much has already been said about this one Orlando...and rightly so...it is indeed exceptional...epic....inspirational....cinematic..thoughtfully composed...expertly arranged...and masterfully played...besides, the production is top notch too....I think that about covers it and thats my honest opinion my friend...Ed
Thank you so much my friend for another supportive comment!
You can imagine how hungry of making music I was after that long blackout and I think now I'm much closer to the former strenghts with this composition. I'm glad you have so much positive to say about it....I always trust your opinion!:)
Also big thanks for the 'fav'...truly appreciated!
Hey Static...just stopping back at your place a minute with a further word of thanks for the helpful info on that mix I had posted...Had a little time to solo & analyse the tracks this afternoon...To my great surprise a majority of the issues were with a string pad track (that would usually be about the last place I would have expected)...I have had a stern chat with myself and am now lashing myself about the head and shoulders with a wet noodle....Will update my Sound Cloud version if I find time to remix....In the mean time I`ll have another listen to this one....thanks again...Ed
Audio pops piss me off no end so I'm happy to point them out and have done so a good few times in Looperman reviews. They're really inexcusable (to me) in my music so I have to get rid of them as they're pure sonic errors.
I'm currently working on a dual female vocal track and have spent the last couple of mornings removing loads of audio pop edits. The embarrassing thing for me is that I made the track four years ago (just doing an update now) and I cannot work out why the hell I didn't remove all of them at the time. I can't believe I couldn't notice them and you know what I'm like for scrutinising details.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that sometimes people can miss these seemingly obvious errors in their own work so no one should fear pointing them out.
Interesting that Orlando pointed out those errors in your track (though without any time references) but he couldn't hear the audio pops that I pointed out in his most recent track. People have said to me before that it might be something to do with Looperman/web playback but I'm not so sure. I can only go on what I hear, especially when I play it back a few times and the pop is in exactly the same place as before.
I see you have some very in-depth commentary on just about everything to do with this one Static...so there is little an old guitar guy could add that would be at all informative..Having played bass for a few years, the bass grooves you have going here are welcome music to my ears...can`t imagine you doing anything boring (even if you never changed key) and have to admire your attention to detail, not only in instrumentation but in the way the arrangement evolves...I do like the power drums and the outro leaves me with an oh yeah feeling...You do it well and I enjoyed being a listener...much respect to you....Ed
I never know quite what people will pick out from my tracks as interesting to them. Either favourite parts or areas for improvement. My stuff is so dense that there's so much that could be chosen though I don't mind hearing multiple times that a particular section was a highlight. Some bits just do stand out as being high points, as much as you try to raise the quality of everything else.
Yes, there are some decent grooves in the lead bass work though the anchoring stuff is all done by synth bass. Lead bass intentionally doesn't have any low end and is functioning much more as guitar in this. Unusual but it's the kind of thing Evisma does a lot, which is why this track is dedicated to him. Doesn't sound at all like his music but it's not supposed to - there's just the lead bass connection.
"have to admire your attention to detail"
That truly is how I make almost all my music as I don't plan this stuff out beforehand. I jam, see what I get and closely scrutinize and edit parts and then get inspired to add more and more.
Quite often, the attention to detail is me just fixing stuff that's not working properly. Then, in doing the fix, I come up with something creative and have to include that and that's one of a good few reasons for my tracks being so long. I just keep stretching out what I've already got. I love to try to get the most out of the parts I've recorded though often have to start a new track so that things don't end up being 20 mins or more.
"the outro leaves me with an oh yeah feeling"
That's a good way to sign off. I'm not entirely happy with the very final ending but it's a nice enough return to the start of it all so I guess it will do.
