I test sounds against the rest of the mix. If I can't hear them, I don't use them. This helps me to keep things in relatively separate frequency ranges, without much mixing. Much of the ethereal stuff never repeats, which takes a lot of samples for a 5:45 track, especially when they are layered.

I also tend to use loops and samples that are already in the correct tempo or key, rather than having to do too much stretching and pitching. This is more for economy than sound quality, though sometimes you want that "stretched," or "contracted" sound.

Thanks for commenting. I made a lo-fi album, to think more subtractive and "white space," and now I've decided to test my maximum complexity level.

Stay tuned, the stuff coming in the future will be a mixture of written content, improvised instrumentation, and parameter limited random generation (with possible randomized FX controls).

When the loops and samples count exceeded the FLStudio track limit of 125, I almost had a nightmare. I had to spend an afternoon rechanneling 150+ tracks into about 60. The mix is more raw than I would've liked, but I think I picked really good sounds, so I didn't need much more than a master compressor, after all the leveling. I try to pick sounds that sit in separate frequency ranges, rather than relying on EQ.

I've rethought the 125 track limitation, and now, with samplers and sequencers, my future tracks can become far more complex. I'm going to combine this with random generative plugins, and an absurd number of samples and loops (possibly around 500).
