on LEAVING MOTOWN by Planetjazzbass
Seriously cool tune you've created here! The mix stood out right away as being an excellent example of knowing what you want and making it happen. Smooth and chill, but upbeat and full of dynamics!

I have very little experience on knowledge when it comes to motown or soul sort of music, but I can tell that this is a great nod to the style with your own added flair. Your bass playing, of course, fits right in with the style! Nice tone! A foam mute you say? Interesting.

One of the synthesizer arpeggiations there at the buginning totally reminded me of something I might design in a virtual synth. That's some sparkly stuff right there!

Well, I've got to go wash some dishes now. I'm glad I caught this tune, it's super fine! Fave!

on Snake Eyes ft Jimmy Stiles by theHumps
Very fantastic rock piece you two have created here!

The guitar is obviously a driving force here, but all aspects come together to make this such a potent song. I found your vocal work to be a bit out of the usual that I would expect on your profile, and in a very good way. Soon after they came in, I started thinking about Primus, or more specifically Primus songs which are not as much based around insane fretless classical style wandering bass solos, but more based around rocking out and making a lyrical point. I'm sure the rural twang in your voice added to this impression, but it was also the guitar parts which reminded me a lot of the style of Larry LaLonde.

This political climate is surely an interesting and frustrating state of affairs. The election year and the year since has finished the job of ruining my trust in our current system. I will most likely discontinue voting for federal officials until the electoral college is done away with. I can no longer consider myself a liberal, and that term seems to be more of an insult than anything now. I can barely see the lines between republicans and democrats, nor can I believe that things would be much different if things had turned out different in the election.

It's funny in a way... last month I got elected to our neighborhood association board as the "neighborhood development chair." I was to be a go between from the citizens to the government agencies (city council, parks board, etc...). The position lasted all of two weeks before I was forced to step down. In discussing neighborhood issues with some citizens, and then having several of my responses censored by other board members, I realized all at once that there was no way I could represent these people. They offended me, I offended them, I wanted nothing to do with their plans, and they wanted nothing to do with my suggestions. It all comes down to too many people who are not willing to be part of the solution, but are all too prepared to contribute to the problems they complain about.

Sorry, I guess your song just brought things up, which is a good thing! People need to start thinking and observing more deeply, rather than just letting everything get out of hand.

I really enjoyed the song my friend! Thank you for the DL! Big FAVE!

Thanks Spiv. Yeah, the political climate sure is a little crazy these days.

I know what you mean when you were describing your neighborhood political rise and subsequent fall. I told people not to vote in the last prez election because the candidates were lacking in believe-ability, honesty and integrity. As I am not a hypocrite, I couldn't bring myself to support people I don't believe in. Yet I was told it was wrong not to vote your conscience and to not vote. My conscience is clear and have no regrets not supporting any of the candidates yet I'm sure those people who scolded me are regretting their decision to support either candidate.

Thanks man, appreciate the comment and keep believing in what you believe in.

Cheers!

Very interesting style here, most especially the composition of the various parts!

To me, it sounds like a slightly more complex rendition of something that Savant might have done. I say this mostly because of the choice of sounds, as well as the arrangement style. Not meant as an insult in any way, as there was a time when I listened to Savant on a regular basis.

I do like the stripped down game style sounds on here, and they made it pretty fun to listen to. The field recordings were an interesting touch, though very subtle.

All in all a very enjoyable piece to hear! Nice work!

I was surprised to hear a song such as this when I hit play on your profile! Definitely not what I expected!

I found it to be a sort of timeless pop song in many ways, and that is meant as a compliment. It is possibly even pop enough to make it so I wouldn't listen to it unless it popped up on the radio (also rare for me).

This comment by jamid I found interesting - "Yet again wonderfully constricted and arraigned."

It may be simply a matter of difficult translation from a non english speaker, but this is something I would have taken initially as a bit of an insult. I should probably be less sensitive!

Seriously though, It was an excellent song. Though I have not heard the original, I can say that this is a cool remix!

