The chorus from say 1:01 is an absolute banger and radio ready. Fantastic job you did there.
The intro (and the transition after the chorus) may need a bit more work - it throws me off a bit at least. Eg in the intro the beat wasn't entirely clear to me until I heard it the 3rd time; and around 0:40 there's something that doesn't flow perfectly in the vocal.
But all those are little niggles. This is a really strong track; I'm just mentioning these as I think you can lift it from an 8 to a 9.5.
Good luck man!
I thought many times about livestreaming a jam, but I'm not sure where to start and not sure it would be interesting etc etc. In the end I did a live stream on YouTube the other day of a small gig I did and that was super fun. I'll do that a couple more times and then maybe I'll consider that again. Always try to do the things that are the most scary, that way we grow the most, right? :)
Haha, no worries. I would love to take a look on your end if you stream on youtube.
I was originally scared of streaming 'blank canvas' music. But if it inspires new artists I'm all for it.
Although some people didn't appreciate how long I took to do certain things...I informed them "Guys, sometimes you have to listen to a riff 250 times to make sure it's what you want for the song. You're going to listen to your own work a thousand of times before you release it into the wild. That is what the stream is for, that thought process too."
More variation is always more better. But for the purpose you describe, maybe reconsider the bits from roughly 1:00-1:16 and the scream after that. Both I think as a player would be off-putting. The string stabs I wouldn't do for more than 1 bar, and the scream maybe you could do shorter and more in the background (it might be much more effective at say -20 dB).
Mostly you've done an amazing job though and as a game maker I would love to use this. It's also amazing what you've done with free resources.
Great job!
Dude, never worry about how many people comment or like or whatever. That's a rabbit hole you don't want to go down in. You don't make tracks to be liked, right? You create because it's in your head and it needs to come out.
Like you I have tracks I'm proud of that nobody seems to like or listen to. Well, so what? We keep creating and move on to the next one. It's still one our babies and we still love it.
Regarding this track: great job using your own vocal (and not freaking out and overdosing on autotune, thank you for that). The beat is perfect for this, with the haunting female voice.
Great job. Not my thing generally but definitely had fun listening (twice)!
Yeah man, that's how it works. I recognise your struggle with DAWs - they absolutely boggled me when I started making music 5 years ago and I'm still struggling with Ableton and discovering new tricks and concepts regularly.
Same for making music - I had a bit more background than you but the main thing is to make a tiny step every day and 5 or 10 years from now you'll look back at the journey you made :)
Oh, and from experience I can tell you now... Get a teacher :)
Especially the past 1.5 years I've made much bigger strides due to amazing teachers, first for drumming, then singing, then production... And that really made a huge difference.
I'm not a fan of autotune but now that you've gone completely through the sound barrier and turned it into full Robovoice, it actually sort of works :D
I love the little sounds in the background and it's a happy little tune. Good job!
My advice is always the same, see if you can make a track with it yourself! It's cool you made a melody; see if you can find chords that go well with it. It may not be easy but it will help you to grow as a creator, and create stronger melodies. Good luck!
Yes, I have to take care of chords, which I have neglected so far.
On the other hand, I am glad to have brought it to the present state at all. Half a year ago a DAW was a complete mystery to me and I really found absolutely no access to this mystery; absolutely not, not even rudimentary (my musical activity and knowledge had never gone beyond elementary school time) and someone whose knowledge in these things I could have queried was also not there.
It was really infinitely tedious.... In this respect, I am very grateful if people give me hints and tips. I do not take it for granted and appreciate it very much!
I like it, but because of the repeated melody it feels like a long intro that doesn't get resolved. Maybe you can consider to leave out that loop for some parts of the song or have an alternative?
Hey man, very funky! Can you share the secret of the horns, where you got the samples? I need them for one of my tracks :D ("take off your coat")
I do feel there's something slightly weird in the melody you have them play; one note that seems a bit late and sticks out. Otherwise it's very smooth and funky!
Mixing wise: all instruments have a good volume; the balance left/right is generally good but the guitar really sticks out panned to the elft like the rest of the band didn't want him to sit with the rest (maybe he's smelly).
You can probably increase the master volume for Looperman; some streaming sites do this automagically but Looperman doesn't. In general some mastering wouldn't hurt; put a compressor on the master (and on the individual tracks of you haven't) plus saturator/limiter etc (EQ the individual tracks if you hadn't already done that). There's also plugins and even sites online that do it for you.
Good luck, as said it's very funky, and that's how I like it!
