Everytime when I see your tracks they are so well mixed. I am a novice(at the most) when it comes to mixing down a track. Maybe it would be the next step for me to learn more about mixing a track without the overcompressed sound.
Thanks a lot for your criticism. It helps me finding my weak spots to improve them!
Sounds great to me. I love what you did with those pads! It seems you added some extra depth and effects too which is also excellent. Jazzy middle section has very fine progressions, somehow much more complex that I could expect from any usual house tune. Some nice synths as well around 4.40 I like it a lot. Funky section towards the end is brilliant.
Thanks again for inspiring me to make some another attempt in the genre.
I did add a few effects to the pads to deepen them and make them prominent in the back of the mix. The Jazz sections are simple and add in complexity as the mix carries on, but for me this is an exercise in percussion with soft minimalism.

This is a very nice song! I can really appreciate a kind of a natural ambiance and a 'live performance' sound-image of the recording that Rhodesy mentioned. I think you achieved some good recording results - for this kind of music some rusty low sound qualities are much better even, I guess.
Did you use any special reverb or just captured the natural room ambiance? This sounds good and very convincing.
Overall the song is much more a 'narrative' or 'melodic speech' because the actual melody consists of just few notes (without actual 'blue' notes) but it works fine and it probably fits better your type of songwriting. Slow tempo and the low pitched voice make the song sound quite dark (regarding to the vocal tone). Some proper blues melodic patterns incorporated into your singing will probably give more proper 'blues' feel - that would be recognizable straight away as Blues style. You can also add some harmonica parts too. Overall this makes me think you decided to keep vocal line safe and 'minimal' for this project so far and that sounds fine.
Apart of all this it is a nice song and I like your songwriting work!
I just used some very little reverb (insulated room - for vocals). My cellar studio :) has no reverb at all.
You know that i never try to make anything that fits to any genre, i always try to make things that fit perfect to my own feelings of how something should sound. So it was like you mentioned it, there where no reasons for me to "sing" in perfect blues style with blue notes and stuff. And you are also right with your harmonica, i was thinking about make one but i couldn't find the right "feeling" - maybe you should play something on your nice sounding synth and send me the steem :)
When i done this one i saw myself in a little bar/club with a cigarette in my hand and a whisky/beer in front of me. Burt on a cbg and someone playing bass and drums and i was "telling" the people what happend to me some times ago .... but i can enlarge the pic so that you stand there with us and playing a cool harmonica solo while i have a drink and the audience listen to your solo .... that would be cool :)
Like always, i enjoyed your comment and all the friendly words.
it is short and apparently simple. Not very minimalistic/minimal to me, does not matter.
It sounds very much like improvised music to me. Someone is pushing buttons and making sounds/noises.
Not that ocultic or shamanic as expected by any mean but still very good and enjoyable.
I think this will need at least one breakdown section because it is far too hypnotic for a proper tune. Also you may consider fading-in or building-up the track.
Hmmm, fading in as like the whole song or one particular sample. I'm not really good at this music but I love making it lol. Thank you for your suggestion. Lol.
Interesting idea of blending together apparently different things - it really starts as something quite heavy but you seem instantly introducing those 'slow attack lead guitar parts' as the main mixing 'context' so the whole thing becomes much lighter. This makes the overall sound very spacious and somehow less powerful from what I would probably expect from the 'Heavy Metal' label. It doesn't matter basically but your mix really sounds much more 'airy' from let's say the rock track 'WTF' that I just played a moment ago to get the idea of the level of sound of the guitars. It is all airy chillout sauce making your mix sound so colorful.
I liked guitar riffs very much too - the initial one is really fine - too bad you somehow leave that energy from the beginning quickly but nice you pick it up again around 2:41 - still the actual solo playing on the top is quite relaxed.
As for your 'subtle female vocal samples' quiz - I'd say I can hear some female choir sound at 0:41 in the background.
I will listen to the other track you recommended when I will return with new music.
Yes, a nice mixture of chill and heavy here - two opposite moods I like to combine.
I think the first bit of slow attack lead guitar starts about 1:01, with a proper phrase a few seconds later. I like how that guitar sound also plays on top of the heavy riffs and crashing drums in the middle section.
Yes, a very spacious overall sound to the track.
"your mix really sounds much more 'airy'"
Yes because of the gaps between the main guitar/bass riff's notes. They allow me to bring things (eg pads) in between them.
"too bad you somehow leave that energy from the beginning quickly"
Not sure what you mean there. I only change from that initial guitar/bass guitar/synth bass riff (all three are playing pretty much the same pattern) on 1:17. It doesn't feel like I move off it quickly. But I had to have a change so I went into quite a few different heavy riffs starting 1:17. And then return to the initial pattern around 2:41, as you say.
"the actual solo playing on the top is quite relaxed"
Yes - it's heavily distorted guitar but played in quite slow, spacious, melodic blues style.
" I can hear some female choir sound at 0:41"
