Hey Burt, I really dig this man ! There's just something about a Mississippi Delta blues slide guitar that gives me chills every time I hear it. It all goes back to the history and roots of this style of music which was born out of the southern regions of the U.S. in the 1920s. Infamous for the extremely harsh living conditions of the poverty stricken black communities of the time period. The raw quality of the cigar box really exudes the wonderful yet agonizing sound that is synonymous with the style. Good stuff bro !!!
Great comment Neo! The cigar box guitar was born as a poor mans guitar. People were so poor and in some cases weren't allowed to own instruments so to make life suck a bit less they began making their own out of whatever they could find. Cigar boxes were abundant and made of great tone woods. I dont recall the entire story but someone involved in recording at the time was waiting for a bus or train and came across a gentleman playing a guitar by sliding his knife blade across the strings. I got the chills still do hearing these primitive instruments. Check out songs inside the box by max shores all about the current renasainance of the instrument. Earliest known picture of a cigar box fiddle was civil war era. I've been mb aking a number of these live recordings, people loving it, and I'm hoping to get others inspired to do the same. It's not about perfection.
Great job on this mix pharmaton. Nice match on the vocals and the way you structured it is tight. The melody has a real nice creepy vibe to it. Thanks for adding it to this years Halloween track thread, it fits perfectly.
WTF ! I remember getting total freaked out about some powerful superhero team ups back when I was reading comic books, like when Ghost Rider hooked up with Wolverine and The Punisher, or when Spawn and Batman got together for an ish, and even Kick-Ass and Hit Girl got in on some action together (not what yer thinkin), but this grouping has got to rank among the heaviest I remember since I've been here on Looperman. I really dig this track and dont know how I missed the first posting. I do agree there's some compression issues though so hopefully you can work that out and re-post soon. What do you think about "Warriors Three" for a band name after the Marvel group consisting of Fandral, Hogun and Volstagg?
I hope I didn't freak you out too much with this collaboration between such extreme musical heavyweights. Look out next week for my collaborative track featuring Steve Vai, Maynard James Keenan and Enya. It's something rather special.
We actually made this one about 3 years ago and were hoping to do enough for a whole album together. Or at least a group Looperman account. But that hasn't happened so I've uploaded this one here for people to check out anyway.
Warriors Three? Not a bad name but I don't love it. We suggested so many names between us but didn't really love any of them so went in the end with The Bastard Files. Because we're a bunch of bastards and we send each other audio files over the internet. A bastard file is actually a type of file ie the metal tool used for filing.
Damn those compression issues! I'll try to fix them but I've already put a huge amount of work into mixing this at various times in the last 3 years. So I can't guarantee much improvement now.
Eggs, this is awesome bro !
I especially like how the vocal track is used to explain the character a bit. Not just a bunch of misc. words tossed in. The music and effects are killer too. I sort of wish the bass had a bit more punch as skwishfish pointed out. But overall its very creative and well produced. Thanks for adding this one to the Halloween thread its a perfect fit.
Cool track Joe ! The music has a nice macabre weirdness to it and your vocals really helps push the creepy element. Good stuff and glad to see you back in the clubhouse.
Thanks a lot for your friendly comment Neo.
Good to know that you could enjoy the listen to the music and my vocal work and did not run away while reading me name :)
I dig this man. Was this done with an analog polymoog synth? I especially like the sound separation and panning effects. Great job on creating something unique and extremely bizarre. I think you very much nailed the cosmic horror sound imagery of H.P. Lovecraft.
Your comment gives me great satisfaction. I thank you for the esteem you show for my work. In fact, I use some low-cost applications installed on my Huawei cell phone as the only sound source. Specifically, I use Heath Sintesizer (synth with sequencer) and Beat Machine (electronic drums) for the rhythm parts. They are extraordinary apps that allow me great compositional freedom and extreme customization of sounds. A cordial greeting
Marco
I get a mental picture of the Louisiana Bayou at night and for whatever unfortunate reason, ending up on foot in the wrong place at the wrong time! And wouldn't ya know it the damn flashlight batteries are Dead ! Dang, why did I have to use that word !!!!!
