I've listened to your music for a long time Jody, and this one is about as good as it gets. You are a monster dude!!! Tight mix, great composition....cannot believe some great rapper doesn't jump all over this one (maybe EYEDYE did something for you).
Added to favorites for sure. Great example to all the "wannabes" on how to construct a killer hip hop track. Well done Jody. I hope all is well.
Hey Mr. Bear!! I appreciate the kind words bro!!...your 1 of my favs here on Looperman....your a great talent...so it means a lot coming from you. thanks friend
Sometimes simple and using basics can be really effective, and in this case you did a really nice job. For someone who has only been focusing on mixing and mastering for a few months.....you flat nailed it :) Stellar work on this one. All of the instruments can be heard really well in this mix, there is no mud in the mids, and I love the way you emphasized the flute in the final stanza. Great job my friend. This is going to be tough to pick a winner. I hope all is well.
Thank you so much!! I was really nervous uploading this, and then listening to the other entries..I didn't think I stood a chance at first, so thank you very much! It means a lot! and also, thanks for a great starting point! you can't get a great mix without great instrument tracks to start from!
I just had to stop by and grab a copy of this amazing song (thank you so much for the download) and once again tell you that the world is a better place because of your music. My wife sends her best and thanks you for a great track for the two of us to dance to :) I hope all is well.
Hey Joe, I would have to agree with Orlando and say that this is your best effort to date. The approach was different and I think the mix is really nice and crisp. I think the harmonic dissonance that Alex mentions is actually in the stems itself and was intentional. The one electric guitar is playing Da minor progression while the acoustic is playing a Dmajor. It sounds like a wrong note, but was intentional. To eliminate it, you could remove the third note in the Dminor chord, or pitch it up a half step to a major. My suggestion would be to remove the note each time that guitar plays the Dminor. Other than that, this is a stellar job by you. Thanks for the interest and for working so hard on this. I hope all is well.
Hey Mark, tasty little combination of jazz and blues my friend. Guitar work is stellar as usual, and your vocal work is always special....a combination of ministry, gin, and cigarettes - you are one of the greatest blues vocalists around.
Really nicely done Mark. Definitely added to favorites. I hope all is well brother. Here's to a mild winter packed with a ton of music.
Bear,
Long time old friend. I'll bet you are embracing Grandparenthood like a champ.
TY for the kind words my man. Respect.
In February I had an accident with my table saw on my left hand. 3 surgeries and 7 months later (with endless practise) I am actually better now than I was before it happened. It scared the crap outa me. Middle finger has a screw now - titanium…so does that make me a legitimate cyborg?
My man, Jesus got me through it.
Peace out.
Mark.
Ahhh, another really solid job. Beautiful wide mix, with great clarity on the instruments. All of them have room to breathe......bass is good and solid as well. Nice use of dynamics at 3:10 to transition into the final segment, and the work you did with the ending as well.
Not a lot to critique on this one. It is a really good mix. You overcame the majority of the "problems" presented with the stems. Terrific effort. Thanks for entering. I hope all is well.
hey thanks man, it was a good exercise for me and the fact that you like the mixdown has reaffirmed to me that I'm actually getting quite good at mixing.
I did my usual standard mixdown on this. My own stuff is a lot more minimal and less musical electronica so it's easier to mix. This was quite challenging but it's nice to know that my technique kinda works.
Hey Kevin, first let me say thank you for jumping in the competition with both feet. I would have to echo what Orlando and Alex said. Perhaps a bit too much reverb and a focus on the higher end leaves the bottom end a little light for my tastes. Some of the stems in this one had quite a bit of reverb on them (the acoustic guitars), so it is easy to muddy things up with them.
As Orlando stated, it isn't about winning, but about trying something different and seeing what happens. For this to be only your second attempt at mixing and mastering, I would say you did really well. It truly is an artform in itself, and something that all of us struggle with on a daily basis. I think overall you did a good job considering the many challenges this track presented. Well done my friend. I hope all is well.
I don't know much about dubstep, but I do know a well constructed, well mixed and well mastered song when I hear one. Dubstep is not easy to mix and master, due to the usual focus on dominating bass and huge dynamics. You managed to focus on each element, allow them plenty of room to breathe, and then put them all together in a marvelous cohesive way.
You flat nailed this one. All of the hours you spent on it truly paid off with a terrific result. Outstanding effort. I hope all is well.
You are just sooooooo good!!!! Seriously, I cannot for the life of me figure out why your music isn't playing on radios, IPods, IPhones, all over this country. Maybe I should lobby "The Voice" and see if we can't get you on national TV. Your father would be so proud of this one.
