Description : Although I really enjoy all types of music, R&B is the genre I love the most. Frustratingly, it is also the genre where I know that the tracks I create are very far from the quality I strive for. Part of it is the superior musicianship that goes into really good R&B tracks. And, part of it is the vocal that I hear in my head but can never hope to create in the track. The Rhodes piano lead provides a sense of what the melody line would be. Incomplete song, but I'm posting it anyway.

Thanks, BeatMaker. It does have a nice easy feel to it. But, I need to figure out chorus and bridge sections for it. Hopefully, something will occur to me at some point. Perhaps a few years from now? :)
Thanks for the encouragement, Arloph. The bass is a combination of electric and acoustic.
I'm removing this track from the "featured" list from now on so that I can comment on tracks of other members without pushing this one into the featured tracks pages all the time.
Tempo is 97 bpm. Kind of funny to have it such an odd number. But I've found that, sometimes, just 1 or 2 bpm makes a big difference in the feel of the track and how the groove works. I'm kind of surprised by that.
I know I don't get here as much anymore,
but it seems I should have heard this one.
It has such an "older" feel of a sitcom I can't think of right now.
Love it!!!!! :-)
Don't be so hard on your voice,
you are the best translator of what's inside your head for it. :-)
Nice to hear from you! You could be right. Maybe I unknowingly re-created the theme from some sitcom from the 70's or 80's. That bell melody line that comes in at bar 9 might be the culprit! :)
I have a really bad memory for some things like that. I once used an online plargism checking service to see whether some stuff I had written for my consulting work was actually lifted from some previously published source. Sure enough, what I had written matched something published, word for word. The problem was, I had written the original stuff and had totally forgotten about it! So, I could be copying something I heard years ago when I used to watch sitcoms. :)
Anyway, I will take your advice on no being so hard on my voice. But, the reality for this track is that in my head, the voice I hear is a fine, smooth, R&B vocalist who knows how to deliver a ballad. I just can't figure out what the lyrics should be about.
Well here is the weirdness I offer though it's not really that weird. I changed the key, tempo, and time signature a few times, added guitar, some bass, and drums. I tried to keep it as chill as the original, let me know if I did it justice: https://www.looperman.com/tracks/detail/221541
Thanks ceURR. I think it turned out OK. bringerofDoom has built a new track on it and it is very interesting. A lot more variation and complexity. You should check it out. Nice guitar work on it. REAL guitar! :)
Thanks. Definitely has a nice vibe going. I really need to figure out additional structure and lock in the chord progressions for those. It's not boring (yet), but this type of music can't just stay in one progression for the entire song. Need to roll up my sleeves and dig in. :)
Hi, Nick. Thanks for the supporting words! I agree. Patricia could do something special with vocals on this. I've got several unfinished tracks using her acapellas. Would be amazing to have her Collab on a track like this, but I think she's very selective about working with others, which I totally understand. I actually had thought of this with a male vocal, but your comment is making me re-think that. Could be either.
Thanks, Terry. I think I did a pretty good job on the bass line, if I say so myself. Well, perhaps not the bass line itself, but the bass sound is pretty good I think. This might be one where, after letting it marinate for 4 years, I should spend some time trying to write a chorus and bridge section so it can grow up and be a real song! :)
Pretty nice track. It sounds like Hall and Oates, if you had them singing on this it would be a hit! Philly sounding r n b. Mix is well done, soothing soft mix for a relaxing track.
I see you have a collab request posted. I was noodling some short melodies and phrases here and there on my acoustic to this. Would that be something you might want to add? I could even give you a couple dry tracks of me trying things thru the song which you could chop up and/or pick and choose what parts go where and how much you want to add to the production. Basically it would be giving you a bunch of loops to pick through. Let me know.
Yes, I thing it has flavors of Philly RnB and a bit of Motown as well. I’ve got a couple of tracks that need a Barry White type vocalist, some others meant for somebody along the lines of Marvin Gaye, some that were my attempt to write an R. Kelly song, and some that definitely are influenced by Hall and Oates.
I really like Hall and Oates. And, I just ate up every episode of “Daryl’s House”. They are both great musicians and songwriters.
Yes, I’d definitely be interested in getting your noodling on the track. I will PM you with my email address so we can get connected on that.
hello eric. it’s so cool to hear someone really stretch out on the rhodes, reminds us the instrument is capable of producing so much more than great vamps! everything is so lyrically played that the track certainly doesn’t suffer from lack of vox. you know sometimes when i hear something this straightfowardly melodic, my inner grinch starts with ‘get me off this fuckin love boat,’ but i’d have to be more of a curmudgeon than even that not to be digging this.
I know exactly what you mean about “love boat”, xstokes. I am acutely aware that when I play in a melody line using a Rhodes or B3 patch, the track can sound like Muzak (elevator music). It bothers me quite a bit, actually, because with a good vocalist, I think the tracks would not sound that way at all. I do know that my melody sense is more lyrical and simple than contemporary pop songs or alt and NuRnB for that matter. If I was a student in a music school like Berkeley (I’d never get in) I am sure I’d be severely criticized for a lack of imagination in the construction of melodies. I’ve been thinking that I should spend a bit of time studying artists like Charlie Puth who really knows how to do this well. :)
To me this is not at all far from the quality you strive for. It sounds well produced and lush indeed. It's just the vocalist missing. I guess Phil Perry would fit perfectly, but ... I know, I know, what can we do? Eric, maybe you should check out Mykael's profile here (Mykael). I've heard very nice vocals on some of his tracks and had contact with him. He's a very nice person and ready to collab if the track matches his taste, of course. Just a suggestion.
This is a wonderful track that deserves to be completed!
Have a nice day,
Micky
Thanks, Steve. I actually didn’t fuss much over the mix. As I mentioned to CinCoCent, this track is actually 4 years old. I have updated versions of some of the instruments (the Rhodes in this version is the stock instrument included with Logic Pro) and better effects plugins. But, I didn’t replace anything, so I think that’s telling me something. Sometimes better to just leave well enough alone, I guess.
Thanks, CinCoCent. Very nice to get some positive feedback. I had forgotten about this track entirely. I actually did it 4 years ago! Ran out of ideas on how to extend it, I guess. But, the reaction from LM members has been pretty good, so perhaps I should try again.
