Hi Ed

Thanks for the kind words and your support. It is good to know loopers of your calibre find some merit in my work - thank you.

I find EZDrummer a great plugin and so easy to use too. Apart from having some excellent sounds (which you can add to later) all the included grooves have been played in by real drummers. You can also opt to use it in eight channel mode which gives you enormous control when mixing. I'm a big fan and would recommend to anyone - it's not expensive either.

Thanks again for stopping by.

Hey Richie, I'm not sure how I missed this one either. I'm also not sure why only 2 comments on a great piece like this....Patricia does such a great job, but when you add your amazing musicianship - well it is absolutely magic. Love, love, love that guitar tone. Man, I would kill for tone like that. It is always a master's class in how things should be done when I drop by your place. Thanks for keeping me inspired and for sharing your great talents. And a huge thanks to Patricia for her generosity as well.

Hey Bear

Thanks for the kind words. I am always grateful for comments and although this track hasn't attracted many I'm still very pleased with it. When I heard Patricia's vocal line I was hooked! When she very kindly sent the three part as separate tracks I was completely smitten!

Glad you liked the guitar sound too and please, drop by anytime and we can swap notes on all kinds of stuff - that would be great!!

Hi there Richie,

Wanted to give you are review back as you gave me one of last rock song I did recently.
Pat Edwards has sung on a couple of my country songs and I wanted to hear how she did here with you as well.

Well I really like this song, and her vocals are spot-on as usual. I like the lead guitar part in particular. Everything sounds really good and clean. It's always great to hear vocals that cut thru and you understand every word.

All I can say is....Wonderful job in putting this song together. Sounds it could easily be a radio song.

Thanks for sharing it.

Ok guys..I'm taking the gloves off from now on (mainly due to the fact that I'm doing all my first take monitoring through my Auratone speakers now and I've raised them up to ear level, they do not lie)......Hot Damn!..the track still sounds fantastic!lol(as if it wouldn't,the mid range is where all the serious stuff sinks or swims)...I just love the attention to detail that you put into your work Richie, the drum track alone is golden, fantastic tom fills..I was getting quite nostalgic listening to this,it's pure early 80's rock..a lost fragment of the last vestige slowly subsiding into the quicksand of musical oblivion...sad...(lol) I just did a flashback (sorry)...ahhh,what can I say ...there is only one way Pat's voice can be improved and that's to run it through something like an Avalon737 tube pre, their only about $2,700 haha....and even then the results would only be in a 10% margin..the woman is amazing (all hail the Queen)....Man you keep stepping up your game and producing quality material,it really is a pleasure to listen to,and so informative about how to do it right.....quality effort with a superb result!

Hi Dave

It's always good to read your comments and I'm glad the Auratones gave the track a good review too! The tracks with Patricia naturally evolve around the vocal and I spend hours editing and refining the track into a coherent piece. Yes, your dead right, it's all in the detail and it's just great you notice and mention that. Thank you.

Ah a valve pre amp - what I wouldn't give for one of those. It was on my birthday wish list but hasn't materialed as yet!!! Apart from Patricia's undoubted singing talent she does a great job recording her voice too - the acapellas are always clean and of great quality. A pleasure to work with.

Thanks for the great comments Dave - much appreciated.

Hey Richie. What's up again. The one thing I love about your mixes is that you don't mix it down to hot. Very easy on the ears. I've heard some so called professional mixes on the radio, and some were so hot on levels in parts of the song that it just killed the whole song.

Really disappointing especially if you liked the song. If I would to ever get a CD mastered, I would tell the master-er to make it sound good and not be concerned about how loud they could make it.

Awesome track Richie. You have what they called golden ears. I love the solo at 1:45. This tune deserves to be on the radio. I'm a big fan now. Peace man

Hey Dachopdocta

How's it going? I don't know if you have read it but there is a very interesting blog running at the moment regarding mixing and mastering without making tracks too loud. I am not fan of compressing the life out of my tracks and like to have some dynamic range whenever possible. Your comments about being "not too hot" and "easy on the ears" I take as great compliments - thank you.