Hey Neo, thanks for starting the annual Halloween thread, it lit a bit of a fire under my ass to get recording. Thought you were smart buying those discount batteries again huh? I never really got down the delta blues on my 6 stringers, seem to have nailed it taking up slide on these homemade guitars. More to come don't die too soon!!
Leon, I love this man! Awesome composition and fabulous work from both you and Ed. I absolutely love the bridge section there at 3:11. I have always been totally captivated with Ed's guitar playing and your additions here with keys and strings is nothing short of amazing. Two super talented guys on one mix. That's an Epic collab in my book. Thanks for sharing this one bro. It got the instant DL.
Sorry for the late reply Neo....always great pleasure to hear from you. Well that bridge section is something that was certainly missing in the original. Thanks a million for your kind feedback and support !
Hey Hams, this is cool ! I dig the electro-metal aspect and you did some very creative work on this. I wish there was some thumping sub bass in here and maybe a nice shredding guitar lead break tho. But, yeah, I'm digging it bro.
Thanks, Neo. Appreciate you giving it a listen and providing some feedback. Yeah, it is not done for sure. I am working on some sub-bass at the moment. I have never done any before so I am watching and learning on Youtube. I just got Serum so going to try and use that for the Sub. Guitars will also be brought up in the mix. I suck at guitar solos, especially ones on Virtual instruments but I might give it a try anyway.
Thanks again.
Has a lot of cinematic quality. I'm picturing some sort of cataclysmic event, Alien Invasion, Zombie Outbreak, World War 3 etc.. The music sets the right mood and provides the tension throughout. I like that bass line. Nice use of sound effects. This would be a good candidate for the annual Halloween thread.
Earths Cry Heavens Smile.
Man that is an awesome cover bro! Santana is one of my idols and you just did him proud with this rendition mi amigo. Beautiful, soulful, melodic all rolled up in one, which is a hallmark of Santana's playing style. So much to love in here, the articulation, the fluidity, the tone - especial the tone ! You made that PRS cry man. I thoroughly dig it. And gotta give some major props to the other talent on this - Dave, Bud and Bobby. Wow, amazing musicians one and all! Immediate fave and straight to download you go !!!
Just saw this today and had to check it out.
I remember this song had a really cool animated video on Mtv. Its a really great tune by A-Ha and the original vocal is terrific. This vocal you found is pretty darn good though. But your guitar really is the star here Bill. Awesome job man. Love the whammy bar dive bombs and pinch harmonic squeals. Great cover, really dig it bro.
Neal this is way cool bro, I really dig the build up intro. Awesome bit of structuring all the way through, and Man I dig that heavy distorted synth and sub bass combo. It cuts a killer groove. Superb drum track too, some really nice variations in there. Really dope track bro, that's the way to get back in action for sure. Thanks for the DL.
Everyone must check out that album over on Bandcamp !
thank you sir, i fixed a few notes since then and wow, totally different song in a way lol... I'm back and loving it... check out KTA !!! (new song) peace
Yeah, finally got to finish listening to this. Continuing on, I like the glitchy synth there leading into the groove which runs a few bars and then you break out the cello for a nice multi track Eastern thing and were under way. The bass plays a repeating pattern and the drums get things under control by establishing a solid foundation. It sounds like you may even have two drum tracks going here, or your at least doing some fancy panning, the snare is definitely moving from one side to the other or is it stereo effect or delay. Sounds cool. I always appreciate your drum tracks bro. You don't skimp or play it safe when it come to the percussion and it really is a contributing factor to the quality and diversity that is always evident in your music.
I noticed you mentioned "programmed violin" parts and as this progresses the music really thickens and it almost sounds like a complete string orchestra. We are treated to a very fat groove of strings there for several bars as everything starts to speed up, well not really but the intensity certainly increases with the help of some heavy drum runs. After the apex the music ebbs and settles back into the groove that feature more cello with some octave phrasing. The outtro drops into a calmer portion with the reprise of the mystical opening tones to take it out.
