Description : I really liked Jenna's acapella, posted here on Looperman (13136/summer-fling-120bpm-dance-acapella)

I did do some audio editing to modify phrasing in some places and created a new arrangement of her song. I hope she's not offended by the changes.

Polyverse should really pay me for informing others of their superior apps for music....why did i mention that....well the song you have re-arranged is great and the only addiction i would do is use a mod called "Wider" which you can bring anything sound 200% wider than its original setting in the mix and also comet which is a godsend for crisp reverbs and delays which can have instant drop offs.

Maybe even use a touch of valhalla Shimmer effect thru the vox for some extra gleam in the mix....again purely what i would do as im fussy with vocals and how the come out especially if i have too chop them up.

Love the song and the way you have mixed up the vocals is cool.

    Kindest Regards,

I'll check out those plugins. Thanks. I do have Valhalla Shimmer. Haven't used it much. Will try it on the vocals. I do use the Valhalla reverb on most of my tracks. I find it sounds good and is quite easy to tweak.

Howdy Eric! No need to be so hard on yourself man. I feel you really did awesomely well. My only complaints are mostly everything sounds kind of centered panned. The Bass smothers most of the song with a boominess sound. The attack on the compressor is rather on the high side too. I would have used both high and low pass filters on the bass instrument bus to tighten up the bass frequencies and to also give more layered frequency room for your higher pitch instruments by isolating bass with both high and low pass filters conservatively. These are just constructive tips Eric as I love what you did with the song. It has a nice feel-good vibe to it bro!

    Cheers!

    Hi, Joe!

    Thanks for the detailed suggestions.

First of all, I agree with you that the bass is pretty boomy. There are actually four bass instruments layered in the track. Each one is EQ'd to a different area of the frequency spectrum. But, I used the lowest range bass (also with no significant transients) to replace what. would probably normally be a pad in the project.

Three of the bass tracks are just playing whole notes, which creates the foundation I was trying to produce, but gets pretty boring. So, I added a fourth syncopated bass line that coordinates with the muted Strat track.

I did experiment with the relative levels of each of the three foundational bass tracks, trying to get a full sound. And, all four tracks are panned differently. BUT, the lowest range bass is panned centre and the others are panned about 15 left and right. I think the overall result is that the combined bass sounds completely centred, like you said and the mix sounds boomy. I also have a mid-frequency EQ boost in the master channel, and that probably doesn't help either.

The two drum tracks are panned completely centred and so are the three main vocal tracks. All the other tracks in the project are panned slight left or right. Looking over the project in Logic I can see that the overall result would be that most of the sounds in the mix would seem to be centred.

I think it's worth working on a bit more to address these issues. I can definitely clean up the bass and experiment with the panning to get this mix sounding better.

Anyway, thanks again. I do appreciate the detailed suggestions. I am pretty sure I can improve this one. :)

Thanks, Jamid. Because I chopped up the acapella and re-arranged the order of the vocal phrases, I changed the "story" of the original version by Jenna - a little bit anyway. It left me in a bit of a box, actually, so I wasn't able to end things up like she did in the original. This version probably needs another verse. But, I think the arrangement does work OK. However, the instrumentation needs work and I guess I really over-did it with processing on the vocals. But, hey, that's one of the real benefits of being here on Looperman. I can get constructive feedback and advice from other members. :)

    Thanks again.

Music is very cool yeah but that vocal sounds like it was recorded in the tunnel or bathroom or stg like that...hope, you get what I want to say...:-)
weird, strange...I think many people will argue about this ...:-)

Hi, Danke. Thanks for providing feedback on the track. If you look at the response to Nicolo's comment (HenryPascal) you will see the details about how I went overboard with processing all the vocal tracks in the project. This is NOT the way Jenna's original acapella sounds. Putting on too much reverb is a rookie error. I should know better! :)

I'm going to re-think the approach to the vocals and, as Nicolo suggested, work on the instrumentation to get more variation.

    Thanks again,

    Eric

What you did to vocals? Sounds so strange in my ears ahahah. About the instrumentation, is quite simple and ripetitive... what about some variations? (and throughtout is buried by vocals). Starting idea is really good, let this stay as it is for a while, then try some changes!

Thanks Nicolo for the helpful feedback on the track. Danke has commented on the vocals as well, so clearly I need to make some adjustments. The original acapella from Jenna is nice and clean. I guess I went overboard on the processing.

I layered three copies of the vocals, very slightly offset a few milliseconds to thicken up the vocals. I also applied different EQ settings to each of the three main vocal tracks and some delay, as well as different levels of reverb. Three are also 2 or 3 additional vocal tracks for the "embellishments", heavily processed (e.g., EQ focused on a narrow frequency band).

All of this probably is just too much processing. Too much reverb. This morning, even before I read your comment and Danke's comment I thought to myself that I should've been more judicious in how and where I layered on all the processing.

I also agree with you about the instrumentation being repetitive. I actually realized that and rationalized it by thinking that I got variation from the vocals, but on reflection I think I need to work harder on the instrumentation.

I very much appreciate your advice on the track. I'm going to work on improving it.

I provided the loops for the song if you'd like to restructure it! Real acoustic, percussion, claps and voices. No vocals but already structured for singing. Feel free to download and add vocals for non-commercial use :) Enjoy!

A huge thanks to Anna Yvette for allowing people like me to really mess up her work. This one was a bit of a challenge due to the vocals already being mixed. Unfortunately, downloads are restricted on this one per her request. Thanks for listening.
