Funny how a good piece of satire can twist certain knickers into atomic wedgy status. This is a happening piece! Love the intro and drums and how they genuinely turn the genre upside down. I really like how the lyrics here really go after the whole commodification/commercialization/corporatism of hip hop culture. If this is hip hop, I've got to adjust my bias again as I really dig this one!

Haha..thanks man..this was just a tongue in cheek thing...I don't mind Hip Hop so much(not that I understand it)it's the knuckle dragger's that produce it that are the problem..cheers Dave :)

Hi Planet, I spotted this in the featured tracks box and gave it a whirl. Nice ambience to this, lovely acoustic guitar sound and great poetry - a marriage of two worlds indeed.

This one is crossing lines here. I kind of feel like singing in spanish, but then i kind of feel like old school classic rock type feel. The percussion is steady and that large *Boom makes me feel like something exploded in my house. Okay, Okay, Nice video Game music.

First of all cool synthetic lead pattern. Like the time-sig..the bass is nice..cool tone (nicely used reverb). I like the percussion as well and the verb on the bass drum.

This reminds me of Frank Zappa's album "Jazz from Hell" on which he composed and played everything on a Sinclavier. Interesting and unusual bass work.

goes without saying that the bass & horns are awesome and very well arranged and done with quite the finesse. but you really fill the track out with the ambient sounds in the background that arise, as well as the curious sounds that accompany as accents. the beginning and end are awesome too I forgot to mention.

that breakdown around 1:50 is soooo dope too. great percussion. awesome production. 10/10.

i envy your bass skills.

Hi Dave,

Been wanting to get to hear some of your latest as I have a couple days off now.
Sounds like a fretless bass here. Something I have never owned. Has a nice sound. Kinda of gives a warm mellow feeling.
The piano parts fit in nicely from your friend. Very nice production overall.

I have Ableton live that came with my Pro Tools, but have never used it. I did open it up and experimented with it for about 1/2 hour and decided it was too much to learn all at once, as I was learning PT. at the time too.

Later then and have fun,
Randy

it's odd to me how you are always in there Dave!

You definitely speak in volumes!

Is this in the Key of Black and White???
lol

this is Jazz for a new generation in someways!

I did hear something going on-- IN whole notes over this in my head which would have opened up the feeling --- at least in my mind. Just my opinion

Despite my criticism, the break was ENOUGH for me to fall in love with the track.
all in ten minutes!

You like any Squarepusher? You would LOOOOOVE squarepusher Dave.
seriously. Check him out, if you haven't.

Faved, Downloaded, Recommended.
(seriously, what key is this in?-- I love it, it's like a digital chameleon???)

Hey Abe..good question! lol..I'm sure in an expanded and scrutinized version a more repetitive key signature would emerge..I'm dabbling in Fsharp and A with a lot of flats thrown in...In these free form sessions I suppose I'm more concerned with timing..but I like to get the apparition of unexpected chords within the music by trying to play fifths in conjunction to what I'm hearing...in these sort of things I'm winging it..which I suppose in some ways is necessary if you want to fly..lol..ps...I'll definitely be checking out squarepusher..cheers mate :)

on When The Boat Comes In by Planetjazzbass
hey dave...

i had heard this song months ago, and... i liked it...
but bass was soo powerful.

and the compression was ... almost too sharp.. post edit**NOT TOO sharp.. but less threshold

and. this is a song of joy. something that i naturally don't feel aligned with often. but i really do LOVE the changing keys and pace.

i ... don't want you to take this ... baddly.. but let the music speak? let it have a moment DURING your playing to draw emotion?.

i still love it!

edit
Try and speak with your mouth, a statement with you bass in your hands, and record a solo style thing there??? ... for me?

Hey Abe...I hear you man...that's one of the best reviews I've ever received..I think a lot of what your talking about is the true actual fundamentals of good music..clearly when I created this piece I had a vision of what I wanted but in the application of it...it fell down in a few critical areas..I put it down to at that stage not being totally up to speed with my recording software and techniques...so rather than delivering a piece that breathes..it got cobbled together..I think I've reached the stage now where I'm a lot more aware of this...and there's more light and shade in my work....and please whenever you think I might take something badly..go in even harder!..I'm totally aware that music is a learning process..man sometimes I feel like I'm still on the first page!...cheers buddy..Dave :)

Nice,... pretty much sounds like a hip hop beat of the old school. LMAO your vox are hilarious. I couldnt really understand some parts but yeah "Boogie Woogie"

I think hip hop (like rock and roll was) is just mis understood. A few bad seeds ruin it for the rest.

Lol..yeah mate I agree...a lot of musical forms initially annoyed me Metal,Disco..Austrian Ooompha Bands,etc..hehe..What I know about HipHop could be written on the head of a pin..I think music is becoming more cross bred these days with many styles embedded within an evolving template......augers well for the future perhaps...thanks for taking time out to review..I appreciate it!..cheers planet :)
