Great track...has a floating feel to it but anchored by the bass & beat. Nice use of guitars too. Mixing is superb, great space, good frequency separations, no mud. Also the tack in nicely spaced with interludes. Congrats!
Thanks much for your kind review! I can't take much credit for this one, as ShortBus did all the composing and recording. He's done something special with this song! I really appreciate the positive feedback!
The mix is very clean and well balanced with good dynamic range. The sine melody at the start is nice however you might want to make some of it double time with more scale range just to give it a more classical arpeggio? Again with the violin when the sine melody joins it perhaps make the violin a higher scale.
A good blend genres. Well done
Hi, what I mean by a Live Mixdown is basically what happens in studio's where the levels are manually tweaked during the recording process. This was possible at home using the old 4 or 8 track machines but nowadays with digital software on a single PC you can only rely on managing the volumes pre-rendering and then hope for the best!
Great song and I really love your voice. I actually have a podcast on the Jonestown Massacre that has audio of Jim Jones himself. It would make a great addition to have some of his bullshit sermons in the background!? Let me know if you would like it? But more on this track very clean mix and seamless use of loops. Just felt it needed to be a little more dramatic from 2.23, some bigger backing sounds to lift it up before it ends. Thanks for the comments on my song "Our Last Goodbye". Would love to use your voice on tracks if you're interested.
That's a great idea to use some of his sermons, I'm shooting a music video for this song next month and his vocals are actually going to be incorporated in that. As far as using my vocals? Feel free! I would love to work with you. Just let me know what I need to do :). I always listen to this track and feel its missing something as well but I can get carried away and spend way too much time/money on one song because I'm never satisfied. My friends told me to record a song.. edit it once then step back. I wish I didn't take their advice on this after seeing your comment.
Yes, too many Steve's! I work with 3 just in my work group! I have found with FL studio that if you play around with the beat range as opposed to the estimated BPM you can find a good match sometimes! Take care.
Hi, some really nice elements in this track. Really like the build and chord structure around the vocals. Thought the vocals could have been a little more prominent in the chorus? Although this is hard is you are not performing a "live" mixdown.I like you comment about how we come back to previous tracks and become far more critical! Anyway this was a very entertaining listen.
Hi Steve :) thank you for listening and reviewing my track . i really curious with 'live' mixdown you mentiont can you point out a good reference for it? it will surely enrich my knowledge \^o^/
First off nice chords matching the vocals. The timing of the vocals sounds pretty good and timing is always helped by adding echo. I use FL studio which has a "Fit to Tempo" facility that helps. Vocals could be EQ'd a bit brighter? Sound a bit muffled. I also find the rapid kicks a bit distracting over the vocal and a bit repetitive. Overall though a good feel track!
Cheers Steve
Hi Steve!! (How many Steve's are there in here anyway? =D )
About the muffled vocal, yes, it was kind of tricky to bring it out from under the synth stabs so I'm going to look in to that some more.
I also use FL but that "fit to tempo" feature always backfires on me so I usually timestretch manually and repitch if nescessery.
Noted about the rapid kicks, I like them but I guess you have a point there. I could tone them down a bit and see what happens.
Thanks for listening and for the great feedback!
Take care/ SJ =)
Love the drums on this one throughout and a nice bass line in the middle. In each section they are all great to listen to however they dont seem to have a natural link when they fade into each other other than being like a sample track of different works? All nicely mixed, balanced and clean. Nice use of vocals. Is there a Poizone synth in there? Overall a great listening experience!
Yeah, the idea was to make it like a mini DJ mix so it was just a case of fade one out and bring another in. I did use the poizone synth for the ARP in track 2 so well spotted. I'm new to VST's so i'm still learning what they can do (or struggling to learn i should say)
Thanks for dropping in and commenting on the track.

Some really nice elements in this track. Agree with JJ that a little more variation in the bass line sound and perhaps some breaks in the drumming for contrast but its only 3 minutes long so a longer version could be on the cards?
Real happy go lucky song with an anthem feel. Its screaming out for vocals, nothing too complex but just to lift the cheer. Could have had a bit more dynamic range (loud v quiet) but on the whole very enjoyable.
Hi SM...not confused...maybe mad! but right from the start the sounds are vowels with a B,W or a N...musical creatures! Anyway, its a great listen in anyones language!
Ok - you're making slightly more sense now though I still don't get the bass talking to guitar thing.
Yes, I suppose that intro bass does have some vowel-like talking qualities to it. "Bow-a-wow" is what I hear now you mention it.
It's just a modified Reason patch I made in about 2001 (in making this track) and I still absolutely love it. Its the main feature of a mostly electronic track I made, called Into The Out There, that may well be your favourite track of mine:
I have no idea why but I seem to feature creature-like sounds in a lot of my tracks over the years. I don't mean samples of animals or anything else but just making synths and sometimes guitar appear to make creature-like sounds.
I really don't get how this happens! Sometimes maybe it's a bit cute and cheesy but something I seem to have some entirely unintentional talent for.
Thanks for confirming your possible madness. You're certainly not too mad to regularly produce quality music...
