Ok wow on the intro, is that an ocarina? As I listen I am just drawn into this so my first musical pass will be about how it effects me as a listener. Bass has such an awesome groove, sinister in nature. Chord structure is almost deviant. then that wicked guitar solo moment.(I might mix it just a hair smaller in the overall mix) But just a wow. For me the bass work drives this piece. The subtle sounds create this flow of energy to the piece. the other sounds are mere accoutrements that accent this musical art piece well. The sax is so well played and mixed. What I like about your work Dave is the attention to detail in the arrangement. It's almost a lost art in music these days.
thanks to this song I started to explore 801 with Phil Manzanera once again, so thanks for that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Plbbo6GEk0&html5=1
I can't wit for the hip hop remix..;-) just kidding.
Steve
Hey Steve in reply to your great review,I have just updated the mix and done as you suggested and lowered the guitar solo a tad,I was wondering why my right ear was sore! lol (bit of screech factor there)haha....thank you very much for taking the time to listen and constructively help in the production!..I still have a near mint condition copy of 801!! Phil Manzanera is one of my favs!...Hell mate if a HipHop remix produced some of the folding, you would see my high horse pulled over to the curb at the first baseball cap shop that quickly it'd make your eyes water! lol....again thanks for your input mate!...cheers Dave :)
Well Dave....you dont post as often as many of us (me in particular) would like...but when you do..man you just raise the bar...I`m not really sure what to even say about this one...for me, its an example of what might be accomplished when a group of fine musician /composers/ producers get together and build the music with thought and patience...(I`ll have another chat with myself about my lazy habits..but it hasnt worked before)...let me just say I enjoyed this one immensely...and I raise my glass in respect to all of you..(its just beer but I like it)...great stuff mate....Ed
Hey Ed...aahh mate your way too kind!..I'm definitely going to be lifting my musical output and want to explore more orchestrated pieces soon with extended acoustic backgrounds...it's heartening to hear a fine musician like yourself enjoying this piece,I was a little concerned it was too haphazard and all over the shop, maybe it is! haha...again thank you for taking the time to listen,I'll be heading down to your page for some Canadian 'windage' (I'm not absolutely certain what this actually means but someone said it in Full Metal Jacket in reference to whiskey and I thought it was cool! lol)..cheers mate Dave :)
This is a very, very nice piece of work. solid production...
A spot or 2 things just get in the way of each other, but not in a bad way...
Everything is so clean, that they just stick out harmonically to my ear
anyway...
But over all it's top shelf stuff, a Highway Roller 4 sure...
Hey TG..thanks for the great review mate!!...I've updated the track with a few slight mixing changes on advisement from the cool people of Looperman like yourself!!!...I'm glad you enjoyed the track and again thank you from Detlef,Steve and myself..cheers Dave :)
This really is true fusion music and I mean a specific thing by that that I'll now try to explain.
I end up having to put quite a few of my tracks here in the 'fusion' genre - mostly because nothing else seems to fit and there's no 'psychedelic' or at least 'psychedelic rock'.
I'm generally not happy using that tag and listening to this track reminds me why. I think fusion is actually a proper genre (often 'jazz fusion') and not just what you get when a bunch of genres are mixed together. This track I hear as a classic example of that fusion genre. It's certainly got the jazz in it.
I'm not particularly into the fusion genre, even though I do a lot of music making that has a great deal in common with it. Maybe it's the somewhat meandering sort of vibe or the slightly atonal jazz aspect. Hard to say. 0:04 is a classic sort of atonal jazz fusion chord. It might even be your bass.
0:57 those high notes really catch my attention, especially at 1:03. Quite theremin-like there and a cool sound.
Fat, solid beat in this but perhaps your bass tone is the standout element. I don't mean just the fine playing but that the tone really adds the character that I think a more regular bass guitar sound just wouldn't add. I still want that sound. Must get a fretless bass someday.
2:30 that's a good snare.
3:28 I like the rocking guitar, especially the weird lead. I think it does drown the drums (and thus groove) out a bit but that's probably just about OK.
4:54 guitar solo is also pretty damn cool. With some tight, funk guitar behind it.
It's overall a well produced and even better played track featuring fine performances from everyone involved. Makes me think of live music rather than home listening type of stuff.