Really like this one X...I really wouldn`t suggest you do much if anything to it...the minimal approach really works...everything sounds nice and clear...its the kind of easy listening stuff that just leaves you with a smile (I`ve been cluttering the hell out of my mixes lately...so I`m paying attention to what you have hear)...Its good listening over my way...really well done..Fav....Ed
The V strikes again....I gotta send a link on this one to our oldest Son...he`s in film production & has been into horror since he was a wee boy....you`ve got the whole vibe nailed Aaron.....no hope of mercy here...the wasteland is unforgiving...and what lives there unimaginable....and this is the soundtrack from the neighbourhood that resides at its edge....holy shit...you`re good at it....Ed
Ed, How've you been, Mister? I hope everything is well up there.
If your son is into horror, then he'll probably recognize the vocal sample right away! Maybe even the opening sound effect, as well.
I think it's because of my love for horror since I was just a kid, too, that helps me capture that dark vibe.
"....holy shit...you`re good at it...."
Heheh. Thank you, sir. I take that as a great compliment!
Good to hear from you. I'll be heading over to your page to check out any tracks that I've missed while I've been out. I'm pretty far behind on a few different people.
Thanks again, Ed. It's always a pleasure.
Take care.
Aaron.
I never listened to much Techno until I signed in with Looperman..and I have to admit I have been really getting to like some of it...so I`m blaming that on you (and a couple of others) silverman..haha....very cool track that I`m enjoying a whole lot...I sure couldn`t offer any useful advice on the genre & you obviously dont need any...really well done....Ed
One of your very best Alex....has a really cool combination of rock-pop-funk-soul going on that makes it really quite different...interesting..keeps the ears tuned in all the way..thoughtful composing with the changes that still hold to the overall theme.....take a bow my friend...really excellent....fav...Ed
Megapaul is probably one of the greatest and most inspiring discoveries of mine on this site as he produced a great amount of funky guitar loops.
So just trying out myself on the loops I downloaded when joining the site few months ago.
Sadly collab is not working anytime... creative process can't be rationally controlled I guess... I might be totally wrong though - correct me if so!
Thank you again for very kind feedback and making this one a favourite of you! I really appreciate that and am so happy you liked this production! Alex
I see I`m late catching up with this one Alex...(I`m late for a lot of things lately)...really appreciate the expression and subtlety you get into those Rhodes notes (I think that is difficult to do on an electric piano)...awesome flute lines here...very intricate...There is someting magical about letting the instruments create their own rhythm without the assistance of drums/percussion...it seems to help the music just flow more naturally (I haven`t yet accomplished that)..and without the drums you seem to get a lot more of the dynamic range of everything else...very thoughtfully composed (I admire your patience)..and skillfully played....I must fav this one as it is just so unique, and there is something special about the pictures it brings to ones mind...great track.....Ed
Thank you a lot Ed! Firstly I much appreciate your kind words on the production itself: Yes! There is some electic Rhodes in here (from Roland synth) that I used to support the harmonic progression and to fill up the space at some places throughout this track.
I must say that I started only with drums this time ... When I recorded the solo using some nice flute-like lead I realized that this drum loop I was using takes too much place in the mix so finally I decided to remove it completely. That allowed me to add some more of pads and atmospheres and build much subtle/ambient-like composition...
As for the electric Rhodes I do not have any original one of course but I am very familiar with the mechanics of the real acoustic piano and action of church organ (I practiced also harpsichord for some time). The Roland Juno Di has very light action which in my opinion gives the possibility to play easier but from the other hand that's still just an emulation of the classic electric piano (which is basically an electro - acoustic instrument)... Still it sounds quite cool and keeping that original classic sound in mind I can record easier and faster now, not need to struggle with midi latency signal delay and adjusting midi notes anymore!
Maybe I will get the real Rhodes some day as well as I will probably continue progressively my current making-music in the future!
Thank you again for the time and giving me some great feedback! I really appreciate that.
