mmmmmh ... this is what I call "hypnotic" ...
that bassline is almost magnetic!
it's pretty rare to hear a track where the word "dope" fits so perfect than for this one ... ;-)
awesome work!!!
no weak points ... not at all ...
rei - when I joined this site and started playing with loops I put up my first tracks as "Trance" because of their hypnotic quality. I'm glad I can still create this mental/emotional space with my work. I'm delighted and flattered that you improve! And I'm really delighted to see you've got more tracks up! Will be listening and reviewing more of yours shortly! Thanks much for the listen and review.
Wow. this is truly a awesome sound scape. those throaty chants almost sound like a didgeridoo. i love the ambiance. i do almost feel like im being stalked by some vicious feline sulking in the tall grass. hidden just out a site but ready to pounce. excellent production!
The "throaty chants" and the effects stacks on them were originally an attempt to recreate a sort of dubstep wobble with the human voice. Though not successful here, I'm convinced it's something that can be done and probably should. Got to stick something really organic into the mix. Thanks for the thumbs up and review!
wow, this track has you in your seat as if at a movie..when the crazy part happens and that piece of popcorn that is already in your mouth kinda just falls out and you dont even try to catch it as you are so invovled with whats going on...very intense in other words [lol]..a great listen. i was exited to see 'dubstep' and read on..as you said "when the muse.."gotta listen..very wise.
great track no matter what the genre i wouldnt change a thing!

In terms of composition I get frustrated in how seldom I arrive at my original "vision." I should probably just get used to the fact that inspiration usually arrives in the thick of things and celebrate it somehow. It's a solid foundation, and I'm about 15 takes now into figuring out what to do with it next. More frustration, but without agitation and discomfort would an oyster ever make a pearl? Glad you approve of the draft! Thanks much for the review!
One of the first in this medium that I really liked. It was also the first to fall from grace for me - lol. Funny the difference in perspectives between the audience and the performer. I've wondered several times now about trying this one again, and you've got me in contemplation mode again. Thanks Wayne, both for the review and inducing thinking on my part. Cheers.
very cool namad! you def have the nak for the ambient and this indian vox is great. ive always had a soft spot for indian stuff.all the subtle sounds add so much to your mix. fantastic job and a real pleasure of a listen ;]
thanks

Hey Sector7even - I'm savvy enough to recognize the vocal style here, and it's from the same Sufi musical tradition as the famous Nasrat Fati Ali Khan. I did transpose the vocals so the singing was deeper, and I'm pretty satisfied with the result on this one. It really should be closer to 8 minutes long, but it's nice in this form. Glad you like it. Thanks for the review!
Almost has a PlanetJazz thing happening in some aspects...
But it is undeniably awesome!
I can almost picture what sounds you put together to make that epic digital hummnnnnn fill the spectrum...
GOD i Fukkkking LOVE great space!
This is full of tempted sonics... It's like I can feel you holding back...
As far as a purist DnB goes you would "technically" have failed.
And I say YES THANK SWEET BABY JESUS lol!!!!!

Faving this one...
Altho, if you are feeling really crazy, I would think about adding some really Sawey waved synths with the epic eponymous digital wash you have going that to me represents the predatory... but please? introduce a simple counter melody?
I am feeling a TB-303.. but I could be wrong...
Something very striking timbre pops into mind.. something SCREAMING for life.
Is this a done endeavor?
I think there's more to be discovered here...
But for the time being, I am going to STFU and just enjoy this.

