Definitely a song that wasn't in my head, but was revealed through the playing with the components. I've wanted to play with DSK Darkness Theory for a while, and found the excuse!

on Importing Hungry Ghosts by n0mad23
yeah man, this is what i was waiting for, the commercial and melodic n0mad23 with big hooks and....wait a second....rewind, that was a different song i think man..lol...wow, thought i would check this b4 passing out...very different track from your oeuvre...i like the beginning i think the most, kind of Weather Report like, only for those who know early WR, the first album especially with Airto Moreira on traps and hand and other types of percussion..that's some heavy stuff, he's probably my all time fave dude for percs..i like this piece man, a little bit of a different tangent for you and it compliments and perhaps provides the counter weight to your equilibrium sot to speak, now my dear Watson,...help...wait, wait...is it the Hound of the Baskervilles by chance...oops...wrong dimension Sean..anyhows..i like i like...

Funny how stuff goes, isn't it? This actually began with an experiment importing a live kalimba track (the sounds at the end) and upon discovering that I could make my kalimba sound like Balinese gamelan set things off. One thing leading to another. Still, it was inspired and only took me a few days to arrange then a single sit down to a live recording. Glad you dig my Halloween weirdness!

on Cantus Ranocchio by n0mad23
this is different from your other work guy, the frog/nature samples work really well and don't seem to overpower the track..i like how u bring in the groove and the ethnic percussion..at some point the groove seems to change a little bit and go even more into the pocket, the levels seem good, i need to hear this a few more times though to be sure..the transition/break towards the end is perfect with the return of the live ambient sounds...like it so far!

It's kind of a pairing with "Bonobo challenges the Electric Storm" in its use of field recordings. Yeah, the groove shift is the result of live bamboo jew's harp recordings that everything else is woven around - but I think it does what I set out to do. I now actually enjoy that part, as it really gives it a live, immediate sense in terms of listening. Glad you like it!

mmm mmm, nice man, this is reminiscient of some of the cutting edge futuristic electro hip hop that David Spradley, Ted Currier, both of whom I knew from Unique Recording days, and others who coproduced with George Clinton man during the 80's and 90's, i had a tape that i listened to alot with that Atomic Dog woof woof type of sh*t lol,"Some of my best jokes are friends.." ha..heavy mind bending synth sounds, back then stuff like Oberheims and Prophet 5's, 10's..PolyMoogs, Mini Moog's, Emulator...even though I'm originally a guitarist I've spent alot of years around synths..

yeah dude, this is hard, as always your sense of how to develop the production is on point, i'm always anticipating..where's he gonna go next, where's he gonna go next....one day man..one day! one day i think u and i will work on somethin' somethin' together..i think it's all about complementing one's strengths in a collab and not falling into the trap of overlooking the creative differences between the parties involved and focusing too much on the obvious possible similar strengths...always a good feeling after coming by your way bro and u know i've been a little busy bee as of the late ..lol

on I Love My Mom by JHolmes
this is obviously a labor of love with such meticulous preparation..there is something Philip Glass like about it but only a little i think! would really like to hear this again when more rested in the morning...i'm on a sort of funky hip hop crusade right now myself, but i'm also well versed in the classical and jazz disciplines and would like to hear your composition again when completed...then again is anything ever really completed?? i'll leave you with that...lol!!
thank you for sharing your work!

victormusic01x.....pondering all this technical talk but appreciating the outcome nonetheless
JHolmes
JHolmes replied Unknown
I actually just acquired a bunch of Philip Glass from my roommate, but haven't gotten around to listening to it yet. I'm channeling him on some unconscious level, I guess...

I feel like I've actually spent less time on this than I usually do, at least in terms of composition. I recorded most of the instruments on my first take, with minor adjustments to timing and occasional reworking of the parts by hand, leaving the note velocities as they were but changing timing/volume/volume ratios.

I appreciate the review. If you get any ideas on a fresh listen, please don't hesitate to share them.

man, that intro alone is worth the price of admission man...remember the byrne/eno we spoke about the other day, the intro sound coming back later on down the line reminds me of the way eno kept bringing this televangelist in and out of that crazy track on "my life in the bush of ghosts"...you definitely have come up with your own sound, a serious accomplishment my man...this is vying for first postion for me bro..."i'll be back..again!"

Yah know Eno's probably good to invoke here. You know I'm the obsolete tech guy, so I know my way around a bit. Ableton Live 7 LE is seriously crippled (but ultimately useful) you just have to think about things. What I finally figured out and then did this was to create the foundation of the song and export it, reimport it and add the necessary bit then. I love the MIDI mapping and triggering things live! Eno in the early days would dig my approach (imho). neoPrimitivism? Urban Tribal music? It's probably healthy than acting out my fantasy of shooting attack helicopters with my slingshot. Thanks for the fav!

Flavors are now really only hints, but it is what it is. I'm pleased. The only other Pop Song I've ever made was a total parody of the genre - a kalimba made from a garden rake mounted on the neckless body of a George Washburn acoustic run through an old MIDI reverse sample, with my spouse playing a collection of sticks arranged on the floor in wind-chime nonpatterns. Our friend played subtle electric guitar stroking silent notes and chords with a glass slide and twisting the volume up with his pinkie. His spouse was stroking fingers and fingernails over the skin of a large frame drum. Recorded on analog 4-track, we titled it, "Pop Song."

"Jungulation" is not that song.