Hey TG...its just the right kind of stuff that I could sit at the back table with a cool one and listen too for a long time...I think you accomplished what you were after....I spent part of this afternoon trying to marry up some world instruments (from gawd knows how many of our tribes on this wee planet) with some 4-4 kick backing & bit of other things...synth bass...my usual freakin guitar etc...damn but its fun...and I`m guessing you had some fun with this one...I enjoyed it my friend...and I appreciate the creativity that goes into to challenging oneself to do something that doesn`t fit in some genre box...(I hate genres for creating anything...I use them to look for music I like I suppose)...keep on...you do it well......Ed
I hate genre box's and everybody tries to put you in one, guess that's
the fate of mankind born free, into it all but spending your life being
placed in box's...Even the day you die, they've got one fitted for you
what a drag...Nothing but some Music to me...
That is a big task you've taken on, the time thing will always work
it's the styles, that make it hard to come together..But can be done..
Good Luck... :)
Thanks again Man for stopping in, glad you enjoyed the track...
great big sub...yes that loop does produce a subtle but addicting melody...this is really well done lowmusik...I wouldn`t chenge a thing unless you sing/rap...then it would be a really great backer....I`m not up on the genre...but this is just good listening...Ed
If you were doing this on St Paddys I hope you guys were properly lubricated....I personally recommend Killkenny Cream Ale for the long haul...Bushmills whiskey (Black Label) if you are in a hurry....ha...sounds like you were having fun...I know squat about the genre...but keep on doing it...got some good stuff happening....
Glad you got around to doing this one Kyle...nice job on the lyrics & delivery...love the acoustic accompaniment & the little electric guitar bit work a treat in support...fantastic bit of musical work...fav....Ed
Dave....what has become of you....haha...I honestly dont feel bad any more for layering in those hip hop beats with many of the mixes I do....I thought it was a secret..but damned if they dont add some nice extra kick stuff etc to most any down tempo effort...This could be the sound track for one of those spy movies...but that extra tasty bass you do could detract folks from the pictures....you d`man...right on (guess thats not a hip hop expression is it).,,,Cheers.....Ed
Hey Ed sorry for the late reply buddy, yeah mate I also like the actual beat side of HipHop and as far as I'm concerned it's all fertile territory rich for exploitation, even as I type the vocal side of this track is nearly finished thanks to Wordybum (who by the way has insane flow and is as sharp as a tack, supreme spit skills in evidence!...hell I'm picking up the lingo (haha)...if you can't beat em join em isn't strictly the case here,I've always liked spoken word material so I guess HipHop qualifies, though shortly I'm going to start messing with different time signatures and we'll see how they like that!..cheers mate..be on your page shortly....Dave :)
I`m a fan of Rode mics...use them a lot...I have often thought it would be fun to take a pair of mics & portable recorder out to some of my favf country/wilderness places and do some recording...so can appreciate what I think you had in mind here....the cars (with the reverb) do add a darker sound that overcomes some of those more natural sounds,...but I guess that is the real world....interesting promenade...good for you...Ed
Basically I bought those microphones to record church organ but they have also a directional capsules so I can record other instruments as well, maybe I will try them for my old upright piano soon...
Still I need more time to get more seriously into the music and the proper recording process. For now my actual 'real life' is still far too demanding and sadly there's quite limited time for music.
Thanks again for the nice words and some interesting input on the equipment used here. As always it is much appreciated.
Looks like our friend urbanshokker knows his stuff Mos...some interesting observations there that I`m making note of myself as I have tried a couple of funk mixes of my own that I sure didn`t impress myself with ( I do love the genre)...must say your effort is a whole lot better than mine turned out...interesting to hear the jazzy flute lead bits and the bass loop is a reminder of some of the old school funk I like.....Ive been looking around for some good sax leads (any advice?) for a mix I have on the burner right now...may have to resort to my limited keyboard skills & see if I can push put something approaching genuine...anyway...this one makes for good listening and I think that is the ultimate test...I wouldn`t be a very good source of advice on the genre my friend but I think you have gotten some of the best already...our friend Joe Funktastic`s comments would be interesting...way to go...keep on...I`ll try & join you in the genre one of these months....Ed
Mate thank you once more for checking out my works, seems to be getting mixed thoughts in reviews, Joe reviewed track and was happy enough and giving credit for the effort I have done, considering my first attempt into the genre, have to admit wasn't looking forward to Joe reviewing, knowing how much he is into the funk genre, so was blown away when he enjoyed the track, guessing it could be better, but not touching it again just yet, way things been here, I have killed more tracks then completed, so if going back to it again, could just completely stuff it up...So best leaving it just for now...Peace n Respect ED...Mos...
