary consideration is keeping things in perspective, adding things like electronic transients, strings, percussives etc can be incorporated successfully as long as they remain behind the reverb model you've created and move in conjunction with subtle volume changes...less is more here like a ballet stag...excellent work so far! cheers Dave

SeriouslyJoking replied 28th Jul 2013 - 12 years ago
Wow, one of Loopermans finest musicians listening and actually liking! May I kiss your feet? Hey don't run away!
Well, I also thought about that adding stuff maybe would ruin the hole song...at least the plane piano-voice-flute part. Maybe it's fine as it is? Less IS more. Often.

Besides, I still really don´t know what to add. It would be great with some real instrumentals, a guitar or what ever...which I don't have or play.
Need to take a break from this and come back later.

Thanks for the advice, Dave!

Detlef....I really am touched by this,a fantastic gesture and I'm totally humbled that you would dedicate a track to me!...awww shucks I'm embarrassed!.haha..Since I became a member at Looperman I've met some fantastic musicians, and none more so than yourself..not only do you project your whole personality into your music but you have this veritable prescient ability to expand upon a theme and bring the most organic melodies and musical focus to bear.....What a great track!!!..super funky with that unmistakeable Zappo flair and whimsy..I am very fortunate to have you as a musical ally and even more so as a friend!..tomorrow morning I am actually buying a new (second hand)guitar!a G&L Legacy..I will call it Zappo! lol...together we rock on into the centre of the galaxy brother!..cheers Dave :)

Man this has a lot of the iconic 60's vibes running through it,almost like stepping out of a Greyhound onto Haight Ashbury (not that I've done that, just years of American indoctrination!lol)...great song...at the start I thought this isn't pop it's more folky, but it's actually

Cheers for the review planetjazzbass. Always appreciate good unfinished comments from the masters lol. We just did this for fun and we made it up as we went along never knowing how it would turn out. 60s vibe is ok. Not sure what to call it. It's ok I guess. It would be an album filler for a famous e band I figure. The mastering sucks , I will get round to that eventually lol. Thanks for your comment mate. I will go to the next part now hahahah.

Hey mate......very cool Jazz piece my friend, moody, dark but also with a whimsical hint of life's imponderable questions, not unlike the persona of Montgomery Clift himself,a great actor...I loved all the films you mentioned and the era of 50's and 60's...nice tone on your guitar playing,Detlef Burrell! haha.....listening to this piece has put me in a good mood and let my mind drift..cheers mate Dave :)

Nice mix man!...apart from the driving quality of this track (which is cool!) it's got heaps of space to manoeuvre and isn't top heavy,a great blend of guitar friction and rhythmic thud factor....definitely presents with a contemporary feel as well, which is important (you wouldn't want to be carbon dated like I am! lol)..cool stuff!..cheers Dave :)

Hey Dave, thanx for taking the time to listen man, really appreciate that!! This was made for a video, so kinda of sounds weird to me without it. I think we come from a similar era and if I had your talent, you could carbon date me and wrap me up for Christmas!!

I also wanted to thank you for inspiring the Looperman Blues project. Not sure if you've heard it, so here it is: http://www.looperman.com/tracks/detail/143435

on Charle funk a doodle by RichieWinn
Hey Richie good to see you man!...nice sounds mate!,forget all that housey mousey crap (I mean the genre tag,I don't want to upset any house fans!)...your playing fusion here 100% plain and simple..a muso always plays his age there's no escaping it..from the tight punchy bassline,to that lovely swirling lead progression it's pure jazz rock(fusion)...now that we've got that acorn out of the way I can review it (lol)...What I really dig about this piece is the space available and room to extemporise freely notwithstanding the early phase in it's construction..I'd be inclined to further expand your dark 'synth' side and add an electronically styled counter melody throughout, everything else is already there...it's cool now and will be an absolute cracker I'm certain!...cheers Dave :)
RichieWinn
RichieWinn replied 8th Jul 2013 - 12 years ago
Hi Dave

Good to hear from you and thanks for the comments. I've tried to keep the track skinny clean and a bit "precise" if that makes sense. Yes, fusion seems to be a common thread of the comments posted so I'm happy with that.

