Hi MrNomad,
I will keep my comment short(er) on this one: lot of words already spent.
1:52 this section is the quintessence of MrNomad.
If I was ever going to join the "sound like somebody else" contest I would definitely choose this as my inspiration for a MrStaticNowolf song :-)
Now, while this sentence might not hold true for everyone, this is what I really like in your music: here we have a powerful chorused bass which builds some "liquid" lines, on a simple yet solid drumbeat, with the guitar as main actor, taking the liberty of "jumping" from beat to beat in a kind of self-indulging but very interesting manner.
That said, I of course liked a lot all the rest of the song.
Only exceptions may be:
- the synth around 8:30, a bit too "pop-ish" for this context, but we can consider it a "divertissement" and then it has all the right to stay here
- not a big fun of the laser-drome around 10:00 ... but the killer guitar/bass riff that follows makes me forgive everything.
The level of your compositions is very high.
Still waiting for the official announcement of a Nomad's album coming out.
I may even be willing to spend some of my hard earned money to buy it :-)
Take care,
Domenico
1:52 may be quintessential me. That guitar riff was the foundation for the grooving here. Before I came up with it, I just had that chillout intro, which was a leftover from my drumless, romantic cinematic track Visible Aura.
That track had no drums so I decided the continuation of its leftover parts should get back to my usual drum-obsessive grooving mode.
" taking the liberty of "jumping" from beat to beat"
Yes, I like the movement of the guitar around the beat. It's mostly three finger-plucked chords (plus some other fills) but is all about how I move around the simple drum groove, with fat synth bass pumping away underneath.
No problem you didn't like the 8:30 trance lead. I had to include it as it really inspired me when working out where to take the second half of this. I loved the sound of the bass guitar with the lead trance and I realised I could make some sort of unusual version of delta blues trance, which I think I've done.
As it inspired me so much, I wasn't going to get rid of it. I've tried to control the filtering so that it doesn't sound too cheesy or "pop-ish". I think it's a surprise in the track and you know I like to do that.
Same goes for laser stuff around 10:00. I don't love that sound but think it takes the track somewhere interesting and new for me.
It's hard to keep coming up with new and interesting tracks (I'm trying to make a piece of music unlike any other almost every single time) so don't be surprised if I sometimes do slightly weird stuff. Or choose some sounds you don't like. That's got to happen sometime.
However, I try not to include something purely for intellectual reasons ie "Oh, it's not a very good sound but I was just trying to show I can also make a bit of trance". I try to only keep things I think sound good (I trust my musical opinion) or do something else with them if they just don't fit the track I've first tried them in. You could say that all sounds have their place, right?
" the killer guitar/bass riff that follows makes me forgive everything"
That's just one distorted bass guitar. Didn't need to double it up with a guitar part though the 1:52 clean guitar does return very near the end of the track.
I don't like that distorted bass riff as much as I first did. Not sure why.
Thanks for your continued support and praise. I try to keep the standard high though it's hard so best if I don't think about it too much as it can place too much pressure on me. Better to just free my mind and create with no expectations, for no purpose other than making something cool and unusual.
Yes, I've produced many albums in the past couple of years so much get round to turning them into real, publicly available albums. Lots of little things to go back and fix in various tracks plus the problem I always have of great mastering.
You'll get some Nomad albums some day, I promise. A heavy one, an electronic one, a blues one, a jazz/funk one and so on...
Hi MrEvan,
Good track (as usual).
I really like the bass work in the initial part: it has some "melodic" properties, which one would not expect from such a driving bass line. Good!
The tempo changes are "spectacular": this is one of the most difficult things to "plan on a DAW" and in this case they sound so natural. Very Good.
marimba... now this is original, but it works very well.
I am not so fond of some synth sounds (e.g. 2:20) but this is a matter of taste.
The final bass riff is really "powerful" ... I love when the drums go away and the bass gains the "front position" (2:26)
Drumkit sounds a bit "fake": using a stereo spread plugin may help (as per MrNomad suggestion...after he pointed this out I started using it more on my tracks and in some cases it really improves things, but your mileage may vary here...)
Again: GREAT TRACK!
Ciao, Domenico
PS: I would have downloaded it if download was allowed.
"The tempo changes are "spectacular": this is one of the most difficult things to "plan on a DAW" and in this case they sound so natural. Very Good."
Thank you. Like I mentioned to Mr. Nomad, I just let the part I had play out and when it went to silence, I played some palm-muted guitar hits and got the tempo(down 20bpm), cut and changed the Tempo Track, and was able to turn on the click and play from the verse into the chorus very naturally. Getting the tempo let me set the tempo track and then the click followed it. Kinda hard to explain the process because I wasn't really paying much attention at the time.