Surprise, surprise ...... do you remember this old song - this is what you want and this what you get - ... just a joke. You know that i am mostly anywhere around the minimalistic, dark, hypno body wave, side of music. And sometimes i love to switch and do different stuff and in this case i loved the idea of doing a pop song/dance song and not a joe cramer song. Dan's song is way more "freaky" then this version but this version shouldn't be else "freaky" cause it should be a pure pop song. I tried to stand behind the idea of a pop song. How should or better say must a pop song be that even a joe cramer would maybe listen to it. And that is what you got :)

And you are right that you maybe a little sensitive (about Jamids comment) :) but i didn't realized it before you point it out - great

I am always happy to read something from your hand Spiv.
Nice to know that you invest some time into stuff i do, even when it is something like real pop music. Be sure the next one will be more a real joe cramer one.

stay tuned

on piece dOrgue by promenade2239
It is always a pleasure to hear your performance on these fantastic instruments that you have the chance to work with (and work on)!

I have lost familiarity with much classical music, and so the piece is not familiar to me. At the same time, it is an easy task to connect pieces such as this with what has become of music since it was written. Music may be broken and shattered, but it still retains something of what once was. People such as yourself who can help make the connection, are so important, both to music and to other aspects of life. Most of us have lost much of the connection, but you remind that it can be regained.

The quiet moments near the end are spectacular! The contrast in dynamics really does it for me, and makes me strain to hear the details (which I love in music).

I envy your skill at playing, as well as your opportunity to participate in this sort of performance. Wonderfully executed!

Thank you so much! I am happy you enjoyed the performance and this special and somehow unusual kind of recording!

There is a youtube channell containing educational videos presenting scrolling scores and I see this piece was posted there. I hope it will be interesting for you. Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukx-u-Q6Hes (and my video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL3qR9CEP9g ). I hope it will help to explain some details of the form of the entire piece. The outer sections are somehow 'melismatic' in a sense and of course it is a 'homophonic' or 'chordal' sort of writing. It is simply an arpeggiation of typical chord progressions from a baroque period.
The central part is a highly sophisticated polyphonic writing in vocal style for 5-voices. This is really a 'stilo antico' section Bach wrote which can also be given to a consort of violes for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUp6tbiuGqU so you can say it is an 'absolute' music-writing. The 'expression' of the organ sound possiiblities seem to be very limited if we compare it with the naturally expressive sound of Fretwork recording. Here I have to lead 5 voices in a linear manner not just hitting 'chords'. Playing and singing each voice separately helps a lot. This is a really a masterpiece in contrapunctal writing and you can find this kind of mastery in each piece from Johann Sebastin Bach. This is really why he is the greatest.
Fretwork recorded only the middle section and they ended it with a perfect candence (D7 - G). In original organ version the cadence is broken (resolution into a diminished chord). The tonal effect is incredible. Then the composition continue with a progression of a sequence of diminished and seventh chords and finally with so called 'pedal point' beforethe last perfect cadence.

Yes, I see there is much to think in details regarding this performance too but I am happy with this anyway and the quality will be much better as I perform more hopefully. Bach rarely gives any instructions of which organ sounds to use so the final result is always a licence of a performer:)

It's funny about grime and chill out being "opposites." Just out of curiosity, what makes you have this impression? I know some grime is pretty agressive, but songs like this are definitely very chill for an electronic genre.

The song definitely needs some low frequency signals to add range and potency, but as it stands it is a cool piece and well composed. Keep working on it, I'm eager to hear the results!

I'm not sure what it is for sure, but those vocals scared the cat!

Not what I expected, so I suppose I can see where danke was coming from about the voice. Maybe it would blend more if the rest of it weren't so crisp and brittle high end, you know tamed a bit.

It sure is a blend of styles in here! Confusingly original!

This is unexpected, and also a very welcome thing to hear. I was eager to visit your tracklist and hear what has been going on, and I was not disappointed!

Despite the somewhat modern vibes of the vocal parts, I can't help but make connections with The Cure while listening to this song. It is stylish, deep, dark, and complex in that sort of way. It is no surprise that we have become fans of each other's work, being both long time cure fans. When I returned to see the cure live last year, after a twenty year break, I could easily look around and know that those are my people. I could tell that we all valued the connection, and could also look into their eyes and know that they wanted to be left alone to enjoy the experience. I couldn't believe how many of us there were in this area, and sometimes I wonder where they all are. But enough about that!