Yes, I think there's a small amount there, mixed in with the filtered strings and pads. But the first subtle female vocal enters around 0:05. It's not impossible to hear the vocal sounds but I said that people wouldn't notice them because they're very subtle and merge with the strings and pads.
"I will listen to the other track you recommended"
I don't know which one that is.
Thanks for the feedback. I enjoyed making this one and still think I can make a slightly better version.
Interesting combination of some classical strings and some very gentle electronic sounds. It indeed sounds a bit like a meditative calming easy music at parts. I like the moment you introduce vocal, this sounds really sweet. Haven't heard anything from Oceanically for a while and this is something as good as expected. Not much more to say but I am going to download this and will listen again on speakers.
It is a really nice song! A.
Hey, thanks, mate. :)
Yea, she has a really sweet voice. I wanted to use much more vocals before but I think, that would've been "too much" for such a relaxing tune..
Anyway, I'm glad you liked it! :)
Hi again. Over last months by listening to your tracks my perception of an electronic music has definitely changed. It might sound silly but I just have realized this simple fact the moment I played your track a moment ago.
My favorite part of the instrumental is towards the end when the whistle sound appear. I really like the way how you manage to construct the song using very little and apparently unrelated elements. I see cru remark about the 'grande vocal' and am trying to picture how it would sound when performed using 'empty street' or let's say 'vintage guitar' kind of reverb. The synth riffs and little wiggly melodies are very sweet!
Hey friend! Thank you for listening to this track, and for listening to the new version over on soundcloud! I'm really happy to have had some influence on the electronic side of your music listening and creation. It really doesn't get much better than that! I'm quite fond of the section you mentioned with the the rhythm taken mostly by the zoom RT-123 (with the whistle and stuff). This part alone made it almost irresistible to do an "extended dance mix" sort of thing, but I have refrained so far. As far as the vocal effects go... I have never been interested in very heavy use of reverb, on vocals or anything else really. I find that most reverbs can easily shift the perception to a more ambient or cinematic soundscape. The vocal sound I go for usually is more akin to early post punk recordings, in the vein of Joy Division or early Cure. There was a dryness in many of those vocal recordings which I think suits me, and my range is very similar to Ian Curtis... though I'm sure he would have expanded in range had he not died so young. I have rarely composed in an arabic mode before, but I think it lends itself to the intricacies of the synth interplay, as well as the more microtonal vocal parts. I always appreciate your ideas. Hope to be able to contact you soon!
quite straightforward but very well structured and effectively performed tune. To me there are just few guitar riffs or solo fills needed at places, especially around 0:55 to make the song sound more complete. Adding a longer solo section somewhere in the middle would be nice also.
A very good backing track that surely may be developed into a proper tune.
Congrats. A.
I guess you mean a 'Piano One' plugin (and I am familiar with it). It still sounds a bit artificial but comparing to other (mostly synthesized, flat sounding pianos) this one has more of 'body' resonance and kind of a metalic resonance (which is nice). Maybe it produces to much of an ambiance but that's relative of course.
It is always hard to make piano plugins sound realistic - you've made a really good job as piano beginner.
I liked a kind of a happy vibe of this composition too. More R&B territories than HipHop to me but this is a very good one.
Thanks for the kind words man, and I appreciate the advice on Piano One. Im not really in the position to spend skrillabeebs on a proper piano synth but I plan to once I can because I have fallen in love with piano recently. I'll keep trying to tweak piano one and see if i can make it sound more natural!
I liked the dreamy character of the breathing backgrounds. All sounds very classic indeed - bass, claps, keys and things. Very elegant in it's sound-image and very pleasant music to hear. Congratulations. A.
That "breathing background" is the Kawai K1 preset "Visitors" which I edited a bunch. Some of the things you can do with what should be just a really simple sample based synth is amazing. There's nothing else quite like it.
hi
I mostly agree with the comments below. There is simply some vocal practise needed to make the vocal sound better in tune. You're mostly far too 'under' the correct pitch throughout the song.
I know this was partly intentional probably but your special and somehow 'dirty' vocal style does not correspond stylistically with very clean instrumental track that much. The huge reverb only emphasizes the pitch issues. Also I think when rapping you're slightly out of the proper timing too. Overall this one sounds very much like a raw sketch of a song so far.
I am simply trying to say something useful so do not worry about all this to much. Just my opinions.
Congratulations on making some good songwriting work on this one. I like the vision but there is still so much that you can possibly do to get a better final recording (including fixing the mastering issues too)
There is definitely an awareness to the actual 'recording outcome' being present (so to speak) otherwise you wouldn't release this, that's understood.
In other words you seem to approach the same thing again and again but from a slightly different angle this time - I saw the corresponding thread too.
I also like to think about the 'music itself' sometimes (regardless of whether it's mixed to the standards) but this one sounds really good when particulary and exclusively played on the laptop speakers (the only way in which I can play tracks from Looperman at this very moment).