This is seriously radio ready. Allen is such a huge talent, but when he jumps in and plays along with your amazing voice....well, it is a bit of auditory magic.
I'm definitely adding this one to my favorites, and I will enjoy again and again here on Looperman.
You, young lady, are incredible. But I think maybe you already knew that. I hope all is well.
I just love you, Bear...You always touch me with what you say! So heartfelt. I pray that you and your lovely wife are both well. It feels so great to reconnect!!
As I told TG in my response to him, I can only say in due season. Believe it or not, I auditioned for The Voice, TWICE. Was turned down both times. That's why I say, in due season. Doors seem be closed around me, but that does not stop me from creating. Music is who I am...who He has designed me to be.
The scripture keeps coming to mind, James 1:4 - But endurance must do its complete work, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing." This is wisdom.
Somehow, I knew when I hit the play button this was going to be something quite special, and as always Pat, you did not disappoint. There are many of us who aspire to do great things with the mixing and mastering side of things, and then there are a few like you and Malu who set the standard for the rest of us to follow.
There is just so much space on this one....it seems like the stereo field is endless. I also like the way you were able to bring the bass forward and still allow the rest of the instruments to breathe.
You truly are a master at sound design. Epic effort my friend. Thank you for working on this and for contributing such a great track. I hope all is well.
Bear, you are too kind! I'm just so pleased that the effort I put into this did not go unnoticed! I've rarely done this kind of detail work on full length audio files, and I guess it was worth it. I also was using a few new effects in my chains that I hadn't really tried before, and this helped me get to know what they were good for. To be in a class anywhere near Mahloo is just so cool to me, as he obviously knows what he's doing, so thank you for that! Even with the subtle mistakes, your stems were some of the best audio I have worked with when mixing someone else's song, so that helped a lot. Working with your song really helped bring me back to the mono compatibility school of thought, and that is helping me with my own work. I am loving the plugins which have a mono version included, because when I drop those on a track, it's instantly summed to mono and not just centered. Thank you so much for the comment, running the competition, and the T-shirt!
First let me say, welcome to Looperman. Second let me say this is really a nice clean crispy mix. Accenting the highs gives a completely different feel to this one from many of the others. Great use of panning all of the instruments and ending up with a really nice stereo field. The transition into the third movement was nicely done.
There are some really great mixes in this competition and this one ranks right up there with the others. Well done and a big thanks for throwing your hat into the ring. I hope all is well.
Well, I think there just may be a new sheriff in town :) Beautiful mix, with a wonderful sound field. Everything is sitting nicely in the mix, exactly where it should be. And you did a great job working with stems that had reverb/delay/compression beforehand. It shows you have some major production skills.
Seriously Joking was able to point out another flaw in the original stems...the guitar that comes in at the 2:25 mark is playing a minor chord when the rest of the instruments are playing a major. That guitar needs to have the 3rd note pitched to mesh with the rest of the instruments or eliminate that note entirely (just another little challenge I tossed in).
As far as the mix and master goes, yours is definitely at the top of the food chaine. Well done. You know your stuff. Thanks for entering and good luck. I hope all is well.
Thanks short bus... yeah about that gtr, didn't know if I was to fix it?? well I just kinda did it quick, I spent 2 1/2 on it. I think I spent more time trying to get it up on the site.. lol.. :) but it was fun... the people on here really seem like great peeps and been listening to some really nice music.. glad I joined..
Outstanding keyboard improvisation Alex. This song is just about as chilled as it gets. Great pacing throughout. Loved the mix on it as well. There is a lot of great things going on in this one. One of the best songs I've heard this week.
Stellar work Alex and a song worthy of being a favorite. Thanks for sharing it with all of us. I hope all is well.
hi Bear, sorry for a slow reply on this one. It's so nice to read your very kind comments - thanks a lot! Really glad you enjoyed my playing and the track - more music soon!
Greetings, Alex
Really nice cinematic effort Dan. Great use of percussion to move the track along from one stage to another. There isn't anything to really critique here....the mix is spot on, the composition is solid, and the execution is outstanding.
You really do have a gift for composing great music. Keep it up man, we need more music like yours in this world. Well done. I hope all is well.
appreciate it very much Bear. all is well. won't let the day job break me and won't give up the dream. I felt I got to a little better place with the percs on this one. your thumbs up on that was a big boost. all the best. Dan
My friend it is always good to have you return to Looperman, but it is even better when you return with a song. I think normal adjectives fall short trying to describe just how good this is. Ed and Michael are in a league of their own, but when you couple their talents with your immense talent and ability...well, you get something very special indeed.