Maybe the closest thing I've done to this sort of jazz fusion track is the following one. It kind of sounds quite acoustic but it's all sample-based keyboard instruments and modified drum loops. No live, recorded instruments, for a change.
Think big feel small..I like that,in fact that would somewhat describe my feelings when I look at insect life, which greatly interests me........I've always considered 'fusion' just as you describe it....though sometimes it masquerades under it's post 70's moniker of 'jazz rock'...(have to prod Looperman into getting a Psychedelic genre!)....my bass tone here is from an 5 string instrument I built myself, and which is about to undergo some major reconstructive surgery (deeper chambered body amongst other things and removal of the magnetic pickup so it's only a bridge piezo) this track's sound was 75% magnetic, 25% piezo...It's a pity we don't live in the same town,I'd come around and show you how to make one(or build you one! lol) about $450-$550 outlay in materials for a bass that would cost many thousands if bought retail.........thank you for a very cool review mate,Slap and Zappo deserve the major kudos here as I'm just the bass player! haha..will be checking out your track and many more!..all the best Dave :)
Really enjoyable fusion track with initial pleasantly lazy vibe which subsequently gives the room for tasty sax soloing, raising the temperature a bit, and finaly leaves the space to
very solid guitar combinations which do the final trick. Well done to all involved!
Hey there Orlando, thanks for the listen mate...glad you liked it,a bit of a free for all but we all survived unscathed to play another day!...cheers mate your review is very much appreciated!....Dave :)
Very interesting and stylish fusion here! Haven't heard from Slap or Zapp for quite a while, so this is a nice change here on the loop! I can always get into your bass style, and I must say that it's my favorite part of the track. I guess the crunchy guitar part around the 4 minute mark is pretty cool, but I feel that it's a bit on the obtrusive side in a mix like this. I got the feeling that there were two guitar tracks going on at the same time which had virtually the same tone to them, maybe that led to me feeling it was on the loud side. The cleaner guitar chords after that were quite nice though. I enjoyed listening to the whole piece, and you all did a great job!
Hey Pat..first off I really do owe you an apology,I've been very slack lately and haven't been listening to much music, which more importantly means your great music!..I shall be rectifying this situation post haste!(well in the next couple of days) :).........I did share a few of your insights concerning this piece,I think it's because both Detlef and I were coming off a little hiatus from music,so it ended up a wham bam thank you mam affair,lol... a smorgasbord comes to mind or an all you can eat steak plaza! haha..thanks for your concise valued opinion mate! cheers Dave :)
hi again, it's just to let you know I enjoyed this track.
very inspiring fusion stuff. there's some things I do not like (fanfare, out of tune bass guitar and more) but overall 'feeling' is great. usually I do not paste the links to my recordings but you might check out my fusion song anyway: https://www.looperman.com/tracks/detail/160477 it is 'driven by a keyboard player' kind of track. Your guitar playing is really interesting - I will check out if there's some bass guitar sounds available from the thousands of your loops uploaded.
All the best to you, Alex
sounds nice. I would preffer some more straight played chord progression on keyboards to all the atmospheres added here. I really like the slapjohnson's playing - it sets the composition more in a specific tonality. there's some unnecessary (to me of course) 'harmonic ambivalence' at parts over these fine bass grooves you've played. the track seems a bit 'over-fused' even, if that makes sense. from about 4:38 mark it sounds much simple to me and that's my favourite part (with acoustic guitar). I can hear double bass loop and bass overtones at 0:22 - nice jazz feel.
nice work, this type of mixing is not my favourite though.
I enjoyed your track, thanks for allowing downloads, Alex
Hey Alex..thank you for the great candid review! much appreciated...I think sometimes a fork in the road appears during the conception stages of a track and looking back one can sometimes think, hell I should have consulted a map first! lol ...I hear what your saying and mostly agree, but this track was always going to be a little provocative tonally, and yes we (I) probably over cooked it,next time I'll be setting the oven at 160 degrees for a slow even baking.haha ;).....again thank you for the honest appraisal,it means a lot mate!...cheers Dave :)
hi.
very cool intro. too bad you leave that 'dark ambient' atmosphere (which could be developed into an another cool track for sure) - the 'main body' it very 'jazz': the trumpet reminds even miles davis recordings at parts, at least as far as I am familiar with his recordings...
Anyway it all sound very smooth overall; maybe too much 'punch' on drums for me - I do not like it but the composition is very fine.
