Very different and relaxed, just felt good. I dig the distorted drum breaks. And yeah that switch from relaxed tribal day to a celebrative tribal night was just awesome. It felt like a day in the Savannah in fast forward. The EQ sounds fine, specifically for this track. Im sure though that you had a great learning experience through this. Thats very good, and I think this is a significant step forward for ya. Very nice Thanx, very nice.
Thanks scythe! always good to have you comment on my tracks! I'm planning on giving it a bit of a remaster in the near future. But until then my brother in mobile music production! I'm off to review one of yours!
This is a fun track! I love those e-piano melodies, definitely very jazzy! Great drum beats, they've got a breakbeat edge to them! I think the mix sounds pretty good for this style of tracks! So you did this on a phone? That's so cool! Really good track friend!
haha You´re too kind! First track I ever produced, and it´s funny that you should review this one, because I just gave it a relisten and I think it´s horrible even worse without the original samples from the ninja turtles movie... well at least terribly boring! I did do it on an itouch, which is why a lot of the instruments are... lacking. I´m planning on giving it a remix in the very near future... So maybe you can listen to that one as well! Breakbeat is a very good choice for a genre, so maybe that´s what I´ll do the remix in. Thanks for the review!
wow you made this on iphone? haha man i didnt think those programs were this advanced. this is got like a slowed down old school hip hop type feel to it. love the track change around 2 minutes. kinda goes into like a tribal sorta sound. the more i listen the more i love it. really cool set of loops you through in there, they all work perfectly together. i personally think the congas/tablas are a good choice, leave them in! at first i thought the claps didnt have enough highs in the EQ but after listening it kinda adds a darker feel to the track the way they are. faving this, was very interesting and cool listen
Thanks for the review! Actually, to be fair I alter a lot of my loops in audacity first... get the BPM to match, stretch out those drums (which is why that clap is so low, it's at 50%) I'm still considering messing with the drums a bit, so who know's maybe I'll eq in the claps just a touch higher. We'll see. thanks for the fav!
my advice, leave it be. but look into some mastering tutorials anyways. that was a pretty cool journey, if you want something to make it a little better though, i would give it a bit more range, the frequencies sound kinda crushed right now (a disadvantage partially made obvious by the disortion on the drums). when it comes to panning, i think itd be cool if you had a different chord note on the other side of the wind instrument(? sounds like a synthesized oboe). but overall, that was a pretty cool journey sir, so i salute you
Thanks cyber! always appriciate your advice, and actually I owe you a thanks as well, as I got the idea for the drums using your forum post. I'll see what i can do about throwing another note on the other side of that... but the horns/oboe whatever the hell they were are a sample, so I may just have to pull another instrument in to pull that off. Thanks for the review!
This is a great piece! It gives me a feeling of peace! Great job using loops on this one! I like the drums a lot, they're snappy! This updated mix sounds good, even though I didn't hear the old one. The bass is solid without being overpowering. Those strings and guitars are really cool! Nice work my friend!
Really like this tune. I especially love the reverse piano. It's amazing how the simple act of reversing a loop can lead to a totally different feeling and sound. The organ is really what makes me even think of this as a dub tune, or else I would have no idea how to categorize this. Love the pads you bring towards the latter half as well. My only criticism would be the that the bass sounds maxed out and distorted, especially in the few bars where it's the primary sound. Maybe you could eq that and make it more of a sub for those few bars, while leaving the rest as is. Keep up the good work.
I have no idea why I took so long to reply to these, but Thanks for the review and thanks for the advice. Right now it´s a bit hard for me to EQ individual parts of a song without it effecting the whole thing (I´m using an ipod app) but once I get a real DAW I plan on remastering all my tracks. I will definitely fix that bassline! Solid advice and thanks again!
nice track here. it has got that a rock feel to it and somehow the electronic. but what catches me the most is kinda the hip hop feel to it. maybe i am the only one who hears it. nice compilation.
Thanks for the review... but I don't have the original anything, as it was recorded by a friend years ago. As I say in the description I'm looking to do a total overhaul of everything.
*edit I read some more of your reviews, and listened to some of your tracks which makes me feel better about this one...
As you say there's nothing wrong with being honest I think it's your lact of tact that upsets everyone.
Honestly, you p1ss people off cuz you come across as an arrogant pr1ck rather than someone offering helpful advice (which I now realize is what you were trying to do)
Learn some humility, show respect and half you're track reviews won't be people just responding to the fairly rude things you say. No hard feelings felt, or meant by this by the way, peace and love brother, you've given me a positive review before, just trying to help with all the hostility you seem to receive.
v2: the additional production work on this is so fitting - this contains so much, and for me it's the thing happening in the interstices that really pull me in - awesome music, much respect
Thanks for coming back for a second listen! It's nice to have experienced vets such as yourself giving me feedback and helping me improve my technique. Respect to you and yours as well.
This is just great thnx! I mean wow for real...I think its the bass that really makes this track and the strings..dude amazing stuff! Nice and keep it up!