Hey BaoBou, drop me a message for those horns some of them are sampled and played with midi. However, I have a collection which I collected years ago they were free to use. the brass band as far as I know, who offered them doesn't exist any more. I tried to consider your advises and uploaded a new version. As I mentioned before I am fairly new to the technical issues of mixing /mastering and was more than happy to play "just" the bass for years. To me this is still a bit like rocket science, turning 50 makes it not easier. Really appreciated your advices, ear and comment. Grateful help! Drop a PM for those horn samples if you like I am more than happy to help you with this matter.
Haha the EP is already I think 15 songs ago and I'm planning to bring out an album in summer :)
It's doing well actually - by my standards. It has some streams on the various platforms and I even sold 4 physical CDs :D
Now let's see if the album can sell 5 ;)
Thanks man!!
That's really good - that angry vocal at around 0:39 leading into the DnB is a great combo.
Consider shortening the intro a bit though, because you almost lost me before I got there. Eg maybe start at 0:30?
Thank you Bao. I tried several arpeggios before deciding to use that one. I felt by the music being some what up tempo my guitar entry would have to be high energy to set the pace for telling the musical story. The same difference as when you're writing lyrics. I appreciate the "Ooooh" out load on this one. LOL. PEACE.T576 OUT.
As always it's off the charts good. Rock solid, or maybe I should say jazz solid (despite the great guitar).
However.
I have a producer friend/teacher who helps me with songs and structures and he almost always tells me to simplify stuff. In your tracks I hear that too; you have so much musicality and so many amazing ideas - any 15 seconds of your track are more interesting than entire tracks (or the entire life work) of some of us.
Eg the first 5 seconds are this awesome drum rhythm plus bass, then at 0:04 you have the sax, then horns, then a Rhodes, then after 2 min you introduce this amazing guitar which you got straight out of the steely Dan studios (who is that amazing guitarist???)
So what I would set you as a challenge is:
- decide what the top 3 ideas are in your track (to me: the drums, the guitar and the horns)
- build a 2-3 minute track out of that to make sure the core is exactly how you want it
- then add some of the other elements.
- then see if it needs to be longer
Oh btw the drop/break at 4:45 needs to be part of the essentials
I should add that I already immensely admire anything you do - it's easily a 11 on a scale of 1-10. I just think that if you make that next step from jams to songs, you can be a major recording artist (if you aren't already). It's just that good.
BB. Thanks a bunch for stopping by and sharing your perspective. Everything about this process is cool personified. Correct you are, the ideas never stop. Partially because on purpose I throw the ideas out then develop some sort of structure as I go. That's how my music brain works, LOL! But also I'm working to fine tune my sound. To keep things fresh and interesting is my main focus. And with that there's much road ahead. For the guitars, I chopped, arranged, flavored loops to fit this one. I pulled loops from about 5 different sources, with the main one being "Deep Blues Guitars". Great pointers you mentioned that I'll take into consideration. Your HIGH compliments are humbling, buddy. We'll catch up on the next round. Be safe.
I can't fully hear it, but it seems to me the bassline might be in a different key than the female vocal?
I like how you combined the vocals though, and the idea of having only a bass and drums and no other instruments is also really cool!
Amazing track. I agree with Eric on the autotune, which is one of my pet peeves, but you know what, this track is so rock solid I don't even mind. Great job!
BTW that is an awesome avatar, I only noticed when you replied. I might actually steal that idea for an album cover, that's how much I like it :D
Regarding "tracks to get played outside Looperman" - hey, I made that journey from "crap track on Looperman" to "decent track on looperman" to "some tracks on youtube" to "some listeners on youtube" to "some people to telling me to bring out an EP"... to doing a small concert of my own songs this weekend.
I mean... I honestly didn't think that was possible even a year ago and now I'm setting new milestones and new goals and while I still think it's all crap and I don't expect anybody to listen... some people do. So NEVER THINK THAT! Even if you're just being realistic, it can also be nice to be ever so slightly ambitious.
So, long story short, yes, people might play it. You might play it. You might DJ somewhere. Now imagine people standing around on the dance floor and you are starting your latest track and you want to blow their tiny minds - and your intro should tell them PREPARE TO BE BLOWN, EARTHLINGS. Wait, that's not what I meant ;)
So yeah, intros need to be interesting. Good luck :)
Hey, BauBou, you are more than welcome to steal the avatar idea! I did that quite a few years ago. The mugshot number is actually my Looperman member number! :) I thought the tag line in my profile was pretty good as well. Probably the most creative thing I've ever done here on LM! :)
Congratulations on doing the concert of your songs this weekend! That's definitely a serious milestone!
