on My Condition by toastedavalanche
I like it a lot T.A...sometimes the best things are those that are not overcomplicated by all the clutter we have at our disposal...that piano is superb...and a very nice/fitting jobon the vocals...with the wee touch of backing pads...about perfect to my mind...and I enjoyed the listen...(something that seldom occurs if I turn on my radio)...great job...definite fav..long enough to leave you waiting for more....

Cheers Tumbleweed.

I found myself over-thinking everything, even outside my music. So I thought it was time to do something simple and easy on the ears. Glad you enjoyed it.

on You Are Never Alone by Spivkurl
I`m never sure how to describe your music Spiv...its definitely unique, original and always creative...and thats not something we expect from commercial sources any more..but then your instruments themselves often sound unique and you have that mad skill in the way you are able to use them...this mix seems a bit minimal, yet it has everything it needs...but most importantly its just good listening and carries some kind of feel good familiarity...probably PJB`s description fits it best....well done Spiv...keep on....Ed

Spivkurl replied 11th Mar 2016 - 9 years ago
Thanks for your continued support Ed! I think the idea that I'm not a commercial source makes a big difference. I react badly when money and art are co-mingled sometimes! This is quite sample based, but a lot of the samples were of instruments I built or modified. I've been doing a lot of work in my temporary second studio in the kitchen upstairs, and I don't have all of my instruments up there. Soon the hardwood floors will be done for the lab and studio B, so I can move a few instruments in there... and free up some space in my main studio, as it's getting mind blowing at the moment. I found ti pretty minimal as well, but groovy and deep enough to wok. I really appreciate you taking a listen!

on Little Miss by ImproveWithError
Oh yeah...that guitar lick does stick in the head...classic kind of rock lick I recall well from days gone by...I really like this one Kyle..Your vocal is, as always, top notch and I definitely like that country-rock accompaniment you`ve got going...I`m just using some old Sony MDV600 cans & they are terrible on the low end (great for checking highs) so the bass sounds fine...if you need to unmuddy it a bit just try scooping our between 200-400 and bump it a tiny bit at 80...great track Kyle...rea;;y did enjoy it....Ed.

that organ around 1:08 is great stuff...genre doesn`t matter...its uniquely creative music lechina..and thats a good thing when so much of what we hear on this side of the planet is canned crap...its upbeat..bouncy...dancing music..its well produced...and it leaves you with a smile...well done...Ed

on To This River We Will Run by ScottB55
When its this good its not too long Scott..that vocal by Astrid is top notch (as is the way you produced and accompanied it)..I am definitely a fan of acoustic (even though I post less acoustic than I would like to)..so that is an extra treat...the electric bits give it a country vibe...might otherwise pass for more of a folk vibe...I really like it...I can understand why you wouldn`t want to take anything out..dont shorten it..I`m smiling after 6:12....Ed

ScottB55 replied 19th Feb 2016 - 9 years ago
Thanks so much, Ed. Also glad you don't think it's too long. I came very close to shortening it, but the comments changed my mind.

I, too, like acoustic and also don't do as much as I like. I've heard some of your acoustic tracks and enjoy them a lot.

Cheers,
Scott

on Roar Stone by StaticNomad
Yo Static...it does indeed "Rock"...I like the bass synth arp that introduces itself around 0:20...has a bit of a walking bass style that I have liked since I first listened to Chas`s bass line in the old Animals song "We Gotta Get Out of This Place".
Particularly like the extra fat distortion on the rhythm guitar (1:00)even though I don`t use it frequently..I think it was my Son`s buddies in a Canadian group called The Headstones that introduced me to it in their version of "I Smile and Wave" or some such title...
Around 1:45 I`m thinking the cool resonator guitar lines are more for effect than to relay a particular melody line, but I do love the sound of the thing...wish I owned one.
By 3:45..I`m still enjoying this in spite of the fact that I want to hear some key changes or a progression..but thats a consequence of my own playing, listening, composing habits I guess.
I wasn`t sure about it when I hit that transition around 5:00, but it ends up being an effective move from the hard rocking section to the mellower part with that cleaner sounding guitar (5:45) that I like..perhaps because it seems more melodic.
I think the louder mix suits the track..and the wav doesn`t have those flat ruler edges that symbolize death of dynamics so all is well with the world.....
Its well done Static..as is everything of yours that I have listened to..so for me its just a matter of musical taste the day I`m listening...got my rock fix for the day....Thanks
Ed
PS: have you ever used a program (free) called "Spear"...its getting really old ..its just 32 bit and only runs stand alone (so you have to render the music you use it on)...but it allows you to stretch individual frequencies on anything you load for some very wild results...I just tried it on this old PC I use on line..think I`ll load it on my music PC & give it a go.

Yo, Mr TWeed

Thanks for that software suggestion and it does look interesting. Only problem is that I don't have either of my two computers running Windows XP. Shame cos I'd try it out if I could run it.

"bass synth arp that introduces itself around 0:20...has a bit of a walking bass style"

Yes, it's pretty unusual in a rock track like this. I think it's quite behind the beat which is maybe why it seems like it's walking.

