Description : Happy Halloween! Good to participate this year in the annual Halloween thread!Just some freestyle playing (slightly sloppy since i'm not used to this guitar) trying out my newly born Boneshaker guitar a 4 string fretless 25 1/2 inch scale, the lowest string being a bass guitar string, played with a wood pick and bone slide, buffalo horn nut and bridge, my own handwound bone pick up. You can run but you can't hide, the apocalypse is coming! Zombies will rule the earth.
This sounds great! The sound effects and the slide(y) guitar give it a eerie - spooky feel. It's recorded and mixed very well. Wasn't aware of cigar box guitars. I'm going to have to look into this. Thanks for sharing!
Cigar box guitars are very addicting!! You've been warned before venturing down that rabbit hole ;) They're actually the Grandad of the blues, many famous bluesmen got started on one, such simple but expressive instruments. Yes, slide guitar, no frets on this one, played with a handcarved bone slide and wood pick. These materials give a softer more mellow tone than say a bone or plastic pick and a metal or glass slide
Well getting as wasted as possible seems a good plan with the world gone to hell and overrun by the walking dead :p I love the way a cigar box guitar can tell a take all on it's own. Thanks EggsOntoast, now I'm hungry.
I'm sad Looperman has been taken over by urban producers so I've escaped to the swamp LOL! Thanks Cru, I need to fine tune this guitar a bit but really wanted to record it in time for Halloween.
They always come back! :)
Better be careful when you walk around. At least at night, in the dark and all alone. Mostly you will only have a meeting with a normal stupid zombie but with a little luck there will be one of the higher thinking ones. And all i heard was that they like good CBG player for some fine colabs .....
Well done. Nice sound, nice playing, nice recording, nice feeling!
You're right Joe, they always come back! But what exactly is dead? https://youtu.be/PkJFq9tNe8w The stupid ones are pretty slow and easy to outrun, it's the thinking ones you need to watch. I hear there's a thinking German zombie looking to collab on some cbg music ;) I seem to be pulled in other directions constantly lately. I was just trying out this new build when I thought I better record it because I probably won't get a chance to later, it does need some minor setting up still. I have a new string bass to record with too with another started.
I'm hoping this winter to get a break and record/write again. Just sat down to wind a custom pick up for someone and I get called into work, the new normal...
Burton, how is it going? So, I moved to Florida and live right next to a big old pond with gators and snakes and mosquitoes and heat and humidity and this song absolutely set the mood for me. Love the sound from the new 4 string, looks like you crafted a winner. So good to hear something from you, especially one that sounds like my new life haha. I hope all is well.
Good to see you around Bear :D To the swamps of Florida from the dry deserts of Arizona, quite the change! I hear the weather is crazy there being surrounded on 3 sides by ocean. If if helps I have a swamp in my yard :)Going well, I've been very busy in the cigar box guitar world lately, not so much time for writing, recording and interacting on here as I'd like, trying to change that. FatKnuckldeFreddy performed on a 4 stringer with the same set up at Maine's inaugural cigar box guitar festival this summer. I had to make one!! Even got him to sign this one at my last luthier show. I just made a 2 string 34 inch scale cigar box bass with another Boneshaker box and my own 2 pole handwound pick up, recording soon to come.
I get a mental picture of the Louisiana Bayou at night and for whatever unfortunate reason, ending up on foot in the wrong place at the wrong time! And wouldn't ya know it the damn flashlight batteries are Dead ! Dang, why did I have to use that word !!!!!
Hey Neo, thanks for starting the annual Halloween thread, it lit a bit of a fire under my ass to get recording. Thought you were smart buying those discount batteries again huh? I never really got down the delta blues on my 6 stringers, seem to have nailed it taking up slide on these homemade guitars. More to come don't die too soon!!
nice atmosphere. sounds like reverb and delay used on the guitar strings, along with the sound effects of walking. nice touch. not really a creepy vibe, more so one of somber and melancholy
Exactly, more of a creepy somber atmosphere, after all the Zombies have won. This is what I love about cigar box guitars, alone they're so expressive. A little delay and reverb just to dress up the sound a bit. This thing has a hell of a crunch distorted!
Wow, mate I love this track.
This sounds ethereal.
I think great mind think a like

Thanks Jamid, it's basically just a test run, soundtest trying out a newly built guitar. It needs a little fine tuning still (and a bit more practice as I usally play on a 3 string with lighter gauge strings) but I'm happy with it. Ethereal is a good word, I was thinking of a burned out post apolacalyptic wasteland with a lone survivor seeking shelter traveling along a dirt road just out of range of the zombies nearby but within earshot. I wanted to be sure I got something up for the Halloween thread this year! More to come. Off to check it out now :D
So your a school teacher, I'm an elementary school custodian, I see the apocalypse!! Thanks Danke, I just finished the guitar Saturday so I could bring it to a luthier show Sunday where I was one of 2 cigar box guitar luthiers showing. Talk about raw that's why I called it lo fi ;) its strung with the lower 3 strings Earnie Ball Mammoth slinky 12 gauge, I have to look to tell you the exact string gauges used but its like 100 on the bass 62 on the E 52 B and 48 E, strung heavy for that bone rattling bass. Wait til you hear it distorted.

So I deleted a private link and decided to upload this track here. The quest was to catch the old-school vibe of detectives of the 50s-60s in the track\loop for 30-40 seconds.
Any way job was done. It is recorded fully live on real instruments, about 3 hours of composing and recording.
Description : Kay - Influenced by memories of Cleo Laine and her own feelings that jazz seemed to be a 'bit of everything happening at the same time', came up with this Idea. Oli used some old fashioned lofi samples and both created this cool moody song and put it through some analog gear to give it some grease. Thanks to GoodSan and Jackruss for the loops and Danmed for his Sax.
Description : This beat features all the lofi/chill essentials. Vinyl? Check! Rain sounds? Check! Sad piano with drum beat? Check!