That bass and guitar are talking to each other! Superb Mix. Great percussion as usual...this is bloody clever..in my ears its like a conversation of instruments...ohhh and that distorted guitar just lifts the whole thing...great dynamic range too..a joy to listen to...congrats!
Or maybe you're confused. Without a time reference, I'm not sure which bit you're talking about and there's relatively little guitar in this, apart from the obvious big part on 4:00 though I'm guessing you're not talking about that section just yet.
1:27 there is some subtle autowah guitar which blends well with the bass. Maybe that's the bit you meant.
I think I always try to get instruments to appear to talk to each other and chatter back and forth.
Maybe this is partly because it's all me playing them so I just naturally connect with any part that I've already played - even when I can't remember how to play it (which is most of the time).
4:52 check how the psychedelic guitar merges with the lead synth. Hearing them as separate instruments is hard to do at times. They seem to come together to form one instrument though I have no idea if they're both playing the same thing. Must be quite similar, I guess.
"that distorted guitar just lifts the whole thing"
A couple of commenters had a problem with it and a couple loved it. I think it's unusual and definitely wouldn't get rid of it.
"a joy to listen to"
It may well be my finest ever track and I would expect most people into synths and far out, groove-based music to enjoy it.
Some really nice elements at the start...synths, keyboards and guitar...are the echo's reversed? Having a good pella always sets up for a good song..love the piano...I like the rhythm set up for this...sort of march into her new life!...yes the vocals need remixing to stop the distortion but if this at a development stage its in good shape!
FL Studio VST's? Really nice chords...quite uplifting..Nice bass too...could have reduced the compression or limiter to make the non drum sections just a bit quieter for some dynamic range. Nice all the same
Steve
My God...your guitar playing has just skyrocketed! You are showing so much confidence to be yourself and play what is in your heart....this reminds me of the epic heavy metal songs of the 70's!! What a great journey through a song that demands to mean something. Super effects too...could have used a touch more treble but bloody hell what an EPIC!!!
Fantastic
Steve
First off I love the title...great use of strings behind the superb guitar work...yes...folk / celtic... I could hear Maire Brennan from Clannad singing to this..bloody hell...its just plainly a top track and very professional...great elements...am in awe...contrats..
OMG Jazz!..my ears ..my ears! Seriously though...love the slow low guitar start and the way the slides pan right to left..that piano chord a 1:00 is a real tease....sort of drunk floyd..nice edgy guitar now..4:00 and nice groove going on...we need a new genre for you stuff...love the piano with the edgy guitar at 5:35..I think you could have used some touches of muted trumpet or short section brass..just touches..7:15..cool piano work.8:44 and a wicked lead synth gets us rockin again...very cool...excellent track...congrats!
Well, well - it seems you managed to survive my jazz odyssey.
That main bass was just some slide resonator I had left over from some other track so I tried detuning it an octave and loved the sound. A cool not-very-bassy bass.
I have no idea why there is panning on it! I haven't applied it whilst making this track but it also wouldn't have been recorded on the original signal so I don't really understand it. But it sounds good so I've left it.
"that piano chord a 1:00 is a real tease"
That's really well put and I know what you mean. Not a big piano fan but like to use it sometimes.
The edgy/rock guitar in that first section is all about playing along to the accented hi hat drum groove. Nice, accented 4/4 change from the gentle, swinging jazz to provide variety. Fun guitar to play.
I have no idea what genre you could give to all my stuff except 'far out'. Hopefully my different albums will sort of be seen as different genres (that's for other people to say).
Yes, could have used touches of brass but my VST brass stuff isn't great and I didn't really experiment much with it in this. Maybe not having any brass here is more interesting.
7:15 bigger, more obvious piano riff. Notice how that detuned slide bass is still going underneath (and even in the rocking section later on).
8:44 short acid synth break was one of the last bits of playing I put in. Had that instrument sitting unused on the timeline. Just twiddled a few keys and it was done.
Really like that wasp type resonance sound, great arp that comes in around 1:30 and the trance chord on every second second beat (if that makes sense!). Good trance mood!
Love the guitar work...your talent really showing here...nice vocals and melody...possibly could have been mixed a little more forward in parts but hard to do dynamic mixing without a studio!..a really nice song to start the year..well done!
Regards
Steve
hey Steve , U'll have separated instrumental & vocal line in your email if U check it tonight. would be great if U can have any better mix . yes..U know I have no Studio & no equipmenT ...& honesty no interest to mix & mastering too ..
for sure a better mix can show Brandy's great tallents better.
I really like what she had done with my duet guitar .
would be great if U join us for this .best wishes.__Behnam
Love the bass line and lead guitar work...although I would have liked the lead guitar saved for the chorus and a more muted one in between your verses...agree the sort of honky tonk keys are a bit out of place with the overall "mood"...but most of all your vocals are just so adaptable and strong...no pun intended...great to hear you again!
Yeah, you're surely right 'bout the guitars ( thx for the piece of advice ) and the honky tonk keyboard, Sir (though I like them there) .
I'm grateful to you for your interesting and warm comment,
Merci beaucoup !