Glad you liked the track and thanks very much for stopping by to listen and post comments. Much appreciated.

Ah yes! Now this is what i call a QUALITY piece of music. It sounds like you guys met up at the studio and recorded this.
Farisha sounds excellent and i'm wondering why i haven't had a go with one of her pellas yet.
The mix quality is superb and the choice of notes are a perfect compliment to that excellent vocal.

Yes, what a voice eh? Fantastic. Was a bit in two minds about the intro but I think it works well. Sets the tone for the track. I'm glad you liked the instrumentation too - I didn't want to swamp the vocal so kept it minimal. Thanks for the comments - really appreciate it.

Now from a musical point of view this sets a new standard of quality. The phrasing is interesting and the instrumentation helps the song evolve really well. This really proves how sometimes 4-5 instruments can go a long way in creating a moving piece.

Now from the point of view of someone who has the job of finding flaws in audio recordings and fix them I'd like to add a couple of advises...

The reverb on the vocals....use the pre-delay setting and make that reverb longer(at the moment it sounds mono to me so a stereo one will work better) as it will widen the vocals and by using a longer pre-delay (above 30ms) you will have a nice lush sound that will create a smooth glue around the vocals (think India Arie - Ready for love....for a lack of a better explanation)

Overall I'd guess that I'm gonna say that reverb is needed a bit more on instrumentation as well as everything is a bit dry at the moment and reverb gels like nothing else.

So that was the technical review...

You obviously have a great set of songwriting skills and the quality standard of your work is quite high which always get's me wondering why didn't you follow a music career, you could've had a great career.

All the best!
RichieWinn
RichieWinn replied 1st May 2012 - 13 years ago
Hi Mahloo

It's amazing - you have such a great pair of ears!!! I have just had a look at the settings for the vocal on this track and the pre delay is 10ms, is mono and it isn't up too much either. I will have a play around with your suggestions tomorrow (my ears are asleep at the moment!) so thanks very much indeed for the advice. Yes, a bit more reverb on the instrumentation too maybe. It's down to me being "minimal" and not wanting to smother it all and wash it away.

My "career" in music has been (and still is) very enjoyable and the current work I produce is, I think, the best to date. I was professional in the late seventies but a band of serious songwriters didn't really stand much of a chance once the punk thing erupted! We tried!!

Thanks again for the technical advice and for the very rewarding comments on the track. Much appreciated.

Bonjour mon Ami ....
First, I get up and take my "Chapeau" ....
This adaptation, is proof of your talent, because this "trick" is not easy to resume.
You did it by bringing great simplicity, and without artifice particular.
The choice of this talented voice (and you know how much I like, to integrate voices in my pieces) is a good thing here.
You bring a little freshness to this song, which was taken up so much and so often.
I love your musical conception, your talent ....
Sorry if I repeats me, probably age ....
Congratulations Richie ....

Just like moonlight through the pines!..one of my favourite lyric lines of all time..Man you don't do things by half measures do you..I've got to say this must have been very difficult to get right, and you've done that in spades!..I don't believe it!!! I've actually found a flaw..lol(at the very end of the fadeout there's an micro artifact left behind)..you are human after all..hehe sorry mate I've been dying to find something like that..same with Bilbozo's stuff..it's unnaturally(uncannily) good! :)...back to the tune....I've heard this song interpreted so many times by so many artist's(The Band's version with Richard Manuel singing is my fav)..I think what sets this version apart is the balancing of the piano tone with the superb vocals and the way your phrasing is arranged, there's more than little of the ghost of Hoagy Carmichael strolling around in there somewhere....dropping in that lead guitar passage takes it into a true ensemble feel as well..fantastic job, you've somehow managed to meld traditional aspects of this song while contemporizing enough to make it thoroughly modern and your own....I think the true worth of artist is when he's outside his comfort zone, but he's the only one that's aware of this.