I am always focusing on the high spectrum of the overall sound image and (in here) nothing is lost of an original sound substance. It seems like the speakers of laptop are entirely capable to channel those acoustic frequencies.
There are some interesting sounds in the background the moment when adjusting the microphone as well as an excellent mouse click sounds towards the end too, what can I say. I can't recall to much of an 'electronic' from you but I know you tend to color your recordings with a lot of additions.
For live recordings, you will probably need only a good microphone(s) (also you need to properly place them of course) and a simple wave-editor I believe.
I admire your songwriting skills as well as your current looperman strategy.
"In other words you seem to approach the same thing again and again but from a slightly different angle this time - I saw the corresponding thread too."
I don't quite understand what you mean here :P
"this one sounds really good when particulary and exclusively played on the laptop speakers"
I agree. Just listened to it on my laptop speakers and it actually doesn't sound absolutely terrible haha.
"There are some interesting sounds in the background the moment when adjusting the microphone as well as an excellent mouse click sounds towards the end too"
Yea, my brother was playing video games in the background and it picked up his mouse clicks! I didn't worry about it too much though, it was a raw recording anyways and I wasn't looking for absolute perfection.
"I can't recall to much of an 'electronic' from you but I know you tend to color your recordings with a lot of additions."
Yea, when I say electronic, I mean using software/computers to record and polish off my music. This one, however, is just raw - no editing, no mixing, etc.
"I admire your songwriting skills as well as your current looperman strategy."
Thank you, promenade. I appreciate the lengthy review and your kind words!
Thanks so much for your kind words. I am very glad you liked it and I am sure MR Wolf will be glad to hear this also.
Yes I played the clavinet also with a midi keyboard. It was hard at first, since I really am not a keyboard player and trying to get the correct notes was a bit hard.. LOL.
there is an impression that the lead you introduced at 0:31 has it's start in fact on the first beat of the bar. This creates some strange and a kind of off-beat funky rhythm when played along the kick from 1:00 (I assume that the kick drum is always on the downbeat). Was the placing of the lead intentional? Just wondering if there are some sync issues to consider regarding this lead.
I appreciate the powerful sound you have in here.
Thanks also for reviewing my track and some good words.
alex
Might be because of the fx, i dont edit in separate sound channel i just throw everything together in one sound channel, so it might be sound distorting.
I did master the lead tho, and added alot of reverb, it could also be that.
Im not really sure why, but im grateful, and happy you said it, i will try to find out why it happens.
hello Dave
A beautiful track from you but so very different from your others maybe because of all electronic additions. What can I say more - everything sounds just perfect to me. A perfect amount of electronic ambiences and space within an 'electric'!
Deep hypnotic drumming (especially on the intro part - till 0:55) is reminding me of some music by Steve Roach https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogeY7iDDiYQ There is so much happening in the low frequency drum sound-spectrum of your track and you seem easily entering modern Rap/Trap territories here (also regarding to the drum 'patterns' you're using). Maybe it's because I recently tend to focus on what is happening inside the drum set too much lol or maybe there is some intentional stylistical sound-distortion going on in your mix, not sure. I really like your choise of drum sounds as well as placing of so many little fills throughout (undefined brushes(?) or shaker single thing at 2:40; also the snare lead-in pattern at 4:04).
I can feel almost a direct solar space vibration being projected to me at the very moment of listening. Great composition and guitar playing!
Alex
Hey Alex thanks man!...I did make some mistakes here with the overall volume threshold of the track..Like you I was probably focusing on the deep drums too much and got carried away! lol, it is my new drum software 'Punch' and it's going to take awhile till I'm completely conversant with it, I will also be sampling my synthesizers a lot as well and adding their sounds into punch's sample library so that will be interesting, this drum software is very reliant on midi keyboard control so I will be making hopefully a lot of 'original beats' ! haha...I will wear my hat on backwards?..NO lol...thanks for listening mate!...cheers Dave ?
ok, I listened several times and this might be one of your best works, I think. The samples are definitely great quality ones.
Too much to discuss in details. Slide guitar (0:34) sounds strange at first in different key - you seem to use 2 different sets of acoustic loops for this section. Nice ehthic ambience. There is also some really fine progression around 2:08. I really liked synths at 2:30. 3:12 - a beautiful section, the lead sounds great along the light cathedral atmos. There is some very slight problem with it's audio quality, it seems (it must be played slower or it's a huge reverb that affects the sample, not sure).
4:48 - removing the backgrounds at this point make this entry sound faint in my opinion. It just sounds suddenly different and there is no reason for breaking the narration and waiting till 4:59 to continue with pads/backgrounds. Also there are nice synths and other interesting stuff and that particular section (4:48 - 5:30) seems to be a bit too much overlayered to me. Maybe I would preffer to have something more 'straight' than 'ambient', especially considering that there are so many of good idas for fine 'song' here. Not sure if 'coloring' it with ambient elements was necessary - at least at some places it would be better removing some frequencies of the 'ambients'.
