Very energetic and funky sound. Damn..one of the better tracks here on LM, no doubt. You can hear the feel and love for music in this track. Love it how the bass and e-guitar flirt with eachother. Fav as it goes!
Probably one of the best collabs I've ever heard here on LM
and this is top class on every level. I can only confirm
what the others have already said and those are facts solid as a rock!
Hi Orlando, thank you for the kind words mate, playing with Zappo is always a rewarding experience,it's actually the best way we can communicate with each other as I don't speak any German! haha..again your review is very much appreciated..all the best Dave and Detlef. :)
...and you top the whole production off by managing to get that elusive live sound...not much to say Dave...just total funky goodness (with a wee sprinkle of jazz) that sounds great..appreciate the intricacy of the mix...the funky rhythm guitar...the bass that is always something special in your compositions...the extra tasty chords backing the event..the hammond style organ with a bit of key attack...hell..its all just good...I have been royally entertained this evening....bravo...Ed
Hey Ed thanks man!...everyone that's ever picked up a guitar will gladly get on the funk train, the question is can you ever get off, there doesn't seem to be any station stops! lol...thanks again for your great review mate! cheers Dave and Detlef :)
This is really beautiful music. So many instruments, yet everything blends so well. I was especially thrilled by the trumpet starting at 05:07. Very deep.
Hey LosCoz thanks man!..Detlef(Zappo) has a fantastic feel to his brass playing via his midi keyboard and trumpet vst's,you'd swear he'd been playing in a horn section for years...again thank you very much for the kind words! cheers Dave and Detlef :)
So I played this last night and needed a few hours to absorb what I just listened too. Fantastic work. The arrangement, the instruments the production, the composition itself, the instrument choices all brilliant in there execution. The sustained low piano notes lend a nice ominous effect on the tune. I liked that as well as the space (rotary?) Hammond organ. Reverse guitars reminded me a bit of Phil Manzanera and your Bass was sublime and funky. Fav'd and downloaded (TY)
Steve
Hey Steve thanks man!..I'm not sure exactly what vst's Zappo uses with his midi keyboard, though I'm thinking your spot on with the Hammond rotary....I always really dig his instrumentation especially the horn parts he plays, you'd be stretching to improve on them with a real horn section!...thanks again for your kind words mate..cheers Dave and Detlef. :)
Hey Markus, how are you mate great to see you man!..thanks for dropping by,glad you like the funky number buddy!...see you in the Loop my friend...hope all is well with you and your family!..cheers Dave :)
this is really a great collaboration! The tone of your bass is full of harmonics and space, I really enjoy that a lot. Playing is so fine and it gets even more funky around 4:10 when using more slappy technique. Zappo's multiinstrumental work is impressive as always. Great music!
Thanks Alex!...I've always found funky style fun to play,I guess it was a pretty popular genre back in the day,and people still like it today it seems! lol...I saw Tower of Power in Paris back in the 70's,they were great with a big horn presence in the choruses, funk will never go out of fashion I think (and hope)..all the best Dave and Detlef :)
hey Dave. been a while since I heard something of yours. love the in-your-face quality of this and the energy and the funk genre true thing that Joe was talking about. love the sounds and the level of playing is awesome. always an inspiration and something fresh from you. congrats on your work my friend.
Hey Dan,thanks buddy!...glad you like the tune mate, funky music never seems to go out of style, been awhile since I wore a pair of flairs though! lol..all the best mate, hope all is well stateside!..cheers Dave and Detlef :)
Thanks man,we both grew up immersed in those you mentioned, natural musical osmosis is a wonderful thing and we're very happy that you recognized it for what it is..all the best Dave and Detlef! :)
after years of...the...and the....and now i dont know what to think anymore but...man, you and wordybum did open up a can of worms and i just went to go get a fork...can i have seconds please.... :)
HaHa!..thanks for listening mate....Wordybum can definitely get his vocal motor going, wish I could rap like that,I'd be able to hang it on people at a hundred miles an hour! lol...I think my next foray into HipHop and Rap will be a little more generational biased (in my direcxtion that is) haha..cheers buddy, hope you are doing well! Dave :)
I didn't think it possible but once again you confuse and amaze us all with a huge step off the beaten track. Well done. Very courageous stuff. I actually think I like it too!!!!!
