Good sound, I dig the mixing. Great job on that. I feel like there needs to be more low-end though. And oooooh you should get a boss rapper to collab with you on this one :P
It'll take the song to new heights :P

Thanks ER! Appreciate the feedback! I'm still looking around for a rapper that will fit it stylistically, but I will be sure to add more low end!

on Rolling River Old Demo by shaydoc
Wow, I really like this one. Like seriously. Is that you singing? Is that you playing guitar? :D There are some basic mixing mistakes that you've made that if remedied could make this song really sound professional. I really dig the relaxed feeling of the vocal. Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe I can remix/master this for you :P I'll have to see if my schedule allows :P

Haha....
Hi ER,
Yes that is me on everything, vocals, acoustic, bass.
It was such a lofi recording :)
I was looking back at my old demos and found this one,
I am going to have to dig out the cubase project for it now to export the stems, when I do I will send them on.
So thanks for considering having a go at it for me...

I think it was done with an Alesis USB MultiMix a few years ago and either an SM57 mic or a Audio Technica AT2020 I had, the bass is just an old Epiphone shortscale DI'ed....

Big respect to you and Looperman, I love this site...

on WoozyBeats - Dimention by WoozyBeats
That drumbeat is very catchy if I must say so myself haha. Nicely balanced and the bass has a presence that is just right, not overbearing and not too quiet. Everything sits quite nicely in this mix. I have no complaints with this one, which is rare for me to say. Oh, in my opinion the vocal could have been pulled back just a hair so that way it doesnt cut so roughly through the mix. Besides that, everything else sounds pretty darn awesome. Love it.

Hello ER!
Good to hear from you, thank you for listening and leave a nice comment ;)

"That drumbeat is very catchy if I must say so myself"
True.I had to synthesize the kick from scratch to make it sound as i wanted it to sound, and i do that all the time now since samples usually don't work very well in my music i need specific frequencies to make it gel with the bass which is also made from basic synthesis.
In fact i synthesize every sound except when i need real instruments and the drums as i like the sound of real recorded drums (snares , hats, crashes, toms etc...not kicks though).

"Nicely balanced and the bass has a presence that is just right"
I agree im very pleased with the bass on this piece.

Thanks for your input on the vocal, i will do another sweep through the track to recheck the levels before the final export.
Vocals and low frequency elements are always the hardest for me to control.
Your feedback is very much appreciated ;)

Best Regards
WB

on Xyilent - Theory of The Universe by XyIlent
I feel the vocal would sound cooler with a LPF and HPF so that it feels like its coming out of an old phone :P The intro is cool. Sounds spacey and large, which is definitely cool. Ahhhhhh, you and your classic synths. I love it. Feel like I'm going to the moon while listening this haha. I feel almost like the vocal message clashes with what the song is presenting - the music feels all spacey and science-y and the vocal sounds like something that belongs on an orchestral track. At least in my opinion. :P As always, excellent mixing, cool synths and nice and simple chord melodies, just like I like em'. :)

Cheers,

ER

You know.. ive always wanted to use that effect ive always tried it on synths fading in at the start of a song but never implemented it into a final song, didnt think of doing it to the vocals though..

" your classic synths "

yeah love those synths they suit the waay i want to make the track perfectly haha.

" belongs on an orchestral track "

Yeah i can see what you mean, dont think it will ever happen but its cool to imagine lmao

Glad you enjoyed man, thanks for the in-depth comment too. Ill need to return the favour soon haha

Thanks man

I think the song is clipping. You might want to try putting a limiter on it so it eliminates the harsh upper frequencies. Very interesting beat though, I actually like it :)

ER
hotribs
hotribs replied 9th Jul 2015 - 11 years ago
Yeah, I Ignored the limiter on this one, so it might be clipping. Can't help it though... I love how ridiculous it sounds in this mix. Suppose I'll have to readjust everything again when I add vocals anyway. Not looking forward to that!

Thanks man!

on Through the windows of the night train by silverman
Wow, how did you do those cool effects to the synths? That's SICK. Awesome, I mean. Wow. Very ambient, a little on the odd side but that's not a bad thing :P Very original work. One thing that stood out to me was the drums were a little loud and harsh on the high end for me, but thats just me :P Maybe turning them down just a hair will help allow you to raise the overall volume without making it uncomfortable for the listener.