I liked the bright outro (I do not find the atmos dark anymore). Really solid stylistically overkilled track. Very captivating music and I enjoyed it.
"ok, I listened several times and this might be one of your best works, I think."
Thank you for that. It came to me right after making Control Freak. I used the same Xylient loop which sounds so different slowed down. But I just had this idea of telling a story of a person close to me who suffers from Bi-polarism and had a mixed episode which rendered this person almost Catatonic for a week. I wanted to express that notion in a musical form. Thus all the disjointed key sigs, syncopation and dissonant sounds until we reach the deep pad which is Time stretched (the person in question after coming out of the catatonic state thought they were hospitalized for months rather than one week. I thought the pad and a simple melody line conveyed that sense. The glitch like drums coming back in with the pad fading out is the loss of this state and a frantic confused state only to be balanced out in the end.
"I liked the bright outro (I do not find the atmos dark anymore)" thanks, it is meant to convey hope, but a guarded hope.
"Really solid stylistically overkilled track"
I like that description
Thanks for your thoughts and ideas Alex, very much appreciated.
Steve
hello cru. I saw the previous track you posted while ago and think that Xyilent's synth lead function much better in this new composition. Interesting manipulations on this loop at the beginning. There is a problem with lack of variety of many looperman loops - I see only few members uploading sets of loops (with variations). Would be nice to have a slight variation of that beautiful synth melody.
Shame I cant say anything more in details until I'll play this on proper speakers. I can't remember any other Ambient piece from you but this one sounds also very eclectic considering the acoustic additions and some dark ambient atmospheres.
I can hear reminiscences of 'Nerve Net' by Brian Eno (the only electronic album I had a chance to listen to closely last times).
Trap is not my prefference (I wouldn't consider it as a musical genre even). Interesting that you started with dance arps. Thanks for uploading a complete instrumental track.
don't change a thing! This is very ethnic and has the best 'wave' electronic qualities on this site. I will contact you soon to explain in details. I progressed with my electronic sound and I think I can contribute better electronic now. I am still thinking of making a new version of 'Undergroundsound'.
This one is far too repetitive and I love it!
Alex
Hey Alex,
nice to know that you like it in the way it is and you can be sure that i dont wanna change the track itself. I just not happy with the quality of the vocals ....
You know that i am a fan of your style/progress and i will be happy to listen to some new versions of your hand.
If you need any stuff/material just say it and i will see what i can do.
Still, flat and cold soundscape you have here! This is
a beautiful piece with a lot of positive soothing power.
I can really hear some pleasant and healing resonance of string plucked instruments in this.
Hey mate...how ya doin'?..:) I'm really glad you had quite some positive impressions about this one and also thanks for the link...I will check it out!:)
This one sounds to me very much like a backing track as if it might be recorded by Danke as well. Regarding to this I do not see much the difference so far (unless you add your original vocal part sometime). I enjoyed it so far. Nice mixage of tambourine and claps makes those separated percussions almost unrecognizable to me in the context of your track (which is a good thing I guess) blending nicely with the hihats on the drum loop as well with the high acoustic frequencies. Overall it is some very clever combination of loops. Nice.
It wasn't actually a combination of loops; I recorded the song normally and then proceeded to create loops of the different segments so that anyone could recreate it in their DAW or change it as they see fit :)
hello again
Just having few moments for listening to looperman. Not sure if I will be able to say something very original or useful here in terms of detailed feedback.
Basically everything seems to sound very smooth and clean to me in this production. The structure is transparent and the dynamic of the song is really good. Lots of interesting things happening inside the 'mix'. There is simply an impression that this song was something really enjoyable to write and recording for you - (I mean the process itself). I agree that your vocal work gets better. The songwriting is really good!
I will try to write more about my impressions about the entire album when I find more time for correspondence. I listened many times - making me re-think few things about the music and the sound in general.
This week is going to be a hard one too - I'll try to contact you as soon as I can.
Congrats on making such a nice song!
Best to you, A.
Hello my friend! Thank you for taking the time to comment on the song, as I know that the listening is far more important. You are entirely correct about this being an enjoyable experience! One of my favorite things in life is bring a song to completion which has the power of words which are meaningful to me. Sometimes time limits can really encourage this process, and the looming possibility of sentencing was a simple way to encourage myself. You have given me more impressions about my recent works than pretty much anyone, so I have no reason to expect more of you. You have probably heard the album more than most people as well, and that makes me happy. I will be responding to you soon, but I've just written at least 15000 characters this morning, so it may be a day or two. Thank you for listening!

