This is twisted as f**k mate. The back track is very kind of sonic youth and the vocals add to the rawness of it.
I've no idea how you come up with some of the sounds you use but i seem to always like the ones that you sing on.
I like the synth that comes in at the last third of the track. Reminds me a little of those old video games from back in the 80's.
Nuts and grungy as hell but well worth listening to.
Dig this one mate!!!

Thanks my friend for diving into my newest track! Being compared with sonic youth is pleasing to me, as I've been listening to them for a long time. I guess my best advice about getting sounds is to record everything that makes noise, and then find unusual ways to use that noise. I'm glad this reminds you of old video games, as putting it in the 8 bit genre it probably should do just that. Thanks much for the listen and fave!

Hahh...I've never heard music like this...some kinda alien made for me from the 25th century...and what's this genre?
My eyes are wide opened and my mouth too...:-)
My little girly yelled me: Papa, what's wrong with you?
I went back 3 times to listen it...
Still familiarize with this number but I'm on the right way...
Thanx for this special adventure Spiv...:-)
Best, Danke

I can't express how good your comment makes me feel! Even just the fact that you've never heard music like this, that's so cool! I guess I took advantage of Shan adding the 8 bit chiptune circuit bending genre, and added my strange circuit experiments to the mix. I had several NL #5 apple fritters during the writing of this, I guess it shows. At first I was trying to head in the psy goa direction, but very quickly it changed gears and became like a digitized velvet undergroundish rock jam. Didn't mean to freak out your child...heh. It sounds like you listened enough to get to the surprise at the center. Hope you are having an awesome day, especially since you brightened mine! Thanks much!

Hello ....

Again your particularity and I would say your musical singularity, at hit the bull’s eye (in French this is a phrase that could be translated as "you have reached your goal") and captured the interest of the listener ....
Nothing else to write, I'm listening. d^_^b

Thank you for your kind comments! Sounds like "hit the bull's eye" translates the same on this side of the ocean. It's a nice thing to say! Been trying some new things lately, so it's good to hear some people can enjoy it! Thanks!

This definitely has quite a raw sound which i like. Not really heard much chiptune stuff before but its quite catchy. It sounds like it could be a track for a ps one game or something.
Spivkurl
Spivkurl replied 16th Apr 2014 - 11 years ago
Thanks for your response to my latest work! I'm glad you enjoyed that raw sound, it kind of happened that way without thinking too much. If this reminds you of a PS one soundtrack, I suppose that means it belongs as a chiptune. It was mainly an experiment to put it under this genre, since it new, and because I used a bunch of lo fi circuit bent stuff. I wanted to see how different the listener's list and reviews would be under this genre. Interesting so far... heh. I appreciate you listening!

all i can say about this is that i honestly had a big smile on my face right to there end. I think it is a skill in itself to capture a certain feeling or emotion and this defo cought a happy vibe.
Might just play it again sam.

You seem to have a unique impression of this song, maybe I captured a happy vibe without intending it. That's cool I guess. Thank you so much for listening to this, and for keeping in touch with me lately!

This is an interesting one. It's far more aggressive and raw. I think I can say this is my favorite of yours. And I downloaded your album. (Which I've listened to on several occasions.) The intro is almost misleading. It has an almost whimsical nature until about :10 when you realize this is going to be a darker ride. I like the fact that there's no giant kicks in this. As it is, it's almost mischievous. Big kicks would have just got in the way of all the other elements working together in this.
I've never really delved into the chiptune genre. I've always thought that what I had heard was intriguing, though. I may have to look a little further into it. This one is going in my fave file for sure, man. Nice work.

Take care.
Aaron.

Hello my friend, I value your listen and viewpoints very much! Thank you for downloading my album. The intro is not the only thing about this song that is misleading, be sure of that. It's a very unusual song for me because of the low end (kicks and bass), very incidental. Honestly putting this in the 8-bit genre was mostly an experiment, partly because it's a new genre here on the loop, and partly because of the lo fi circuit bent stuff that drives this song along. If you find any other chiptunes which are any way similar to this, please link me up, I'd be intereted to hear it. Thanks again for listening!

on Spivkurl vs DeciBel - Hidden Locked Tight by Spivkurl
The darkness that we all hold within us generally carries upon it's face the most beautiful sights you can imagine. Generally, no one is willing to look past the darkness and the pain to find the beauty. That's where being an artist comes into play. Whether it's music, painting, photography, or whatever medium. We have that ability to leash that hidden beauty, no matter how locked tight, and bring it to the surface for others to enjoy. While, I'm no advocate for personal struggles, I fully admire our nature as artists to bring back a piece of heaven from out of the depths of hell. So to speak.
I love the use of Massive in this. Especially how unapologetically the "Modern Talking" patch is just thrown in your face. Not many people can pull that one off.
There is a lot of distortion in this track. That, combined with the rapid synth movement and uneasiness in your vocals that the auto-tune provides, brings out a feeling of needing to lash out from a frustrated aggression, but a total reluctance to do so. In other words...keeping it locked tight.
As always, man. Awesome work.

