Thanks, Kayos. I think this is probably the best piece of work I've ever been involved with. I really like the idea of doing collaborations, but I'm afraid I often fail at them. Not quite sure why. Can be tricky. Worked out well in this case with Salve, although it did take me a very long time to get the track put together. He was more than patient with me. :)
Hi, Paul. Thanks for the encouragement! I just checked out Craigavon on Google Earth. Not too far from Belfast, where is where my family originally came from. :)
Really enjoyed this, great production elements in the intro and the little drop. All the sound has a ton of texture and there are a few little ear candies I quite like. Thanks for sharing this here!
-BN -._.-
Thanks, BadNode. Took a while to figure out where I wanted to go with the track. I think I need to refine the mix a bit, though. Some of the ear candies are, I think, buried a bit too much.
Very good track. Yes troubling times definitely. Seems a bit like the perfect storm at the moment and the near future. Will have to check out the movie too.
Thanks, Zootman! Yes, definitely check out the movie. For me, it was like stepping into another world. Interesting to visit. Not a place I'd be comfortable staying in, though. :)
Hi, Richard. Thanks for the feedback. So, I agree with you on the vocals. I can take NO credit for those. The lyrics and melody are entirely the work of Salve. It was a really good collaboration, but it took over a year for me to get that track put together, and then I still needed help from Wytse to get the mix right. Worth all the effort, though.
Thanks for the positive feedback on the track, TheFrenZ. I listened to it last night for the first time on my monitors. Had only used my headphones previously. It generally has a Phil Spector "Wall of Sound" sound to it and you can see from the waveform display on LM that I pushed the output level way up into a hard limiter. That's very unusual for me. I usually try to keep each instrument/sound in the mix quite distinct and always try to maintain a lot of dynamic range in the output. It sounds a lot better on my headphones than it does on my speakers. Might need to not be so lazy next time and test it on a variety of systems. I usually do that, but did not this time.
Thanks, Oli. This was unusual for me. Kind of an experiment. I typically will use midi drum patterns in my tracks, but rarely use loops. I usually play everything else using my controller keyboard. Was interesting also to limit myself to only loops and samples available stock in Logic Pro. Did have to go elsewhere for the vocal parts, but everything else was drawn from the stuff supplied with Logic.
Hello Eric, What a fantastic piece of work youre presenting to us! I think its definitely worth watching this film, which is excellently cast with Michael Kalkbrenner. The story it tellsabout the rise and fall, drug use, PMA, ecstasy, failed relationships of a fictional Berlin producer and DJ, his breakdown leading to psychiatric hospitalization, and his attempt to get his life back on track after his releaseis truly phenomenal.
Your song fits the film perfectly. Youve produced it brilliantlyan outstanding achievement!
I broadly share your thoughts on the current global events and their comparison to 1935. I am also afraid of these unfolding developments. It has never been good for the world when powerful propagandists have believed they could control it. This has always led to worldwide sufferingnot just in 1935, but also in earlier periods of human history. Why have we not learned to prevent such things? Why do people keep believing these so-called strong autocrats, who never act in the interest of the people but always for their own material and psychological gain?
Thanks for the kind words. Truth is, I've never actually been to a club or to a festival of any kind. I love the music, but I suspect that one really needs to be immersed in the scene to produce it well. It is interesting to me that so many DJs actually make their own tracks. Berlin Calling was a really interesting. I didn't realize that Kalkbrenner was actually at DJ/producer until I researched him after watching the film. I thought he was an actor pretending to be a DJ! So, then, I was doubly impressed! I am relieved that the "message" I was trying to convey in the track was properly understood. I was a bit afraid the it might be mis-interpreted as the opposite of what I was feeling.
Thanks, Kayos2. I'm glad you like different. I had a lot of false starts and going down dead-ends making the track, but I guess that's not totally unusual. Didn't quite know what I actually wanted to do with it. I still have no real idea if it actually qualifies as "techno", which is what I was aiming at. One think I got reinforced when I watched the film is that, unlike pop, dance music can have long passages with little or no introduction of new elements as dancers/listeners lock in to the groove. I guess trance is theoretically a prime example of that. In my tracks I have typically not done that because I realize that they will never actually be played in a club or for dancing anywhere. But, with this track, since I was trying on purpose to make a German style techno track, I did change the production a bit accordingly.
Worries of an artist, transformed into a great song. You have done a very nice work with this song, ultilised the best way those loops from Logic Pro. I really liked it. Haven't seen the movie yet. I wish healthy and peaceful lives to all.
Best regards, Anthony
Hi, Anthony. Thanks for the kind words. I think it is very interesting movie. I sometimes think what my life might have been like if I'd decided to try to be a professional musician instead of a lawyer. I think I would have been a complete and miserable failure. I definitely make the right decision keeping music as my escape, not my job.
Oh, wow, Eric... very nice composition. I am also a big fan of Chicane. Very nice melodies and combinations. Great work! Also the reverb on the hats reminds me a little bit of Delerium ft. Sarah Mclachlan - The Silence (Tiesto Remix).
Cheers,
Fidiu
Thanks, Fidiu. I wasn't aware of Delerium, so checked them out on Apple Music. Nice stuff! Another really interesting group from Vancouver, my home town. I'm a big fan of Bob Moses, also originally from Vancouver. Must be the rain. :)
Eric. What a smooth movement you got here. Mix is spot on tight. You captured the heart of the genre and the listen was enjoyable throughout especially the synth work with the lovely vocals. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks, Mark. It was a fun track to make. Anytime I actually get something worth finishing I'm amazed. So many dead ends. :( So, even better if there's a wee bit of humour underlying the piece! I'm pretty sure, however, that Bailey (our cat) is not impressed! :)
Really great collaboration. I liked the song and the sound. The singer is excellent too. Very well done
Best wishes, Anthony