I appreciate the lengthy review and your kind words!

really stylish and enjoyable music. Yes, the bass is simply great as well as vocal. Did you played clavinet too?
Really some true funky production here. I enjoyed listening.
Congrats
Alex
Yes I played the clavinet also with a midi keyboard. It was hard at first, since I really am not a keyboard player and trying to get the correct notes was a bit hard.. LOL.
Thanks again for your comments.

there is an impression that the lead you introduced at 0:31 has it's start in fact on the first beat of the bar.
Thanks also for reviewing my track and some good words.
alex
I did master the lead tho, and added alot of reverb, it could also be that.
Im not really sure why, but im grateful, and happy you said it, i will try to find out why it happens.

Great composition and guitar playing!

ok, I listened several times and this might be one of your best works, I think.
Alex

I am going to dl for more of later enjoyment.
Best to you, Alex

Trap is not my prefference (I wouldn't consider it as a musical genre even). Interesting that you started with dance arps. Thanks for uploading a complete instrumental track.

don't change a thing! This is very ethnic and has the best 'wave' electronic qualities on this site. I will contact you soon to explain in details. I progressed with my electronic sound and I think I can contribute better electronic now. I am still thinking of making a new version of 'Undergroundsound'.
This one is far too repetitive and I love it!
Alex
nice to know that you like it in the way it is and you can be sure that i dont wanna change the track itself. I just not happy with the quality of the vocals ....
You know that i am a fan of your style/progress and i will be happy to listen to some new versions of your hand.
If you need any stuff/material just say it and i will see what i can do.
stay tuned

Still, flat and cold soundscape you have here! This is
a beautiful piece with a lot of positive soothing power.
I can really hear some pleasant and healing resonance of string plucked instruments in this.
I enjoyed floating melodies - reminding me a bit of the sound of a Sunvox virtual synth I used earlier https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzkulKz8qBI
Thanks for taking me to the Zen zone for a moment!
Best to you, Alex

This one sounds to me very much like a backing track as if it might be recorded by Danke as well. Regarding to this I do not see much the difference so far (unless you add your original vocal part sometime). I enjoyed it so far. Nice mixage of tambourine and claps makes those separated percussions almost unrecognizable to me in the context of your track (which is a good thing I guess) blending nicely with the hihats on the drum loop as well with the high acoustic frequencies. Overall it is some very clever combination of loops. Nice.
Congrats.