Take care.
Aaron.

Spivkurl replied 19th Apr 2014 - 11 years ago
As always, your reviews enhance my day! I'm beginning to realize that darkness and light are just extremes, and thusly are basically the same thing. Both are needed, and both inspire. I honestly don't know what instruments were used in this, as Benham did all the real musical work. I just did some mixing, vocals, and mastering. You're probably right about the modern talking, I didn't really think of it until you said something. I generally don't use that sound in my songs, but it's effective here. I'm glad you pointed out the uneasiness from the autotune, as that's one of the main reason I had been using autotune so much. I felt it enhanced the artificial sheen on my vocals. Sort of the same reason I'm no longer anti-MP3. I don't think I'll be using autotune on my vocals much anymore, as people have encouraged me not to. If they can stand my dischord, why not give it to em. Thanks so much for listening and leaving your deep thoughts! Take care!

Hey dear friend

What's happen since I haven't been here lol ,wow so different mate, but so catchy and totally loving it, excellent vocals, credit to you man, think vocals suit and work great with the main works, to me this piece has a techno, DNB feel about it, wow so looking forward to your other works over next week or two if this one is anything to go by, even though love what you do anyway, so talented and very different sound then many here, first fav on my return...hope all is well with you and yours mate...PLR mosaic...

Heh, good to hear from you friend! Thanks for giving your valuable comments! I know for me a lot has changed in the past year or so, generally for the better. A lot of the darkness of this track is imparted by way of Benham's fiery DnB rhythms and stuff, I just sort of went with it. I'm glad you're back on the Loop!

where is my soul! holy cow! wild active beat. lots of attention to detail here. a lot of work in this and sounds fantastic. real techno age chaos! i think there is room to "effect" the voice more (like you start to in the final part) - strange it out! great track! thoroughly enjoy.

Thanks my friend for giving this a listen! I won't be going back to change anything on this now, I'm very much in the moment when it comes to writing and mixing now, so once it's out there, I'm pretty much done with it. Was nice to work with Benham a little bit! Hope you are well!

That was rather interesting to listen too, I always like hearing tracks that are innovative but when I read spivkurl and behnam I expected that already haha. It is not something usual and as far as it goes I like it though I wouldn't want to listen to this every day haha
But big ups to you two for creating this ;)

Percussion Intro is awesome. (Ironic singing where is my soul using auto-tune). Your vocal delivery with different echolations reminds me of another artist I know from Austin Texas..New Neon. Well Mixed and produced. I liked this one!

Spivkurl replied 13th Apr 2014 - 11 years ago
Thanks much cruce! Was a fun joint effort this time. Yep, the autotune was ironic for sure, and I look at it as an end to an era, or atleast a transition because of this. Haven't run into New Neon that I remember, thanks for the comparison though. I appreciate you listening and commenting!

Really interesting track Spiv...I knew it would be when I read that you and Behnam were mixing it up...definite industrial backing and a bit dark/ominous..The vocal is quite a contrast..not so much the lyrics...but it has a lighter vibe and your vocal character puts a more upbeat vibe to it in spite of the darkness of the words...I guess it just continues to prove that music can paint some very complex pictures for the mind of the listener...Music for thinking people...that is a very creative kind of accomplishment....a well done to you and Behnam...Ed

Your comment made my day friend! I hadn't really thought about the feelings you got from the vibe of the vocals and stuff. I think the lyrics are pretty basic averall, but I tried to inject the light and dark of life into them. I appreciate you listening to some unusual styles. Thanks very much!

This is a cool unexpected collab. I think the music rocks and is very cool industrial sounding track by itself. I must say Pat that your vocals are great here. I liked the backups, cool delay you used. Cool effects on all the vocals and they work great with the music.

Well done both of you, very cool collab!

Thanks so much Wayne! It's always good to get a review from you! I respect the fact that you are open to just about any sort of music, it's important especially being a musician yourself. I'm trying to become much more spontaneous with my song creation and my vocals, and the vocals on this were a bit of a transition I guess. I'm glad they sounded okay anyway. Thanks again!

I hope it doesn't sound like I'm taking away from your creativity by making the comparison, but one of the things I love about your work is that it sounds like Mark Mothersbaugh tapped it with his magic Devo wand.

For banging this out in just a few hours, it sounds pretty damn good to me! Man, it usually takes me that many hours just to build the synth patches for my tracks. If you ask me, it's a testament to your abilities, mister.

Awesome work!

Take care, Mr. Spivkurl.

Hey, it's really nice to hear from you on this track! The comparison to Mark M is one that surprises me, but in a good way! He has made a huge mark on electronic music, and on my soul, so it means a lot to me! It's rare that I would do a song in this short of a time span, and if it weren't a cover I don't think it would've gone down like that. It felt good to express what I was feeling using someone else's ideas, sort of like DJ'ing in a way. Thanks for the support and feedback!