I will address the drums soon. Thank you again for your feedback and honesty. It is the most important aspect of this site for me. I appreciate you.
Wow. You have a very interesting voice.
Good song: your vocal part is by far the best thing here. The loops are "brutal" and they work well together, but your voice is really outstanding.
Ciao, Domenico
PS: I read you are a Type-o-Negative fan. We have all their albums at home (my wife was a big fan)
I think that Black-no1 is probably the best goth-rock song ever written.
And I see some traces of Peter Steele's in your vocals.
You have the same way of building vocal melodies which contrast the music (and you work in the "deep" zone, the same as he used to do).
Now you have to learn to play bass ;-)
PPS: Of course I cannot forget to send a thought to one of the most inspired musicians our planet has ever seen.
Hopefully Peter found some peace.
Hi Mr Ether,
I join the others in welcoming you.
And I cannot help saying that this is a real gem.
I don't know anything about EDM but I really enjoyed this track. As stated by DjSLT with such a slow track everything must be carefully handled to keep such level of clarity and complexity.
And you really did an impressive job here.
Liked it. Liked it a lot.
Ciao, Domenico
Nice warm sounds. I am always surprised (and pleased) to hear some real synth-sounds.
Little track that works very well with the picture.
Ciao, Domenico
This is a very well made "pop" track.
The bass is a bit in the background, but this fits well the song.
The work on the guitar chords is very convincing. Well done!
Keys are also a bit "in the back": they are more a carpet for the vocals than a real "solo melody". By the way, I like them a lot (good work from your friend Paul).
Drums are also good: maybe the open hi-hat is a bit overused in the section around 3:30 (but this is a minor thing).
The only possible improvement I see, you could work a bit on the levels of the different guitars, but this is something you will need to define once you have the vocal part done.
I think this song deserves a *good* vocal part.
Liked!
Ciao, Domenico
To be truthful the mix is just a rough, at the time I was deep in other
projects...
And have sense remix it but thought, this was good enough for playing
on site...Why give the Master away...
Shame on me for having not listened to this before.
This is a wonderful song!
I really like the "scratch-like" build up on the keys (1:04 we hear it for the first time).
Nice work on the bass, simple but very effective.
Piano is outstanding... and of course the guitar is my favorite here.
You have a killer sound (I know...I have already told you several times...but I really like it)
Loved it...it's a pity that we cannot download it: you need to make an album of your music soon.
Ciao, Domenico
I liked this track a lot.
My personal highlights:
- the powerful bass riff (seen first time 0:17)
- the overlay of instrumental (loop?) with the choir
- good use of the "harp" sound, to build an additional layer
What maybe could be improved:
- the sound used for the melody starting at 0:50
(I am not so fond of this very synthish sound, but this is completely a matter of taste...I am sure others will love it)
Overall: Great track! Liked it a lot.
You have a great talent ... but you probably already know it :-)
Ciao, Domenico
What to say... this is simply perfect!
Loved everything: wonderful voice and wonderful musicians put together a very good song.
Special mention to the outstanding guitar work, but everything is really on the highest level.
Thanks for sharing it with us!
Ciao, Domenico
You had me at the word "suite" ... I like the idea of several movements that belong together. Typical concept for progressive rock but why not export it to other genres as well?
Coming to the music...
- The first part, the Ground Basse, works very well.
I like this syncopated keys "fighting" against the flowing bass. Only remark: I would raise a bit the level of the bass and if possible, use a more "grinding" sound.
- Second part, The Blues.
What can I say on the organ? really beautiful.
I like the sound and the light bluesy mood. Liked it.
Of course the piano is also good, but the organ is
my favorite (strange: I usually prefer the piano,
but I like too much what you played on the organ here).
Also the drum loop works very well.
- Third part, One Step Closer
Again, nice syncopated keys, but this time in an
almost "industrial" context (due to the drums).
Not so fond of the special fxs running in the background.
Again ... you know how to play these keys :-)
Liked a lot the solo going on.
Light and perfect for the atmosphere.
Special mention for the bass sound: I like it, few notes
but in the right place. Good.
- Fourth part, Nuclear Sunset
This is now something totally different.
Strange pads at the beginning (maybe the looping point
could use a better "cross fade" at 9:33)
Weird, but hey,
we are going for a nuclear sunset, arent we?
Around 10:30 the track really gets "chilly" with nice
pads and good work on the piano
(I would be curious to hear this piano line with an
echo... a huge echo set on 1/4 and lot of feedback...
not sure it would work, just curious).
Probably you could also make the ending a bit longer,
but I assume that at 12:07 you didn't want to extend it
too much.