I do not think that bass guitar here sounds really like a 'bassline'. More 'abstract' and 'sound-image' than really constructive lines but still it works. You could fade out that track but explosion was a nice choice as well - why not?
I can hear some eastern flavours and a motorycle (a plain?) passing by (1:30) - the 'cinematic' element of this track.
very nice track. Alex
hi, the tone of your guitar reminds me of jaco pastorius, even some licks sound familiar to me. just nice improvisation without any pre-defined structure or changes but definitely I'd say this is a 4/4 feel or whatever.
Anyway very nice abstract programmed synth sound texture and some cool free improv.
I will check out more of your tracks for sure. this one was really nice. Greetings, Alex
Gentlemen,
May I congratulate you all on a spectacular performance. I'm standing holding my lighter in the air boys. Oh in case you didn't guess, fav'd.
Dave the comment on this started my voyage and it was a pleasant one. Love the sound of your bass, the guitars, the synths, the sax - hot!
I assume as the producer Dave, you mastered? I feel as though I am in the presence of some extremely gifted artists. Peace.
Mark.
Hey Mark, thanks for trolling this old cod piece mate!lol...yes I mastered the track, though I'd probably do it a little differently these days,I remember having to roll off just about all the treble tone on my bass to get the right sound and thinking, jeez I wish I had a precision!(which i now do) haha....hopefully I can get all the collaborators together again sometime and we'll do another....be dropping by your page mate to check out your material real soon, again thank you for your kind review very much appreciated! cheers Dave :)
This is great! Really solid funk bass guitar groove.
Nice funky guitar, chill and smooth saxophone playing.
I like the background noises, synths and heavy breathing also. Simply great jam session.
Greetings,
A.
Dave....we need a new one from you mate (though you will have trouble besting this one)....consider yourself severly beaten over the head with a wet noodle...its been way too long....Ed
Guilty as charged mate!..Hey Ed thanks for the look in,you are correct,it's been way too long...suffice it to say my creative juices have been flowing in other areas (mainly my art work)...however a musical tsunami is gathering on the horizon and will sweep the beaches clean of all previous sand constructions (and beer cans)...Dave ;)
Oh yeah, majorly groovy jam you did here! Love the tone and vibes throughout! You've really shown how versatile you are. The only late night bar scenes I've been a part of were rock and stuff like that, so I can't really judge the atmosphere, but it sounds pretty live to me. Reading about breaking your picking nail was entertaining, I too am not a fan of picks, especially on acoustic guitar and bass. Read something way back giving advice to cut your left hand nails short and leave your right hand nails a little longer... obviously for a right handed person... heh... I've been doing that pretty much constantly since then even when I let my guitars collect dust for years at a time. Any way, jammin tune, Love it! Fave!
Saw you on line so i thought i'd drop in. Yeah i've already reviewd this track but who says we can't stop by more than once? It's a brilliant piece and i personally think i might even stop by and give it a third or fourth review. Kind of reminds me of something from Pink Floyds "Division Bell" album which i happen to think is a bloody good album. You've pulled a masturfull mix off here and grabbed my attention without even having to stitch a squid to your face.
I'm just going to kick back and chill to the rest of this piece then i'm off to superglue some crabs to my nuts.
Cool trumpet by the way.

A year has passed and I just now ran into this track. Shame on me.
The thing I like most about this track is the steady groove that just keeps going on and on. It sounds like a locomotive that's on speed and hard to stop. Solid might be the right word.
"Solid" comes in mind also about the mixing. I do hear a solid presence of the lower frequencies in this track. But I also realize it is difficult to make choices :-). Somebody once explained to me that writing is expunging. Maybe this applies to music as well.
But this composition is just wonderful, no theme, no catchy hooks, just steadiness. I love it.
Oh damn....LOL.....I am just now getting the references...ahaha....I am known to be a little slow, but this is ridiculous!! John Holmes...tail gunner...Lahore...Enola Gay...Elephant Whisperer.... Lawd Ham and cheese!
Your talent is massive (no pun intended...I think)
I have finally recovered from my birthday celebrations!! I'm always excited when I see you have posted a new track and you never fail to impress. It's a lovely journey you create here with such a depth of texture and colour it just keeps you involved and waiting for the next sound gem! Great stuff Dave.
