hey, Nice one. I am into a dance electronic mood for a while and think you did very good work here. Vocals are bit strange indeed but they add a very fine colour and nice melodic variety contrasting to repetitive elements.

on why cant they stand the sunlight by doudei
hey, I really like what you've just done - these strings and pads change slightly the harmonc structure of the song. It is more like a 'space music' now.
The mix is louder but still very very transparent. Adding more compression on rhodes was an excellent choice!
Beautiful song and great production. Love it.

many thanks for your reply! Yes, of course it would be better to simply pick up guitar and correct that part. I am not too much into the autotuning and pitch correcting as well - it may ruin the natural sound and the 'original' message for the most part.
But overall it could be 'listenable' and even consonant in here without correcting notes - it's quite subiective from person to person. It blends in the huge reverb anyway so it is just a detail.
Thanks again for your thoughts - it's always appreciated!

Thanks for the reply again friend. Like I said, I completely ignored the chords of the guitar when working on this... I find it pretty natural for a musician (especially one as experienced as ShortBus) to play in a way that hints at or suggests a different key than that which is integral to the song. It is very common in many styles of music from classical and avant garde to blues and jazz. Your mention of the reverb is interesting to me, as aside from the percussion, I found the stems to be a bit on the dry side which is nice and helpful when mixing. Not saying that there wasn't any reverb on the guitars originally, but I almost got the impression that it was natural reverb captured in the recordings. It can be really tough to avoid that when recording an acoustic guitar. Thanks for the good discussion!

on Its Your World by WongKiShoo
hey, this is probably first time when I comment on a trap song here. Anyway the vocal part keeps my attention throughout. Good bassline corresponding with vocals (they sound Beyonce-like). But on my system any bass-line can possibly fit the same upper structure and vice-versa so I do not know if it's useful:(

The only 'problem' I noticed is that the simplicity of your arrangement is owerpowered by vocals. My personal preference is to have much simple vocals here. That's why I preffered your 'Heartbroken' to the radio version (your version contains vocals sounding much more 'natural' to me). I made some instrumental arrangement around the acapella last week (different genre of course) but I always find a bit artificial and tricky working this way. So maybe you could try simply an other electronic feel on this acapella or just leave it and move to the next track? You can always try to play different chords along the pella.

I tried many times. Here's one version:

hope it's useful.

I enjoyed your track.

on Psychogenic Sammich by Spivkurl
hi again.
I love this track.
Your entire album (containing also this song) was probably the one of the most inspiring things I came across when joining this site! Your approach is very uniqe and interesting when it comes to construct powerful basslines (0:49 and 2:48!).
There's some a little bit of instrumental improvisation at 1:18, 1:48 and from 2:03 - I like that! this piano melody you're playing from 1:18 sets this glitchy track more in the traditional tonalities. There's so much going on underneath all 'electronic weird sounds' - I mean the cheap lead and subtle piano lines! I can feel a connection with this work. I'd label it unique once again and very creative.

I love the 'reprise' part (when all the elements go crazy - 3:17) and very classic ending. Are you playing a classical piano music as well?

This is great because I am able to see things different now and more 'in details' than when I am just listening to the album.
Very nice work! Alex

Hey friend, thank you very much for the inspiring to read comment! I'm pretty happy with this work, and it's definitely one of the more creative tracks on this album. The piano parts are played my me and improvisational... I was finally able to get a piano earlier this year thanks to my wife, she works at a hotel and they got a new piano, so we just had to pay to transport it. These are the first recordings of it that I used in a song. It's before I started getting it tuned up and stuff, but I think it has a really nice character to the sound. Your compliments on my bass lines are nice to hear, as bass is one of my favorite things to design. I think on my good stereo that this is one of the best sounding tracks I've made, especially the stereo field, it just comes out at you like it's flowing from the speakers. It was all just a freeform composition which turned out nicely, so I'm happy that you feel a connection with it. I have rearranged my main studio room so that I can more easily incorporate live recordings, so hopefully I'll be putting out more things that are in your listening preferences. Thank you for the comment!

Spivkurl
Spivkurl replied 26th Oct 2014 - 11 years ago
Hey, atleast you didn't just say "cool track" and leave it at that, so don't worry! As far as the key change goes, I completely ignored it when mixing and mastering this. I don't really feel like it is a mixing engineers place to question the composition of someone's song, more to focus on the strengths of each track and help them work together to form a polished piece. There's nothing wrong with a key change within a song any way. I think that this idea is what is missing from a lot of popular mixes these days, as evidenced by the overuse of pitch correction software. It takes much effort to use those when there is a key change, and most people don't even bother. They just put the track through a sieve which removes the captured moment of the recording and performance. I too have been guilty of this at times, but I'm training myself to accept my mistakes/intentions as well as those of others. If the composer or performer didn't like how a recording turned out, they should retake it. If it doesn't fit the key of the music, then it should be easy enough to transpose. Thank you for your comments!

hi azzyko, the chord progression is really good here just like any chord progression. Only the actual preformance can ruin it.
Here's the simple progression played in a very fine way:

Thank you!