So the final question: is this really a suite or are these 4 tracks assembled together?
Hard to say. I personally think they could work as single tracks but I see how you wanted to offer the listener a different experience by abutting them to form a single song.
And of course I also recognize common elements across the 4 parts: your keyboards playing could be seen as the fil-rouge that connects the various movement.
It's a bit feeble as link, but you are the boss and you decide what has to be done :-)
Final word: LIKED!
I am happy I decided to listen this.
Ciao, Domenico
PS: be ensured that the fact that you recently commented one of my tracks doesn't play any role in my post.
I am *always* looking for new music here, even if I have no "featured track" to promote. And I always try to be as honest as possible with my comments.
Thanks a lot Domenico for nice words. I appreciate that. Yes, there's a problem with the 'suite' label in here - honestly it is just my way to post more of my current work on looperman. Agreed, the tracks are different (and the last one stands out for sure). I think I have uploaded one better and much more consistent suite some time ago. The pieces were made almost in one take and shared the same sound image. Here it is just a compilation of my current work from last 2 weeks. Basically looperman it is a nice place for posting single tracks not the full albums.
I agree that the first 3 songs are quite similar combining the e piano playing with ezdrummer grooves. Nuclear song is based on the Am7FM7 progression from midisparkss snippet. I do not make any so called illustrative music and that nuclear title is from midisparks as well. I think I managed to blend loops much better and quite smoothly on my other tracks. Here I was looking for a proper chord progression from the midisparks audio so it is just a weird combination of an ambient and some strange jazzy piano chillout.
Actually Ive made already a song adding delay effect to the piano line, I know it may sound quite chilled or just interesting when played in a real time even. This is some nice concept.
I am happy you had a chance to listen to my current work. I enjoyed your track as well.
Thanks again for such a nice and detailed review! All the best to you, Alex
What a nice surprise to see a new track from our Dark Lion!
And a superb song!
I already said it some time ago, your voice is warm and well suited for these sad melodies. Liked it a lot.
Kudos to Megapaul for the gtr solo: perfectly fitting the mood!
And as usual, the Darkreine touch in the mixing/production is a guarantee for good taste.
An instant classic!
Ciao, Domenico
Dear MrNomad,
So glad to see what you have done!
Definitely you have left your comfort zone here!
Let's go to the details...
- Riff ~0:40 is really great! You are a real bad boy :-)
- at 1:20 we get some "weird" stuff... and then the "synth bass" with some typical "Nomad's" drums. This is more in line with your usual music. Good.
- Solo 2:25 is working very well. Sweet I dare to say.
- The choir part works well.
- The rhythm change at 3:55 is genius. Loved it!
- At 4:14 the part I liked the least... not bad but sounds a bit "forced" (compared to the high quality of the rest of the song).
- We can't have Metal without a double kick, and we get some around 5:00 (but not overused, good)
- The riff at 5:20 is a killer one! I think that lot of people would have made a 3 minute song only out of this single riff.
- Nice sound at 6:15, it seems like someone breathing (gtr?) disturbing at the right point.
- Tapping? is it tapping at 6:48? (OK, probably hammer-on would be a better description but still unexpected from you)
Overall... a great tribute from one of the best minds to one of the best minds around here.
Standing ovation!
Damn, I already wrote you a good, long reply but seem to have forgotten to post it and now I've lost it. Got to type it all again.
Yes, bad boy guitar riffage at 0:40. Quite simple 2/3 chord thing though some of the fills at the end of the bars are a bit more difficult.
1:17 the weird stuff you're hearing is almost exactly the same as the first 40 seconds. It's a cutup mixture of synth bass and bass guitar. Except, for the drop down into the quieter stuff, the distortion has been removed. I'm very pleased that it works both quiet and heavy. Not sure how many people would recognise that they're the same thing.
Yes, guitar entering around 2:14 is more my regular sort of blues grooving. I'm much more comfortable doing chillout blues grooving than metal riffs.
Choir voices are maybe the standout interesting element in this and make it much more than your average metal instrumental.
3:55 rhythm change? I think you mean 3:50. There I'm just adding the fatter metal kit on top of the kit that you've heard in most of the chillout middle section. All part of fattening things up so that we can ease into some proper heavy shit.
4:14 not sure what's happening there that you don't like. Maybe you mean the very low choir voice on 4:17.
Yes, killer riffage at 5:17 - seems to be a popular section with people. Good playing but made better with some little edit cheats that make it much more interesting and groovy.
3 min track of that sort of playing is possible but I think you'd need vocals to stop it getting boring.
6:15 interesting sound is one of the previous choir vocals run through some interesting rhythmic effects. So, sort of like breathing.