Cheers,

ER

What sound libraries do you use for the strings? I like them a lot. They sound organic - which I suspect they are.

on Let Me Breathe ft Stephanie Kay by Jmanshizzil
OOOOH. I love it. If you get those drums right, oh my goodness. This song will be amazing. That simple chord progression is so beautiful and you execute them via cool synths that I really dig. Very tastefully done. At the moment, the only thing is the drums sound too far back. :)

Jmanshizzil
Jmanshizzil replied 13th Jul 2015 - 11 years ago
I was trying to add space to the drums to make them sound like they were recorded live, but mixing acoustic drums with electronic synths is very difficult! I appreciate the kind words! I'll try to fix those drums up! :D

Though I think the vocal at the end could use some more reverb, sounds a little too flat for my ears. :)

Haha, I get told that a lot. Actually Adam Young was a major inspiration for me! I do a bit of things, the way you sing, a bit of tasteful modulation, and some compression do nicely!

on A Sundays dance by Loentjuh81
Wow, not bad! You're much better than many producers I've met back home. You definitely have a knack for this. The mixing is tastefully done. Though I wouldn't say this falls into the "Dance" genre (maybe Trance?), it definitely sounds pretty good; please don't take that lightly :)

Thank you. I find it hard to name the genre as I just getting familiar with electronic music...there are way too many genre's with only so little that seperates them.
In general I thought Dance, or Electronic Dance Music (EDM) was the main genre?

on Needle In The Hay Ft VSlimm and FAnalysis by SeriouslyJoking
Hey there, SJ! :)

That piano is really interesting haha. The bassline behind it add a strong punchiness that I really like :P The vocal at the beginning is a little too loud and clips at the loudest part - might want to bring that down just a bit or add a compressor to even it out. The vocal sounds really cool :D Really big and spacey. You did great making it fit to the music imo :)

Cheers!

Hi ER!
Thanks for the feedback - the "piano" yes...ehrm I needed some piano in my life after this long musical break and this is what came out of me. =D
I could probably replace some of it later, with some other fake instrument. :P

About the clipping in the beginning, noted. Thanks again!

Cheers/ SJ =)

The vocal is a little quiet for my tastes. I think if you were to raise the volume of the female vocal just a bit it would sound great. The male vocal is good.

on Use Your Imagination by Cestevens1783
I really like this. Honestly. Though I think maybe the filtered vocals don't quite fit the rest of the song. I think the song would stand great on it's own without them, but I think the clapping/cheering crowd is awesome and you should keep it. Can you send me stems for this and I can give it a full mix? :D message me at epicrecordmusic@gmail.com and we can discuss the details, if you're interested :P

on Im A Beast powderjaypella by Purge
You have some cool instrumentation on this one. It's very catchy. The vocals (in my humble opinion), could be just a HAIR louder. Like literally a hair. They're on the point of being too soft. Hmmmm, it's so close haha. I can't decide. :P That is just something that I thought when listening to this chill tune. Great work.

on Walking On A Dream-Enrico Ludwick Tropical Remix by 15ludwicke
I think with a proper mix-down, this will sound awesome. There are some percussion instruments that are too loud/flat sounding but I'd imagine that can be fixed with the proper treatment. I would suggest trying to make the vocals larger via reverb and/or delay. It feels a little too stiffly dropped in the middle and doesn't quite match the large feeling of the overall song.

But the instrumentation is really cool. I dig it. Good work. I look forward to hearing a finished product of this one.

I think something like a splash to help climax the sections at 1:37 and 3:30 would help as well, it's a little disappointing as it feels like it's going to get louder and there's nothing there to satisfy the listener's attention haha.

I'm listening to this and it's very good but one thing that seemed to be missing was the presence of a a bass. I think you could definitely up the power of this already-great song (I love the orchestral/choir stuff) by adding some low-end punch :P

on Family Business Intro ft Kami-Kazi by FinesseNV
I noticed one thing that really stood out: The vocals are too loud when put over the mix. Try bring them down just a bit so that the overall volume can be raised and enjoyed. I have to turn it down so that I can listen to the vocals at a comfortable volume, but then the mix behind it is too quiet.

on The Grim Reaper by Byleth
The dischord at the beginning has a very interesting sense of confusion with it. The electric guitar sounds a little weak in my opinion. I think it may be a little quiet as well in the second part of the song. Might want to raise the volume as it gets a little lost in the mix.