I checked the video and it's really good example. String gives extra effect there but besides that guitarist did great performance.

On the other hand, chord progression in intro of this piece is so beautiful, so performance is not much important. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0U73NRSIkw

hi, I really like this one. The loops are skillfully and tastefully combined. I wasn't listening to many of your tracks so far but I sort of assume you're using them a lot in your productions.
Nice mallet percussion used here - I like that! Reminds me always of some of Steve Reich's minimal-music.
This one is melodic and 'cimematic' indeed yet still very energetic. My only suggestion would be you could simply fade-in and fade-out the song.
Very nice work and really good soundtrack. Alex

I appreciate the props for the way I constructed the track, it means a lot coming from someone of you caliber.

hi Tim, very good track. For sure no so much from my preffered stylistic zone but I like the production. The kind of d&b reminds me of some tracks by GramoChopin - you may check out some of his works if you like.
I like the ambient strangeness from about 0:56 - it appears again later in the track.
It is very nice put together - you have really good taste when comes to combine loops!
Nice day, Alex

Cheers Alex, it's playing now! I wonder what that was? He he, I like weird. Glad you like it. I have a few more D&B's. They were a side project and a different album. An experiment as D&B's not normally my style. It's good to get out of your comfort zone sometimes though ;)

hi again. I noticed you'are using the same interesting panning technique here as well. This kraftwerk-like synth sequence is again loop or you also create synth lines like this?
The vocals are nicely blended into the recording.
It is a kind of experimental track with some interesting story behind it. Very special music, not easy-listening but I like it. Alex

on Deptford Moonlight Serenade by DanceDemagogue
hi again. There is so much going on here regarding to musical events of course - I like the movement of drums and the panning you added to them. You could label it 'chillout' as well cause it has some nice chord progression throughout.
I love it's atmosphere and weirdness: the part with the rain reminds me a bit of 'Somnium' by Robert Rich.

Very cool track! It is a favourite of me. Alex

Thanks Alex. This is actually one of my personal favourites. It's quite emotive thinking back to that night and some of the tings that happened. It was also a lot of work. Trying to keep such a long song interesting is quite a challenge. You're right with the labeling, I'm always wondering what genre I should put it in. :)

This is definitely a dark-coloured music. Just like your 'Dark-Dub'.
I really like the sound-image of this song. The arpeggiated synth-line which drives entire track is excellent - very good old-electronic vibes! I like that!
Nice mixture of latin drumming, old school synths and some strange industrial noises.
I find your work here very creative - really good work on this one!

Thanks Alex. The 80's were my time being born in 61. I DJ'd all the way through them (and half of the 90's). So it's no wonder they left their mark on me. I've always loved electronic, right back to early Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Tim Blake etc. but when Industrial kicked in I fell in love, lol. There's a lot more on its way :)

on why cant they stand the sunlight by doudei
hi doudei, I am a fan of your playing. I wish I could also do that in such an easy and nimble way as you did here - my touch seems to be quite different - more 'in the keyboard' and much heavier, something à la Keith Jarrett. Thats because of my former classical training.

Very fine retro-styled track, lot of fun. I enjoyed the production and the sound quality you get on your tracks. Congrats and Best, Alex

on Opioid by StaticNomad
hi, I am enjoying much your new track - the way you almost stop sometimes and then start again effortlessly. Some strange sound you introduce from about 3:14 is really psychodelic something like Osiric Tentacles would do. I like the weirdness when the pad comes in from about 4:00 - an another dimension appears then. From 4:51 it is some very nice psychodelic feel - nice synthesizers. Epic track to the end with some heavier guitars. Perfect gentle outro and perfect track! That's all I can say after the first listening. I will return for more again.

I read your reply to MAVstudio and really doubt that my comments are useful so far - sometimes your replies are far much better reviews on your own stuff than the actual comment is in fact. Since I joined this site I do not think of 'improvement' really - but it's always good to know when somenthing can be fixed and I appreciate it anyway.
I think to really progress you could simply try to do something radically different. Work in reverse or play the random notes and feel ok with it. Use odd meters or unknown exotic scales. I say this only because I am working currently on some acoustic track with the vocals and it is just amazing to me that I am really able to reach some unknown territories and play even a kind of a 'jazz ballad' for example. But I know that if I want to make significant progress I need to take some time practicing the music. This sounds ridiculously obvious and banal.
Anyway I can get to some point with listening when even 'just sounds' are perfect as they are so as long as the improvement is considered it is needed. There's no really such a thing like 'improvement' in music.
I hope it makes sense.
Very great work this time! Congratulations, Alex

Hello again.

Yes, the lead around 3:14 is my old Korg Z1 synthesizer – the only hardware synth I have ever owned (or used properly). I haven’t used its internal sounds for many years (almost all my synth stuff is Reason devices) but that part (and quite a few others) was recorded maybe around 2002. I can’t remember.

It was good fun playing that part and controlling the cutoff frequency using the Z1’s X-Y pad with my left hand. Great lead sound I should use again.

