Ahhhhhhhh...this is frolicking-in-a-Field-of-Flowers-in-the-summertime GOOD!!!!! I love, love, love acoustic music. It's so pure and uncomplicated. The guitar work is magic, and the piano is light and fun. Thanks for sharing it!
soon as i heard this i had a melody floating around in my head. very tempting if i could find the time, to try singing something to it. maybe even cyberflare's lyrics above since he kindly shared them. anyway, a very enjoyable track which to me has a great lightness and a hint of melancholy to it.
Thanks zootman! If you ever want to add words just let me know and I'll send you the tracks. The lyrics I had written were too serious to go with the 'lightness' of the track so I opted to make it an instrumental instead.
gorgeous, timeless, the kind of groove that slips under the skin and there’s a natural high and life just sways for a little bit. it’s a gift, pal. if there’s a heaven joey and deedee are singing.
Timeless was how I described the chord changes to someone earlier in the day, you can go back decades and find these chord changes in songs. To me this sounds like a song from the 50's.
That is a Martin D10e Sapele acoustic guitar from the Road Series line of guitars Martin put out for the working musician, cheap but with decent quality.
All the acoustic guitar was played by me for this song, no loops used.
I've always loved simple songs. The Everly Bros and Buddy Holly wrote the simplest, most wonderful songs and they were so basic in the chords, changes and lyrics. They have so much soul, depth and meaning yet they are written so that a beginner musician could play and perform them. I tried to do the same here, the old 'keep it simple stupid' method.
brilliant. great vocal performance and song, respect. by the way, i thought the horns sounded fine. I've been struggling to find a decent brass vst, any recommendations? gonna have to find the movie tonight.
Folks, if you never watched Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, I urge you to watch it. One of the funniest movie I've seen in years. Awesome rendition Wayne, bravo for outstanding performance. Thank you for sharing my brother.
I agree, worth watching, you'll laugh a lot for sure. But watching the Walk the Line movie first will make it even funnier because you'll see all the references to Johnny Cash's life in that film.
Not overly happy with the midi horns but it gets the point across. Fun to put together.
Outstanding, Wayne! I loved that movie and really loved this song. You did it justice. Great instrumentation from the horns to the drums. Vox was just perfect for the song. I'd forgotten that it was John C. Reilly who sang the original. I think I'm going to have to watch the movie again, it's been a while. Well done, Wayne. Stay warm in that surf.
As I was putting this together last week I bought the movie and have watched it a couple times since, pretty funny movie. It's up there with School of Rock as far as fun, lighthearted music movies go. Plus the music is great in it, bonus!
Here's John C. Riley at the NPR Tiny Desk Concert with some friends playing behind the desk, great podcast, btw.
We get awesome surf, big surf spot at the inlet. Enjoy your chop! Getting a metal detector this week, be spending mornings and evenings at the beach diggin' pirate treasure and pull tabs.
Thanks! It went well in the Walk Hard movie, actually. Funny movie, a comedic satire on the Johnny Cash movie Walk the Line. It is in a minor key so it gives it that "tarentino" feel to it I suppose.
Haha.
I was listening to this and before I knew it my shoulders were moving.
Summer-y indeed!
Summer cannot come too soon, I am so ready for it!
Cool vibes going here. :-)
I hear things that need fixing like track volume levels. I would also go back and arrange some things differently, change some vocal stabs, add better guitar licks...
The drum loops I feel would have limited me to some extent if I spent the usual 2 weeks mixing but that was sorta good for this exercise in a way as I didn't have to fuss too much with them.
Hey Mark! Something quick and a little out of my comfort zone, reggae isn't something I play often.
All the tracks were one takes and 2 quick mixes. Little rough in spots where I could easily go back and adjust/fix but that wasn't the purpose of the song.
Probably only the 3rd reggae song I ever put together and considering the tracking took about half an hour I think it came out ok. I was thinking more of this one for music behind a surf video, instrumental rather than full of words, background music to some cool surf clips.
I know the songs his style of playing is suited for when I put these tracks together. When he jumps on a track I feel confident he will play what is needed for the track. I just noodle on electric guitar as it's not what I feel the most comfortable playing but Jim attacks it with reckless abandon and I like that style. He even surprises himself when he hears what I put together from his tracking sessions.
His wife was walking around the house singing "Uh Oh Ee Uu!" after she heard it, ha! She liked the song when it came out too I guess.
We certainly have a similar musical thought process that when we record we just seem to get it done the way we are both pleased with the outcome, except for my mixing skills. he
Definitely got a rocky, country blues thing going on. Great live guitar take too. Play it with a live band in the right kind of bar & the audience would love it. This is a very clean, professional sounding track. Great job.
Someone on youtube did a professional video for it filmed in L.A. where they were able to digitally remove all the vehicles on the highways and streets while people skateboarded down empty once busy roads. But the guy took it down, bummer.
Appreciate the comments, sorry for the late response.
Hey Wayne, what a track! Its not really something I'd listen to normally, but 11/10 for content and production, its just perfect for that style of music, very well done to you and your crew sir!

Chris Hein Horns, a bit pricey but pretty decent, used them for a while on an older computer I had.