It's work in progress and your suggestions on expanding some electronic counter melodies will work well. Thanks also for noting the space available which of course I will resist filling up. The sax player in the band has a copy of the track and I hope to get him around sometime and see what he comes up with. Could be interesting!

Anyway I think this kind of things is right up your street so maybe next track we should have try at doing something together? What do you think?

Best

Dave, my many apologies for not getting back to you sooner. There is so much going on and time got away from me.

Your comments touched my heart. You also caught what was my intent in composing this track...to let those who love and appreciate my father's contribution to music he him speak as to what and who he was. To be his voice...to keep him relevant...to keep him alive in the hearts of those who love him for who he was and for those who appreciate his music.

on CUBAN SUNSET - BILBOZO by Bilbozo
Heya mate...Oh! I love this man!!...such a sweet sound,so bright and breezy,so full of good vibes...there's something about an acoustic steel string that just sings, the timbre is open and full of chiming resonance...and you have to really play the instrument well to coax out this innate charm (no hiding within a wall of sustain as many players do)...I don't think there's anyone that does as good a job of incorporating Steve's horns into a composition as you do,it's so totally seamless it's mind blowing..The production side of the coin is as polished as the playing,I have no doubt that if you ensconced yourself in a top line recording studio the incumbent engineer would be twiddling his thumbs most of the time and not dials!(lol)..Super work Bill!..totally downloading this for the car stereo.
cheers Dave :)

on My first Ableton Track by ElectronBlue
Hey 12 String...great chilled out groove happening here man, pretty blissed out vibe all the way through, with some very tasty guitar as well!...Ableton is my DAW of choice and I love it..the arrangement view is where an old school muso like yourself will find his true home, the linear aspect of it is just fantastic and you can see your whole track mapped out with a plethora of control options....I won't go into specifics obviously, session view is cool as well..a lot of people only use that....anyway great to see another Ableton fan on the Loop! cheers Dave
ElectronBlue
ElectronBlue replied 23rd Mar 2013 - 12 years ago
Wow, coming from you I feel well praised indeed. I agree Ableton is great but hard to learn for an old timer like me lol. Love all the controls and instruments though. The Amp section is great. Midi is great. The loops section is something completely new to me but is a complete blast being able to put in a loop and just move it about with other loops and just create a completely new sound. Having said that it's not my music. But still Amazing! I still like just jamming along to a drum beat though with my guitar and keyboard. I am going to try harder to record a loop of my guitar and keyboard twiddly bits even though it messes up my train of thought and stops the flow of music and see what comes up. You got the old school bit right LOL hahahah

Hey mate very cool track!...I really dig the orchestration you've infused into this composition, metal songs by their very character are somewhat heavy(lol)but you've segued superbly into the main thrust of the guitar riff with cinematic zeal and aplomb...I can imagine this work as the first stanza in a huge cinematic saga that would blow people's minds or just as easily be incorporated into gaming audio (with the same result)..great work on all fronts!

I think when you can bring vision to your music you've actually reached the starting point of what it's really all about,it then transforms into storytelling.
I part company with my long time creative muse Salavador Dali here for his abhorrence of folk (and jazz) music,no doubt founded on a misconception that these forms represented an unsophisticated and anachronistic section of society, nothing could be further from the truth...all the culture of the world has at it's heart the voice and memories of the people and nowhere is this more personified than in folk music, and this composition is a superb example.....Such a beautiful song that transports the listener to a multitude of dimensions, you just don't get that everyday,it's a rare thing...I'm amazed,astounded..dare I say dumbfounded!..Now if Salvador had his head screwed on right he might comment.."This song is autobetrothed by it's own chastity".
To Janis and Ed..I salute you!
cheers Dave :)

I'm always amazed by your clever, deeply thought and interesting comments, Dave ... !
I agree with what you say about this misconception about folk music and the fact that folklore is the people's ancestral oral tradition, culture and rituals . Some people look down on folk music considering it as too "rustic", and tend to forget that each musical style has its origins in a previous one, just like blues was born after slaves work songs for instance .
As Ed's music's so pure and delicate, I felt I could sing about tenderness, nostalgia, nature and memories .
I'm very much honoured by your words, Dave and thank you warmly for the time you spent commenting on this song . What pleases my friends, fills my heart with bliss and I'm indeed very glad Ed and you all liked it .
cu around,
My friendliest thoughts,
Janis :)