I only played a couple of tracks to one of the Ozric Tentacles many years ago (the flute player) and the tracks weren’t very good so I’d love to play them some of my more recent, much better music. I’m convinced the Ozrics would like them.

Yes, around 4:00 we get 2 evolving pad sounds that make the track more mysterious and give the feel that it is building to something. Which, of course, it is.

Your comments are very useful. You are easily one of the best reviewers on the site and have contributed a lot in a short time being here (as well as lots of quickly made skilful music).

“sometimes your replies are far much better reviews on your own stuff than the actual comment”

I agree. I try to write things that might be interesting to people who are really into what I do and would like to know more. Also, I use replies to express my feelings as I think it’s important to try to make sense of what you do.

One person once commented on one of my tracks: ”I'm enjoying the music and reading the comments and your answers - it's like a little booklet of musical knowledge combined for both ears and eyes.” http://www.looperman.com/tracks/detail/147824

Yes, music is a lot about feel and being in the moment and going with the groove but there’s so much more to it than that. Sometimes you have to really think in a very organisational, strategic, sort of business world planning kind of way if you want to get better and do things you haven’t done before. So, analysing what I have done and can still do can help a lot.

You improvement suggestions are good. I only know two scales (major and minor) though I never consciously use either (or any modes, I don’t know any). I just feel all the notes and use zero music theory.

“Use odd meters”

Yes. I’ve still never done a 3/4 track so really must do that sometime. But I use triplet and shuffle grooves quite often. I have some EZ MIDI drum files of drumming in 6/8, 7/8, even 11/8 (!) so should try to use those sometime.

I also need to learn more instruments. Cello would be cool though I would want an electric cello (so I can put it through effects and don’t have to record it on microphone) but they are very expensive.

I should also learn a really unusual instrument as that would appeal to my unconventional character. More work with vocals would also add a lot to my music (and mean I don’t have to play so many riffs). So much progress to make!

Thanks again for your useful thoughts.

on Sensuality by crucethus
hi again, very nice one -I am liking the percussions in the intro and all very gentle drums throughout. The 'frog-like' kind of synth bassline definitely reminds me of your 'Bedroom Games'. I like the placement of instruments in the recording spectrum too. Very fine synth lead from 2:37 - nice played, something like Tangerine Dream - a kind of a guitar almost!
Very soft and calming sounds! Alex

You are correct about Bedroom games. Sensuality pre-dates bedroom games by a bit, but was my attempt at capturing the glory sound of sensuality. I have a radio review where the announcers critique the song and say that I play my synths like a guitarist and can evoke emotion through the usage of my synths.

on Circular Motion by StaticNomad
hi again and thank you for your reply.

I didn't realize you made it 13 years ago - now I can see it is on the desription also... But anyway this track sounds far better from some of the parts of your contemporary productions!
Maybe it's not so 'overproduced' but just radiating - full of freshness and creativity!

'(...)no EQ, compression or mastering used here (...)'

This may sound a bit ridiculous to you... but I actually find a lack of processing very attractive as I am trying also to get rid of it as much as I can! For non 'comertially-oriented' music with a very small public that's ok I think. The production is perfect to me. There's no 'punch' from drums and the mix sounds really natural with a lot of space between instruments.

'I cant say it starts at any point'

I am strongly influenced by 'nonduality' stuff. That's why I love the eastern spiritual music. Circular motion appears for instance as 'sufi whirling dervishes' in sufi tradition... But apart of all that there is a kind of endless continuity in motion in this song and I love it.
StaticNomad
StaticNomad replied 17th Oct 2014 - 11 years ago
Hi. Yes, I know what you mean about this track sounding better than some of my more recent productions. That is a difficult and painful thing for me to admit and it’s something that has bothered me for many years. Yes, I think lots of stuff I have done since is very good yet this track just has some sort of special, mystical ingredient that makes it special.

I’m not sure if my more recent music is overproduced. Yes, I do use a lot of effects but I try to use them only ever in an appropriate way. Maybe I need to think a lot harder about that and try to keep things simpler. But it’s so hard to know, isn’t it?

I guess this track does has some sort of connection with 'sufi whirling dervishes' but in a much more modern electronic style rather than a more traditional, acoustic Middle Eastern style.

I will try much harder to work out why this track is so good and see if I can learn from it. If I were able to open up the original files, maybe I could try doing a remix of it as that would be fun (though probably also quite difficult).

Thanks again for your considered thoughts.

Hi again. I’m sure you’re the only person on here who comments on all the tracks I recommend to you.

“I cant say it starts at any point”

I don’t really know what that means. It starts at the start – with that opening synth bassline.

I agree that the track could be much longer. But I have so many very long tracks that it’s good to have some shorter ones. I made this about 13 years ago when I hadn’t developed as many production techniques and didn’t have so much equipment or software.

Now I find it easy to make very long tracks and have to try to stop them from being even longer. Thanks for listening to what might be my greatest ever track (it’s hard to say).