Yes, Anthony, Salve is really a very special singer I think. Not just a singer, but song-writer as well. I was aware that this track is not really the kind of music that Salve really prefers to do - Salve's taste I think runs more to Pop/RnB material. But, I think that this, somewhat more eclectic material, worked out well and Salve's vocal definitely made it into something unique, not generic.
Hello Eric
I can't say I know trance music but I really liked it. Wonderful variations in a complete, well-rounded song. Excellent work
Best wishes, Anthony

Thanks, Anthony.
There has been some (very polite) disagreement as to whether this track really is "trance". I temporarily changed the genre tag to "weird", but changed it back to trance when I removed the track from the "featured" list here on Looperman. I don't think it really qualifies as "weird". But, not exactly the usual trance track either. Ultimately, I don't think it really matters. :)
Mate, I don't care what anyone else has suggested for you as the way you should do Trance. This is epic. This might be the most creative soulful trance (Chill) tune you have ever made. The mixing is on point, I was captivated by the opening salvo. Chefs Kiss! You should be very, very proud of what you have made. Holding out that sub-bass at the end is genius as well. Fav'd and downloaded it. I immediately thought of this new artist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTP-H2c9MNQ
I haven't heard anything this creative and compelling Since Roxy Music's premiere album. What you just made is the future, and not the nostalgic past of trance. Bravo!
Thanks for the high praise, Steve! You really were the impetus for the track. Would have been very disappointing if you hated it! :)
I will check out the new artist you referenced. You must spend a reasonable amount of time listening, not just making music. You seem to know about a lot more contemporary artists in a lot more genres. I probably should do more listening as well, although it's great to have your guidance.
Hello Eric, although you have never been to a club, you have captured the atmosphere very well. The first sequence with the spoken word is unbelievably great! The transition to the second part with the continuation, the gentle sounds and the driving basic rhythm - fantastic! Then the return to the spoken word closes the musical circle in a wonderful way. The middle part could have been longer. Very well made club music. I can't say whether it is trance, but whatever it is, I like it a lot!
Best wishes, Manuela
I think there is a clear consensus in member reaction to this track that the middle section, which is really the only section that might qualify as "trance" is too short. I agree. I should have worked harder to expand it.
I think probably I should not have tagged the track as being "Trance" genre. Clearly, the structure and orchestration doesn't really qualify as Trance.
But, overall, I am happy with the structure and the way the spoken word vocals worked. I definitely do need to try harder to create a more fulsome trance track.
What a great collaboration. Cant fault anything here, what a journey.. Thank you :)

Thanks for the positive feedback, Tiltedbeats. I do listen to the track once in a while and each time I really appreciate what Salve did. A complex melody, well-developed and meaningful lyrics, an excellent vocal performance using a very inexpensive USB microphone. These really elevated the track to someting worth listening to. I was lucky to have Salve agree to collaborate on the track.
I agree with the comments about the unique structure of this track and have also taken on board your comments here and your earlier comments about struggling to produce trance in full. You may or may not take inspiration from the way I do it. The blueprint I generally follow for trance is to include 2 builds and drops in the track after an intro, with the outro (ending) of the track coming back to the intro...basically, after the 2nd drop sequence, there would be an altered version of the intro of the track for the ending. If you can get any value from that, fire away. When I first started, I used the above but only 1 build and 1 drop in the track...and looking back, I could see what was missing....round 2. Having listened to popular trance tracks in the mainstream, this method seems to be backed up there. Best wishes from the UK and good luck.

Thanks for the advice on making a trance track, Dean. I think I need to spend a bit of time listening to tracks and then have a go at following your advice. I appreciate your advice. It is, frankly, frustrating for me not to be able to do a credible job of creating the kind of music I really like. I've been at it long enough that you'd think I would have figured it out by now. :(
