Well, I can't even come close to giving the kind of technical advice you got from Crucethus. And, I'm the last one who who'll be commenting on how to improve a mix. Mine are usually kind of muddy I think. Its a lot of work to place each instrument in its unique position within the sound spectrum and set pan positions and use reverb etc. to position things in the soundstage. Not to mention ensuring interest through dynamic range. But, if I had any advice it would be to take a look (listen) to the lower frequency range in the track. I think you could clean it up a bit, separating the frequency range for the kick and the bass in particular. There was kind of a continuous "booming" sound and things weren't as clean and distinct as I think they could be. Generally, I liked the track quite a bit, though. I have tried and failed many times to make a track like that. :)
The thing about making music is that the more you learn..the more you realize you know jack shit about prodcuing hahaha...At least that is what I found out for me. So many things to consider. But after watching a lot of videos and trial and error you become better babyste by babystep. Glad Im not the only one :p
Now this is an excellent track, Max. Great mix. Kept my interest all the way through. I have no idea whether it is trap or whatever. I can't keep the genres straight, I just know what I like, and I really liked this. Good job!
Hi Eric thank u so much!
Its always difficult for me to chose the right genre and I agree with u in the end what matters is if we like or not!
Happy u enjoied!
This is definitely one of my favourites! Great feel. For some reason it reminded me of Lou Reed. You have a very expressive voice and the backing tracks are really interesting. This one in particular. Minimalist. Nice work!
Tommy: Used some snippets of your vocal in a demo track I just posted. Not finished. Needs a complete vocal to replace all the organ an synth parts. (Hint, hint!) :)
Used a portion of this track in a demo backing track I just posted. Hope you aren't offended, Tommy. Might not be your cup of tea, but I think your voice sounds great. Fits really well. Here's the link: https://www.looperman.com/tracks/detail/175551
Quite the opposite of being offended, I put all clips/songs up here so that people use it as they please, but it's always nice to be given a heads up. And the music is definitely my cup of tea, very summery and clean, and even quite evocative.
the first thing that attracted me to this track is that the waveform display showed a great deal of dynamic range. And, generally not flatlining at the max. In other words, indicates that this might just be something different. I was right. Crucethus and Orlando are absolutely right. I truly special piece of music. Imaginative. Never predictable. A really good mix with everything having its place in the spectrum. From a music and a technical point of view, really nice work, Alex.
Thank you for listening and nice comment! Yes, it is different and the waveform representation is quite small but also this track is very complex regarding to instrumentation. Basically my intention was to keep the 'natural' dynamic range and to get the best sound quality from the instruments as possible. Most of the layers were made on Roland hardware synth - I also compressed and somehow 'expanded' the sound of many single tracks so they have enough power at the start already, regardless of the low gain levels of the final mix. That section with keys and clavinet, for example, was added later but I think I found a good balance inbetween different areas of the track. I mastered it only very slightly, it is barely noticable. Just wanted to get the good quality sound that would be also pleasant to the ears, most of my tracks are not mastered to the standards.
I am glad you liked what I did.
Alex
Hey man thanks for stopping by and taking a listen. Comments appreciated. Have to admit was my most difficult to put together and finding the right loops and putting the solos together to keep that feeling. Just released all my songs through CD baby so stop over to filaofsoul.rocks and grab a copy. Will be releasing my first tune in two years here in a few days so look out. Again Thanks!

Never saw the Temptations live, but I did see the Four Tops! Great groups. Fantastic music. This is really nice echo of that era.
Yes, a lot of current music isn't all that inspiring, but there still are some really good musicians out there making the real stuff. Just watched the video of the Tedeschi Trucks Band tribute to Joe Cocker, on Youtube. Leon Russell and other alumni from the Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour.
Susan Tedeschi is a remarkable singer and her husband, Derek Trucks is, well, an inspired musician. And, from what I've seen of him in interviews, not full of himself. Dedicated to making good music. There's good music out there still, but a bit harder to find I think.
Very challenging, but really well done, Scott! One of my favourite pieces. Never actually played it when I studied piano, but your take on it makes me want to give it a try! I thought the drums worked fine, by the way. Very tasteful. I had no idea it was written in 9/8 time. I thought the chord progressions were hard enough to handle, but 9/8!!!!
:) thx Eric, ah so you have family over my way :) yeh wasnt sure where i was going with it but thought "ach" why not and tried different ideas from various genres Eg looked at the trumpet idea from funky house type works/took my beat idea from sort of breaks/crunk/breakbeat and constructed in an experimental style :) Glad so many have been here to have a play of it and very happy you guys have passed by to say what you thought :) thx again!
Very nice track, Scott. Tasty guitar work and really liked the Hammond part. Male vocal was very good. Drumming, as usual, was excellent. Makes a real difference to have live drums.