No tapping at 6:48 - just hammering-on (trills). Really easy to play. I'd quite like to do fast tapping but I can't seem to manage it. I only do tapping occasionally in tracks and it's not really the fast metal type.
See 1:07 part in this recently uploaded track for some groovy guitar tapping.
Great trippy song. Enjoyed every second of it: cool vocal part with one of the "simplest yet greatest" psy-sensual beats here on the looperman.
Great work Nightingale!
Ciao, Domenico
PS: thanks to MrValve for pointing this in MrNomad's forum's thread.
Very smooth and chilly.
Enjoyed it: my personal highlight are the guitars, the jazz one (~1:45) and the more funky rhythm one that follows (~2:25) and opens a very interesting more "complex" section of the track.
The synth-bass sound is "on-spot".
Well done!
Ciao, Domenico
PS: big thanks to MrNomad for pointing this out in his forum thread!
Many thanks for taking the time to check out the track and your compliments. Actually, most credits go to the "real" musicians like Franco Quadroni and Slap Johnson. Without the solo´s it would be just another little chill out track. So you can imagine how happy Looperman makes me all the time :-).
The bass sound was quite a puzzle to be honest. I got some feedback on the first try and that really helpd me in creating the perfect sound to lead this track.
And yes, many thanks to Nomad for creating the extra platform and to Promenade for listing my track!
Liked the energy in this simple (yet not boring) track.
Good choice of sounds and well mixed.
The bass line is a bit "obsessive" with the two notes repeated over-and-over-again, but this is not a bad thing: it makes the song "darker" and I think this was your intention.
Beautiful trumpet solo.
Overall, I song I liked.
Ciao, Domenico
PS: I have to thank MrNomad for pointing me to this little gem.
Thank you for listening and commenting on this track! I think it sums up nicely what this song is all about and it also confirms my opinion that sometimes less is just more. I’m glad you liked it. Thx und Servus
I like finding these old gems hidden in the Looperman archive...
I listened to this after hearing Psychotropic's version: your version is more a "song" in the classical sense. MrPC has "spread" some jazzy-feeling over it, which provided a completely different result.
I love both versions!
Well done (but I was expecting nothing less by our MrPJB!)
Ciao, Domenico
it took me 10 seconds to fell in love with this beauty.
"understated" jazz works perfectly with this pella.
Well done!
PS: I am a big fun of what Erik Truffaz did with rappers in Bending New Corners, I think your work is at a similar level.
Never understood why we don't have *more* of this! It works so well!
You are right, no fancy "solos" here.
But I think this is exactly what a musician should always do (or at least try it): giving the song what the song needs.
And this piece of music works beautifully!
Maybe the ending could be improved, but beside that (minor thing) this song is a real masterpiece.
Ciao, Domenico
Superb work delivered by the rythmic section.
...and the train in the ending, I am sure it is a direct connection to the barbary coast ;-)
Love your bass tone.

All the best to you, Alex
on I m Lost by Darkreine
And a superb song!
I already said it some time ago, your voice is warm and well suited for these sad melodies. Liked it a lot.
Kudos to Megapaul for the gtr solo: perfectly fitting the mood!
And as usual, the Darkreine touch in the mixing/production is a guarantee for good taste.
An instant classic!

Thanks again for the standing ovation for one of my heaviest ever tracks. Might even be first track on my heavy music album.

Thanks to GramoChopin for pointing this out in MrNomad's forum's thread.
on Coffee at Angeliques by DrvanLansberg
And yes, many thanks to Nomad for creating the extra platform and to Promenade for listing my track!

on After Midnight by Pillow
Good choice of sounds and well mixed.
The bass line is a bit "obsessive" with the two notes repeated over-and-over-again, but this is not a bad thing: it makes the song "darker" and I think this was your intention.
Beautiful trumpet solo.
Overall, I song I liked.
Ciao, Domenico
PS: I have to thank MrNomad for pointing me to this little gem.

on Fire In The Air by Planetjazzbass
I listened to this after hearing Psychotropic's version: your version is more a "song" in the classical sense. MrPC has "spread" some jazzy-feeling over it, which provided a completely different result.
I love both versions!
Well done (but I was expecting nothing less by our MrPJB!)

"understated" jazz works perfectly with this pella.
Well done!
PS: I am a big fun of what Erik Truffaz did with rappers in Bending New Corners, I think your work is at a similar level.
Never understood why we don't have *more* of this! It works so well!
on Poison Of Love by PsychotropicCircle
But I think this is exactly what a musician should always do (or at least try it): giving the song what the song needs.
And this piece of music works beautifully!
Maybe the ending could be improved, but beside that (minor thing) this song is a real masterpiece.