Thanks for the listen! I'm glad you like the bass, since it was one of like two things I actually created. I'll be sure to post the loop ASAP... It's amazing how complex and dynamic the synth I used is considering it was a $3 itouch app... Thanks again!
Let me start by saying this is a great piece, I really enjoyed it!
Bass is too heavy brother, albeit at times it actually works, it can def drop down a bit. Some of your samples are too piercing, perhaps EQ them a bit. That or simply lower their volume. Im specifically looking at the blaring horn or guitar sample.
This is a great piece. Really moves and stays busy. I enjoyed it Thanx.
Ok sorry for the long reply... wanted to wait til I had actually updated with your suggestions... I'm altered the mix a bit, let me know how that bass is... I still can't hear it really in my headphones...
not a producer, but from this listener's pov - this is really a lovely and flowing piece of music - the stitches or breaths (as opposed to cuts) add a perspective - without that really cool human touch this might sound more like a collage rather than a tapestry, which is what i'm hearing - much admired
The bass at around 37 sec could prob come down just a tad, sounded a little much in my headphones. Thought there could have been some more highs in it as well, just brighten it up a bit, add some presence. That could be because it's not mastered too. Just my opinion, hope it helps.
Thank you! This is exactly the kind of advice I was looking for! I think my headphones don't have the range to pick up the bass, because honestly I can't hear it at all! I'll be sure to bring down the volume a bit and EQ up the highs... It's a bit tough because I'm making my tracks on an Ipod Touch, but I think I can manage it. Thanks again for the really helpful review.
*edit track updated, took your advice and eq'd the highs on the bass a bit higher.
Quite honestly, I have no idea what the genre dub should sound like. What I can say is that I enjoyed this track, very very much. It is so well constructed. Perfect use of fx and the transitions are seamless. An all around sweet piece of music.
This is really cool mate. Wicked riff, funky beat, nothing wrong at all. The vocals have a great tone and i like the lyrics. I love old school type hip hop, all that gangsta bullsh*t does my head in, so i appreciate this message!
I just think those vocals need to be higher in the mix so you can hear them better.
Wow thanx, very interesting track here man. Never a dull moment IMO, well constructed. The bass is fine in my opinion as well, could be a lil less squelch I think though. Just a tad brother, just a tad.
Great use of vox saples, the percussion really keeps it moving! Synthwork is on point, and the reggae sub synth really rolls the track along.
Great track, as mentioned, only ish i have is the bass personally. But maybe thats just me lol. As a matte of fact, screw it, just keep it, its great as is. Haha
EDIT:
Nah I think I was trippin Thanx, its fine.
it does? How so?
Thanx Scythe, It's funny that you're review of my track sounds so much like my review of yours... good criticism though, once you mention it I can see hear it myself. I think I still have the synth saved in Argon, once I replace my headphones maybe I'll go back and alter it... Thanks again.
Doesn't sound too daunting, if just not sound designing it to be just like the original?
It's very cool man.
I love the style.. southern drawl... Kinda G Love.... Funk yes my man.
Awesome.
I saw them cats at a festival one time, and he was just chillin on a lawn chair on a stage drinking caronas lol... it was awesome, Cold Beverages.
Hell yea! I'm not gonna lie, I totally gave up on someone redoing this, but I guess it was just waiting for someone worthy of the task. I would be honored to have you redo it. No need for it to sound like the original... Maybe a close BPM would be nice, Other than that have at it! If you need it I'd be more than happy to lay down some harmonica on it (assuming it needs it) Hit me up when you got something going.
Sorry for the long time on the reply. When it comes to hip hop my inspiration is all old school. It's too bad more artists are in the words of JB "Talkin loud, and saying nothing."
Essentially it is a Dub track but I think some of the loops you have used make it some sort of dub/fusion hybrid. I think some of the early reviews hit the nail on the head. Needs some deep bass and needs a load of fx in various places. Fx loops and individual notes. Mix up the fx you use for variation. Experiment with panning. Overall the levels need a good tweak. Not too shabby though for your first dub. Good effort.
dub/fusion I can live with. Took your advice and added a bassline, used an itouch app called argon synth. also added some fx as well. Unfortunately, one of the limitations of beatmaker is how fx are handled, and panning as well. I Think beatmaker was more designed with a live production sort of mindset, and if you want to adjust panning on a loop or section for only a short section, It's only possible live. Same with applying fx, when I add an fx (and I only have 2 channels) it affects the loop in EVERY section, unless I make a copy of the loop and waste one of my precious 16 available pads on a clean version as well.
I'm curious about the levels as well. I'm quickly discovering getting good levels is one of my weaknesses, probably due to inexperience and shitty headphones... So even just some "turn the bass up a bit, and the drums down" type advice would go a long way. Thanks again!

sounds like someone was pounding it.
The vocal work needs to be polished badly.
the music itself needs to be cleaned up and balanced out.
Work to be done here.