POST EDIT.
Thank you!
You know, I was listening again today, and I was thinking about something....
The thing about cats....
This was told to me by a friend, and I have never forgotten it, and I know this is off of the music part, but more of the storyline...
but cats are amazing predators and amazingly agile.
The problem with cats, and the theories on them, is that they see the world literally like people saw the special effects in the matrix... (I should most definitely linkage some reference, but hear me out)
When you take a cat out of it's element, it immediately shuts down as a predator. It has to COMPLETELY stop all functions and watch every little detail in the room.
For example, if you move a cat from one house to another with a cage, and you release the cat, It moves slowly, checking everything out.
And day after day, the cat becomes more accustomed, and eventually the cat is jumping off the ceiling fan and scratching your face off.
Anyway, keep me posted... all I can really do with GMAIL is log in and see what's happening but can't do anything else in my account.
I wonder at times if it has anything to do with their current state of affairs.
Bad news on gmail, as I did send a draft for advice. Let me know when you're up, will you? You know my impression Abe, and you're the audience I'm thinking about (including motivation, you know? Read 'storying'.)
This is the first draft I've gotten under 10 minutes long. Most takes are running between 12 and 17 minutes, so the Beast has a life of its own. My latest attempt has been to render individual and two tracks together and reimport the lot into a new session to try some things with isolation and perhaps more manipulation of the sense of time. Ableton Live 7 LE's got severe limitations, but I'm understanding things well enough to work around them at last.
I'm absolutely intrigued by your suggestion to add a counter melody, and I'm sure that's going to set me down several unexpected paths. Sweet!
I'm so glad you're back! And I owe you a huge thanks, as you're the ONE that convinced me to defect to the Ableton camp. Cheers for that!
Wow, that's best visual analogy of what I was going for yet! Swarm dynamics to describe the unfolding chaos of a Logic Bomb. Yes indeed, thank you for that one!
This is awesome without a shadow, man you don't beat about the bush, two great tracks in a short time, you have been a busy man.
This track really had me jacking man, to me this is serious music and you ain't joking when it comes to what you do.
Superb beats and atmosphere, i am sucker for those throat sounds, and that bass just brings all the magic together.
I could easily go a longer version of this, for i am striving for more, leaping razor, man you are a stepping razor and this is what makes you dangerous.
A cat song!..well an inspiration from one..cool! I'm a cat person as well as a Leo....Groovy man! (lol..pardon me for using a hackneyed expression but it seemed to fit)..heavy duty rhythms and the distortion works well...quite gnarley as my surfing friends would say....The bottom line here..if you say it's Drum and Bass,it is!....anybody that's going to raise any issues with the distinction probably won't be listening to it anyway! lol...I must say that while I've always felt comfortable with my vocabulary and have endeavoured to keep pace with changing nomenclature, doing the same in regards to musical specific genres requires far too much pain and suffering..I'm all in favour of generalised descriptions, even just 'good' or 'bad' will do...I think the problem started with musical historians and commentators..however I know the hat on backwards contingent had something to do with it...cheers Dave
Cats can slide into an inherent groove, so it works on a couple levels including a proclivity for savage tenderness. Knock the little one down and give her a good bath.
It's Drum and Bass in a proto-roots form (something you can relate to) by virtue of its foundation(s). The drums lean toward a reggae sensibility, and there's more than a gentle nod toward Dub (lots of reverb and delay). Maybe it's a prediction of Shuffle DnB, or Dance-in-Place Dub - 90 bpm allows dance for a very, very long time. Maybe someone will be forced to create yet another sub-genre as tolerance of the unclassified seems to get right up some noses.
No backwards baseball cap used in the creation of this one. Here's to that!
some nice ideas here brother.. love that throaty pad as a lead at the start... not sure of the genre but I'm not the genre police so.. ah well!! over all a well produced track would have like a little more speed but I liked it.. keep 'em coming brother
Aha - tempo! Yeah, I think the DnB tends to be quite a bit faster, and yet this is driven really by drums and bass...so I don't know. I might be pushing the generic definition here. In my previous response I said I'm not quite sure about ht tempo either, so I'm glad you called it. Makes me think my impulse is probably correct here. Thanks for the encouragement!
I can definitely hear this as being a good soundtrack to cat antics! Awesome title, you're always good at titling tracks! Sweet bass line, you can kind of tell it has dubstep origins, but it definitely has evolved. The percussion on this one is really laid back and kind of psychedelic, cool stuff! Very good work on this, it's quite an interesting track!
My youngest daughter's cat was dashing and leaping about in the final mix down, so I'm guessing it's working for her, too. The bass line is bosonHavoc upright bass loops - that not surprisingly are Dubstep and the first element I started with here. Usually it's drums for me, so this was a bit odd. I'm not sure about the rhythm - and I'm tempted to speed it up further or maybe go the other way. I like the slow laid back vibe, but maybe it needs to slow down a bit more...I'll know with the next experimentations. Thanks for the review!
The throat chants and effects added were initially to create a wobble without a bass, hence the Dubstep. It's got proto-elements, but most certainly a recognizable vibe. I met someone yesterday whose cat doesn't know the universal food call - can you believe it? A 12 year old cat that doesn't know the click. Thanks for the review!
ah the master returns, reminds of something eno byrne might have done, not that it resembles , but that sort of vocal meets the awesome rythym going on, well done master!! (hehe) always enjoy your work, gives me creativity to experiment, cheers!
Experimentation is so much fun! If I'm giving you license then run with it. Thanks for the listen and review friend. I'll be swinging by to see your latest offerings next. Cheers.
Hi Sean,
Your style is definitely unique.Your tracks are deeply "earthly" and human and still they seem to carry me to a very special and different place. This one is certainly among my favourite from you.
Great music