The composition of all instrumental parts are very effective in conveying the feeling that you wanted to be heard in the vocal parts, at least to my ears/brain. It gives the impression of something that is so unpleasant that you don't want to admit to yourself that it feels good.

I don't know what else to say, except that I love the song! Thank you for sharing it!

Hey Spiv! Happy to read you!
you're right about our common fascination for this cult band, the cure. I realise that their work influence me a lot, especially the period around their brilliant trilogy "faith - pornography - seventeen seconds".
Last time i saw Cure in concert, it was at Bercy (france / paris) in 1996 and at the bataclan (paris - same year).
I thank Jozzua for this amazing flow. When i heard it, i said myself: here is the masterpiece of this track lol.

it's interesting to read what kind a strange feeling this track bring to you.May be because, usually, when we whistle it's because we are happy and in this track the sad atmosphere constrats with this aspect?

Thanks a lot Spiv for this personal feedback which is, you know it, very appreciate :)

As is often the case with your songs, the guitar part is definitely my favorite element. The tone and performance are both very pleasing and entertaining, while the composition of it does indeed give a chill feeling.

For some reason, the other elements remind me in a somewhat disturbing way of the stuff that came out around 1990. A lot of seasoned musicians were embracing the more new age, world music, ambient movement. At the time, I pretty much had enough of it, though it is not as annoying as it was then. Back then I was in rebellion, partly due to my age and the era, so it is not meant as a personal attack just some background.

The pads/strings or whatever were cool, though I guess I would prefer them slightly quieter in the mix. At times they seem to overtake everything with a lot of high frequency content. Maybe it would suffice just to remove some of the low-mid content to let the other elements shine through.

The drum sounds were cool enough, and would especially shine with some more variation. I fall prey to repetitive drums as well, so I understand completely!

Again, the guitar was the star here, and it is enough to make me want to hear it again!

Good stuff!

Damn this is awesome! I left the house for around three hours without my ipod or any other way to hear music... by the time I got home, I knew that music was one of the first things I needed, after feeding the cat. Your song is satisfying that urge immensely!

I absolutely hear the nod to B-52's in this track, and this feeling makes it all that much more enjoyable. In that way, and the possible DJ Shadow reference, this works for the "house" idea. I get frustrated with the preset genre specifications around here sometimes. I could see this place being more fun if we could customize... but then it would be like soundcloud where people put pointless or borderline coprophilic items as the genre tag for their songs.

To my ears, this is quality in composition and mixing. The tempo changes were wild, and I might describe them as "confusingly original" (which is what someone said about Iris-T-Shirt back in the day). Very cool choice of instrumentation, which twisted the idea of genre in the best of ways!

Thank you for sharing this cool track! Fave!

Concerning the genre, you're right about the customisation... but looperman webmaster can add more genre to the actual list, no?

on Burning in my soul by BLEEP
This is an unusual blend of genres for sure! I'm enjoying the listen!

I am by no means an expert on house, but this does not suggest disco to my ears either - possibly it is a bit slow for disco? The suggestion of New Wave also confuses me a bit... I don't know what kind of new wave these people are listening to, but it's obviously not the stuff that I live by! ha ha.

These things, of course, do not matter! What matters is that you are doing music that you want, and that we get to hear it.

The synth lines were awesomely composed. I found myself wishing for a more continuitous, and less plucky feel for some of them. That is probably just personal preference though, and my preferences are surely not those of the mass population! ;)

Had fun all the way through, and it was cool to hear something new from you! Have a good day!

Hello Spiv!
First i want to give you a BIG THANK YOU! in your comment on "lonely fears", you talked me about several bands whom "Primus".
Yesterday evening, i searched for this band that i've never heard before!
OMG, i saw their last concert at "the capitol theatre" (date: 10/29/17). The bass guitar player is a virtuose! Which masters and especially which technicality! it's unusual a band which is "built" around the bass guitar! i was impressed by this band! so thanks again for the reference i discovered!

i took note of your impressions about the synth lines. Need to work more on this track to perform it lol

This is a super groovy and ear pleasing track, my friend!