" extra fat distortion on the rhythm guitar (1:00)"

Yes - most of the track's guitar playing is actually recycled leftover resonator parts originally played with no distortion and then stuck through software amps. I'm quite proud of how I managed to use leftover stuff and layer it up and get it to work. So, I didn't do much actual rocking out on guitar here - it's very much a cut-up sampled job.

"1:45 I`m thinking the cool resonator guitar lines are more for effect than to relay a particular melody line"

I can hear quite a bit of melody there but maybe it takes a few listens to spot it. Again: more recycled old parts. I actually only have a cheap/mid-range resonator though have always wanted a proper ie expensive one. But they are really expensive so I just make do with a poorer tone and then put it through FX.

"3:45..I`m still enjoying this in spite of the fact that I want to hear some key changes or a progression"

There's lots of progression and changes in my music (maybe too many) but I'm sure you're talking about a key change, which I know you particularly love and do in every track. I'm still really bad at it and so don't do it too often.

"cleaner sounding guitar (5:45) that I like..perhaps because it seems more melodic."

Yeah, clean, funky little guitar part there that isn't necessarily in perfect time. Bass and drums underneath are nice too. A chillout, funky middle section before another onslaught of hard rocking returns, adding new riffs and progressions.

"the wav doesn`t have those flat ruler edges that symbolize death of dynamics"

I'm often quite happy with the look of my waveforms (I only really see them when uploading to Looperman) as I try to always have an interesting dynamic mix that is loud but not too loud. Lots of those dynamics are of course in the variations in playing and synth/drum programming. It's not just a mastering thing, as you know.

Thanks for the detailed thoughts.

Did a few collab tracks with a long time music friend a while back who is really the best at getting a 70s psychadelic vibe (and often without chemical enhancement)...We should have had you sitting in on the sessions Steve...hell...if you had just played this (the first part)we could have come up with all kinds of far out additions (oh I`m just hitting that part around 3:25...freekin awesome stuff...the roof has lifted & the walls have fallen down...its flying in a great place...I`m at the outro...and I don`t need to figure out whats happening...I`m just sitting here thinking what a great ride that was....is that normal??...haha...super track....Ed

on Someone is inside my head by Rhodesy
By the time I was just over a minute into this one I was looking for the fav button Rhodesy...agree with Cru`s comment on the bass...great..thoughtful arrangement...keeps the flow moving along nicely with the variations while sticking with the theme...great job on the guitar...I thought very seriously about buying a Blade when I bought my 91 Strat but had lived with the Strat too long to make the change....super track...enjoyed the listen...Ed

Thank you Ed! I found this song few years ago - it was an old calssic version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJkxFhFRFDA but didn't plan playing any latin piano music then. I always liked that song and the latin grooves. This tune is probably one of the most famous bossa jazz songs, beside of 'Corcovado' 'Aqua de Beber' 'One note samba' and others which I want to learn as well.

I will be recording more jazz standards and want to develop the stylistical playing. Thank you for the nice words and your continous support!
Best to you, Alex

Hi Ed thanks for comment, I love most genres of dance music and hadn't really done any trance for a while, then I came across the free vocal and was suddenly inspired! The kick drum and mix down is currently under remix after some consideration and earlier comments so I had a little play and a re evaluation and should be able to repost the finished product soon. Thanks for reviewing, will be sure to do the same.

definitely upbeat Dave...something we could use more of in this mid Winter...nicely done, although I think you could bump it up even more with some low bass ( or some sub-bass hits)....you should mark your tunes as "Featured"...I think you would get some good feedback...Ed

Thanks Ed, I appreciate your feedback as always. I am finally starting to get some more time to write and record more, so hopefully I can do at least one track per month. I have really been trying to concentrate on learning to mix and master my tracks better, which I think is one of the funnest aspects of the whole songwriting process. Thanks again for listening.

on synth X by promenade2239
You likely know that I am not much of a synth/keys player as for me its just a way of finding the backing music so I really appreciate what you have going here...any of the real synths I have owned over past years came with their own character and often included whatever noise was included with the actual sound generating process so I kind of automatically listen past that stuff...and I appreciate that you did the music the real way musicians have done it and brought their own special brand to or ears over the years...Keep doing it...its what makes the music you do unique...enjoyed the listen....well done...Ed

Hello Ed

Thank you for kind comment and I am happy you enjoyed listening!

I am academically trained keyboard player (classical, not jazz - still struggling to go beyond classical) so it is very natural to me to just play everything on keyboards. From that very special perspective, I would say, basically I hate creating music using just a mouse pad tweaking different virtual programms (which I used to do a lot anyway). Probably it is because I still believe that there is something (magical?) in real instruments, I do not know. Real instruments offer an instant reaction and they are realistically resonating objects ultimately...

I occasionally take a chance to record church organs in their natural environment (which is not always easy) and also want to record acoustic piano soon as well as maybe do some more realistic and progressive music sometime. It would be great to talk to you and discuss some details then!

Thank you again for all support you're giving me

Alex