I know your tough on yourself, the best artists are rarely satisfied with their material. This is a another work of art from a great artist. It is without a shadow of a doubt pure StaticNomad. You seem to be trying some different things here with the intro and some sounds. That's the way to do it, and keep things from boring you. I'm waiting to hear some more guitar works hopefully. Maybe some neo-sych or some Psy-trance. Or how about some Eastern Sludge or Stoner?
I'm still waiting for that album man !!!

That glitchy synth is a sample-based banjo part put through a stutter effect. Good fun and fairly memorable.
"and then you break out the cello for a nice multi track Eastern thing"
My favourite cello riff in this. Kind of Eastern, with lots of movement. Fun to play.
"The bass plays a repeating pattern"
It does. Kind of the same thing throughout though there is a bit of variation when the track opens out later on and switches to the key of D (from C). I'm pleased with how the sine wave bass arp sits nicely under the strings and synths in the first few mins. Then I fatten it up for the groove based sections and it all seems to work nicely. There is another bass synth that takes over in a couple of different sections but I think the sine wave part may still be playing, lower in the mix.
"you may even have two drum tracks going here"
Yes, layered loops, as I often do. Plus programmed acoustic kits. Not sure about the panning but there is certainly some movement. Might be on the loops.
"You don't skimp or play it safe when it come to the percussion"
I don't but I'd also like to do more minimal drum tracks though I'm also always trying to get a unique overall drum track for each piece of music, as difficult as that is. Lots of albums have the exact same drum sound throughout.
"it almost sounds like a complete string orchestra"
Not sure why as there's mostly just one sample-based violin, though there are some played cello layers at various points, eg in the intro as the track builds in complexity and volume.
"a very fat groove of strings there for several bars as everything starts to speed up"
Aha, in that heavier, darker string section, I have the violin split into two channels, one with distortion on it, just to give more buzzy crunch. And there are higher cello flourishes to add emphasis.
"the reprise of the mystical opening tones to take it out."
Well I had to end it somehow and I find those mystical sine wave tones quite pleasant to listen to on a loop. I could've gone on with that for a while!
"the best artists are rarely satisfied with their material."
Well I'm certainly no great artist but I am a bit different, hopefully unique. And I am indeed rarely satisfied, especially these days as I sometimes feel like an ex-musician, quite disconnected from playing and listening to music.
"I'm waiting to hear some more guitar works hopefully."
Won't be happening anytime soon! Lost all my fluidity, ideas, phrasing, joy and so on on the instrument.
"Maybe some neo-sych or some Psy-trance."
I'd like to make some Tri trance (feat. lead triangle throughout) or Cry trance (sad, weepy, emotional trance for a raver's funeral).
I'd love to make some Eastern Sludge or stoner but guitar playing will be required! Or distorted cello.
I'm at work today and did my usual Looperman scope out during a break and noticed the El StaticusNomadico posted a new track! So I got anxious to check it out! I only have a pair of ear buds here and wouldn't you know it, one side started funking out on me right after the intro, which I love BTW. I actually thought for a second or two you were about to cover Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter", which is one of my abosolute faves by them. But of course I was wrong. However I do thoroughly dig this magnificently composed and extremely cool intro. I'm thinking a 3 minute drumless intro might even be a rarity for you eh bro? Anyhow it is has a very mystical almost spiritual vibe to it and at times it almost sounds as if there are some choral effects being used. It nicely melds into the initial beat of the track which builds from that single note accompanied by a nice tight staccato snare rudiment to usher in the 4/4. There is some really tasteful progression here that you so expertly use to build some intensity, via a nice cacophony of various positioned synth fills and swells that eventually culminate into the main groove. It was right about here that my ear buds started crapped out so I had to stop. I will finish listening later when I get home and return to finish up my comments. I noticed some pretty cool glitch rhythm elements taking place before I hit the stop button. So I'm dying to hear the rest of this man !!!