StÃÂphane,
Merci. Un favori personnels auprès de vous est un grand honneur et je voulais rÃÂpondre dans le même esprit. S'il vous plaÃÂt pardonnez mon fossilisÃÂs et inadÃÂquate Français.
I feel the same way about your music, and why I love it so much. You really do have your own signature sound.
Thanks for the kind review and adding this one to your favorites! Cheers - Sean
wow this is epic. nice job i like the whole breakdown, it starts good from the very first note and continues to expand. nice vocal sample, i really enjoy the synths as well, and it is very trippy. nice trip you put me on.
Thanks. Constructive criticism played heavily in getting this one to this point, but I'm largely satisfied with it. I'm considering doing a "Music to Have a Rebellion To" project, and I think this one will have to go on it. Cheers.
nice.. I love the eastern feel those instruments really get my hairs on the back of my neck up... this track is dub smoking a houkka in Marrakesh brother.. nice I love it.. you work those effects so well beautiful... keep 'em coming brother
Hey Numberjack - cheers again for creating that little game! This is one of my first 3 tracks made in this medium, and probably the one that convinced me to continue doing the "solo" approach. Thanks for the review and encouragement, my UK brother!
Heya profplum - glad you approve. I think Irish ballads lend themselves well to a certain form of tribalism, but didn't realize it until making this track. Cheers.
I usually can't wrap my head around these fusion type tracks enough to enjoy them, but this is an exception. I like how everything works well together. If it were me, I would try dropping that really high synth or string sound, I can't tell what it is, a fifth or a full octave. It just sounds annoying in the rest of the mix, just my opinion. I think if it were lower in register it would flow better and maybe work as a slight counter melody to the voice. Keep it up though, I like your style.
Hey Marius9 - you know, I hadn't even considered this...thanks for the suggestion, and I'll certainly give it a spin and see how it takes. That's the great part of this for me, the suggestions that wouldn't be considered otherwise. A counter melody just might smooth the tension a little more in this one - but I'll be careful not take it out altogether. I like how it feels somehow rebellious in this version. Thanks for the listen and review! Cheers.
Love the slowed down dub, and then the beautiful nuggets of sound sprinkled over it along the path... gorgeous. It just keeps moving forward, this one, gliding... I am gonna have to get this for my headphones when I am walking to work... Wha?? No more dl? Awww...
...A few days later... OK, I just had to buy the whole album. Downloaded now and ready for enjoying. Thanks for putting together such great stuff!
Mega Monster Music Ltd. currently owns the distribution rights for these tracks, but are gracious enough to let me post them in full streaming fashion. Still, it's a compliment that you'd like a copy. Thanks!
I certainly will be listening to allot more of your work n0mad. I am fascinated by your extremely cool use of all kinds of sounds. I mean, I don't think I have ever heard so many sounds used in such a perfect way that I could not picture the track without them. What instrument did you use for your main melodic elements? Extremely interesting and well put together. Just coolness!
The melody is created by the geng gongs (see image link above), and really are some of my favorite instruments of all time. They're really different in tonality from the metal Jew's harps we're used to hearing. Actually the two in the picture are the very ones used in this track (I have a dozen in my collection). I did a 3 track recording with the 2 geng gongs, and then created this around that melody.
The mutations this one went through can't really be appreciated in what you hear now. What I had originally intended is much different than what happened. I don't "get" Hip Hop and this started as a personal challenge to make a track. A lot of really frustrating attempts that just didn't work at first. Really this came together only after I gave myself up to the archetype that I had invoked, the Trickster Frog. Sounds funny, but really it was only after I stopped trying to force it, and then "let it happen" did the internal logic of it all reveal itself.
Damn Jung and his Soft-Science!
It is a "thick" piece isn't it? In one of my other tracks, someone said they thought "maximalism" would sound like my stuff. Maybe I'm the counter weight to Philip Glass? Here it ended up deliberate, as the "Frog Song" is composed of many voices, and mirrors the desire of drums (who don't want to be played alone).
this is very kool brother.. got a trippy primal scream feel to it... or early chemical brothers..a solid track with it roots in the 90's electro loved the vocals.. theres some very nice production going on here.. always liked your stuff haven't listened to much since I've been back here on looperman.. gonna check out some more when I get time.. keep 'em coming brother
I wasn't aware you were away, which says something about the volume of traffic here, doesn't it? First, welcome back brother! Second, thanks for the encouraging words on this one, and I look forward to your feedback on others. I'll certainly be visiting your music again, sooner than later! Cheers.
There are elements to the early part of the track that remind me of some of the Eno/Byrne stuff on My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. I'm new around here and just getting my first listens to your stuff, but so far I really like how your pieces shapeshift and evolve. (And thanks for the tip about the fusion genre... that's totally the right call for me!)
Admittedly I listened to a lot of Eno and Byrne over the years, but My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is one I've never heard. I hadn't considered either as real influences, but I'm sure it's there. Actually, I really started seriously with music in the early `90's in Seattle in the underground scene, and I really see what I'm doing now as an evolution of that. Acoustic Trance into Primal Electronica. Glad you're enjoying my sonic offerings.
OMG, now we're talking. I can take a little Irish in my coffee, but usually not in my music. You, however, have made me rethink that anti-Irish position. I teach movement classes and could definitely see us exploring/experimenting to this. Incredibly interesting layers. Primal and ethereal, simultaneously. I didn't hear the other versions, but this one is glorious.
Welcome fellow Cascadian! It's a weird track (but Fusion nonetheless - lol) and to me still shouldn't work. The juxtaposition is just too awkward. But it does work somehow (I suspect a non-native English singer helps) and I feel really good about this version. Thanks for the review!
Hey Kid Khaos, you're right up the road from me. Suddenly wondering if you might know my friend Judd as he's been spinning turntables about the same time span as you. Glad you liked this one, though it's not representative of my other work. I'll be checking out your tracks next. Cheers.
