Wow, I like this. It has a pretty strong energy right off the bat and caught my attention immediately, which is rare. If there was one critique I'd make, it'd have to be the guitar. It sounds a little too twangy imo and also the compression at 2:00 is a little too heavy imo as well but that is up to you to decide whether it's worth changing. Great work on this and I hope you get a vocalist to sing over this and make it huge!

The bass drum sounds too overpowered in this one. It might just be my headphones but it sounds like it's clipping. The snare could use a volume increase as well, imo. Good idea though!

Keep it up,

So smooth, so chill. I love this. Really groovy. Sounds like something I'd hear on the radio. Very relaxing. Masterfully mixed and the guitar solo is very attractive and what I'd call a classic haha. Great job!

I enjoy hearing the result of what I've chopped...
Guitar these days is my main instrument of choice so that is my
groove station...hahaha...

Thanks again for stopping in and your comment...

I agree with soundhound. Maybe chopping up the vocals a bit more will provide a more exciting atmosphere. Masterful execution of mixing. I like it. The words leave the mind open to think whatever "let it be" means to them :)

Wow, honestly, theres nothing to critique here, at least to me. You've executed nicely. I dig the chord progression and the drums are perfectly balanced against the spacey piano and other instruments. Loved this. What else is there to do to this one? :P Sounds done to me.

on Xyilent - Hours by XyIlent
I like this one, though I can't really explain why. Maybe it's the large, spacey synths at the intro segment. Maybe it's that I find beauty in simplicity. Though the drums could use maybe a bit more of a volume raise? Not sure. I like it because it's simple :)

In my opinion, there is a little too much compression to the point of it being hard to hear the organ and drums clearly. Maybe pulling it back just a bit might help a bit with the clarity of the overall mix. I do like that vocal though :P

as it is still to be finished i have noticed that playing it through the laptop does sound different from playing it through headphones and speakers. will defo look at the compression on the final mix and hopefully it sounds clearer
Thanks for the feed back

on Cant Even by Cestevens1783
Hey, this one is really cool! You did well mixing the loops together :P I like the synth that comes in at :14 it fills the space nicely and is not overly complex.

The gradual build is very nice, masterfully done in terms of mixing.

The transition at :44 is smooth and crisp. You're pretty good at this.

Maybe something like a splash will help fill that choppy sort of transition at 1:00 but overall, still very good.

Another splash or rise might help at 1:14 to smooth the transition because at this point the difference in loops a little noticeable. A reverse splash or rise should fix it.

So far the next segment is good, no complaints here.

The next segment is really cool. That new synth is really groovy and catchy.

at 2:14, the lead synth that appears is a little odd but I can't say it doesn't match the song. So far so good to my ears.

I guess the one thing that stands out to me are the builds at 1:27 and 2:43 are a little too loud when compared to the rest of the mix. Maybe adjusting the volume here should fix the issue.

I'd suggest adding another rise at the end segment at 2:59 to help smooth out the transition as it seems a little rough at this part.

Basically, use the rise/splash as the "glue" to mesh loops together :P

If you don't quite understand what I mean, check out my Looperman instrumental I just uploaded. It uses strictly loops from this site as well and I use the splash/reverse cymbal as a mesh for the different loops so their differences aren't so noticeable.

Anyhoo, I say it is very good. For the most part, very well-balanced with a few minor issues :)

Great work!

P.S. - My favorite instrumental part is 1:32...The way you worked those synths. Stellar. Literally took my breath away, it has that chord play that tugs at my heart, idk why lol.

Wow, this is beautiful. Those chord progressions...Ahhhh. I love it. I feel like overall the song could have been mixed a little better (too much reverb imo, might've benefited from a more up-close sense and the drums are a little too far back, for instance). Is there any way I can get stems to this song? I'd love to try and mix it. Let me know :)

mstmusic replied 10th Jul 2015 - 10 years ago
Hello, thanks to your offer. Honestly, it's an effect of my hard work at improving my mix skills. I was pretty satisfied from the results, but it still needs some improvements. Unfortunately I thought I've done all I could and I haven't had any idea what to do more. I'm releasing it on my new album "Progression" and I've decided that I won't be trying to mix it again, because planned release date is 24th July (HERE: https://msoundtech.bandcamp.com/album/progression ). You could try to work with it by remixing this (I can provide stems, vocals). Me and Iti would be glad to hear remixes of this tune in the future.

