In response to BOD's comment, I completely agree with you on your approach. My music theory prof used to say learn the rules, then break them all you want. As long you can explain why you did it and it makes musical sense. This makes musical sense, good work.

Super! The whole package just sounds mighty fine. I love your creativity, always so unique. I've read some Kurt back in the day, will have to check him again. I posted that track I sent you by the way, not featured, having trouble with the mix:(

I like the electricity sound, breaks the norms. You might consider rendering some of the MIDI to wavs. You can then stretch to twice or 4X the time (or the reverse) to get interesting sonic information (same with pitch transposition and stretching settings), or use them as an optional or additional layer with or without additional FX (or as a vocoding source, or as a sidechain information source).

Sometime I will write MIDI, render it as a wav, and then use another MIDI content as reference points to place chops or sweeteners, using the rendered wav.

Any combination of these kinds of tricks will exploit a larger palette without much effort or an increase in written content. In other words, efficient "tricks" for avant garde sounds.

You can also render the entire song, so that you have a choppable master handy if you want global FX for a small part (like tailored reverb during a pause), without having to wire a bunch of busses into a premaster channel.

Food for thought, faved, keep it up.

Thanks Bod - I do like to try to find the boundary line and test it a little in the process of learning the software and crafting a track. I'm with you around bouncing the tracks to mostly bounce to audio and do + also double track usually more than half of my tracks, then treat them differently and pan them differently AND as I use mpc as daw I often use the half speed function - even doubled up which does as you suggest provide a quick pathway to alternative sounds that will fit with the original. I also like to add harmoniser, delay and or other effects, often on the last beat, hit or note of a phrase and blend them in a more or less subtle way. Thanks so much for your feedback to me and others I have found that your comments and ideas have been really helpful in my learning and experiments. In my other life my own work in therapy is based on building on what is already present and working and to try to pay attention to all of the elements that make up 'what works' and I think that attitude is helpful in tune craft too - whether it's for someone at your level of expertise or a relative novice like myself hey : ) Thanks Again

Oh so that's what Vonnegut sounds like! Cool. Not quite I expected. The e-piano and sax sounds are perfect for this track, gives it a very jazzy, smokey, atmosphere. I actually disagree with V, I don't think the bass synth is too much. Though panning it around might be a cool effect. The combination of that and the instrument voices create the effect which makes the song unique.

pseudoble replied 24th Jun 2022 - 3 years ago
Hey Killick - thanks for the warm feedback - the electric piano is from Air - velvet - one of their presets then double tracked each track treated differently and panned left and right. The Vst sax is from decent sampler and there's lots of guitar in there too (with multitracked Neural DSP plugins on the guitars giving some lovely different sounds). The bass synth is from a modular synth present with some percs, there is another bass line using outlooks substance bass engine (as well as outlooks exhale) and then there is other percussion from Akai mpc drums ...

hey Ian, i really like this the spoken vocal is great the music and mix are delightful, i like the distorted bass, it adds texture to the melodic charm, but like ValveDriver its distracting playing right through i would also chop it up, 2-3 smaller sections maybe run a fade in and a fade out on the sample or an envelope to dampen it so its not in your face so much. but i love your creativity and always pushing the boundaries and delivering original material, you are becoming the DON on spoken too mate, just that tweak for me, but again personal choice only dictating my judgement, keep being you mate

pseudoble replied 23rd Jun 2022 - 3 years ago
Thanks for the warm feedback mate - see reply to V for the work around required for the distorted bass sound ; )

I love the sax and the Rhodes in this! They definitely create a chilled atmosphere. Overall, it almost has a bit of an Angelo Badalamenti vibe.
I like it. I think, though, that the distorted bass synth in the background being played through the entire thing is a little distracting. It makes it difficult to hear the cymbals and tambourine. I would chop it up and place it in more strategic areas in the spaces between, ya know? Or, if not that, then bring it down in the mix and pan it back and forth. But, that's just my opinion. Take it for what it's worth. Either way, it's a piece to be proud of.

Take care.
V.

Hey - thanks for that - already played around with that sound a bit and wasnt happy with the result but I do agree. Part of the issue is that the track was built around it and its a modular synth that is constructed as a multi - so it has bass and perc's and a lot of the background rhythm goes when I cut it up - so I'd need to reconstruct that (pain in the arse) never mind hey - move on to the next experiment : )

The beauty in that is a dead end for one night be a beginning for another. And vice versa. I love tryin new or unfamiliar techniques and sounds, just innovate for no reason other than it's dope. Even though the therapy music has given me in life is by itself enough reason

I like this alot, as well man. Some of your arrangements call out to me a bit lol. If U have any dead ends or unfinished pieces lying around, if you want to shoot em my way, maybe I can add a bit of my own paint and see what happens from there?

great creativity Ian love the spoken word mate, great fx added makes you listen intently the guitar is cool and the drum simplistic sparse instrumentation but manipulated so cool, well done mate. im struggling for inspiration at the minute, been a tough month, but keep checking in, looking for a spark, get out of this current mood ive found myself in

Hey mate - thanks for the warm feedback - sorry to hear you are in a bit of a fugue (the psychological rather than musical kind) Im quietly confident that such a creative and crafty old (but not as old as me) bugger will soon find his mojo. I like the maxim when things appear to be going slowly slow down ... good (but paradoxical) reminder to focus on what is already present and that there is often no real need to work too hard (just hard enough) ... if only I could remember that myself ... well as the poet in my track says 'one of these days' : ) I'm in your corner mate.
All good things

what a nice trippy and relaxing vibe. Vocs remind me of a sci fi film where the computer has artificial intelligence and is determined to annihilate its creator, come to think of it that might happen. Really cool track i enjoyed it immensely faved. Best regards Robbie.

pseudoble
pseudoble replied 28th May 2022 - 3 years ago
Hey Chris - thanks mate - not a lot of thought or time when into that vox or lyric (like none!) but the track needed something to make it a bit more interesting - I can hear where I could improve this one a bit now but it's just some fun so probably wont bother. Hope you are the family are doing well - must be getting a little cool there now - stay warm : )