Obviously, the vocals will stand out in a song like this, partly because of your gentle treatment of them in the mix - However, I think your instrumental efforts are the real star! You have shown your multi-instrumental prowess, and the ability to DIY a band. I love to hear that in a song or album!

I also always enjoy hearing organ work in a song, and this seems like a comfortable home for an organ. I found the comment about crucethus have a B3 in his pocket quite entertaining. As someone who has pushed a Lowery console spinet home on the ice, I know how ironically funny this is!

The bass and guitar work is top notch, most especially for a bluesy, rock and pop influenced piece. They are mixed with style, and also stand out, each to be appreciated.

Very excellent work! Fave!

Very interesting and thoroughly entertaining song you're working here!

The vocals are quite cool, and not the usual for this looperman arena. I enjoyed the performance. The instrumental is also good in that early electronic fashion, most especially the composition as opposed to the sound design, which seems a bit more modern.

I'm not sure what "Stranger" is, but it obviously helped inspire some cool creativity in you, and that can't be bad. It was a fun listen, all the way through! Looking forward to hearing the finished product!

It's a super cool track you've done here!

I don't know if it's simply me, or a difference between Europe and US, but I seem to have a different idea of modern dub than a lot of things. I love reggae, and I love dub that has it's roots in reggae. It just seems that as dubstep moved into the pop culture, dub became more of a free thing for me. I can't explain it, and it's probably just me.

This is definitely a classic style, which makes me think of those few Clash gems which bordered on reggae. Reggae is really what this song is too my ears, albeit instrumental, though there is nothing wrong with that at all. I couldn't make a reggae type tune like this, that's for sure!

Dig it very much!

Always a treat to get some feedback from you man, sorry for the late reply, I'm so bad at responding to the comments but I sincerely appreciate them all ! So glad you liked the track. I really had a blast doing this one. Yeah the bit crusher is a very unique effect and it worked really well here. These type of tracks are a lot of fun to make and of course when I hear that others had fun listening to them as well, it makes it all worth while. Haha, yeah the sound bite is Gene Wilder from "Young Frankenstein". I had to put it in. As I began working on this I watched a few Frankenstein movies and when I saw that scene it inspired me to add the storm and thunder effects which I think are integral components to the overall intensity of the track and really helps create the vibe I was going for. Thanks for your cool comments Spiv. I very much appreciate it.

It's funny how people have adopted the horror film vocabulary/language into halloween in modern culture. Maybe I have watched to many horror flicks at all times of year for it to have this same effect on me. I can't help but see the death and rebirth all around me, all of the time.

This is super funky though, in the way that I think of extremely early hip hop and dancehall works. Just for this alone, this deserves massive respect!

It's not the sort of thing that I expect to hear on Looperman, so there's another endearing quality! This sampling alone must have taken quite some time, and I love some good samples.

I too do not like clowns, but I have conditioned myself to hear carnival music and think of freaks... those are my peeps... so the track isn't that scary for me!

I like what you've done though! It's clear and kind to the ears, while being potent like a slow hit.

So, someone brought up twerking before, and since I'm out of the loop I had to find out for myself that it was some sort of dance style. Does it have anything to do with tweaking? Crucethus's suggestion combined with this... a "tweaking clown" is far more creepy to me... heh.

Hey, this is fabulous!

You, of course, have a style which is all your own. At the same time, I can't help but dream up parallels with Matt Johnson/The The, even if such parallels are only in my head. It feels right to me, and is meant as a very high compliment. I might not be alive if it weren't for The The.

To create something like this in such a short moment in time is very impressive. It does not feel hurried to me in the performance either, so you should be proud.

This is really a relaxing piece of music, and also mysterious in the very best of ways!

For some reasons I started getting flashbacks of various songs form The Doors, such as "Riders On The Storm." Maybe if Jim M had lived much much longer, then The Doors would have delved into works such as this. Once people like Ed and yourself made it past age 27, then you already had an advantage though. When you work together, that sort of advantage really shows in the work!

This is beautifully composed and very special sounding, in range and depth. I could almost imagine that I was listening to the authentic versions of the represented instruments. The unusual synthetic aspects added so much interest, and were nearly unexpected. I like the unexpected, in most cases!

Very fun and pleasing to the ears! Can't wait to hear more from your "band" as it's always a pleasure! Fave!