Sometimes when words fail me, it is best to simply acknowledge by standing and applauding and saying BRAVO!!!
I have downloaded this one to enjoy many more times today. FOr now, I fill my coffee cup, hit the play button again, and let you take me somewhere else. Thanks for the beautiful interlude Dan. I hope life settles down for you, and that the fall is peaceful on your little corner of the world.
I don't know anything about the genre, but I do know a well constructed song when I hear one. Because I lack any knowledge of deep house, I cannot give you any tips to improve. However, I do think this one has a chilled vibe that would work well in video or film. It's a great track to plug into the CD player and hit the road with. Really nice job.
Hey Eazy, great percussion on this one.....really does increase the drama a bunch. I would say it would work really well in a film or television show. Definitely has a current vibe to it. It is always great to hear a remix from a talented person like yourself.
Definitely added to my favorites. Maybe next time I'll do a remix competition with another tune. Outstanding effort my friend. I hope all is well.
Hi there!!!!!! , I am so relieved and happy that you enjoyed this piece Mr. (ShortBus) , then reading u say that you favorited the track just sent me over the clouds!! thank you for being so kind my friend, and please stay tuned!! -EazyBeatz :)
Hey Steve, I have to mirror the others....this is thoughtful, well planned and even better executed. Absolutely beautiful and something the listener can get lost in. Fantastic work as usual. I hope all is well.
Hey Modnex, very nice!! I would think this one could be playing in any of the clubs in Las Vegas....it is mainstream enough to appeal to the masses, but also different enough to appeal to those that don't conform.
Nice crisp mix on it too. Radio ready I would say. Well done. I hope all is well.
Thanks Bear! I agree with you, this does have a mainstream sound to it as well as sound different which is always a good thing. I'm happy you enjoyed this, take care!
Hey Joe, really creative work here. I haven't heard the original shanty, but I know you have put a really cool modern tilt to it and it works really well. Like I said, it isn't easy to take a song that is over 80 years old and make it work in today's market.
Outstanding effort. It is a little bit long, but what the heck, it is a shanty. They are supposed to be long :)
Hey Fixxxer, like Simon says, nobody will kick you for this effort. You really did clean things up a bunch. The biggest challenge in this mix was the sheer number of instruments trying to occupy the same space, especially the guitars. I think you did a good job cleaning up the majority of the mud. And I like the way you emphasized the woodwind at the end as well.
Overall, I would say you rose to the challenge and produced a really nice mix and master. Well done my friend. I thank you for participating and your support. I hope all is well.
George, man this is soooooo nice. Crispy, crispy mix, with a fantastic bottom end. Loved the way you panned the intro. I can hear all of the instruments really well, and that's the key to a great mix. I think you cleaned up the timing issues fairly well. The percussion really sounds sharp, and I think the reason for that is your vast experience working with house music.
I really enjoyed your interpretation. I am downloading as we speak, and when all of the entries are in, I am going to make a CD of them and put them in my car's audio system for the ultimate test. You are a true pro my friend. Outstanding effort. Thanks for participating. I hope all is well.
I just wanna say thanks for putting this comp up in the first place.. I had to go out of my way to learn how to do certain things and as a result I'm now far more conscious about mixing in mono/stereo and more comfortable using the plugins I have at my disposal! :D
The pitching of the piano was a really smart move because there were a lot of things occupying the mids. Love the delay on the percussion. You cleaned up all of the timing issues. I think the most impressive thing is the amount of clarity given to each instrument, and then the outstanding use of dynamics to build to the end.
I knew you would set the bar really high for the others, and you did just that. This shows just how good a great producer/arranger can make a song in the studio. You illustrate that even when given stems that are not quite up to standards, a gifted engineer can make them sound really impressive.
I thank you for showing just how good this one could sound. Bravo my friend. It will be fun to see how the competition responds to this terrific effort.
For the most part, I like what you have done here....but I'm not sure the vocal part - especially the sections with the recognizable "Titanic" melody - actually works with the rest of what you have done. Having that melody is OK, but I think it detracts from the great work you have done on the instrumental underneath it. Perhaps you could find a different vocal that wouldn't stand out quite as much.
Or you could leave it as is, because I'm an idiot and don't know what I am talking about, haha. Seriously though, it is a great fusion cinematic piece worthy of a film. Beautifully crafted. Well done. I hope all is well.
Hi and many thanks for your comment.
I do not know music from 'Titanic', haha:) byt think all
vocal lines are really good here and I like this composition exactly the way as it is. Of course it is possible to extend it and add some another sections for example with some instrumental improvisations or just work on it again and see what comes up more:)
Nice day to you,