Thanks, Michael

wellll usually you get stems from the original artist :D

the instruments/vocals are exported individually so that you have as much creative freedom as possible

Wow, I really like this one. Like seriously. Is that you singing? Is that you playing guitar? :D There are some basic mixing mistakes that you've made that if remedied could make this song really sound professional. I really dig the relaxed feeling of the vocal. Hi ER,
Yes that is me on everything, vocals, acoustic, bass.
It was such a lofi recording :)
I was looking back at my old demos and found this one,
I am going to have to dig out the cubase project for it now to export the stems, when I do I will send them on.
So thanks for considering having a go at it for me...

I think it was done with an Alesis USB MultiMix a few years ago and either an SM57 mic or a Audio Technica AT2020 I had, the bass is just an old Epiphone shortscale DI'ed....

Big respect to you and Looperman, I love this site...

That drumbeat is very catchy if I must say so myself haha. Nicely balanced and the bass has a presence that is just right, not overbearing and not too quiet. Everything sits quite nicely in this mix. I have no complaints with this one, which is rare for me to say. Oh, in my opinion the vocal could have been pulled back just a hair so that way it doesnt cut so roughly through the mix. Besides that, everything else sounds pretty darn awesome. Love it.

Hello ER!
Good to hear from you, thank you for listening and leave a nice comment ;)

"That drumbeat is very catchy if I must say so myself"
True.I had to synthesize the kick from scratch to make it sound as i wanted it to sound, and i do that all the time now since samples usually don't work very well in my music i need specific frequencies to make it gel with the bass which is also made from basic synthesis.
In fact i synthesize every sound except when i need real instruments and the drums as i like the sound of real recorded drums (snares , hats, crashes, toms etc...not kicks though).

"Nicely balanced and the bass has a presence that is just right"
I agree im very pleased with the bass on this piece.

Thanks for your input on the vocal, i will do another sweep through the track to recheck the levels before the final export.
Vocals and low frequency elements are always the hardest for me to control.
Your feedback is very much appreciated ;)

Best Regards
WB

on Xyilent - Theory of The Universe by XyIlent
I feel the vocal would sound cooler with a LPF and HPF so that it feels like its coming out of an old phone :P The intro is cool. Sounds spacey and large, which is definitely cool. Ahhhhhh, you and your classic synths. I love it. Feel like I'm going to the moon while listening this haha. I feel almost like the vocal message clashes with what the song is presenting - the music feels all spacey and science-y and the vocal sounds like something that belongs on an orchestral track. At least in my opinion. :P As always, excellent mixing, cool synths and nice and simple chord melodies, just like I like em'. :)

Cheers,

ER

XyIlent replied 13th Jul 2015 - 10 years ago
You know.. ive always wanted to use that effect ive always tried it on synths fading in at the start of a song but never implemented it into a final song, didnt think of doing it to the vocals though..

" your classic synths "

yeah love those synths they suit the waay i want to make the track perfectly haha.

" belongs on an orchestral track "

Yeah i can see what you mean, dont think it will ever happen but its cool to imagine lmao

Glad you enjoyed man, thanks for the in-depth comment too. Ill need to return the favour soon haha

I think the song is clipping. You might want to try putting a limiter on it so it eliminates the harsh upper frequencies. Very interesting beat though, I actually like it :)

hotribs replied 9th Jul 2015 - 10 years ago
Yeah, I Ignored the limiter on this one, so it might be clipping. Can't help it though... I love how ridiculous it sounds in this mix. Suppose I'll have to readjust everything again when I add vocals anyway. Not looking forward to that!

Wow, how did you do those cool effects to the synths? That's SICK. Awesome, I mean. Wow. Very ambient, a little on the odd side but that's not a bad thing :P Very original work. One thing that stood out to me was the drums were a little loud and harsh on the high end for me, but thats just me :P Maybe turning them down just a hair will help allow you to raise the overall volume without making it uncomfortable for the listener.