Hey homie yer boi planut here,I dig dat u dig it bra.I done dis so I cud be at one wid de urban bros ...brrrrrr jeez I should of ripped a Mercedes hood ornament off and hung it around my neck for effect!haha...I like HipHop to a certain extent, exactly where that line is drawn depends on what mood I wake up with which invariable tends to be one of negativity towards people that don't wear their apparel as designed..but I will occasionally make an effort to meet them halfway! lol..cheers mate Dave :)
This is quite a complex piece, guys. I really enjoyed all the little nuances provided. Makes you want to listen to it a few times to get it all in. Love the British sounding marching band in the intro and outro. All in all, a very excellent piece. Bravo to you both.
Hey Dave! Have to say the intro was great and captured my attention right away. Loved how all the parts flowed so smoothly, the transitions were smooooth. Nice job to both of you. Zappo and you work well together, you guys are on the same page for sure.
I have to comment specifically on the guitar, there is some very cool psychedelic guitar here around the 5:00 minute mark and after. Felt like a trip back to the 70's when jam rock ruled. The bass is sounding sweet as well.
The last couple minutes were a trip, really brought a smile to my face to see where you guys took this. Fav and dl, thanks for sharing!
Hey Wayne, thanks buddy..Zappo is definitely a great composer and like you I always love to hear his guitar playing,he obviously has a deep influence from the period you mentioned(unsurprisingly seeing as he's in our age group)...cheers mate be on your page soon. Dave :)
You just provided me with one of the strongest reminders I have had in a long time of why I find the real creativity that my mind seeks on LM and like places that offer a musical forum for the real stuff....superb bit of musical art guys...love that fretless Dave...but the whole damn thing is just so good..and I like the passage of time vibe...I find myself paying attention to everything thats going on (and the production makes that an easy task)...bravo.....and I`m smiling cause I realize I can still get that experience most of have had that confirms what remains possible when musicians get together..(aint been on my radio for ever)....Ed
Hey Ed..thanks buddy, like you I hardly ever listen to radio these days, well the commercial side of it anyway.....I guess relics like Zappo and myself (and you! lol)tend to live in the past experience wise and all I've got to say to that is thank God! (or whatever appropriate deity),there is obviously some great contemporary music being made in the world but it's hidden from the mainstream,we were so lucky to grow up listening to proper music! haha...thanks again mate ,be over to your page..like right now!..cheers Dave :)
The way things are, if you don't understand the past or chose
to over look it, then you will never understand yourself or
the future....

This has broken through a membrane from another dimension! Other worldly stuff.
It does not compute in my synaptic comfort zones but takes me somewhere new.
Somewhere strange but very very comfortable and after a while safe.
If you could bottle this stuff I'd be having a large one with crushed ice and a cigar.
This is going in my favourites because I will have to keep visiting it for some time to come I suspect.
I'm rambling.
Fantastic piece of artwork.
Sousa like intro melds into a cool ambient dissonant beginning. 1:25 says hello to us with bass delights and then some deviant pads. Piano at 2:20 is a light touch. I love the light percussive elements as well, well thought out. 2:52 has a Floyd like guitar approach. I love the sound of a fret-less bass. I wish more musicians use them on modern music. I have tried to emulate them using synths and a healthy working of the pitch bend but you can't mistake that unique sound. @4:48 we get some synth (g-tar?) sounds that emulate radio waves and whale song, cool. The arrangements are sublime. our music is giving me a nice feeling of Zen this evening. I can discuss the technical issues all night, but to describe how a certain piece effects you emotionally is the real test. 7:09 is a nice feedback sound which you subtly add but at a lesser gain in the next 30 seconds of the piece. And we End with Sousa...like Sousa took acid and saw the future....anyhow hats off to yah, A jar of Vegemite to you Dave, and a Jar of Marmite (Cenovis, Vitam-R) to Detlef.
Great work
Steve
This is more than splendid! Composing and playing is top notch! Highest level treat for fusion and jazz gourmets, as well as for anyone who appreciates more sophisticated works!