It's an interesting combination of styles and interests here! I could see this making a pretty cool music video/short film. A lot of music videos are expanded from the original song in recent times, to make it more of a visual work of art. This song would be good for that.

Definitely has a great audio impression throughout, and is recorded and composed well. This reminds me a bit of something Kate Bush could have done, if she had a man's voice (heh). It's meant as a compliment, as she is one of my favorites of her era.

Very creative and cunning! I dig it!

Hey Spivkurl. I also enjoy the works of Kate Bush. So I gladly take your compliment. It's not something I intended to replicate, but it's cool that you get that vibe.
It's funny that you mention a music video, I often do lighting in music videos for friends and the odd commission. Never really thought about making a video for my own music. Might be worth having a think about.

Songs such as this really showcase your experience, training, and just plain talent when it comes to composition.

I have no idea what a fughetta, but I looked it up. So mainly it is a shorter fugue style. Is the contrapuntal side of things more strict in a fugue, or do they both share the same loose contrapuntal nature? Either way, that seems to be an excellent form of composition for your style! It seems to show up in your pieces a lot, and it is welcome. I know how challenging counterpoint can be for me personally, but I find it rewarding, and always interesting to listen to.

I could not seem to find any newer works of yours that I had not already commented on, but I enjoy digging deeper... like crate digging at a record store. I'm glad a I came upon this one. Composition, mix, and all else sounds great!

For mixing on this one all I did was turn down the faders and get them to where I liked them for each track, added some panning where I thought it needed it, and put an eq on one track to dampen a sound I didn't care for. Then for mastering I applied an ozone preset called emphasize bass which does some eq, some dynamics, and a little bit of compression.

on Torturer by Nodog
Dark and disturbing, just as it should be for the subject matter.

It's interesting, one of my favorite groups Skinny Puppy had to bring a lawsuit against the US government because their music was used as a form of torture in the Guantanamo facility. Someone who was confined their informed the group. This is a good example of how the government thinks that they own everything and everyone. If anyone is going to use my music for torture, then you can be sure it will be me!

This surely suggests industrial to me, unless by "hardcore" you were meaning more in the punk/metal aspect. Hardcore dance would be something very different. Not that it matters. It is "hardcore" in the free use of the word!

Thanks for sharing this one, and trying to make a difference in the world!

Deeply enchanting piece you have made here! I'm happy that I found this one. I did a quick translate of the description, and I agree fully that this has the jungle edge to it. It seems rare to hear a good jungle track any more, aside from when I whip out the old singles from behind the vinyl crate. I guess that this song had that kind of feeling, like digging out memories which one doesn't think of often any more...

The above was the only thing left from my comment on your song yesterday, and it was retrieved from the server due to a "security" issue. I have these come up most everyday, and usually my written work is gone for good after that. I will try to continue.

The break beat sounding aspect to the main section percussion is especially excellent. Even moving quite away from the speakers, it cuts through the whole place. I love the sound of that part.

Yesterday, I listened twice, with the second time being much louder. Today I just started out loud. It sounds really good that way.

There is something familiar about the vocal part, maybe it is included in some old DJ set I have maybe not. Either way I like it, and it fits in well with this style.

The whole song takes me "back," in a very pleasant way. It is for sure a fave, and I look forward to hearing it on my ipod. I love this sort of music for walking the streets!

I know that I must have been more, or possibly far less articulate when I commented yesterday, but that is how it goes. I wanted to finish the job, and also get that all to special download! Thank you for sharing this song!

hi Spiv, i apologize for the late answer...
About toxic Humans, you're right, it sounds like old school jungle... i rarely compose this kind of genre so i think that I draw from my memories. Younger, i made a lot of electro fests, tecknivals, rave parties (when it wasn't allowed and i only speak for the french law :))

I'm conscious that the sound evolved a lot, every day i discover new genre in the electro world but, how can i say that... you can't do nothing against the nostalgy... Time goes by, we age and we cling to what were our young years. I do it by music apparently.

don't worry about the fail post, i encountered the same problem too on Shatner Track "mic holders" :)

I'm glad you enjoyed this track. the duration is a little short, i think i need to work again on it.

One more time thanks for sharing your feeling! i appreciate, you know it