Just had to comment on this track, Mr. Word. I really enjoyed it. It is a great backing track from Danke and your rhymes are, as I am quickly learning, intelligent and engaging. I am VERY impressed.
thanks again, Eric. i really appreciate the feedback and the compliments. i'm really happy you took the time to check out some music in a genre you really don't normally go to. it makes it even more fulfilling to know that i can capture a wider audience.
and thanks again to Danke for the inspiration. Bless.
I'm not really into rap, but I was fascinated by this track and really enjoyed it! I see that you are planning to remove some of your tracks. Be sure to put this one back up if you do take it down for rework. The positive response you've received is well-deserved.
thanks so much for taking the time to listen, as well as understanding and respecting the vision. this one is not coming down any time soon. i've gotten nothing but great feedback.
OK, I liked the track a lot. I agree it probably could be improved by adding a bass to it. Doesn't have to be really prominent in the mix. If this were my track, I'd try just following the root of the backing chords with a single note baseline, with the bass mixed down so that it doesn't complete with the BD.
If it were my track, I'd experiment to see if using different sounds for the backing chords and the strings part might bring something different to the track. i'm not crazy about the sounds, but I tend to like fairly traditional R&B instrumentation. Those are just my reactions.
I do like the track and I agree with centralsdev that it would be really interesting to hear an acapella laid on it.
Really, alividlife? You hate the track? Well, I'm not into anime but I definitely liked the music. Interesting blend of oriental sounds and scales with western foundation, particularly the drum part. Kept me interested for the entire track, with the changes you introduced. Nice work.
Just listened to this one as well. I am astounded at what you were able to do with an iPad. Yes, I can tell that your writing and performing skills have improved, but this is a really impressive track on its own. Keep 'em coming! (But, don't neglect your school work.) :)
Kyle: I really enjoyed this track. Loved the acoustic instruments. I don't know why exactly, but the song reminded me a bit of stuff from The Band. Like danke, I thought you would be introducing drums when the cymbals came in, but it really was much more effective without drums, so good decision there. But the cymbals sounded great in my headphones. Whole track sounded great, actually. This was a please to listen to. I haven't posted anything since September, so I know where you are coming from. Very nice that you got this one finished and up on Looperman. Thanks.
Hey, Rico. Really nice spirit in this track. Made me smile listening to it. Very tasteful melodies. Yes, mix needs work, but actually I enjoyed it a lot just as it is. Frankly, I'm not sure about adding vocals to this one. I think it stands on its own as an instrumental. I'll be watching to see what develops from it in the future. Definitely worth the investment to take this one further.
Hey Eric,
I'm glad you enjoyed the melodies! I smiled the whole time making this track, so I'm glad that that same emotion is projected in the music. I am going to get epic to sing over this and might release an instrumental as well as a vocal mix to this. Be sure to check out my sound cloud for both!
I agree with the comments on the mix and mastering. Frankly, I'd have preferred to hear this with acoustic guitars backing I think. And perhaps some "interesting" additional instruments like a trombone, or accordion, or .. I don't know. I'd experiment to forge a new sound. I like the song. I thought the rap worked well. I wasn't crazy about the "wall of sound" on this one. Based on the other two tracks you've posted here, I'd say that you definitely have upped your production chops. If you still have the audio tracks from this one, I think you should consider tackling a re-make some time in the future. I'm currently reading the book by Ken Caillat, the audio engineer who produced the "Rumours" album by Fleetwood Mac. They worked and reworked their tracks many times over and some of them changed significantly from the original versions recorded in their initial sessions. I'm guilty of getting fixated on my first attempts at tracks and not making the hard decisions to just dump a drum track or bass line that really isn't working. Or, not dropping all the faders down to null and re-starting a mix from scratch. You and your brother have got something really good going on here. Keep on pushing yourself for excellence.
One of my favourite Christmas songs! I'm a traditionalist I guess. I really don't like it when artists start getting really inventive with these classics, especially the jazz musicians who think that just because they can find an inventive chord progression that bears no resemblance to the original, it makes sense to inject it into the song. Your track was tastefully done. Respectful of the music. Vocal was excellent. Were you the male choir? I enjoyed it thoroughly. Fine musicianship. If I had been able to download it, it would have added it to my Christmas Music playlist, which as far as I am concerned, contains only the very best! :)
DG: No, I think you should do the expansion of this track. First, you apparently do have a longer version in the works and second, I've hit a bit of a dry spell in terms of creativity for several months now, so I am not confident that I would actually get anything accomplished. Better for you, as the composer, to take it further. That being said, I still would like to collaborate with you on something in the future -- once I get things back on track.