Damn earbuds! They can be so crap. This track sounds rubbish on the ones I have.
No Quarter? Does this really sound like that. Will have to go back and listen to the original though I like the Tool version.
"a 3 minute drumless intro might even be a rarity for you"
It is but I'm trying to progress, even within my awful, ongoing period of creativity and non instrument playing.
"almost sounds as if there are some choral effects being used."
A choir pad enters playing pretty much the same thing as the lead violin at 1:56.
There's quite a bit happening in my intro, including two versions of that looping sine wave bass, which plays throughout most of the track. 3:06 I just add an effect to make it much fatter. Throbbing sub, basically. No throbbing in intro, just has to sit nicely under the strings and stuff.
"a nice tight staccato snare rudiment"
Yes, that's a drum loop that I've sort of trimmed by adjusting the attack, letting a lot less of the sound through than the original, which is kind of a dance beat.
"some pretty cool glitch rhythm elements"
I think that's just one stutter effect on, would you believe it, a banjo sound! That's at 3:52 and is good fun and has been noted by other people here.
Wow, that's good VG, TV ! Great job on the vocals too. Good raw sound and does kind of have that late sixties early seventies hippy rock vibe to it. Lyrics are a bit OT with the baby stuff, but if Tommy James' baby did the Hanky Panky, why not ! I dig it bro !!
Thanks, Neo. Yeah, the lyrics need refinement for sure. I tend to always go for vocal melody 1st and then try and expand on lyrical content. Quite a few of my tracks that have vocals don't even have actual words, just sounds.
I have been trying to get more involved with Virtual Instruments. I suck at keyboard and MIDI arrangement but have been getting better. Thanks for the feedback.
Nice job on this bro. Everything sounds well balanced and structured. My only suggestion is more variation on the drum track and pumping up that kick. The drum track is the weak link in here.
Nice track Nous ! Vocals are tight man. Love the effect there at 2:00. This is a very professional mix bro. The synths in here are superb. I dig it bro !
Wow I love this collab ! Your vocal really digs in and goes straight for the heart. The words and the feeling here is pretty powerful. When guys hear a girl sing like this they get weak. Major props to Brado too on the music. A beautiful and melodic composition, really creates the perfect backdrop for this. Anyone who has ever lost their heart to someone who may not know it or feel the same way for them will certainly relate. Love can be the most wonderful thing we experience and yet it can likewise be the most painful.
This is quite an eclectic mix Royal. Some very unique and interesting use of instruments against the tribal drums. Superb production all the way round. The Erhu and Gu Zheng sections floored me bro. Very cool. I totally dig it ! BUT...this track is simply no good without the bellydance video !!!!!(ha ha)
Man you can tell those are some heavy gauge strings from that pick drag! My fingers are blistering up just listening to it! (ha ha) Cool track Wayne ! I love me some good Rockabilly. Epiphone hollow bodies are awesome guitars man. My Dad had an early 60's model Silvertone that he bought from Sears. It was a sweet guitar which I believe was actually manufactured by Danelectro. He could play this kind of stuff. You guys nailed it here bro, and props to you on that bass track. I hope you slicked your hair back and rolled up the t-shirt sleeves daddy-o. Makes me want to fire up the Merc and head to Mel's for a malt and flirt with the teeny boppers !!!
Good ears, yes he does use heavy gauge strings. Great old song but maybe not as old as you might think. Even though songs like Rumble were done as early as '56, this one was done quite a bit later in 1979, sure surprised me.
I learned to play acoustic on a Silvertone. Nice sound, bad action = bloody fingertips but honestly, I wish that borrowed guitar was still in my possession. Yup Danelectro made those for Sears.
Bass track i stuck to the original runs, no need to mess with that, used a 55 Gretch drum set in EZ Drummer, killer kick sound!