I dont think I would add a thing SC...picture-painting music...I must say though that the big orchestral drums that check in around 1:36 do change the entire feeling dramatically, so I`m thinking that was your likely intent....Ed
You know, most of my tracks are pure experimental. I just started to make cinematic scores this year so I have no experience at all. When I start to make a song I have thousand ideas and at the moment I simply let it be what comes in my mind in that moment.
very cool...the very up-front guitar bit caught me a bit by surprise to start with...great job on the production...placement/panning...and putting the band all together in the same place left to right & front to back......as always the drums are notably good, as is the musicianship,...its some easy none shaking goodness Scott...enjoyed the listen big time....fav.....Ed
the part that brings in the synth bass around 1:36 is really effective...I like the lightness of the whole vibe...realy makes for easy listening & leaves a smile on the face...the mix sounds good Rico...I would maybe bring the vocal up just a little in that first section...butI sure dont have any criticism...I would rather hear a mix like this that is nice and clean with all the dynamics still perfectly in place than one that has been squashed with limiting and ends up distorted...You could bump it up a little with some soft-knee compression and just let your limiter barely catch the peaks & still have everything you have going with a bit more volume...but its sounding good as you`ve got it right now....well done...Ed
Sony (Acid Planet) used to have some interesting remix competitions and a lot of activity...Too bad the site hasnt been maintained & is slowly dying (I still have a few tunes posted there)...Good job on the mix lo-opmix....I dont know much about the genre but you do it well...Ed
You have some nice sounds going on ...could use a bit of bass or maybe some sub-bass hits to fill in that low end that R&B really works well for....sounds fine but I found it quite repetitive with the same basic key prog all the way...maybe a couple of change-ups in the progression or tack in a key change market etc would kick it up a bit...keep it going...you got that basics laid out ...its going to be good...Ed
I like this one Oldpecos...has a really nice soulful R&B kind of feel with the electric piano in the first section...interesting combination you have developed...the orchestral background..and the big metal guitar parts.excellent big sub-kick drum..You should consider marking this one as "Featured"...it deserves many more listens...very creative....well done.....Ed
You have great vocal character Mykael...the kind that you either have or dont...comes with a nice subtle natural vibrato..like that rich sounding piano......You are off to a great start with this one...hope to hear your finished version (feel free to hit my contact button when you upload it)..I think you have the main ingredients here...well done...its good now,,,,going to be great soon...Ed
Oh man.....there is something about this that speaks to the heart/mind....the music that has always stuck with me tends be the simple tunes that let the particular feeling/instrument speak its peace.....love the rich guitar tones TG...I think the beat simplicity does fit the vibe well so not sure I`d muck with a whole lot...same with the gtr tones.. (I have a hell of a time finding drums I like)....You have done it again....and even though you consider it a rough draft...I still consider it a fav.....Ed
I was trying to get 3 or 4 different sounds out of it, that made sense
in my head anyway... :)
The trick is to try and stay out of each others way, but somehow
come together... Keeping things simple..
The Drums are my Alesis SR18 and it just that I need to drop a few
things into the program add some dynamics...
Thanks for your solid comment, glad you enjoyed it...
Nice to hear some flute ( I use one often in my attempts to do Celtic style mixes)...very nicely done JAweGuy...it is picture painting type music for the listener...well done...Ed
Thanks a lot for your time & comment, I really appreciate it! I really love flutes like this in music, celtic style etc, I invested in a virtual flute instrument a while back but it really didn't sound to good in the end! ;( I'm very happy to have found a usable product now.
